• Can EPD Python and MacPorts Python coexist on OS X (matplotlib)?

  I've been using MacPorts Python 2.6 on OS X 10.6. I am considering also installing the Enthought Python Distribution (EPD) on the same machine because it comes preconfigured with matplotlib and other nice data analysis and visualization packages. Can the two Python distributions co-exist peacefully on the same machine? What potential problems will I have to look out for (e.g., environment variables)? I know that building matplotlib through MacPorts is an option, but the process is lengthy (on the order of a full day) and there are open questions about compiling some dependencies on 64bit Intel. I would like to know about the tradeoffs before committing to one of the two approaches.

  sqlInsertFrame.Parameters.AddWithValue("@UserName", txtUserName.txt); Given the code above...if I don't have any need to move the textbox data into a string variable, is it best to read the data directly from the control? In terms of performance, it would seem smartest to not create any unnecessary variables which use up memory if its not needed. Or is this a situation where its technically true but doesn't yield any real world results due to the size of the data in question. Forgive me, I know this is a very basic question.

• Is a function kind of like a static method?

  I'm a java programmer and am trying to understand the difference between a method (java methods) and a function (such as in c++). I used to think that they are the same, just different naming conventions for different programming languages. But now that I know they are not, I am having trouble understanding the difference. I know that a method relates to an instance of a class and has access to class data (member variables), while a function does not (?). So is a function kind of like a static method? See here for explanations I read which led me to think this.

• How to interrupt a waiting C++0x thread?

  I'm considering to use C++0x threads in my application instead of Boost threads. However, I'm not sure how to reimplement what I have with standard C++0x threads since they don't seem to have an interrupt() method. My current setup is: a master thread that manages work; several worker threads that carry out master's commands. Workers call wait() on at least two different condition variables. Master has a "timed out" state: in this case it tells all workers to stop and give whatever result they got by then. With Boost threads master just uses interrupt_all() on a thread group, which causes workers to stop waiting. In case they are not waiting at the moment, master also sets a bool flag which workers check periodically. However, in C++0x std::thread I don't see any replacement for interrupt(). Do I miss something? If not, how can I implement the above scheme so that workers cannot just sleep forever?

(GCC, ARM NEON, iPhone) typedef struct{ float v[4]; } Vector; typedef struct{ Vector v[4]; } Matrix; I passed struct data as pointer to avoid performance degrade from data copying when calling function. So I thought designed function like this: void makeTranslation(const Vector* factor, Matrix* restrict result); But, if function is inline, is there any reason to pass values as pointer for performance? Do those variables copied too? How about register and caches? inline Matrix makeTranslation(Vector factor) __attribute__ ((always_inline)); How do you think about calling costs of each cases?

• [SOLVED]Port C's fread(&struct,....) to Python

  Hey, I'm really struggling with this one. I'am trying to port a small piece of someone else's code to Python and this is what I have: typedef struct { uint8_t Y[LUMA_HEIGHT][LUMA_WIDTH]; uint8_t Cb[CHROMA_HEIGHT][CHROMA_WIDTH]; uint8_t Cr[CHROMA_HEIGHT][CHROMA_WIDTH]; } __attribute__((__packed__)) frame_t; frame_t frame; while (! feof(stdin)) { fread(&frame, 1, sizeof(frame), stdin); // DO SOME STUFF } Later I need to access the data like so: frame.Y[x][y] So I made a Class 'frame' in Python and inserted the corresponding variables(frame.Y, frame.Cb, frame.Cr). I have tried to sequentially map the data from Y[0][0] to Cr[MAX][MAX], even printed out the C struct in action but didn't manage to wrap my head around the method used to put the data in there. I've been struggling overnight with this and have to get back to the army tonight, so any immediate help is very welcome and appreciated. Thanks

• The best way to deploy one site for two companies in ColdFusion?

  My client has multiple companies; different names/logos etc, but all the content on the sites are identical with the exception of said names/logos. In a ColdFusion environment, what would be the best way for me to serve up identical content and swap out the logos/company names on the fly so I can keep everything in one spot? Is this a jQuery solution? regex? Or will ColdFusion enable me to deploy this in an efficient manner based on the url and session variables?

  Hello! I want to know how an array of strings is declared? What I do is I declare an array of pointers of pointers to strings. Eg. char *array[]= {"string1","string2","string3"}; I was reading about modifying environment variables in Linux and stumbled upon the pointer char **environ ( http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/resources/courses/2005/17423/doc/libc/Environment-Access.html#Environment-Access ). char **environ is declared as an array of strings. I think it should be a pointer to a pointer. For eg. char *array[]= {"string1","string2","string3"}; environ = array; Am I doing something wrong? I also read somewhere that char *argv[] = char **argv. How is it possible?

  Assume the following C variable decleration int *A[10] , B[10][10]; Of the following expressions A[2] A[2][3] B[1] B[2][3] which will not give compile time errors if used as left hand sides of assignment statements in a C program. A) 1,2 and 4 only B) 2,3, and 4 only C) 2 and 4 only D) 4 only I have tried this on a gcc compiler.I assigned the value '0' to all the above variables.Only the third one showed an error.I can't really understand the reason.Can someone please expalin why that is.?   Is there a way to use anonymous code blocks in Groovy? For example, I'm trying to translate the following Java code into Groovy: { int i = 0; System.out.println(i); } int i = 10; System.out.println(i); The closest translation I can come up with is the following: boolean groovyIsLame = true; if (groovyIsLame) { int i = 0; System.out.println(i); } int i = 10; System.out.println(i); I know anonymous code blocks are often kind of an antipattern. But having variables with names like "inputStream0" and "inputStream1" is an antipattern too, so for this code I'm working on, anonymous code blocks would be helpful.

• zChaff not showing output

  Hello, So I downloaded the latest version of zChaff (2007), and was trying out some very simple SAT problems. But zChaff does not output the solution (variable assignments). A very simple example input: p cnf 2 2 1 2 0 1 -2 0 And what I get: c 2 Clauses are true, Verify Solution successful. Instance Satisfiable 1 -2 Random Seed Used 0 Max Decision Level 1 Num. of Decisions 2 ( Stack + Vsids + Shrinking Decisions ) 0 + 1 + 0 Original Num Variables 2 Original Num Clauses 2 Original Num Literals 4 Added Conflict Clauses 0 Num of Shrinkings 0 Deleted Conflict Clauses 0 Deleted Clauses 0 Added Conflict Literals 0 Deleted (Total) Literals 0 Number of Implication 2 Total Run Time 5.1e-05 RESULT: SAT I can see the 1 -2 on the left of "Random Seed Used", but shouldn't this be outputing the variable assignments as "v ..." ?   I am trying to create a Single Table Inheritance. However, the Controller must be able to know which class to find or create. These are based on another class. For example, ContactEvent with type = Letter needs to grab attributes from a corresponding Model called Letter. Here's what I've tried to do and hit a snag, labelled below. • Panel data with binary dependent variable in R

  Is it possible to do regressions in R using a panel data set with a binary dependent variable? I am familiar with using glm for logit and probit and plm for panel data, but am not sure how to combine the two. Are there any existing code examples? Thank you. EDIT It would also be helpful if I could figure out how to extract the matrix that plm() is using when it does a regression. For instance, you could use plm to do fixed effects, or you could create a matrix with the appropriate dummy variables and then run that through glm(). In a case like this, however, it is annoying to generate the dummies yourself and it would be easier to have plm do it for you. Abiel

• Modular HTML in Adobe AIR? Is It Possible?

  When I write HTML with a PHP backend, I usually have a single header file and a single footer file with some PHP variables in them. The base skeleton for every page calls the header, contains the body content, and then calls the footer. That way, if I want to make changes to the header sitewide, I change one file. I'm working on developing the UI in my first Adobe AIR app and I'm wondering if there's some way to include such files in an HTML based page template there. Obviously, with the file read/write abilities in AIR, I can write a Javascript routine to pull data from a header file, parse it, and inject it into a placeholder. It just seems like such a kludge. I'm thinking there's gotta be some simple way to import a block of HTML into a page without an iFrame or complex post-processor. Something like a PHP include statement or perhaps the old Server Side Includes. Any methods you guys can recommend?

  I've looked all around and decided to make my own library for accessing the EVE API. Requests are sent to a server address such as /account/Characters.xml.aspx. Characters.xml.aspx requires two item be submitted in POST and then it returns an XML file.   This is a simple question, but I can't work it out. The specifics aren't important, but here's the gist. I have some code like this: var lat = 0; var lon = 0; if (navigator.geolocation) { navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) { lat = position.coords.latitude; lon = position.coords.longitude; }); } What I think it's doing is: Set lat and lon to 0 If the browser has geolocation, overwrite those variables with real values However, at the end of that chunk, lat and lon are still 0. I've tried adding vars, passing lat and lon to the function etc but with no success... How do I make this work?

• How can I leverage String constants in an XML file?

  I'd like to enforce standardized keys by storing them as static final String variables on a Java class, and either referencing or statically importing them, to use them as values in either XML, Strings, Methods, Annotations, etc. Does anyone know a good way to have Maven insert (like filtering) values like StringKeys.SOME_KEY into an XML file? e.g. something like <element value="${StringKeys.SOME_KEY}"/> or similar - the main idea is to enforce commonality and prevent key mis-alignment. Or an alternative solution to accomplish the same - with some semantic that if a non-existant String is referenced, that it fails during build? Bonus points if it works in C# as well.

  Is there a way to change the signal mask of a thread from another thread? I am supposed to write a multithreaded C application that doesn't use mutex, semaphores and condition variables, only signals. So it would look like something like this: The main Thread sends SIGUSR1 to its process and and one of the 2 threads (not including the main thread), will respond to the signal and block SIGUSR1 from the sigmask and sleep. Then the main thread sends SIGUSR1 again, the other thread will respond, block SIGUSR1 from its sigmask, unblock SIGUSR1 from the other threads sigmask, so it will respond to SIGUSR1 again. So essentially whenever the main thread sends SIGUSR1 the two other threads swap between each other. Can somebody help?

  I have a GUI which uses a selection from a popupmenu in another callback. Is there a way to return the selected value of the popupmenu in only one line without creating any temporary variables? I've tried several solutions, but I've only managed two lines with one temporary variable: Three lines: list=get(handles.popupmenu1,'String'); val=get(handles.popupmenu1,'Value'); str=list{val}; Two lines: temp=get(handles.popupmenu1,{'String','Value'}); str=temp{1}{temp{2}}; Can anyone shave it down to one? PS, It's a dynamic menu, so I can't just use get(handles.popupmenu1,'Value') and ignore the string component altogether.)

I have created a swing application that basically has three input strings in JTextFields: loanAmount, interestRate and loanYears and a single submit button with the EventAction. I'm trying to use the java.util.Scanner to parse the input to primitive types that I can use in calculations. • Sinatra Set Settings (Ruby)

  Using Sinatra in Ruby you can set the server's settings by doing: set :myvariable, "MyValue" and then access it anywhere in templates etc with settings.myvariable. In my script I need to be able to re-set these variables falling back to a bunch of defaults. I figured the easiest way to do this would be to have a function that performs all the sets calling it at the start of the Sinatra server and when I need to make the alterations: class MyApp < Sinatra::Application helpers do def set_settings s = settings_from_yaml() set :myvariable, s['MyVariable'] || "default" end end # Here I would expect to be able to do: set_settings() # But the function isn't found! get '/my_path' do if things_go_right set_settings end end # Etc end As explained in the code above, the set_settings function isn't found, am I going about this the wrong way?
