• Rails: Helpers and Models - where to organize code

  More and more I'm putting all of my code in models and helpers concerning MVC. However, sometimes I'm not sure where to organize code. Should it go into the model or should it go into a helper. What are the benefits of each. Is one faster or are they the same. I've heard something about all models getting cached so it seems then like that would be a better place to put most of my code. For example here is a scenario that works in a model or in helper: def status if self.purchased "Purcahsed" elsif self.confirmed "Confirmed" elsif self.reserved "Reserved" else "Pending" end end I don't need to save this status as in the database because there are boolean fields for purchased, and confirmed, and reserved. So why put this in a model or why put it into a helper? So I'm not sure of the best practice or benefits gained on putting code into a model or into helper if it can be in both.

• MySQL: Transactions across multiple threads

  Preliminary: I have an application which maintains a thread pool of about 100 threads. Each thread can last about 1-30 seconds before a new task replaces it. When a thread end, that thread almost always will result in inserting 1-3 records into a table, this table is used by all of the threads. Right now, no transactional support exists, but I am trying to add that now. So... Goal I want to implement a transaction for this. The rules for whether or not this transaction commits or rollback reside in the main thread. Basically there is a simple function that will return a boolean. Can I implement a transaction across multiple connections? If not, can multiple threads share the same connection? (Note: there are a LOT of inserts going on here, and that is a requirement).

• What to name an array of flags?

  I have a project where lots of the objects hold state by maintaining simple boolean flags. There are lots of these, so I maintain them within a uint32_t and use bit masking. There are now so many flags to keep track of, I've created an abstraction for them (just a class wrapping the uint32_t) with set(), clear(), etc. My question: What's a nice accurate, concise name for this class? What name could I give this class so that you'd have a reasonable idea what it was [for] knowing the name only? Some ideas I had: FlagBank FlagArray etc Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Cheers, -Chris

• Cascading S3 Sink Tap not being deleted with SinkMode.REPLACE

  We are running Cascading with a Sink Tap being configured to store in Amazon S3 and were facing some FileAlreadyExistsException (see [1]). This was only from time to time (1 time on around 100) and was not reproducable. Digging into the Cascading codem, we discovered the Hfs.deleteResource() is called (among others) by the BaseFlow.deleteSinksIfNotUpdate(). Btw, we were quite intrigued with the silent NPE (with comment "hack to get around npe thrown when fs reaches root directory"). From there, we extended the Hfs tap with our own Tap to add more action in the deleteResource() method (see [2]) with a retry mechanism calling directly the getFileSystem(conf).delete. The retry mechanism seemed to bring improvement, but we are still sometimes facing failures (see example in [3]): it sounds like HDFS returns isDeleted=true, but asking directly after if the folder exists, we receive exists=true, which should not happen. Logs also shows randomly isDeleted true or false when the flow succeeds, which sounds like the returned value is irrelevant or not to be trusted. Can anybody bring his own S3 experience with such a behavior: "folder should be deleted, but it is not"? We suspect a S3 issue, but could it also be in Cascading or HDFS? We run on Hadoop Cloudera-cdh3u5 and Cascading 2.0.1-wip-dev.   I'm trying to parse a single string and get multiple chunks of data out from the same string with the same regex conditions. I'm parsing a single HTML doc that is static (For an undisclosed reason, I can't use an HTML parser to do the job.) I have an expression that looks like: $string =~ /\<img\ssrc\="(.*)"/; and I want to get the value of $1. However, in the one string, there are many img tags like this, so I need something like an array returned (@1?) is this possible?

• How to convert an arbitrary object to String with JSTL? (calling toString())

  Is there any way to call toString() on an object with the JSTL? (I need the String representation of an enum as index in a map in a JSP EL expression.) I hoped something like ${''+object} would work like in java, but JSTL isn't that nice, and there does not seem to be any function that does it. Clarification: I have a variable somemap that maps Strings to Strings, and I have a variable someenum that is an enumeration. I'd like to do something like ${somemap[someenum.toString()]}. (Of course .toString() does not work, but what does?)

Appears this code is never executed.. is there any particular reason we need this code?   Sorry for the question it might sounds stupid, But: how do you activate a ProgressBar according to the cell you just cliked on ? I have a list view, with a menu that shows after a long press. When I click on one of my option I would like to display the ProgressBar in the listView according to the cell I clicked on. • Would an ORM have any way of determining that a SQLite column contains date-times or booleans?

  I've been thinking about using SQLite for my next project, but I'm concerned that it seems to lack proper datetime and bit data types. If I use DbLinq (or some other ORM) to generate C# classes, will the data types of the properties be "dumbed down"? Will date-time data be placed in properties of type string or double? Will boolean data be placed in properties of type int? If yes, what are the implications? I'm envisioning a scenario where I need to write a whole second layer of classes with more specific data types and do a bunch of transformations and casts, but maybe it's not as bad as I fear. If you have any experience with this or a similar scenario, how did you handle it?

End Sub However, an 'argument not optional' error is thrown at run-time when user double clicks a cell on the sheet. Can someone please suggest how should I pass the paramters? In addition, I am not able to find event names for SelectionChange & BeforeRightClick. • SQL - How can I apply a "semi-unique" constraint?

  Hi, I have a (simplified) table consisting of three columns: id INT PRIMARY KEY NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, foreignID INT NOT NULL, name VARCHAR NOT NULL Basically, I would like to add a constraint (at the database level rather than at the application level) where it only possible for one unique 'name' to exist per foreignID. For example, given the data (id, foreignid, name): 1,1,Name1 2,1,Name2 3,1,Name3 4,2,Name1 5,2,Name2 I want the constraint to fail if the user tries to insert another 'Name3' under foreignId 1, but succeed if the user tries to insert 'Name3' under foreignId 2. For this reason I cannot simply make the whole column UNIQUE. I am having difficulty coming up with a SQL expression to achieve this, can anybody help me? Thanks

I tried to "\@" it and a few other things with not luck. I'm not enough of a jQuery ninja to know how to fix this. Any ideas?

  Hi. I have few columns in my DataGridView, one of them is an unbound column and the DataGridVIew is in VirtualMode. When CellValueNeeded event is called, I want to calculate value of Cells[0] basing on the value of Cells[2] which is in bounded column to the underlaying DataSource. This is how I try to do this: private void dgvItems_CellValueNeeded(object sender, DataGridViewCellValueEventArgs e) { e.Value = dgvItems.CurrentRow.Cells[2].Value * 5; //simplified example } However, I am getting System.StackOverflowException because it seams that call to dgvItems.CurrentRow.Cells[2].Value results in call to another CellValueNeeded event. And so on and so on... However Cells[2] is not an unbound column, so on common sense it should not result in recursive call unless getting value of any column(bound or unbound) firest that event... I can not use here SQL Expression and I can not precalculate e.Value in any SQL call. In real example Cells[2].Value is a key used in HashTable which will return a correct value for the Cells[0] (e.Value). What can I do?

• Regex to identify rows that do not contain exact number of occurences of quotemark character using Notepad++

  I would like to be able to jump to rows that dont contain 6 quotemarks in a quoted-CSV file as it feels like a good way to identify broken rows. I think using a regular expression with Notepad++'s find features would be a sensible approach but I'm not sure how to pick the rows up. 6 quotemarks (") would suggest a complete row so I want to skip to any row that does not contain 6.   This seems like it should be simple but I can't find anything yet. In Reporting Services I have a table with up to 6 rows that all have calculated values and dynamic visibility. I would like to sum these rows. Basically I have a number of invoice items and want to make a total. I can't change anything on the DB side since my stored procedures are used elsewhere in the system. Each row pulls data from a different dataset as well, so I can't do a sum of the dataset. Can I sum all the rows with a table footer? Similarly to totaling a number of rows in Excel? It seems very redundant to put my visibility expression from each row into my footer row to calculate the sum.
