• Bluetooth not seeing mouse (Fedora)

  I have a Lenovo S10 'netbook' that I've installed Fedora 17 ("LXDE spin") on. So far pretty much everything works great, except, the on-board Bluetooth. lsusb shows the controller present (0a5c:2101 Broadcom Corp. Bluetooth Controller), hcitool dev shows hci0 present, but when I put my mouse ("Lenovo Bluetooth Laser Mouse," which works perfectly paired with a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini, and Lenovo SL500 (with a USB dongle; running Windows 7)) into pairing mode and run hcitool scan (reports "Scanning ..." and, without further information or error message, returns to the shell prompt), blueman-manager, or bluetooth-wizard (from the gnome-bluetooth package) and try to detect the mouse, I get nothing... Frustrating! Thanks anyone who can point me in the right direction!

• Printing from a Linux using an Acer Aspire Netbook

  A friend asked me to check why their Linux Acer Aspire netbook can't print to their HP printer. When I plugged in the USB cable, the a "balloon" popped up on the netbook saying it was installing the printer. But the printing does not work. I was able to get into a Settings area and click on Print Test Page but nothing happened. If it was Ubuntu, I would go into the Log File Viewer, but I couldn't find that on whatever Linux flavor the Acer is running. I couldn't even figure out how to get to a terminal (shell) window. I tried searching the HP and Acer sites but nothing seems to apply to this issue.

Hello everyone One of my system is really old, but I still use it, right now, the HDD is and old IDE drive that is starting to fail (I got to many damaged sectors) and I'm planing to replace it. The motherboard supports Serial ATA 1 and I have a real nice offer on a SATA 2 drive, can I use that drive on a SATA 1 interface (obviously with reduced speed) just like a USB 2.0 device on a 1.0 port? • Advantages of Terminal Server instead of normal client-Server installation?

  What are the advantages of using a (Windows) Terminal Server and thin clients instead of using a normal Server and full clients? So far I've only really used normal servers and clients, but now customers ask about terminal Server, and I'd like to know pro's and con's of using them instead of an "old-fashioned" client-server network. Some things I can guess: easier administration (don't need to install/update office/stuff on 20 computers but only on the server). Easier backup (no need to backup client computers). And I'd guess it would be hard (impossible) to connect and use local (like USB) hardware with Terminal Server? What else are the reasons for or against switching to Terminal Server?

• Driverpack Solution makes a whole bunch of programs

  I am using Driver Pack solution 12.3 to update my drivers. I used it and installed 55 drivers. I noticed that there are now several dozen new entries in add/remove programs under the name Windows Driver Package - Intel hdc, Windows Driver Package - Intel System, and Windows Driver Package - Intel USB with the driverpack solution logo next to them. When I hit uninstall for any of these, it says all devices using this driver will be removed, and I am scared of uninstalling anything I do not know about. I have no system restore points before I updated my driver. Will these extra driver packages slow down my computer or take up extra disk space? Can I uninstall them safely? I am using Windows 8, so refreshing the computer is an option.

• Configuring Server with no monitor

  Sitting in front of me is an HP DL 380 Generation 4 with no monitor. I'd like to install an OS on the thing but for reasons obvious, I can't. I got excited when I found the ILO port on the back but unless you have a subscription it has limited functionality. I was thinking maybe there was some software out there that booted into some kind of remote access server? When I tested it with a monitor (A friends) I set the BIOS to boot from USB so anything I can load onto a stick should boot. Ideas? Hacks?

• What's the quickest way to install Windows 7?

  I am wondering what the quickest/fastest way to install Windows 7 would be? I've read that you can make a bootable USB with unetbootin, or load the ISO contents to a separate partition/hard-drive and boot from there to install. Then I seen a method using imagex to copy the files needed onto a new partition which can be booted from directly, it takes ~7 minutes + ~5 min for the initial boot... I haven't tried it yet but would like to know if anyone knows of anything faster? If you could provide some instructions (step by step) would be great! The imagex method provides a good tutorial for example.

• How harmful is a hard disk spin cycle?

  It is conventional wisdom¹ that each time you spin a hard disk down and back up, you shave some time off its life expectancy. The topic has been discussed before: Is turning off hard disks harmful? What's the effect of standby (spindown) mode on modern hard drives? Common explanations for why spindowns and spinups are harmful are that they induce more stress on the mechanical parts than ordinary running, and that they cause heat variations that are harmful to the device mechanics. Is there any data showing quantitatively how bad a spin cycle is? That is, how much life expectancy does a spin cycle cost? Or, more practically, if I know that I'm not going to need a disk for X seconds, how large should X be to warrant spinning down? ¹ But conventional wisdom has been wrong before; for example, it is commonly held that hard disks should be kept as cool as possible, but the one published study on the topic shows that cooler drives actually fail more. This study is no help here since all the disks surveyed were powered on 24/7.

I heard the loud sounds and whatnot from one of the ads but nothing was harmed and other than having the life scared out of me nothing was immediately affected. Literally nothing has changed. • No digital audio output with Asus Xonar DG

  I've purchased an Asus Xonar DG as replacement for faulty onboard audio in a Medion 8822 as it has an optical output which is all I really need to feed my HTPC. I uninstalled the previous drivers/devices, switched the PC off, inserted the Asus card, powered up, disabled the onboard audio in the BIOS, then installed the driver that came on the CD (same version as on Asus' website as of today) and everything went perfectly - no errors. I set the audio devices up in Windows and in the Asus utility (SPDIF enabled, 6-ch audio) as I would expect to see them work, but the only thing is I have no digital audio from test tones within Windows/the Asus utility, PCM audio or Dolby Digital from DVD. Analogue audio is fine. I've uninstalled things and reinstalled a couple of times now, as well as trying almost all combinations of analogue/digital outputs but can't get it sorted. Does anyone have any tips on how to get this working? This card has just been released so there isn't much out there to go on. Notes: The light on the toslink port is lit. OS is Vista 32-bit SP2 and all up to date, pretty much a fresh install with almost no 3rd party applications installed This page seems to suggest that a digital output device in Windows is not needed with Xonar cards as it was with the previous Realtek so I have it set to Analog. • Text Terminal Hardware (for Linux)

  Is there any way to obtain a hardware text terminal (preferably small in size) with a screen and a keypad to connect to a Linux machine (preferably via usb)? I'd like to be able to log into a command line and do some work there while simultaneously running a graphical environment on the main display. It seems like there should be some kind of lcd screen and qwerty keypad device designed for this purpose. Does this exist, and how do I get one? Edit: I'd be happy with a small networked device as well, as long as I could get a remote terminal into my computer.

But i don't know how i can give static ipto router because i think somehow that LAN on XP is not giving the IP address

  Hello I was hoping some one could help me my drive has 92gbs used space, 95gbs free out of 220 partition 33gbs in the air i cant find, already did cleanup, emptied recycle bin, history and temp files also and I believe sin Ive seen before its possibly space my brother used with a program he uses to hide (possibly encrypted) files dont know the name just seen him do it on usb and pc dont appear visible or hidden and result is what you read above is there any way of finding them to delete them hence my brother is nowhere to b found or could it be something else??? already tried freecommander also.

  Hi, I'm looking for an incremental backup system on OSX that plays nice with USB NTFS-formatted external HDDs. I an currently using NTFS-3G (http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/) to work with the HDD, but since Time Machine doesn't work with NTFS drives, I have just been manually copying files from my HDD to back it up (ugh). I need to use an NTFS drive because I am going back and forth between Windows machines at my school and a mac at home. I have no permissions at my school to install any Windows software, so I am forced to find a OSX solution. Please -- any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

This is for testing of experimental defrag software, so it really needs to be secure and foolproof. I know it will take a long time, there's millions of files on the disk, but safety just cannot be compromised in a situation like this. Freeware solution much preferred. Can be either Windows software (=inducing pitfalls about files changing due to booting Windows) or a stand alone boot (for example linux boot cd + usb key for storing chksum/metadata).

  Has anyone ever got a serial console working in fedora 14 ? Is it as simple as adding to grub: serial --unit=0 --speed=38400 terminal --timeout=10 serial console and add to the kernel lines: console=tty0 console=ttyS0,38400 ??? If so, this isn't working for me. I have agetty installed, and im using minicom, although i've heard you can also use "screen /dev/ttyUSB0" on the client side. The /etc/init/serial.conf file suggests it should be working, but nothing. Currently getting no joy from any of this after 2 days. Does anyone know a method that definitely works on fedora 14 ? (no /etc/event.d/ needed or such) edit: Client side im using a null modem cable and usb-serial adaptor.

  I'm trying to get Xerox Workcentre 3119 printer to work on Linux. It's a multifunction device (printer and scanner). I run the CUPS web interface at: http://localhost:631/ and it recognizes it on USB port and even suggests Gutenprint driver from the list. When I try to print a test page, the printer goes through "warming up" process (i.e. lights blink and sound is heard) but does not print anything. There are no errors in /var/log/cups/error_log and access_log shows as if everything is ok. The printer works fine in Windows XP. Does anyone have any experience with this printer on Linux?

• What decent audio recording interfaces are well supported in Windows 7 64bit?

  I currently have an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum. It permits me to insert a 1/4" jack line from bass guitar and play along with pre-recorded piano music. This worked fine under Windows XP. I am moving to Windows 7 64 bit (dual boot for now), and Creative may not develop fully working drivers for this component. Looking around, I don't see Windows 7 support mentioned at product web sites from E-MU, Roland, M-Audio, etc. Even at Creative, the posting of available drivers for Windows 7 is deceptive, as they do not adequately support recording (latency, distortion). My local music store shrugs and says to stay with Win XP. In some cases, the Vista drivers will work in Win 7. So I need real world feedback on this. I should also mention I'm not impressed with available USB interfaces - they have too low of a signal to noise ratio for my purposes. That leaves PCI, or possibly firewire devices (never tried one yet).

  First of all my PC config: Host:Windows 7(32-bit) Guest: Windows XP SP3 as XP Mode. Integration Features Disabled(I don't think it has any thing to do with networking). Network Connections on Host : 1.Local Area Connection(Realtek...) - unplugged(as no other PC is connected). 2.Nokia 2730 classic USB Modem - I use this connect to the internet. Now,How can I connect the guest to the host as if they were on a LAN. Please give specific steps as I am using Windows XP Mode/Virtual machine for the first time.

• Zoneminder camera permanently idle

  I have an Ubuntu server with zoneminder installed. I only have one camera (cheap Logitech USB model) and it seems to be permanently idle. What do I need to do to get this working?

• HP Pavillion dm3 (Windows 7) BSOD,

  HI I have a HP Pavilion dm3. It came up with a BSOD and then didn't give me an option to start up in safe mode. I dont have any cd drive, nor did it come with a Windows cd anyway. I presume that it has a partition in my laptop for that kinda stuff. I was hoping to boot it using a usb but I don't know how to do it or where to download the stuff from. I have access to network computers, so am able to download from the internet but it's not a Windows7 computer. I am able to download from the computers that I have access to, but unable to run any executable files on them. Can someone please help? Thanks in advance

• Is proprietary vendor software required to use a wireless printer?

  On Windows Vista, other than the driver, one can use a regular printer w/o any extra software, either plugged in via USB or over the network. I don't have to install extra software from the printer vendor to use the basic printer functionality. Is the same true for wireless printers? I need to install the HP 6000 wireless printer, and I hate installing vendor software other than the required drivers. So I'm wondering whether I need to install HP software on every PC that wants to use this printer? I haven't had a chance to read the manual but I'm hoping I don't have to. Can folks that have experience with wireless printers comment on whether vendor software, other than the printer driver, is required to use a wireless printer?

• External hard drive encryption

  I've got a complete backup of my main PC on 1.5 TB external hard drive that I carry around with my laptop so I can have access to all of my files while I'm on the move, however it has just dawned on me that if someone nicks my external hard drive they now have access to everything! Hence I'm looking for a way to encrypt my external hard drive. I'm after something that is: Secure (if I need to carry around a USB dongle to keep the key on so be it) Fast (the performance of the drive should still be reasonable) Cross-platform (I regularly use other peoples computers - Sometimes they are not windows based and might not even have internet access, however I still want to be able to access my files) Cheap (preferably free / open source!)
