• Problems with Silverlight 3 Bitmaps

  As many people move to Silverlight 4, some of us that still have old projects in Silverlight 3, I havent found any solution to the below problem just yet, just a workaround for now. Still when using Visual Studio 2008 and Silverlight I receive this error on BitmapImages, something that looks like got fixed in Visual Studio 2010 and Silverlight 4, I havent tried in VS2010 and Silverlight 3. • Why is C++ predominant in programming contests and competitions?

  I understand that C++ is a very fast language, but ain't C just as fast, or faster in some cases? Then you might say that C++ has OOP, but the amount of OOP you need for most programming puzzles is not that big, and in my opinion C would be able handle that. Here's why I am asking this: I am very interested in programming contests and competitions, and I am used to coding in C on those. However, I noticed that the vast majority of people use C++ (e.g., 17 out of 25 finalists on Google Code Jam 2011 used it, while no one used C), so I am wondering if I am at a disadvantage going with C. Apart from the Object Orientation, what makes C++ a more suitable language for programming competitions? What are the features of the language I should learn and use to perform better on the competitions? For background, I consider myself pretty proficient in C, but I am just starting to learn C++.

• Do most programmers cut & paste code?

  I learned very early on that cutting & pasting somebody else's code takes longer in the long run that writing it yourself. In my opinion unless you really understand it, cut & paste code will probably have issues which will be a nightmare to resolve. Don't get me wrong, I mean finding other peoples code and learning from it is essential, but we don't just paste it into our app. We rewrite the concepts into our app. But I'm constantly hearing about people who cut & paste, and they talk about it like it's common practice. I also see comments by others which indicate it's common practice. So, do most programmers cut & paste code?

• Google analytics tracking example.com and www.example.com

  Our website is set up to direct all traffic for www.example.com to example.com with a line in the htaccess file. With google analytics new in page analytics feature we are thinking of removing the line and allowing people to visit www.example.com as well to play with the new features. My question is this. How will this change affect our analytics data. -will nothing change and we can start using the new feature with our existing data -Are the two domains tracked separately and we will have to start over with www.example .com Any help would be great, as I can find nothing on googles help site covering this. • Is SharpDX mature enough to adopt yet or should I just start using SlimDX right now?

  I'm about to stop my game-project in XNA because from what I can gather it's development is coming to an end (and it's already behind current technology). Therefore, I need to adopt a new framework or API. I have just spent 2 days looking at C++ and decided it's really not for me - however I do find the raw access to DirectX appealing. SharpDX sounds like a good place to start, but it has no documentation and no code comments. I feel like it's not quite ready for use. I'm interested in the opinions of people that have used either or both of these frameworks, to help me decide for sure which one I should learn? Thanks for any advice.

• Lending epub files for limited time to users

  I am looking for components to build a digital library who lends people epub (ebooks) for about a week. It's like a digital version of the offline old public library. Now I have found several flash (pdf) file streaming solutions. But that would require an active internet link. And like the public library, you are able to take your books to the beach or pool on holiday abroad where you have no connection. So streaming is no option. The other file restriction method I have found was DRM, but that would require a really expensive license of Adobe Content Server 4 which is not suitable for my little hobby project. But it seems that adobe content server and Adobe Digital Editions is the only option at the moment. Or are there open source alternatives?

  I will be using one of the dms (document management system) which is java + jackrabbit + postgresql + jboss + openoffice based on ubuntu server 10.04. this is the only application i will running on my server. i want to speed up the performance of the system for this. can you give me tips for improvements of ubuntu server? can i change any settings which give fast system performance. My application will be used concurrently by around 70 - 80 people. • What is the Policy for Updating grub-pc in LTS?

  After having attempted an SRU request for a small patch to grub-pc for 10.04 LTS that fixes an issue that has left many people with unbootable servers nothing has been done for some time. The patch went through d-i into Maverick and only modifies a small amount of a single *.c file over a year ago. I updated the ticket with a debdiff of the patch and rebuilt the current grub-pc package plus the patch in a PPA and changed the ticket description to be the SRU request format subscribed the "sru" and "sponsors" teams but then nothing happened. Is there some policy against updating grub-pc in LTS that I don't know about? Thanks.

• What is the need for 'discoverability' in a REST API when the clients are not advanced enough to make use of it anyway?

  The various talks I have watched and tutorials I scanned on REST seem to stress something called 'discoverability'. To my limited understanding, the term seems to mean that a client should be able to go to http://URL - and automatically get a list of things it can do. What I am having trouble understanding - is that 'software clients' are not human beings. They are just programs that do not have the intuitive knowledge to understand what exactly to do with the links provided. Only people can go to a website and make sense of the text and links presented and act on it. So what is the point of discoverability, when the client code that accesses such discoverable URLs cannot actually do anything with it, unless the human developer of the client actually experiments with the resources presented? This looks like the exact same thing as defining the set of available functions in a Documentation manual, just from a different direction and actually involving more work for the developer. Why is this second approach of pre-defining what can be done in a document external to the actual REST resources, considered inferior?

  I recently graduated from college with a B.S. in Computer Science, and am now currently attending the same college to get an M.S. in Computer Science. I know lots of things about Computer Science and programming but throughout all of my coursework I have never had to develop a single complete application, the projects were always relatively small (~300-500 lines of code). Basically, my overall I am about to have these two degrees and I feel like I don't know anything about software development or design; which doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I am looking for ways to fill in the gaps in my knowledge, I would love people's advice on these questions: 1) How do you design good software? Where do you start? 2) What makes a good software developer? Sorry for the convoluted question, but in my mind it is a convoluted situation. Thanks Edit Thanks everyone for your advice.

• Good alternative to NetLimiter?

  There is a program NetLimiter for windows. While I was using Windows it was very useful for me to find out the IP address of the person who was downloading from me, or to know IP address of any person on LAN who was using DC++ with some nick. And after that I can easily know the computer name of that person using nbtstat. I was wondering if there is any tool for Ubuntu using which I can find out the IP address of person who is downloading from me or from whom I am downloading on LAN. I am on university LAN and we are using PtokaX and DC++ for file sharing on LAN. people sometimes put some offencive stuff on open chat on DC++ using some Nick and I don't know how to trace them while I am using Ubuntu.

• Canon MP495 Scanner not working

  Running 12.04, installed and updated latest drivers for MP495 but nothing stil. latest drivers provided here: https://code.launchpad.net/~michael-gruz/+archive/canon-trunk/+packages Followed this guide to the letter: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1602839&page=11 Xsane and simple scan do not work. I have tried various other programs and have nothing... People are saying it works well with 11.10, so I don't know what the deal is with 12.04. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need this printer for my out-of-home business, and I really don't want to switch back windows just for a freaking scanner to function. Why don't these companies realise ubuntu users need to print things too?!

• why not use unmanaged safe code in c#

  There is an option in c# to execute code unchecked. It's generally not advised to do so, as managed code is much safer and it overcomes a lot of problems. However I am wondering, if you're sure your code won't cause errors, and you know how to handle memory then why (if you like fast code) follow the general advice? I am wondering this since I wrote a program for a video camera, which required some extremely fast bitmap manipulation. I made some fast graphical algorithms myself, and they work excellent on the bitmaps using unmanaged code. Now I wonder in general, if you're sure you don't have memory leaks, or risks of crashes, why not use unmanaged code more often ? PS my background: I kinda rolled into this programming world and I work alone (I do so for a few years) and so I hope this software design question isn't that strange. I don't really have other people out there like a teacher to ask such things.

• Do you know a good html mailing list management software with admin levels?

  I'm basically looking for a program/app/script (can be commercial) which I can ideally install on a windows server (we can run asp, asp.net php mssql) we have different groups of people who send newsletters to web members, I want to bring it all into one app which I can monitor and control. Ideally it would be able to create html newsletters, (with some templates) track emails and click throughs. Manage email lists subscribe/unsubscribes. And importantly have different levels of admin, so a newsletter creator could log in and create and send off an email, it goes into a queue where a communications editor can have an overview of all newsletters and approve the sending of the emails or edit them before they are sent off. before I start coding something up myself I thought I'd ask if anyone has any advice! • Remote Display Config.sh Using SSH

  How often I see people look to VNC, NXMachine, RDP, etc to get a windowing environment on a remote system.  These products are great and I use them too, but there is a fancy feature in SSH to help. ssh –X remoteserver This is a great feature for hooking into headless VirtualBox machines and remote displaying an install wizard. The remote server must have some lines put in the /etc/ssh/sshd_conf file: X11Forwarding yes X11DisplayOffset 10 The second line is optional, but the first is required.  Restart sshd (sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart). Now I can ssh –X remote server Then run /opt/app/wls10.3.4/wlserver_10.3/common/bin/config.sh to build a new domain. Note: For some reason, the jdk that comes with WebLogic often fails to work on the remote display.  In that case, I modify the config.sh to just use /usr/bin/java (from openjdk-6-jre package).

  A lot of people both internal to Oracle and customers keep asking about when should OWSM be used vs. OEG. Sometime back I posted Oracle's vision for layered SOA security Here is a quick summary: Use OWSM in Green Zone Use OEG in Red Zone (DMZ) If you need end-to-end security in which case they will want both OWSM and OEG. This is the topology I would recommend for most customers. If you need only Green Zone security - then use OWSM in conjunction with Oracle FMW products like SOA Suite, OSB, ADF, WLS, BI, etc both on the Client Side and Service Side (assuming you are using FMW technologies for both Clients and Services). If you need only Red Zone security - then use OEG on the Service Side. You can use OWSM for the Client Side if you are using FMW to build your clients.

• Name of web design technique with vertically contiguous but separate screen-sized blocks?

  I don't know the proper name for this, which makes it hard to Google it or describe this. On a site like http://p2theme.com/ as you scroll down you see that content is arranged into screen-sized chunks, each with its own chunk of content, each with a different background color, making them visually distinctive. I've seen this used more and more frequently on websites, but don't know what it's called. People have tried telling me "responsive design" or "flat UI" or "infinite scroll" or "parallax" -- but those are completely different things. What do you call this technique?

But as a full-time lurker, and long time user (only recently signed up), it kind of bums me out that I don't get to give credit where credit is due. I don't generally asks questions because I always find a related question before I get myself into the situation where I need to ask and I don't like to answer questions myself as I don't consider myself experienced enough to be contributing effectively. Hopefully the first response to this post is a quick solution to getting 15 reputation points that I haven't seen, and I can just quickly delete this useless question, or maybe a concise paragraph explaining why my question is redundant and that I should go back to my lurky shadows of which I came from.   Hi I need some experience reporting from the ones who have done pair programming,i notice that lots of people recommend that but my experience was that at one point its more efficient to set alone, think and then write code than to talk with the other programmer (which can be very annoying to other programmers in the same office), do you agree to this? and if yes can you mention situations where pair programing is less efficient than traditional programing? Actually im more interested in Cons than in Pros, but if its your own experience i would like to read both, the Cons and the Pros. • Using my own code in freelance projects.

  I have been into freelance business for more than 2 years. While doing projects for other people, I've build a compilation of common tasks that I implement in projects and put them into code. It's kind of a library with some functions that I can reuse without having to rewrite the same thing dozen times. I'm talking about accessing Access databases, downloading information from FTP and similar stuff. Is this acceptable from a legal point of view? What's the difference in reusing the old code and rewriting it from the scratch (using you own brain again, therefore the exact same logic)? I do not hold any copyright to it, of course, and provide the source code for these classes to my clients.
