  I'm storing some very basic information "data sources" coming into my application. These data sources can be in the form of a document (e.g. PDF, etc.), audio (e.g. MP3, etc.) or video (e.g. AVI, etc.). Say, for example, I am only interested in the filename of the data source. Thus, I have the following table: DataSource Id (PK) Filename For each data source, I also need to store some of its attributes. Example for a PDF would be "numbe of pages." Example for audio would be "bit rate." Example for video would be "duration." Each DataSource will have different requirements for the attributes that need to be stored. So, I have modeled "data source attribute" this way: DataSourceAttribute Id (PK) DataSourceId (FK) Name Value Thus, I would have records like these: DataSource->Id = 1 DataSource->Filename = 'mydoc.pdf' DataSource->Id = 2 DataSource->Filename = 'mysong.mp3' DataSource->Id = 3 DataSource->Filename = 'myvideo.avi' DataSourceAttribute->Id = 1 DataSourceAttribute->DataSourceId = 1 DataSourceAttribute->Name = 'TotalPages' DataSourceAttribute->Value = '10' DataSourceAttribute->Id = 2 DataSourceAttribute->DataSourceId = 2 DataSourceAttribute->Name = 'BitRate' DataSourceAttribute->Value '16' DataSourceAttribute->Id = 3 DataSourceAttribute->DataSourceId = 3 DataSourceAttribute->Name = 'Duration' DataSourceAttribute->Value = '1:32' My problem is that this doesn't seem to scale.   Hey DBAs and overall smart dudes. I have a question for you. We use MySQL VIEWs to format our data as JSON when it's returned (as a BLOB), which is convenient (though not particularly nice on performance, but we already know this). But, I can't seem to get a particular query working right now (each row contains NULL when it should contain a created JSON object with the values of multiple JOINs). Here's the general idea: SELECT CONCAT( "{", "\"some_list\":[", GROUP_CONCAT( DISTINCT t1.id ), "],", "\"other_list\":[", GROUP_CONCAT( DISTINCT t2.id ), "],", "}" ) cool_json FROM table_name tn INNER JOIN ( some_table st ) ON st.some_id = tn.id LEFT JOIN ( another_table at, another_one ao, used_multiple_times t1 ) ON st.id = at.some_id AND at.different_id = ao.different_id AND ao.different_id = t1.id LEFT JOIN ( another_table2 at2, another_one2 ao2, used_multiple_times t2 ) ON st.id = at2.some_id AND at2.different_id = ao2.different_id AND ao2.different_id = t2.id GROUP BY tn.id ORDER BY tn.name Anybody know the problem here? Am I missing something I should be grouping by? It was working when I was only doing 1 LEFT JOIN & GROUP_CONCAT, but now with multiple JOINs / GROUP_CONCATs it's messing it up. When I move the GROUP_CONCATs from the "cool_json" field they work as expected, but I'd like my data formatted as JSON so I can decode it server-side or client-side in one step.

• Firebug error causing code to fail in Sitecore when using IE8 to view the Content Editor

  Hi, I have a Sitecore 6 CMS with a custom data provider to create child items on the fly based on items added to a field in the parent item. This was working okay (about a week ago was the last time I was working on this project), but now I am getting errors in the web client which are originating in the FirebugLite html and JS files. Basically, I click on a content item, the FirebugLite js fails, and then my code in my custom data provider fails to run. I would have thought any FirebugLite scripts would be disabled or ignored when running under IE8 (isn't FirebugLite a Firefox addin?) When I remove the FirebugLite folder from ..\sitecore\shell\Controls\Lib\ my code runs fine and I don't get the clientside errors. I'm not really sure what my question is. I guess it is should FirebugLite affect IE8? What am I missing out on if I remove FirebugLite from the Sitecore directory tree? I'm running WindowsXP SP3, VS2008.   This is kind of a follow on from a previous question I posted but I've not been able to get it to work.. I'm trying to use multiple sets of tabs (jQuery) on one page. • ASP.NET MVC Patterns

  Hello, I am fairly new to MVC, but after playing with it (MVC 3/Razor), I am hooked. I have a few questions: 1) What is the best, or most widely used pattern to develop MVC apps in? Repository, DDD, UOW? 2) I am using the Entity Framework 4, so could some please explain to me or point me to a good source that will explain the Repository Pattern w/EF4? Doesn't EF4 take place as the business layer and the data access layer? Does the Repository Pattern even provide a benefit? 3) Also, one last question, could someone explain the whole relationship between the Controller, the Model and the View? I get the basics, but maybe a little more in depth of the correct way to use it. View Models - Say I have a view that displays customer info, and one that edits it, should I have a view model and an edit model, or can the be passed around? 4) Examples?? • Mapping an instance of IList in NHibernate

  I'm trying to map a parent-child relationship using NHibernate (2.1.2), MySql.Data (6.2.2) and MySQL Server (5.1). I figured out that this must be done using a <bag> in the mapping file. I build a test app which is running without yielding any errors and is doing an insert for each entry but somehow the foreign key inside the children table (ParentId) is always empty (null). Here are the important parts of my code...   I have a dataset from which I need to sample. It is set up with an ID field and a year field. I want every record from the most current year and then I want the most current ID's but sampled from every 3rd year going back. The data is ordered by year. For example ID<-rep(1:3, 5) Year<-rep(c(1,2,3,4,5),each=3) df<-data.frame(ID,Year) ID Year 1 1 1 2 2 1 3 3 1 4 1 2 5 2 2 6 3 2 7 1 3 8 2 3 9 3 3 10 1 4 11 2 4 12 3 4 13 1 5 14 2 5 15 3 5 So from this example, I would want to return ID Year 1 1 1 2 2 1 3 3 1 4 1 4 5 2 4 6 3 4 I'm thinking that some combination of duplicated() and which() should get what I want, but the problem is duplicated() just tells if it has been repeated; it doesn't say which record is being repeated. which(duplicated(df$ID)) [1] 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 This a problem since not every ID exists in every year. Now my question is how do I capture the sorting? I understand this would be an AJAX request but I have no idea how to do it. I have set up a sort_order column in my DB table and I am using PHP as my scripting language. I could do with a code example. EDIT: Ideally I prefer if the sort order is applied upon moving an item, i.e. I do not want to enclose it all in a form.

  I want to add a class to a list item when I hover over it, and then remove it and add it to a different list item if a different list item is hovered over. • Database design - table relationship question

  I am designing schema for a simple quiz application. It has 2 tables - "Question" and "Answer Choices". Question table has 'question ID', 'question text' and 'answer id' columns. "Answer Choices" table has 'question ID', 'answer ID' and 'answer text' columns. With this simple schema it is obvious that a question can have multiple answer choices & hence the need for the answer choices table. However, a question can have only one correct answer and hence the need for the 'answer ID' in the question table. However, this 'answer ID' column in the question table provides a illusion as though there can be multiple questions for a single answer which is not correct. The other alternative to eliminate this illusion is to have another table just for correct answer that will have just 2 columns namely the question ID and the answer ID with a 1-1 relationship between the two tables. However, I think this is redundant. Any recommendation on how best to design this thereby enforcing the rules that a question can have multiple answer choices but only one correct answer? However, if I use the following approach I end up with all values of the table in one column, separated by commas: -- call function using all values in a column SELECT _tmp_myfunction(t.id) FROM transactions as t; I understand that I can get the same result if I use SELECT _tmp_myfunction(402); instead of SELECT * FROM _tmp_myfunction(402); but I don't know how to construct my query in such a way that I can separate out the results.

  Well, I`m confused about rails queries. For example: Affiche belongs_to :place Place has_many :affiches We can do this now: @affiches = Affiche.all( :joins => :place ) or @affiches = Affiche.all( :include => :place ) and we will get a lot of extra SELECTs, if there are many affiches: Place Load (0.2ms) SELECT "places".* FROM "places" WHERE "places"."id" = 3 LIMIT 1 Place Load (0.3ms) SELECT "places".* FROM "places" WHERE "places"."id" = 3 LIMIT 1 Place Load (0.8ms) SELECT "places".* FROM "places" WHERE "places"."id" = 444 LIMIT 1 Place Load (1.0ms) SELECT "places".* FROM "places" WHERE "places"."id" = 222 LIMIT 1 ...and so on... And (sic!) with :joins used every SELECT is doubled! Technically we cloud just write like this: @affiches = Affiche.all( ) and the result is totally the same! (Because we have relations declared). The wayout of keeping all data in one query is removing the relations and writing a big string with "LEFT OUTER JOIN", but still there is a problem of grouping data in multy-dimentional array and a problem of similar column names, such as id. What is done wrong? Or what am I doing wrong? UPDATE: Well, i have that string Place Load (2.5ms) SELECT "places".* FROM "places" WHERE ("places"."id" IN (3,444,222,57,663,32,154,20)) and a list of selects one by one id. Strange, but I get these separate selects when I`m doing this in each scope: <%= link_to a.place.name, **a.place**( :id => a.place.friendly_id ) %> the marked a.place is the spot, that produces these extra queries.
