• JavaFX Makeover for JFugue Music NotePad

  Bengt-Erik Fröberg from Sweden, one of the developers working on ProSang, the leading Scandinavian blood bank system (and based on the NetBeans Platform), is reworking the user interface of the JFugue Music NotePad. In particular, the Score window (named ScoreFX window below) contains components that are now quite clearly JavaFX, instead of Swing. Looks a lot better and also performs better. The sliders in the Keyboard window are candidates for being similarly redone to use JavaFX instead of Swing. Want to do something similar? • Render a 3D scene in multiple windows - extended panoramic view

  Is there any resource location on how to view a 3D scene from an application or a game on multiple windows or monitors? Each window should continue drawing from where the neighbouring one left off (in the end, the result should be a mosaic of the scene). My idea is to use a camera for each window and have a reference position and orientation for a meta-camera object that is used to correctly offset the other camera. Since there are quite some elements to consider (window specs, viewport properties, position-orientation of each render camera), what is the correct way to update the individual cameras considering the position and orientation of the central, meta-camera? I currently cannot make the cameras present the scene contiguously (and I am reluctant in working out the transformations without checking whether this is the actual way of doing things).

• Ubuntu 12.04 update + VirtualBox VM 4.1.14 r77440 - No input

  I can only enter my password with the keyboard and this is what I see after I login If I try to switch to a terminal with CtrlAlt+F1 I get this I don't have a clue how to fix this, or if it's even possible to fix this without access to a terminal. The recovery console does not work either. It opens, but keyboard input doesn't seem to be working for it either. Anybody had this happened? Update (next day) Keyboard input lets me do Alt+F2 and invoke a terminal, but I can't change focus to the terminal window that opens. Any tip on how to switch focus (Alt+Tab wont work) to the terminal window. Maybe looking at this you might have a clue what's going on, maybe there's no window manager loading?

• How to prevent a Gtk.SourceView from grabbing the URI of a file

  I'm making a text editor using GTK3 in Vala. I need to drag a file and, when I drop it into the application window, the application opens that file. I'm using a Gtk.Notebook that contains the Gtk.SourceView's. It works when I drop a file into an empty Gtk.Notebook, but when there is at least one Gtk.SourceView's appended on it, the SourceView grab the URI of the file, shows it and the window can't handle the opening of the file. In this case, what can I do to prevent a Gtk.SourceView from grabbing the uri of a file when I drop a file into a Gtk.SourceView. PS: I tried to use the drag_dest_unset() inside the SourceView derived class. It worked, the SourceView didn't grab the URI and the window could open the file, but the application showed a message like this, in runtime: Gtk-WARNING **: Can't set a target list on a widget until you've called gtk_drag_dest_set() to make the widget into a drag destination

• Logging in over and over again. How to fix this?

  Ok, I messed up. I installed ubuntu 11.10, installed awesome wm and removed unity, to have something to fall back on, I also installed gnome-session-fallback. I was messing around and did the following, because the awesome wiki told me to: gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop False # Still disable the buggy Nautilus desktop thing gconftool-2 --type string --set /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager awesome # sets awesome as wm Now here's what's wrong: I can start up decently, and then I get into a login window (that of gnome-session-fallback). I enter my username, select the preferred window manager (awesome in my case) and enter my password. It accepts these, but then hold for a second and just opens the login window again, in effect preventing me from actually logging in. I also tried gconftool-2 --unset (from the tty) on these settings, but that didn't work either. What can I do to revert the gconftool-2 settings to something that should work? I tried apt-get purging gnome-session-fallback and lightdm, and then installing them again, but that didn't work.

  I'm fairly excited for Unity, as it looks like a promising new direction for Ubuntu. However, I do have a concern - will it be possible to use Unity without the global menu? I have my window manager set to focus-follows-mouse/sloppy focus, and find the productivity gains to be immense. Sloppy focus is incompatible, however, with global menus, as it is possible for the focus to change while you move from window to menu. Will Unity support an option to use window menus while still using Unity?

• Flashing task bar(firefox) in lxde panel and ubuntu internal error

  I have upgraded from ubuntu10.04 to 12.04 and installed lxde. The panel is now customized according to my convenience. The problem is there was a default checked option for "Flash when there is any window requiring attention" in Task bar(window list) and now when I run firefox, at times the concerned bar in the panel window list starts flashing but it is not clear exactly why at that moment firefox requires my attention. Normally this happens after I download some files (pdf files) and keep using firefox. The only solution I have found is to quit firefox and even after that I receive this message "Sorry, ubuntu12.04 has experienced an internal error. If you notice further problems, try restarting the computer." As usual I report the detailed message to ubuntu as suggested and finally restart the computer. So there are two problems, first, exactly why firefox needs my attention at times and second, why immediately after this, ubuntu experiences an internal error. Please suggest what I should do.

• Why are my file selection dialogs so big? How do I make them smaller?

  When I use an external monitor, my file selection dialog boxes seem to be huge -- wider than my larger screen. I assume it is a nautilus issue since it happens whether I'm trying to open a file to upload (in firefox) or attach (in thunderbird) or just open it in LibreOffice. See screenshot: The browser window fills my left-hand monitor, the "open" dialog is wider than one screen, and wider than the window that spawned it. It's huge. It didn't used to be huge. Is there some way to force dialog windows to be smaller by default? Whenever I try to open/attach/upload a file I have to re-size the finder dialog before I can see what I'm looking at. I don't understand why it is defaulting to such a huge window.

• Ubuntu Wifi Not Connecting (And keeps asking for authentication every minute or so)

  This is a problem in 12.10 that has been driving me nuts, and it's a problem with the wifi. Ubuntu will never connect to the network. All of my other devices work fine. What will happen is I will type in the password, the authentication window will go away, and the Wifi icon will pulsate for a while. Then about a minute later, a window will pop up asking for authentication to join the same wifi network. If you type in the password again it will do the same thing, and even if you hit [Cancel], the window will still pop back up in another minute. This is a very irritating thing.

  I did change the keyboard shortcuts for window navigation in Unity to use hjkl (vim movement). I did reassign the shortcuts via GUI in System Settings Keyboard Shortcuts. Here are two examples of the assigned shortcuts: Move window one workspace to the left = Shift+Ctrl+Alt+H Switch to workspace left = Ctrl+Alt+H Occasionally, when restarting the maching, these shortcuts are being reset to theit default values: Move window one workspace to the left = Shift+Ctrl+Alt+Left Switch to workspace left = Ctrl+Alt+Left How can I make these changes permanent? Can someone help me, narrowing down the problem?

• Application for taking pretty screenshots (like OS X does)

  I've been building a website for a guy who uses Mac OS X and occasionally he sends me screenshots of bugs. They come out looking like this: This is fairly typical of Mac screenshots. You get the window decorations, the shadow from the window and a white or transparent background (not the desktop wallpaper -- I've checked). Compare this to an Ubuntu window-shot (Alt+Print screen): It's impossible to keep a straight face and say the Ubuntu one anywhere near as elegant. My question is: Is there an application that can do this in Ubuntu? Edit: Follow up: Is there an application that can do this in one move? Shutter is pretty good but running the plugin for every screenshot is pretty tiresome as it doesn't seem to remember my preference (I want south-shadow and that requires selecting south, then clicking refresh, then save) and it's more clicks than I'd like. Is there a simple way of telling shutter I want south-shadow for all screenshots (except entire desktop and area-selection)?

• Gnome/Nautilus does not remember individual folder's size/position?

  I am using ubuntu 11.04 and I have noticed that Gnome/Nautilus remembers a "global" setting for size/position using the last window open instead of remembering an individual size/position for each folder. Also, this applies for some applications as well. I find this a real productivity killer and I think its one of the most basic features of a window manager. Funny thing is, that windows had this feature for a long time now. I have tried devilspie but I find it would be really time wasting to configure every folder that way. Is there any fix for this issue, if not what window manager would you suggest me? Thank you!

• How to move a rectangle properly?

  I recently started to learn OpenGL. Right now I finished the first chapter of the "OpenGL SuperBible". There were two examples. The first had the complete code and showed how to draw a simple triangle. The second example is supposed to show how to move a rectangle using SpecialKeys. The only code provided for this example was the SpecialKeys method. I still tried to implement it but I had two problems. In the previous example I declared and instaciated vVerts in the SetupRC() method. Now as it is also used in the SpecialKeys() method, I moved the declaration and instantiation to the top of the code. Is this proper c++ practice? I copied the part where vertex positions are recalculated from the book, but I had to pick the vertices for the rectangle on my own. So now every time I press a key for the first time the rectangle's upper left vertex is moved to (-0,5:-0.5). This ok because of GLfloat blockX = vVerts[0]; //Upper left X GLfloat blockY = vVerts[7]; // Upper left Y But I also think that this is the reason why my rectangle is shifted in the beginning. • Strange behaviour when screencasting

  Since an update I did yesterday I am not able to screencast any video using Kazam, Recordmydesktop or even ffmpeg/aviconv. After the upgrade to some libraries (A normal update that showed in Update manager) the problem was this: When doing the screencast, scrolling inside an Apps window like Firefox, Chrome or Gedit is not shown. The video only shows the last image it recognized before I started scrolling. For example with Gedit, I have a lot of text on it and when I start to scroll down, the video only shows what I had in the beginning while I listen to myself talk about what is in the rest of the file (Which is not shown in the video). When opening a window, for example again Gedit or Chrome it might not show in the video, it will just show the desktop without the window opened. I do not see any error with dmesg, syslog or others. What can I check to debug this problem?

• UndoRedo on Nodes (Part 2)

  After the recording of the latest API Design Tip for the upcoming NetBeans Podcast, Jaroslav Tulach helped me with the problem I blogged about yesterday. First he expressed surprise at seeing Undo/Redo work on Nodes, which was never the intention, i.e., that feature was always intended for documents, e.g., the Java editor. However, he then showed me where to find the Properties window in the NetBeans sources, where it is org.netbeans.core.windows.view.ui.NbSheet. It turns out that the Properties window does not have an activated node and hence the Node that implements UndoRedo.Manager is never put in the Lookup. Once we added, on line 303, "this.setActivatedNodes(nodes);", everything worked as expected, i.e., the Undo/Redo actions are now enabled, even when the Properties window is selected: Maybe it means I should file an issue to get that line added to NbSheet?

  I wonder if there are benign use-cases for simulating mouse clicks using event.initMouseEvent. I found that it is used for creating pop-under ads in the following way: var e = document.createEvent('MouseEvents'); e.initMouseEvent('click', true, true, window, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, true, false, false, true, 0, null); a.dispatchEvent(e); This code simulates a click on the opening browser window, to force the newly opened window beneath it. Evil. I'm thinking of simply preventing all simulated clicks in my own browser via a browser extension, but I wonder if I might break useful websites and behavior in the process. Therefore I wonder what situations justify simulating mouse clicks, and if there are big sites that use it in non-evil ways.

• What's involved in resetting the graphics device?

  I'm playing with XNA 4.0, VS2010. I've created a window (not maximized) and drawn some sprites. All is good until I resize the window, after which the sprites stop displaying or only partially display. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with needing to reset the device or something, but can't find any clear instructions or sample code. It's not just a case of needing to increase the preferredbackbuffer size, because even if I shrink the window I get this symptom. I've looked at the source code that I was able to get from Microsoft before they shut down XNA, but it doesn't actually explain anything. Any help or advice? If it makes any difference I'm creating DrawableGameComponents and doing my updates and drawing in their Draw/Update routines.

• NetBeans does not install properly

  I'm trying to install NetBeans IDE on my Ubuntu 12.04. However no matter how many time i install/resintall it (from Software Center), it still gives this strange problem: After I complete the installation and try to launch it, Netbeans first displays the initialization window. After it completes, the window disappears and nothing happens. Then after a while Netbeans seemingly restarts and then again shows the initialization window. This goes on in an infinitesimal cycle and I'm ultimately forced to restart my computer and uninstall NetBeans. Why could this be happening? I really need NetBeans as it is a very good IDE.

• How to find and fix issue with Pound and HAProxy

  Pound sits in front of HAProxy (on the same box) to perform SSL off-load. Requests are passed to 127.0.0.1:80 where HAProxy then balances the requests across backend servers for a hosted ASP .NET web app. A user is getting HTTP error 500 (Internal Server Error) returned to their browser this morning and I can see it is comming from Pound. They see no log entry in their web app (IIS) server logs, so its not hitting the back end servers. I think the problem is possibly with HAProxy. • Any way to view dynamic java content ex-post? Browser session still open

  I feel like a grandpa from 1996 asking this, but is it at all possible to view a representation of a particular screen that was rendered as part of a java-based online checkout process I executed a couple days ago? I haven't cleared my browser cache or temp files or anything, and I don't think I've restarted the comp or even the browser since. I'm using mac OS X 10.6.8, and the page(s) were viewed with Chrome version 21.0.1180.89 in standard mode (not incognito). Specifically the page in question was part of Verizon Wireless's 'iconic' contract/checkout process, which leads the user through several pages to make selections on various criteria and seems to be based on java. (Obviously I'm a dummy regarding web stuff so the question is probably not very well defined, I'm happy to elaborate). ^This is the tl;dr question. If it belongs on another site please just let me know. Of course, clicking the link to the page in History right now requires a new sign-in and just returns the user to the initial step for doing the process again; it does not pull up a representation of the page as it was seen several days ago. Instead using Chrome's integrated cache viewer by typing about:cache in the address bar, I can search and find links that appear to be relevant, when I click on the link I just get a http header and a bunch of hexadecimal gobbledygook. I've tried to use the URL at the top of the cache and URLs in the http headers, but they take me to current versions of those pages and not the versions I saw during the checkout process. I tried this with a few of them but stopped because I noticed that it updated the date in the http header to the present moment and I don't want to take chances overwriting the cache files since I don't know what I'm doing. (It's clear I can't achieve what I'm looking for by visiting current versions of these pages on the web…I should actually probably disable my network adapter while testing this out). The cache folder seems promising, but I don't know what to make of all that hexadecimal mess - if it contains what I'm looking for and if so, how to view it. Finally, the third thing I've come across is the Google Chrome cache folder on my local machine, at ~/Library/Caches/Google/Chrome/ then there are 'Default' and 'Media Cache' folders within. There are ~4,000 files in the former averaging ~100kb each, and 100 files in the latter averaging ~900kb each. The filenames all start "f_00xxxx" except for files titled data_0 through data_4 in each folder. I'm not sure how to observe the contents of these files and don't really want to start opening them up and potentially overwriting existing cached pages, as I notice there are already some holes in the arrangement of the files which I have never deleted manually. Hopefully this is an easy question to answer for someone who knows this stuff, admittedly web stuff is my weak point. As such, I've spent the past five hours searching around and trying to provide all the information I can. I'm probably asking for a miracle - like can those cached pages full of hexadecimal data be used to recreate the representation of the information that was on screen during the process? Or could screenshots of the previously viewed webpages be lurking in the /Caches folder? I have doubt because the content wasn't viewed at a permanent link, rather it seems like the on-screen information was served by Verizon's db, and probably securely so. I'm just not sure if Chrome saves the visual rendering of the page contents somewhere, even just temporarily.
