• Problems with HP laptop

  So the problem is...every time I reboot or shutdown laptop and when the laptop is booting again I get screen (before loading OS) that HP discovered overheating and system went into hibernate. But the point is that laptop is not overheating nor going into hibernate by itself. Also becouse of the hybrid graphic cards I cannot install additional drivers. Desktop resolution and all works perfectly but I cannot use unity 3D also openGL doesn't work as it should (with cairo docks) As i've read some posts, people say that switcheero doesn't work on 12.04 so I haven't tried it.

• Learning about security and finding exploits

  First things first: I have absolutely no interest in learning how to crack systems for personal enrichment, hurting other people or doing anything remotely malicious. I understand the basis of many exploits (XSS, SQL injection, use after free etc.), though I've never performed any myself. I even have some idea about how to guard web applications from common exploits (like the aforementioned XSS and SQL injection) Reading this question about the Internet Explorer zero-day vulnerability from the Security SE piqued my curiosity and made me wonder: how did someone even find out about this exploit? What tools did they use? How did they know what to look for? I'm wary about visiting hacker dens online for fear of getting my own system infected (the Defcon stories make me paranoid). So what's a good, safe place to start learning?

• Open Source Client-Based Project Management?

  For quite some time I've been searching for a web-based, open-source project management program that I can run on my rented space at Dreamhost to track client projects. dotProject seems nice, but I've never figured out how to create projects that only certain people can access. I'm usually working on two or three projects at a time for different clients, and would like to be able to allow access for each client to their project but not others. So, first of all, can anyone point me to how to do this in dotProject, and baring that, can anyone recommend an open-source solution to this problem?

  On November 13, 2006, Sun released much of Java as free and open source software, (FOSS), under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). On May 8, 2007, Sun finished the process, making all of Java's core code available under free software/open-source distribution terms, aside from a small portion of code to which Sun did not hold the copyright. OpenJDK (Open Java Development Kit) is a free and open source implementation of the Java programming language. It is the result of an effort Sun Microsystems began in 2006. The implementation is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) with a linking exception. Why there are still people that say Java is not open source or free as in free speech ? Am I missing something? Is Java still privative ?

• How to convince management to deal with technical debt?

  This is a question that I often ask myself when working with developers. I've worked at four companies so far, and I've noticed a lack of attention to keeping code clean and dealing with technical debt that hinders future progress in a software app. For example, the first company I worked for had written a database from scratch rather than take something like MySQL and that created hell for the team when refacoring or extending the app. I've always tried to be honest and clear with my manager when he discusses projections, but management doesn't seem interested in fixing what's already there and it's horrible to see the impact it has on team morale and in their attitude towards others. What are your thoughts on the best way to tackle this problem? What I've seen is people packing up and leaving and the company becomes a revolving door with developers coming and and out and making the code worse. How do you communicate this to management to get them interested in sorting out technical debt?

• Can SAML use saleforce login information to log into another system inside a view?

  I want my sales people, whom use salesforce every day, to be able to view orders in a ecommerce system through a dashboard view in salesforce. The ecom is built and sitting on my web server but the sales reps dont like to log into too many things in one day so they are not using what I built them. I read recently that salesforce can use SAML but it was unclear as to what you can do with it. What I'd like, is to make a new dash board view that will open up the ecom inside of salesforce. The ecom uses a login system but if it is inside of saleforce would SAML automatically log into the ecom?

• How can I move towards the Business Intelligence/ data mining fields from software developer [closed]

  I am working as a Python developer and I work with django. I also do some web scraping and building spiders and bots. Now from there I want to make my move to Business Intelligence. I just want to know how I can move into that field. Because as companies are not going to hire me in that field directly, I just want to know how can I make the transistion. I was thinking of first working as Database developer in SQL and then I can see further. But I want advice from you guys so that I can start learning that stuff so that I can change jobs keeping that in mind. Here in my area there are plenty of jobs in all areas but I need to know how to transition and what things I should learn before making that transition. Here jobs are plenty so if I know my stuff, getting a job is a piece of cake because they don't have any people. Same jobs keep getting advertised for months and months.

• Is software innovation still primarily North American and European? Why, and for how much longer?

  Since this site is read by a global audience of programmers, I want to know if people generally agree that the vast majority of software innovation - languages, OS, tools, methodologies, books, etc. - still originates from the USA, Canada, and the EU. I can think of a few exceptions, e.g. Nginx webserver from Russia and the Ruby language from Japan, but overwhelmingly, the software I use and encounter daily is from North America and the EU. Why? Is history and historical momentum (computing having started in USA and Europe) still driving the industry? And/or, is some nebulous (or real) cultural difference discouraging software innovation abroad? Or are those of us in the West simply ignorant of real software innovation going on in Asia, South America, Eastern Europe, etc.? When, if ever, might the centers of innovation move out of the West? Your experiences and opinions welcome, thanks!

• Preventing RSI (Repetitive Strain Injuries)

  I am 16 years old and I love to program and playing the piano. It's not uncommon that I'm bashing away on my mouse and keyboard all day long. I do not feel any pains doing so. Yet I am still worried, because I often hear from people that they can never type for longer then 10 minutes again without getting severe pains. Given my two hobbies, programming and playing the piano that worries me a lot.   I have seen some horrible code in my time including people virtually duplicating the code in comments // add 4 to x x+=4; // for each i in 0 to 9 for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { // multiply x by i x *= i; } Taking this concept further, I'm curious whether prose to code compilers exist. Is there a valid use case for English prose to code? Do compilers exist that do this? The distinction between this and auto generated code, is that auto generated code is generally always a subset of a project. Can we have complete projects auto generated from english prose? I realise that this might overlap with the concept of declarative languages.

• Is online freelance work viable by American standards?

  I've always been curious about trying out online freelance sites... it would be nice to work from home, feel independent, get to choose what I want to work on, get to work on different technologies, lose the PHB, etc. However I never really gave them a chance because I'm used to American rates and assumed that I would be competing with people from India, Russia, China, etc. that would severely undercut me, and it wouldn't be viable for me. • Understanding binary numbers in terms of real world objects

  When I represent a number in the decimal system, I have an intuitive knowledge of what it amounts to. For example take the number '10': I understand that it means 10 apples or 10 people... i.e I can count in the real world. But as soon as the number is converted to any other system, this understanding no longer applies. For example 10 when converted to binary will be 1010...now what does this represent? Is there a way to understand this number 1010 in terms of counting objects in the real world?

• Keystore and Credential Store interplay in OWSM - 11g

  One of the most common problems faced by customer's is the use of the keystore and it's interplay with the credential store.Here is a picture that describes these relationships.(Click on the picture for a larger image). Some of assumptions are: a) the key used for signing and encryption are the same. b) A keystore can have multiple keys and each key can have it's own alias. In the picture I show only a single key with alias "orakey". c) The keystore being described here is a JKS keystore. Things can vary slightly for other type of keystores. I hope to have a detailed How To that provides the larger picture and then shows these relationships in that context and this picture was created in the context of that How-To. • Do real developers use UML and other CASE tools?

  I'm a CS student, currently a junior, and in one of my classes this semester they have us studying all sorts of UML diagramming methods. Among others, we've touched on Petri nets, DFD diagrams, sequence diagrams, use case diagrams, collaboration diagrams, Jackson System Development diagrams, entity-relation diagrams, and more. I've worked on more than a few professional projects over the years and never encountered anyone who used these systems to any great degree (other than a general class diagram or a diagram of the tables in a database). I was just wondering if I could query the hive mind to see if this is true in your work experience too. Have you used these models at all and found them to be as important as they tell us students they are? Or is all this stuff just academic ivory-tower crap that people in the real world hardly ever touch? Which of these systems have you found to be effective and useful? Are there specific kinds of scenarios that they are more intended to be used in than what the typical software developer encounters?

  Have you noticed that a disproportionate amount of popular software products comes from the USA ? Examples: iOS, OS X, Phosothop, Oracle, Windows, Final Cut Pro, MS Office, iTunes, iWorks Suite, iLife Suite, AutoCad, Aperture, Google search engine, Twitter and endless stream of software that are the best in their fields and that are the models the rest of the industry want to emulate. Few people would deny that the most popular software comes from American companies. Obviously there's plenty of good software coming from outside the US, like Linux or SAP but most great looking, killer software comes from USA. Maybe these companies outsource the code elsewhere but the inception and design is mostly done in the USA. Why is that? and, can it be replicated elsewhere given the correct "ingredients" ?
