• How does an interpreter switch scope?

  I'm asking this because I'm relatively new to interpreter development and I wanted to know some basic concepts before reinventing the wheel. I thought of the values of all variables stored in an array which makes the current scope, upon entering a function the array is swapped and the original array put on some sort of stack. When leaving the function the top element of the "scope stack" is popped of and used again. Is this basically right? Isn't swapping arrays (which means moving around a lot of data) not very slow and therefore not used by modern interpreters?

  So I thought this should be easy, but, I'm n00bing out here and failing epicly (as they say on teh interwebz). So here's my code: function xy() { $array['var1'] = x; $array['var2'] = y; echo $this->_z; } function _z($array) { $xy = $x.$y; return $xy; } So, why doesn't that seemingly simple code work? I know with views you can pass arrays and the variables are accessible in the views with just their array title, but, why doesn't it work in this case? Jack

• C++ class initialisation containing class variable initialization

  I noticed some code of a colleague today that initialized class variables in the initialization. However it was causing a warning, he says because of the order they are in. My question is why is it better to do variable initialization where it currently is and not within the curly brackets? • deny direct access to a php file by typing the link in the url

  hi, I am using php session for a basic login without encryption for my site. I want to prevent a user from directly accessing a php page by typing the url when he/she is not signed in. But this is not happening. I am using session_start(), initializing session variables and aslo unsetting and destroying sesssion during logout. Also if I type the link in a different browser the page is getting displayed. I am not very well versed with php , only a beginner. I googled for such problem and found few alternatives as keeping all files in a seperate folder from the web root, using .htaccess etc. Can someone explain in simple terms what could be a good solution.thanks in advance.

  I have an app that I want to interact with a web page. Basically I want to press a button and the web page will open in a new view... Sorry I wasn't clear, I am developing on a Mac for an iPhone. Currently I have a "locate me" app that displays your Latitude and Longitude. I want to use those variables to populate 2 of the blanks on a PHP web page/form I have developed. I have added a label and button to my current app, when the button is pressed the URL with the Lat and Long (as passed vars) are displayed in the label. I want those vars to appear on my web page. Hope this is clearer... • how to start stop tomcat server using CMD?

  i set the path for the tomcat and set all variables like 1.JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.6.0_22 2.CATALINA_HOME=G:\springwork\server\apache-tomcat-6.0.29 3.CLASSPATH=G:\springwork\server\apache-tomcat-6.0.29\lib\servlet-api.jar;G:\springwork\server\apache-tomcat-6.0.29\lib\jsp-api.jar;.; when i go to bin folder and double click on startup.bat then my tomcat start and when i double click on shutdown.bat tomcat is stop. But I want using CMD start and stop the tomcat. And in any folder i write command startup.bat the server will start and when i write the server will stop...... Thanks in advace..........

  I'm using the module pattern, one of the things I want to do is dynamically include an external JavaScript file, execute the file, and then use the functions/variables in the file in the return { } of my module. I can't figure out how to do this easily. • Cuda program results are always zero in HW, correct in EMU??

  Hi all! I am having a weird problem .. I have written a CUDA code which executes correctly in emulation and all results show up.. however, when executed on hardware "G210" .. the results in the result memory are always 0 I am passing two vectors to the kernel, one with random variables the other is initialized to zero, the code copies the first vector to shared memory, does some swapping and other operations and then writes back the results on the second vector (the one with the initial 0's) I am using double precision, the -arch sm13 flag is used, all memory allocation also use sizeof(double) .. I have checked if the kernel is invoked, it does .. so no problems here .. the cudaMemCpy has no problems .. what could be the problem .. :( why would it work in emulation but not on HW I am quite confused .. any ideas?

• Sound plays multiple times at once

  I'm having trouble with sound in Flash. I may have went about coding the wrong way, because most of my codes are on frames. So, I have these two variables var outsideDay:Sound = new daysong(); var outsideNight:Sound = new nightsong(); And I want to play these songs on a specific frame. However, the sounds play sporadically, like 50 times at once. I think it's because I have other codes that link to the frames with a Enter_Frame function. How can I get the sounds to loop and not play multiple times at once?

• [PHP] - Lowering script memory usage in a "big" file creation

  Hi there people, it looks like I'm facing a typical memory outage problem when using a PHP script. The script, originally developed by another person, serves as an XML sitemap creator, and on large websites uses quite a lot of memory. I thought that the problem was related due to an algorithm holding data in memory until the job was done, but digging into the code I have discovered that the script works in this way: open file in output (will contain XML sitemap entries) in the loop: ---- for each entry to be added in sitemap, do fwrite close file end Although there are no huge arrays or variables being kept in memory, this technique uses a lot of memory. I thought that maybe PHP was buffering under the hood the fwrites and "flushing" data at the end of the script, so I have modified the code to close and open the file every Nth record, but the memory usage is still the same.... I'm debugging the script on my computer and watching memory usage: while script execution runs, memory allocation grows. Is there a particular technique to instruct PHP to free unsed memory, to force flushing buffers if any? Thanks

• Run batch file when argument contains quotes and spaces (from .NET framework)

  I have a bat file which sets some environment variables, and then executes a command on the command line. I want to replace the hard coded command with one passed in via a parameter. So: :: Set up the required environment SET some_var=a SET another_var=b CALL some.bat :: Now call the command passed into this batch file %1 The problem is that the command is complex, and doesn't escape cleanly. It looks like this: an.exe -p="path with spaces" -t="some text" -f="another path with spaces" I'm trying to call the .bat from a .NET framework app, using: Dim cmd as String = "the cmd" System.Diagnostics.Process.Start( thebat.exe, cmd ) but I can't seem to get the escapes to work correctly. Can someone tell me how the string cmd should be entetered to get the command passed into the bat file as an argument correctly?

• Pass Alot of Parameters on a Form to Action Struts2

  I have been working on migrating a web application from Struts1 to Struts2. I have a simple Form with around 45 Fields (basically a grid with data). I have to capture all those in Struts2 Action.I noticed that in struts2 we have OGNL through which we just write getters setters in action itself by declaring fields locally to get those variables flowing in the request. I cannot write 45 getters/setters in my action, there must be a way to pass whole object(a POJO) from jsp to Action layer. In Struts 1, we normally get a ActionForm Object and/or get request parameters in a map and then populate. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Any ideas?

  Hey everyone, My database contains information extracted from an external feed. In this raw text feed, the following text is used in place of special characters: & - &amp; ' - &39; é - &eacute; I extract some of this text to form URLs. For example, a URL that I construct from data containing these characters might look like this: http://url.com/search/?brand=Franklin&Hédgson's I use the GET variables in this URL to construct further lookups, which leads to a couple of specific problems: The é and ' characters are sent back to MySQL as they appear, and so they don't trigger any results (because the characters take the full HTML form in the database text). The & within the URL separates the variable, and the GET returns only Franklin, when it should return the whole string. Are there any straightforward ways of dealing with this? Thanks.

  I have built a basic data entry application allowing users to browse external content in iframe and enter data quickly from the same page. One of the data variables is the URL. Ideally I would like to be able to load the iframes current url into a textbox with javascript. I realize now that this is not going to happen due to security issues. Has anyone done anything on the server side? or know of any .Net browser in browser controls. • Displaying Fields (and/instead of Properties) in a PropertyGrid

  I'd like to use a PropertyGrid to manipulate the data on some objects, however these objects don't have properties, they have fields. Thus a property grid doesn't display them (high five MS!) Before anyone posts "just use properties": I can't at the moment.. these objects are DTOs and are used to send data to a VB6 Interop dll, thus all the parameters for the method calls are "ref" parameters (high five MS!), and C# won't compile if you use a property instead of a field or variable (high five MS!). No, I am not going to create local variables for every property on any given object. There many, many fields, and many, many test cases that would need updating, as well as the production code it self, and this post/question may be the path of least resistance. :)

  Is there a reliable mechanism discussed in rails documentation for calling a function at the end of the request, regardless of filter chain aborts? It's not after filters, because after filters don't get called if any prior filter redirected or rendered. For context, I'm trying to put some structured profiling/reporting information into the app log at the end of every request. This information is collected throughought the request lifetime via instance variables wrapped in custom controller accessors, and dumped at the end in a JSON blob for use by a post-processing script. My end goal is to generate reports about my application's logical query distribution (things that depend on controller logic, not just request URIs and parameters), performance profile (time spent in specific DB queries or blocked on webservices), failure rates (including invalid incoming requests that get rejected by before_filter validation rules), and a slew of other things that cannot really be parsed from the basic information in the application and apache logs. At a higher level, is there a different "rails way" that solves my app profiling goal?

• Komodo IDE 6's slow autocomplete problems with Javascript

  I've been trying out Komodo IDE 6 for the last few days. I've always liked Komodo but I'm starting to get annoyed by something: The autocomplete is way too slow/buggy. Certain variables just won't give any autocomplete tips. Sometimes you have to backspace the dot and try over and over again. It also has a hard time giving autocomplete info for an object that has been created using a class in a namespace. Has anyone else had any problems with these things? Are there any better alternatives?

  Hi, I am new to glassfish server. i have a question on glassfish usage: can I just use glassfish like a tomcat server without needing an installation? where in, I just take a folder containing glassfish folders, jars etc... dump it in a folder location setup a few environment variables and it runs.. just like tomcat? is it possible with glassfish? also does glassfish installation does any other background things like creating registry entries etc other than creating the glassfish folder structure?   I'm working on a sports website and need to convert the server's match start time to local match start time. After much googling, I figured the fastest and most accurate way is to get the GMT offset value in JavaScript. The trouble is, I can't pass the GMT offset value to PHP. I've tried using both the PHP session and cookie variables, but both are always empty. The website doesn't require a user account, so there isn't any stored GMT value in the database. I'm trying to auto-detect each user's local timezone every time he/she visits the website, and then calculate the local match start time based on the timezone offset. Can someone please advise me? • Alternative to nesting for loops in Python

  I've read that one of the key beliefs of Python is that flat nested. However, if I have several variables counting up, what is the alternative to multiple for loops? My code is for counting grid sums and goes as follows: def horizontal(): for x in range(20): for y in range(17): temp = grid[x][y: y + 4] sum = 1 for n in temp: sum += int(n) return sum This seems to me like it is too heavily nested. Firstly, what is considered to many nested loops in Python ( I have certainly seen 2 nested loops before). Secondly, if this is too heavily nested, what is an alternative way to write this code?

• Error Instantiating an Inner Class in Parent's Constructor...

  In my application's main class (subclass of Application), I have a public inner class that simply contains 3 public string objects. In the parent class I declare an object of that inner class. public class MainApplication extends Application { public class Data { public String x; public String y; public String z; } private Data data; MainApplication() { data = new Data() data.x = "String"; } } After I instantiate the object in the constructor, I get a runtime error when I try to assign any of the inner class object's variables. Any idea what's up here??
