  • Regex and Pattern Matching in Scala

    - by Bruce Ferguson
    I am not strong in regex, and pretty new to Scala. I would like to be able to find a match between the first letter of a word, and one of the letters in a group such as "ABC". In pseudocode, this might look something like: case Process(word) => word.firstLetter match { case([a-c][A-C]) => case _ => } } but I don't know how to grab the first letter in Scala instead of Java, how to express the regular expression properly, nor if it's possible to do this within a case class. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Bruce

  • java: relationship of the Runnable and Thread interfaces

    - by Karl Patrick
    I realize that the method run() must be declared because its declared in the Runnable interface. But my question comes when this class runs how is the Thread object allowed if there is no import call to a particular package? how does runnable know anything about Thread or its methods? does the Runnable interface extend the Thread class? Obviously I don't understand interfaces very well. thanks in advance. class PrimeFinder implements Runnable{ public long target; public long prime; public boolean finished = false; public Thread runner; PrimeFinder(long inTarget){ target = inTarget; if(runner == null){ runner = new Thread(this); runner.start() } } public void run(){ } }

  • C++0x rvalue references - lvalues-rvalue binding

    - by Doug
    This is a follow-on question to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2748866/c0x-rvalue-references-and-temporaries In the previous question, I asked how this code should work: void f(const std::string &); //less efficient void f(std::string &&); //more efficient void g(const char * arg) { f(arg); } It seems that the move overload should probably be called because of the implicit temporary, and this happens in GCC but not MSVC (or the EDG front-end used in MSVC's Intellisense). What about this code? void f(std::string &&); //NB: No const string & overload supplied void g1(const char * arg) { f(arg); } void g2(const std::string & arg) { f(arg); } It seems that, based on the answers to my previous question that function g1 is legal (and is accepted by GCC 4.3-4.5, but not by MSVC). However, GCC and MSVC both reject g2 because of clause 13.3.3.1.4/3, which prohibits lvalues from binding to rvalue ref arguments. I understand the rationale behind this - it is explained in N2831 "Fixing a safety problem with rvalue references". I also think that GCC is probably implementing this clause as intended by the authors of that paper, because the original patch to GCC was written by one of the authors (Doug Gregor). However, I don't this is quite intuitive. To me, (a) a const string & is conceptually closer to a string && than a const char *, and (b) the compiler could create a temporary string in g2, as if it were written like this: void g2(const std::string & arg) { f(std::string(arg)); } Indeed, sometimes the copy constructor is considered to be an implicit conversion operator. Syntactically, this is suggested by the form of a copy constructor, and the standard even mentions this specifically in clause 13.3.3.1.2/4, where the copy constructor for derived-base conversions is given a higher conversion rank than other implicit conversions: A conversion of an expression of class type to the same class type is given Exact Match rank, and a conversion of an expression of class type to a base class of that type is given Conversion rank, in spite of the fact that a copy/move constructor (i.e., a user-defined conversion function) is called for those cases. (I assume this is used when passing a derived class to a function like void h(Base), which takes a base class by value.) Motivation My motivation for asking this is something like the question asked in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2696156/how-to-reduce-redundant-code-when-adding-new-c0x-rvalue-reference-operator-over ("How to reduce redundant code when adding new c++0x rvalue reference operator overloads"). If you have a function that accepts a number of potentially-moveable arguments, and would move them if it can (e.g. a factory function/constructor: Object create_object(string, vector<string>, string) or the like), and want to move or copy each argument as appropriate, you quickly start writing a lot of code. If the argument types are movable, then one could just write one version that accepts the arguments by value, as above. But if the arguments are (legacy) non-movable-but-swappable classes a la C++03, and you can't change them, then writing rvalue reference overloads is more efficient. So if lvalues did bind to rvalues via an implicit copy, then you could write just one overload like create_object(legacy_string &&, legacy_vector<legacy_string> &&, legacy_string &&) and it would more or less work like providing all the combinations of rvalue/lvalue reference overloads - actual arguments that were lvalues would get copied and then bound to the arguments, actual arguments that were rvalues would get directly bound. Questions My questions are then: Is this a valid interpretation of the standard? It seems that it's not the conventional or intended one, at any rate. Does it make intuitive sense? Is there a problem with this idea that I"m not seeing? It seems like you could get copies being quietly created when that's not exactly expected, but that's the status quo in places in C++03 anyway. Also, it would make some overloads viable when they're currently not, but I don't see it being a problem in practice. Is this a significant enough improvement that it would be worth making e.g. an experimental patch for GCC?

  • MS-SQL statement to replace/delete sub-strings

    - by StefanE
    Hi, I have a table with 6 columns containing HTML content with some markups in it and now when moving to a new designed site most of this HTML code has to be deleted. More or less all tags except and . Is there a nice way of doing this, identify all tags end delete them within the data? I'm sure there are no < symbols in the test so a regular expression would maybe work? My alternative is to fecth every row, process it and update the database but I'm guessing this is possible to do in SQL directly. Thanks, Stefan

  • map.resource, parameter restrictions

    - by Tiago
    I've a controller :platform here. I'm trying to do something like: /:platform_name/ to redirect to its show, with the parameter. Here is what I've got: map.resource :platform, :as => ':platform_name', :platform_name => /pc|ps2|ps3|wii|ds|psp|xbox-360/ It's working fine. I've other neasted resources to it, and all them are accessing. But. The problem is, I've only those platform names, but when it doesnt fine another route, it aways fall on this. if I try /whatever/, it will look for the *platform_name = whatever*. I was expecting it to fall into the map.connect ':controller/:action/:id' rule. When I did *:platform_name = /pc|ps2|ps3|wii|ds|psp|xbox-360/*, wasnt expected that this rule only apply when the regular expression is fit? how could i restrict this?

  • Is it possible to use re2 from Python?

    - by flow
    i just discovered http://code.google.com/p/re2, a promising library that uses a long-neglected way (Thompson NFA) to implement a regular expression engine that can be orders of magnitudes faster than the available engines of awk, Perl, or Python. so i downloaded the code and did the usual sudo make install thing. however, that action had seemingly done little more than adding /usr/local/include/re2/re2.h to my system. there seemed to be some `*.a file in addition, but then what is it with this *.a extension? i would like to use re2 from Python (preferrably Python 3.1) and was excited to see files like make_unicode_groups.py in the distro (maybe just used during the build process?). those however were not deployed on my machine. how can i use re2 from Python?

  • numpy.equal with string values

    - by Morgoth
    The numpy.equal function does not work if a list or array contains strings: >>> import numpy >>> index = numpy.equal([1,2,'a'],None) Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> TypeError: function not supported for these types, and can't coerce safely to supported types What is the easiest way to workaround this without looping through each element? In the end, I need index to contain a boolean array indicating which elements are None.

  • Put logic behind generated LinqToSql fields

    - by boris callens
    In a database I use throughout several projects, there is a field that should actually be a boolean but is for reasons nobody can explain to me a field duplicated over two tables where one time it is a char ('Y'/'N') and one time an int (1/0). When I generate a datacontext with LinqToSql the fields off course gets these datatypes. It would be nice if I don't have to drag this stupid choice of datatype throughout the rest of my application. Is there a way to give the generated classes a little bit of logic that just return me return this.equals('Y'); and return this==1; Preferably without having to make an EXTRA field in my partial class. It would be a solution to give the generated field a totally different name that can only be accessed through the partial class and then generate the extra field with the original name with my custom logic in the partial class. I don't know how to alter the accesibility level in my generated class though.. Any suggestions?

  • datagrid column custom check mark

    - by Berryl
    I want a read only column bound to a boolean that shows a check mark image when true and nothing when false. The problem is the false value; I just want to show whatever the background of the datagrid is, but I don't see how to clear the image source. What should the Value of the image source be to do this? Cheers, Berryl <DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate> <DataTemplate> <Image Name="imgChecked" Source="\Img_Checkmark" /> <DataTemplate.Triggers> <DataTrigger Binding="{Binding IsPrimary}" Value="False"> <Setter TargetName="imgChecked" Property="Source" Value=""/> *** ??? *** </DataTrigger> </DataTemplate.Triggers> </DataTemplate> </DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate>

  • How can I make a Yes/No combobox return true/false?

    - by Kasper Hansen
    I am new to creating forms in Visual Studio and C#. But I made a UI that has some comboboxes where the DropDownStyle is DropDownList. The items shown is Yes and No. But I need to assign this as a boolean value to a property on some object ai and currently do this: if (cmbExample.Text == "Yes") { ai.isPacketType = true; } else if (cmbExample.Text == "No") { ai.isPacketType = false; } I basically want to do something like this (or some other one liner): ai.isPacketType = cmbExample.Text; How do I link the Text Yes to the value true and No to false?

  • Making the shadow from a ScatterViewItem a different shape

    - by Vargen
    I am developing a program for Surface using Expression Blend and Visual Studio. I have a custom user control with an ellipse and a label in a grid. This will need to be placed in a scatterViewItem. My problem is that the scatterviewitem will cast a rectangle shaped shadow under the ellipse shaped content. I can disable the shadow completely, but is there any way to make the shadow inherit the shape from its parent? Or can i set the shape of the scatterviewItem itself in any way?

  • Programming style: should you return early if a guard condition is not satisfied?

    - by John Topley
    One thing I've sometimes wondered is which is the better style out of the two shown below (if any)? Is it better to return immediately if a guard condition hasn't been satisfied, or should you only do the other stuff if the guard condition is satisfied? For the sake of argument, please assume that the guard condition is a simple test that returns a boolean, such as checking to see if an element is in a collection, rather than something that might affect the control flow by throwing an exception. // Style 1 public SomeType aMethod() { SomeType result = null; if (!guardCondition()) { return result; } doStuffToResult(result); doMoreStuffToResult(result); return result; } // Style 2 public SomeType aMethod() { SomeType result = null; if (guardCondition()) { doStuffToResult(result); doMoreStuffToResult(result); } return result; }

  • JSF composite component - weird behavior when trying to save state

    - by jc12
    I'm using Glassfish 3.2.2 and JSF 2.1.11 I'm trying to create a composite component that will take as parameters a string and a max number of characters and then will show only the max amount of characters, but it will have a "more" link next to it, that when clicked will expand the text to the full length and will then have a "less" link next to it to take it back to the max number of characters. I'm seeing some weird behavior, so I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong. Here is my composite component definition: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:composite="http://java.sun.com/jsf/composite" xmlns:h="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html" xmlns:fn="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/functions" xmlns:p="http://primefaces.org/ui"> <composite:interface componentType="expandableTextComponent"> <composite:attribute name="name" required="true"/> <composite:attribute name="maxCharacters" required="true"/> <composite:attribute name="value" required="true"/> </composite:interface> <composite:implementation> <h:panelGroup id="#{cc.attrs.name}"> <h:outputText value="#{fn:substring(cc.attrs.value, 0, cc.attrs.maxCharacters)}" rendered="#{fn:length(cc.attrs.value) le cc.attrs.maxCharacters}"/> <h:outputText value="#{fn:substring(cc.attrs.value, 0, cc.attrs.maxCharacters)}" rendered="#{fn:length(cc.attrs.value) gt cc.attrs.maxCharacters and !cc.expanded}" style="margin-right: 5px;"/> <h:outputText value="#{cc.attrs.value}" rendered="#{fn:length(cc.attrs.value) gt cc.attrs.maxCharacters and cc.expanded}" style="margin-right: 5px;"/> <p:commandLink actionListener="#{cc.toggleExpanded()}" rendered="#{fn:length(cc.attrs.value) gt cc.attrs.maxCharacters}" update="#{cc.attrs.name}"> <h:outputText value="#{__commonButton.more}..." rendered="#{!cc.expanded}"/> <h:outputText value="#{__commonButton.less}" rendered="#{cc.expanded}"/> </p:commandLink> </h:panelGroup> </composite:implementation> </html> And here is the Java component: @FacesComponent("expandableTextComponent") public class ExpandableTextComponent extends UINamingContainer { boolean expanded; public boolean isExpanded() { return expanded; } public void toggleExpanded() { expanded = !expanded; } } Unfortunately expanded is always false every time the toggleExpanded function is called. However if I change the composite component to the following then it works. <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:composite="http://java.sun.com/jsf/composite" xmlns:h="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html" xmlns:fn="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/functions" xmlns:p="http://primefaces.org/ui"> <composite:interface componentType="expandableTextComponent"> <composite:attribute name="name" required="true"/> <composite:attribute name="maxCharacters" required="true"/> <composite:attribute name="value" required="true"/> </composite:interface> <composite:implementation> <h:panelGroup id="#{cc.attrs.name}"> <h:outputText value="#{fn:substring(cc.attrs.value, 0, cc.attrs.maxCharacters)}" rendered="#{fn:length(cc.attrs.value) le cc.attrs.maxCharacters}"/> <h:outputText value="#{fn:substring(cc.attrs.value, 0, cc.attrs.maxCharacters)}" rendered="#{fn:length(cc.attrs.value) gt cc.attrs.maxCharacters and !cc.expanded}" style="margin-right: 5px;"/> <p:commandLink actionListener="#{cc.toggleExpanded()}" rendered="#{fn:length(cc.attrs.value) gt cc.attrs.maxCharacters and !cc.expanded}" update="#{cc.attrs.name}" process="@this"> <h:outputText value="#{__commonButton.more}..."/> </p:commandLink> <h:outputText value="#{cc.attrs.value}" rendered="#{fn:length(cc.attrs.value) gt cc.attrs.maxCharacters and cc.expanded}" style="margin-right: 5px;"/> <p:commandLink actionListener="#{cc.toggleExpanded()}" rendered="#{fn:length(cc.attrs.value) gt cc.attrs.maxCharacters and cc.expanded}" update="#{cc.attrs.name}" process="@this"> <h:outputText value="#{__commonButton.less}"/> </p:commandLink> </h:panelGroup> </composite:implementation> </html> If I place a breakpoint in the toggleExpanded function, it only gets called on the "more" link and not the "less" link. So the question is why doesn't it get called when I click on the "less" link? Shouldn't this code be equivalent to the code above? Is there a better way to save state in a component?

  • Determine if Alpha Channel is Used in an Image

    - by Otaku
    As I'm bringing in images into my program, I want to determine if: they have an alpha-channel if that alpha-channel is used #1 is simple enough with using Image.IsAlphaPixelFormat. For #2 though, other than looping through every single pixel, is there a simple way I can determine if at least one of the pixels has an alpha channel that is used (i.e. set to some other value than 255)? All I need back is a boolean and then I'll make determination as to whether to save it out to 32-bit or 24-bit.

  • Matching of tuples

    - by Jack
    From what I understood I can use pattern-matching in a match ... with expression with tuples of values, so something like match b with ("<", val) -> if v < val then true else false | ("<=", val) -> if v <= val then true else false should be correct but it gives me a syntax error as if the parenthesis couldn't be used: File "ocaml.ml", line 41, characters 14-17: Error: Syntax error: ')' expected File "ocaml.ml", line 41, characters 8-9: Error: This '(' might be unmatched referring on first match clause.. Apart from that, can I avoid matching strings and applying comparisons using a sort of eval of the string? Or using directly the comparison operator as the first element of the tuple?

  • A Simulator for a non-deterministic Push-Down Automaton

    - by shake
    Well, i need to make simulator for non-deterministic Push-Down Automaton. Everything is okey, i know i need to do recursion or something similar. But i do not know how to make that function which would simulate automaton. I got everything else under control, automaton generator, stack ... I am doing it in java, so this is maybe only issue that man can bump on, and i did it. So if anyone have done something similar, i could use advices. This is my current organisation of code: C lasses: class transit: list -contains non deterministic transitions state input sign stack sign class generator it generate automaton from file clas NPA public boolean start() - this function i am having trouble with Of course problem of separate stacks, and input for every branch. I tried to solve it with collection of objects NPA and try to start every object, but it doesn work :((..

  • scala REPL is slow on vista

    - by Jacques René Mesrine
    I installed scala-2.8.0.RC3 by extracting the tgz file into my cygwin (vista) home directory. I made sure to set $PATH to scala-2.8.0.RC3/bin. I start the REPL by typing: $ scala Welcome to Scala version 2.8.0.RC3 (Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM, Java 1.6.0_20). Type in expressions to have them evaluated. Type :help for more information. scala> Now when I tried to enter an expression scala> 1 + 'a' the cursor hangs there without any response. Granted that I have chrome open with a million tabs and VLC playing in the background, but CPU utilization was 12% and virtual memory was about 75% utilized. What's going on ? Do I have to set the CLASSPATH or perform other steps.

  • E4X in ActionScript

    - by Brian Genisio
    Hey all, Looking at the E4X implementation in ActionScript, it occurs to me that they had to figure out how to do three things that I am not sure can be done within ActionScript regularly: Properties/Getters prefixed with @: var myAttribute = xmlPerson.@name; Nameless functions for filtering: xmlData.person.(/* predicate */) lambda syntax for predicates: xmlData.person.(@name == "Brian") So here is my question: Are these just one-off capabilities (much like Vector.<>) they put in just for E4X, therefore keeping out of reach for us? Or do we, as ActionScript developers, have access to these features? More specifically, I'd love to get access to the expression tree of that lambda predicate for my own code (not tied to the XML classes in any way). I figured out that this is called the "filter operator"... but I am not sure how to harness it. Not sure I can... since ActionScript does not allow for operator overloading :(

  • Python comparing string against several regular expressions

    - by maerics
    I'm pretty experienced with Perl and Ruby but new to Python so I'm hoping someone can show me the Pythonic way to accomplish the following task. I want to compare several lines against multiple regular expressions and retrieve the matching group. In Ruby it would be something like this: STDIN.each_line do |line| case line when /^A:(.*?)$/ then puts "FOO: #{$1}" when /^B:(.*?)$/ then puts "BAR: #{$1}" # when ... else puts "NO MATCH: #{line}" end end My attempts in Python are turning out pretty ugly because the matching group is returned from a call to match/search on a regular expression and Python has no assignment in conditionals or switch statements. What's the Pythonic way to do (or think!) about this problem?

  • The Elegant way to handle Cyclic Event in Java ??

    - by dex
    Hi fellows, i think this not a specific problem to me; everybody might have encountered this issue before. To properly illustrate it, here's a simple UI: As you can see, those two spinners are controlling a single variable -- "A". The only difference is that they control it using different views. If i change the top spinner, "A" will be changed and the bottom spinner's value will also be updated accordingly. However, updating the bottom spinner's call (such as setValue) will also trigger another event instructing the top spinner to update based on the bottom spinner's value. Thus creates a bad cycle which can eventually cause a StackOverFlow exception. My previously solution is kinda cumbersome: i placed a guarding boolean to indicate whether the 2nd updating call should be performed. Now i'd like to ask "how can i handle such situation elegantly?" thx
