• Are there some types of software that cannot be developed by all major programming languages?

  I'd like to know if some of the major programming languages can absolutely not be used to create some very specific types of software. By major programming language I mean the likes of C++, C#, Java, Ruby, Python. By "cannot be developed" I mean cannot be developed or it is unrealistic to do it due to performance, difficulty of implementation, etc. I've always thought that any programming language could be used to solve any problem but lately I've been thinking that some languages are unsuitable for some projects. If you can provide examples of such applications, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Is it possible to grant access to a folder in a SVN server using SVN's API?

  I need to develop a web application (Using any language but I'm familiar with Frameworks Symfony2 and Rails), that is able to grant access to a user to a determined folder on another server on the same network from the application's front-end. I found out that SVN has an API and that I could interact with it with PHP or Ruby (Apparently), although I would be willing to program the application on another language, the server where the files are stored is using Windows and I thought on using Virtual SVN server, however I can't find any function on the API to grant users access to files and/or folders or access of any kind, like you usually do using the GUI (VirtualSVN on Windows). Am I missing anything? Is this even possible?

• STL for games, yea or nay?

  Every programming language has its standard library of containers, algorithms, and other helpful stuff. With languages like C#, Java, and Python, it's practically inconceivable to use the language without its standard lib. Yet, on many C++ games I've worked on, we either didn't use the STL at all, used a tiny fraction of it, or used our own implementation. It's hard to tell if that was a sound decision for our games, or one simply made out of ignorance of the STL. So... is the STL a good fit or not?

• Would you see any use of a Trilean (True, False, ??)

  I don't know if I'm alone but sometimes I have a function that should return true or false. But in some case there would be a third result that would make more sense. In some language theses cases would be handled with integers or with exception. For exemple you want to handle the age of a user if he is over 18 years old. And you have a function like this. if(user.isAdult(country_code)){ //Go On }else{ // Block access or do nothing } But in some case depending how your app is built I could see case where the birthday field is incomplete. Then this function should return something undetermined. switch(user.isAdult()){ case true: // go on break; case undetermined: //Inform user birthday is incomplete case false: //Block access } As i said we can handle that with Exceptions and Int, but I would find it quite sexy to have a true, false, undetermined embeded in the language instead of using some home defined constants.

The API will have authentication to protect private data. The front-end sends GET and POST requests to the API. A MVC framework can be used, such as Backbone, Angular, or Ember.js. • How easy is it to change languages/frameworks professionally? [closed]

  Forgive me for asking a career related question - I know that they can be frowned upon here, but I think that this one is general enough to be useful to many people. My question is: How easy/difficult is it to get a job using language/frameowork B, when your current job uses language/framework A? e.g. If you use C#/ASP.NET in your current job, how difficult would it be to get a job using python/django, or PHP/Zend, or whatever (the specifics of the example don't matter). Relatedly, if you work in client side scripting, but perhaps work on server-side projects in your own time, how difficult would it be to switch to server-side professionally? So, to sum up, does the choice of which languages/frameworks use at work tend to box you in professionally?

• What are the Open Source alternatives to WPF/XAML?

  If we've learned anything from HTML/CSS it's that, declarative languages (like XML) work best to describe User Interfaces because: It's easy to build code preprocessors that can template the code effectively. The code is in a well defined well structured (ideally) format so it's easy to parse. The technology to effectively parse or crawl an XML based source file already exists. The UIs scripted code becomes much simpler and easier to understand. It simple enough that designers are able to design the interface themselves. Programmers suck at creating UIs so it should be made easy enough for designers. I recently took a look at the meat of a WPF application (ie. the XAML) and it looks surprisingly familiar to the declarative language style used in HTML. It's apparent to me that the current state of desktop UI development is largely fractionalized, otherwise there wouldn't be so much duplicated effort in the domain of graphical user interface design (IE. GTK, XUL, Qt, Winforms, WPF, etc). There are 45 GUI platforms for Python alone It's seems reasonable to me that there should be a general purpose, open source, standardized, platform independent, markup language for designing desktop GUIs. Much like what the W3C made HTML/CSS into. WPF, or more specifically XAML seems like a pretty likely step in the right direction. Now that the 'browser wars' are over should we look forward to a future of 'desktop gui wars?' Note: This topic is relatively subjective in the attempt to be 'future-thinking.' I think that desktop GUI development in its current state sucks ((really)hard) and, even though WPF is still in it's infancy, it presents a likely solution to the problem. • What do I need to write a small game on Linux?

  I want to make a simple game: 2d, single-player, without tons of animations and special effects. I am not interested in ready to use game engines, I want to learn to write some code in a quite universal language. I am using Linux (AMD64) and looking for something easy with nice library for games. I do not want to mix few languages, most of them are in fact fast enough themselves for my needs. Cross platform would be an advantage, however all I need is a good Linux support. I have been considering few solutions. Ruby + Language looks very nice. + I am going to learn Ruby. - I am afraid I can have problems with additional libraries. - This thread about game libraries for Ruby could be longer. SDL + C + It is used for games. + It is very easy to set up. + There is a lot of additional libraries. + It is cross-platform. - The solution is quite low level. - The language is sometimes quite hard to read. QT + C++ + It is very easy to set up. + The standard QT libraries supports everything I can possibly need. + It is cross-platform. + The documentation is good. - The compilation is slow. - The language looks horrible. - The size of standard QT libraries is too big to comprehend. Environment of web browser + I am going to learn something more about this environment. + It is somewhat used for games. + It is quite cross-platform. - It would be too much experimental. • Invalid byte 1 of 1-byte UTF-8 sequence

  I have a MyFaces Facelets application, where the page coding is a bit rugged. Anyway, it's developed with Eclipse and built with Ant, and kindof runs ok in Tomcat 2.0.26. So far so good. Now, I'd rather build with Maven, so I made a couple of pom-files, opened them in Netbeans and built, and now I have a war file that deploys ok. However, on any facelet page it barfs out with com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.impl.io.MalformedByteSequenceException: Invalid byte 1 of 1-byte UTF-8 sequence. at com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.impl.io.UTF8Reader.invalidByte(UTF8Reader.java:684) at com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.impl.io.UTF8Reader.read(UTF8Reader.java:554) at com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.impl.XMLEntityScanner.load(XMLEntityScanner.java:1742) So, I've tried a lot of different things, and the application actually run simple pages without facelet stuff. But, everything runs if I just build with Ant instead ... So my question is: What's the most likely difference between an ant build and a maven build that may cause this? It also seems that even though I've configured for UTF-8 in Netbeans and pom-files, Netbeans eventually ends up reporting the facelet files as ISO-8859-1 after some editing. I've made sure that most central libs are of same version (especially xerces 2.3.0), I've added an encoding servlet filter that had no effect. And, I'd rather fix the maven build and keep the buggy pages, than the other way around ... it's my intention to introduce Naven, not fix buggy pages.

  I have an Action that needs to read a file from a secure location, so I have to use impersonation to read the file. But if I replace these 2 lines: var bytes = System.IO.File.ReadAllBytes(path); return File(bytes, "application/octet-stream", "FileName"); with this: return File(path, "application/octet-stream", "FileName"); It does NOT work and I get the error message: Access to the path 'c:\projects\uploads\1\aa2bcbe7-ea99-499d-add8-c1fdac561b0e\Untitled 2.csv' is denied. I guess using the File results with a path, tries to open the file at a later time in the request pipeline when I have already "undone" the impersonation. Remember, the impersonation code works because I can read the file in the bytes array. What I want to do though is stream the file to the client. Any idea how I can work around this?   Hi, Im loading an image from a SQL CE db and then trying to load that into a PictureBox. • Excel 2007 file writer in C# results in a corrupt file

  Hi, I am using a BinaryReader to read an Excel 2007 file from an Exchange mailbox using a OWA, the file is then written to disk using a BinaryWriter. My problem is that the two files don't match when the writer finishes. Worse still Excel 2007 won't open the writen file. Previously Excel 2003 has had no problem with the solution below. And Excel 2007 doesn't have an issue if the file is an Excel 2003 format file, only if the file format is Excel 2007 (*.xlsx). • C++ linking error when linking postgresql

  When compiling my code I run into an issue as follows: io.cpp:21: undefined reference to `PQconnectdb' as well as all other instances of missing postgres function calls occurring in my code. Obviously this is a linking problem, I'm just not sure what the link issue is. I'm compiling with the following: mpiCC -c -O2 -g -Wall -Werror -I /usr/include/postgresql/ decisioning_mpi.cpp g++ -c -O2 -g -Wall -Werror -I /usr/include/postgresql/ io.cpp g++ -c -O2 -g -Wall -Werror -I /usr/include/postgresql/ calculations.cpp g++ -c -O2 -g -Wall -Werror -I /usr/include/postgresql/ rules.cpp g++ -c -O2 -g -Wall -Werror -I /usr/include/postgresql/ Instrument.cpp g++ -c -O2 -g -Wall -Werror -I /usr/include/postgresql/ Backtest_Parameter_CPO.cpp g++ -c -O2 -g -Wall -Werror -I /usr/include/postgresql/ Backtest_Trade_CPO.cpp g++ -c -O2 -g -Wall -Werror -I /usr/include/postgresql/ Data_Bar.cpp mpiCC -o decisioning_mpi -O2 -g -Wall -Werror -L/usr/lib -lm -lpq decisioning_mpi.o io.o calculations.o rules.o Instrument.o Backtest_Parameter_CPO.o Backtest_Trade_CPO.o Data_Bar.o It should be noted that this is the correct directory for libpq-fe.h and that I'm linking pq, so I'm not exactly sure why the postgres functions aren't linking correctly. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 and installed psql (PostgreSQL) 9.1.6 from synaptic. As well I'll short circuit this, I am using #include "libpq-fe.h". Any ideas on how I can get this linking issue resolved?
