• Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome 3 shell doesn't have the Activities menu or launcher

  I installed it from apt-get and it only has Applications and Places instead of the Activities menu, it also doesn't have the dock or launcher. Using the super key does nothing, as neither does mousing to the upper left corner. I have also installed the tweak tool, but it looks like all the settings are not being applied to the UI. Am I missing something. I have never used Gnome 3 before as I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 10.4, which I believe was Gnome 2 for the shell. I have been reading the documentation on the Gnome site and it says there should be an Activity menu and other items that aren't there. Thanks

• Need Help With Fixing GRUB Dualboot Windows7 and Ubuntu

  I have a running Windows 7 and installed Precise along with it just this afternoon. I was doing a manual partition configuration. On the part where I get to set what partition to install the bootloader/MBR I chose the Windows partition. Now every time I choose Windows 7 from GRUB, it just reverts back to the GRUB menu. I've been reading around the web as I type this and found this tool 'Bootinfo' to let you see my configuration. Here's the pastebin: Boot Info Any help would do. Thanks!

• Wireless will not work in fresh ubuntu 12.04 lts installation

  I did a fresh Ubuntu 12.04 install on my Sony Vaio laptop, which worked perfectly with 10.04. Now my wireless won't work. I have read just about every Q&A on the subject and I have tried different solutions, including the official troubleshooting guides. My laptop is equipped with a Intel 5100 wireless device. Ubuntu recognizes the device and it's status is given as connected in nm-tool. I can ping the gateway, my own IP number and localhost. Rfkill shows no soft or hard blocks. Any ideas? I am just a few hours shy of reinstalling good old 10.04! Taake

  I keep lots of notes as I work - code snippets, TODO lists, account details, links, comments. I currently use plain text files for this - very simple and robust but a bit last-century. I would like features similar to HTML - e.g. to embed pictures, formatting, and crucially hyperlinks within my notes. One particular use-case is an implementation of Getting Things Done - more or less, a collection of hierarchical TODO lists, which I'd implement with hyperlinks between tasks. Most WYSIWYG HTML editors seem to be aimed at web designers, creating beautiful pages for professional websites. Is there a simple tool / editor more appropriate for how I want to use it? (or advice from anyone doing the same)

  My site's URL is: www.hackinguniverse.org From some day in Google Webmaster tool a message is showing that says "Some important page is blocked by robots.txt". My robots.txt is: User-agent: Mediapartners-Google Disallow: User-agent: * Disallow: /search Allow: / Sitemap: http://www.hackinguniverse.org/feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated Now for other information - I hosted this website on blogger. I have some other sitemaps too where I had only included "/Search" in Disallow like in this robots.txt file. But those sites are ok. I mean no message is showing on those. So why am I getting that message telling that I have blocked some important page via robot.txt?

• Windows not recognizing its system drive after installing Ubuntu 11.10 alongside with windows 7. What to do?

  After installing Ubuntu 11.10, it boots perfectly. But when I select Windows 7 from the GRUB menu, it restarts after showing the boot logo. I tried to repair the boot loader but the process failed. Then I decide to repair with system recovery disc. There I realize the system is unable to find any existing system. Then I boot into ubuntu and here I can see all the existing drive (with all content). All drives are still NTFS file system (I have 4 drive: 3 are NTFS another 1 is ext4). Tried to repair with gparted partition tool, but came with no luck. Also tried to reinstall windows but installer don't show any available drive. What to do? (something to do with Ubuntu?)

  Internally we work with metric units and use decimal fractions for sub units, e.g. 1cm or 0.35cm or 23mm) We're building a user oriented design tool for laying out reports and was wondering what the most most common approach taken by UI developers who are still working in Imperial measurements (Inches etc.) when it comes to decimalised fractions. Most of my cultural references point to people using 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 or 1/32 inch when measuring fractions. But when faced with decimal equivalent what do people tend to do? For example do people use 0.5, 0.25, 0.125 etc or do you people roll these up to say 0.5, 03, and 0.1 inch? Sorry for the confusing question.

  I downloaded Ubuntu 12.04, then using the tool Startup Disk Creator i made the live usb. I checked that it's bootable Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 62 15635593 7817766 c W95 FAT32 (LBA) Now on my lap top it boots nicely, but on two other machines that don't have any installation of ubuntu(no Grub) it doesn't boot. I changed the booting order so that USB is before HDD. So i think i did everything i know, but no luck. How can i use this USB drive on other devices that don't have any previous ubuntu installation.

• Best way to develop a level from Top down image using 3dmax

  I have to create a game level from a top down view of an area. I used a plane converted to an editable poly to do the job. I used edges to create the top view of roads, walkways and parks so that i can extrude/edit them later. My problem is the curves in the road look blocky I tried appying mesh smooth modifier on the final model but that interfered with material mapping. Again i tried it on the plane without the extrusions and still the modifier does not work(The roads loose their shape). I know one way to solve the problem is to add more vertices on the curve and transform their location to create a more natural curve but i have a lot of curves so before doing it manually i need to know if there is a tool that refines the curves. Also i need to know if there is a better or proper way of doing the task.

• Ubuntu move fullscreen window to other monitor?

  I have been using Cinnamon with Ubuntu for quite some time now and here with full screen applications (games and the like) I could press META to bring up the "start menu/tray" then right-click that application and "move to monitor - monitor 1" - I see no such button when right-clicking applications from tray on Ubuntu with Unity. I'd prefer being able to do it that way since I am more used to it, is there some way to enable it for Unity?   I have a website which is not scoring good in Google's search results. I use Majestic SEO and Open Site Explorer in order to have a view about my link profile. I now see different backlink domains, some of them already removed, that contains sexual content or other non relative content linking to my domain. How much influence does these strange linked domains have on my search result? Even if some of them are already removed for a couple of months. I have already disavow open sexual domains using the tool that Google provides.

• Why can't I change my icon theme in gnome-classic?

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 (updated) and gnome-classic (I missed it :3) I've tried setting my icon theme, GTK theme, and window theme in gnome-tweak-tool, as well as Ubuntu Tweak, gconf-editor, and dconf-editor. Even though it shows my selections are selected, the icons and themes stay the same. Any Help would be greatly appreciated! Update: I've tested things out on gnome-shell and Unity, and I have full control over icons and such in those environments, but still no control in gnome-classic. I would really like to figure this out. Update 2: It seems that after uninstalling Unity that I have full control over everything. Any explanation (since Unity or some part of it seemed to be the cause) would be really nice.

• How can I use Ubuntu to rescue files from an NTFS drive?

  I reinstalled windows on the laptop of my daughter. Before doing this we made a copy of her music, pictures and so on. Unfortunately, the folder we created for the backup was empty (I checked after I reinstalled windows). Today a miracle happened, as suddenly the data were back but when Itried to copy them to another place thez disappeared again. Checking the drive with disk utility I got the message "filesystem is not clean". Is there a way to recover the data? Preferred solution would be a tool with a gui. The drive I need to repair is formatted in NTFS and is connected via usb to laptop.

  Slowly but surely apps have been coming out for Windows Phone 7, I must admit that was my biggest concern on moving from the iPhone to the Windows Phone.  Not the fact apps would come slowly, but when they would come.  The iPhone side of things had very nice apps, and moving into a not so populated app landscape was an interesting thought.   On mac I would use Elastics (http://tundrabot.com/elastics) To kind of, monitor my EC2 instances. Most important to me was that it worked across several accounts and that it allowed me to connect to a running instance via ssh or RDP. This was the only real feature I care about. I can not always keep the IP address of the server that is running because ec2 is elastic, and it changes frequently. Is there any tool, like Elastics for linux/unity? Again it should support several accounts and be able to give me the IP addresses of the instance I select.

• How to Automate Checking for Stolen Content?

  So I know about tools like Copyscape and Google Alerts.. great tools, but it's quite tedious for me to copy and paste an URL or phrase for every one of my pages in my sites. Is there any tool out there that monitors your website and emails you or alerts you whenever someone has stolen content from your site? The only service I know is CopySentry and honestly, it's too expensive for me since I got thousands of pages I want to monitor... Anyone else have this problem? or is it just me?
