• Using my own code in freelance projects.

  I have been into freelance business for more than 2 years. While doing projects for other people, I've build a compilation of common tasks that I implement in projects and put them into code. It's kind of a library with some functions that I can reuse without having to rewrite the same thing dozen times. I'm talking about accessing Access databases, downloading information from FTP and similar stuff. Is this acceptable from a legal point of view? What's the difference in reusing the old code and rewriting it from the scratch (using you own brain again, therefore the exact same logic)? I do not hold any copyright to it, of course, and provide the source code for these classes to my clients.

• Pair Programming: Pros and Cons

  Hi I need some experience reporting from the ones who have done pair programming,i notice that lots of people recommend that but my experience was that at one point its more efficient to set alone, think and then write code than to talk with the other programmer (which can be very annoying to other programmers in the same office), do you agree to this? and if yes can you mention situations where pair programing is less efficient than traditional programing? Actually im more interested in Cons than in Pros, but if its your own experience i would like to read both, the Cons and the Pros. I would like to read what you think about the Programmer who does'nt have the keyboard, what can he do in the meanwhile other than talking about the concept? or checking the code on the screen? • Should you charge clients hours spent on the wrong track?

  I took up a small CSS challenge to solve for a client and I'm going to be paid on a hourly rate. I eventually solved it, it took 4 hours but I spent roughly 30% of the time in the wrong track, trying a CSS3 solution that only worked in recent browsers and finally discovering that no fallback is possible via JS (like I originally thought). Should I charge the client that 30%? More details: I didn't provide an estimate, I liked the challenge per se, so I started working on it before giving an estimate (but I have worked with him before, so I know he's not one of those people that have unrealistic expectations). At the very worst I will have spent 4 unpaid hours on an intriguing CSS challenge. And I will give the fairest possible estimate for both of us, since I will have already done the work. :)

Specifically I'm trying to choose between: // Option 1. Create new local variable with :=, assign with = foo := 1 foo = 2 // Option 2. • Ubuntu GUI crash when LightDM enters, unable to login

  This issue happened spounteniously, i don´t know what could have cause it as i wasn´t using the PC when it happened. I ruled out any messing around with the setting as the user doesn´t know how to enter the BIOS, doesn´t have the sudo password and was only using firefox and libreoffice when it happened. The issue persist after rebooting. I choose the other options to see if anything happens, i either get back to option 1 or doesn´t show anything anormal. (I have pictures i someone wants to know) What i found weird is that event though the error is possitioned in the chip, however ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04 run fine in a live CD I saw that some people are having issues when LightDM has a non default wallpaper, but i use a default one. • How to use American English spelling dictionary in Firefox?

  My Firefox spellchecker was complaining this morning that I spelled 'neighbor' in the American English style, not the British English style ('neighbour'). Same is true for color (colour), analyze (analyse), etc. I've checked in the edit-preferences-content-language tab, and en-us is selected. I also found this link here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1013043 Suggesting that there's some kind of system panel I can use to ensure that I've got the right language, but I can't see where that is (I guess that's for an older Ubuntu that let people get to system settings). So either the dictionary for Firefox for en-us is corrupted, just a copy of the British English dictionary, or somehow the setting isn't propagated properly. How can I get the American dictionary back?

  This past Saturday, I presented "Performance Tuning with Traces" at SQL Saturday #47 in Phoenix, Arizona.  You can download my slide deck and supporting files here. This is the same presentation that I did in September at SQL Saturday #55 in San Diego, however I focused less on my custom server-side trace tool and more on the steps that I take to troubleshoot a production performance problem which often includes server-side tracing.  If any of my blog readers attended the presentation, I'd love to hear your feedback.  I'm specifically interested in hearing constructive criticism.  Speaking in front of people is not something that comes naturally to me.  I plan on presenting in the future, so feedback on how I can do a better job would be very helpful.  My number one problem is I talk too fast!

• Is it normal for a company to have programmers on such a rigid schedule?

  So I've been working at this job for a couple of months. I'm a little frustrated because I do my best work from 2 to 7. In previous jobs, I've come in at 9:30-10:00 and leave at 7. Some companies have been okay with this, others have not. But my current company insists on my being there at 8:30. Any deviation from this is a big deal. Is this typical? I have colleagues who are more 9:30 to 6:30, 10:00-7:00 guys...but maybe that is just startup culture? I don't see why, given that I don't meet clients, etc. what the advantage to having things be so rigid could be. I also don't see why if there is 15 to 20 minute variation sometimes in coming in, why people don't just assume that I will adjust when I leave... Are these unreasonable expectations as a developer or am I missing something?

  I found a tutorial with people saying it works; here are the instructions I followed. I opened a shell as root on my system and launched the following: wget http://linuxtv.org/hg/v4l-dvb/archive/tip.tar.gz tar zxvf tip.tar.gz cd v4l... (whatever the newly created directory name is) make all sudo make install Then I edited /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-custom and added blacklist sn9c102. After reboot, I launched sudo gstreamer-properties. However when I type tar zxvf tip.tar.gz it displays: tar: You may not specify more than one `-Acdtrux' or `--test-label' option Try `tar --help' or `tar --usage' for more information. Why? How can I do this? Thanks in advance.

• Maximum number of controllers Unity3D can handle

  I've been trying to find out the maximum amount of xbox controller Unity3D can handle on one editor. I know through networking, Unity is capable of having as many people as your hardware can handle. But I want to avoid networking as much as possible. Thus, on a single computer, and in a single screen (think Bomberman and Super Smash Brothers) how many xbox controllers can Unity3D support? I have done work in XNA and remember that only being capable of support 4, but for the life of me, I can't find any information that tells me how many Unity can support.

• Would you make your website's source code public?

  Back story: My best friend is a self-taught coder for a community art site, written in PHP. Some time ago he mentioned he wanted to make the source code of the site public, to which my response was total horror - surely it was going to be full of security holes waiting to be found, and it was going to lead to hacking and errors on a huge scale. He never ended up doing it. Current story: I'm starting development of a community website built in Rails, and for ease of use I was going to use Github for version control. Then I realized it was pretty much exactly the same thing as my friend making his source code public - which made me stop and think. Would you make your website's completely-custom source code public? Or is this a case of open source gone too far? (note: I don't think this applies to people who run things like Wordpress. Or does it?)

• HP Pavilion g6 1190sm laptop has overheat/hibernation/graphics issues

  Every time I reboot or shutdown my laptop, while the laptop is booting again I get a screen (before loading the OS) that HP discovered overheating and system went into hibernation. But the point is that the laptop is not overheating nor going into hibernation by itself. Also, because of the hybrid graphics card I cannot install additional drivers. Desktop resolution and all works perfectly but I cannot use Unity 3D. Also, OpenGL doesn't work as it should (with Cairo Dock). As I've read some posts, people say that vgaswitcheroo doesn't work on 12.04 so I haven't tried it.

• Will we ever lose the human touch?

  I was at a conference two weeks ago, which was targeted to sales and marketing professionals. The discussions around the changing scenario in sales was very interesting. More and more of selling is moving to the internet- sales people are delivering more of their presentations online, or via the phone. Budget constraints and new technologies have dramatically decreased the need for face-to-face interactions. At the same time, customers are also researching for products on their own, taking the advice of peers, making up their mind, and then contacting the vendor. That takes care of more than half of the usual selling process. But humans are social animals, and because of that I believe that despite these changing trends and technologies, the need to maintain the human touch will always be necessary. One of the presenters at the conference shared this video, which stayed in my mind.

• I'm using a shared server, and as such Gmail marks my email as spam (all from headers are different from the same IP)

  I have a shared server, meaning many people share the same IP. When I send an email, the @website.com is different from someone else that shares the same IP with me, therefore Gmail marks it as spam. For example: My website's IP is 1.2.3.4. My website is mywebsite.com Person 2's website's IP is hosted by the same host, and as such their IP is 1.2.3.4 Person 2's website is person2.com. When they send an email, it gets sent from [email protected] When I send an email, it gets sent from [email protected] According to Gmail's spam thing: "Use the same address in the 'From:' header on every bulk mail you send." Again, the only similarities between our websites is the IP. However, this causes Gmail to mark both our mail as spam. Is there a way to sort this out with Gmail?

  I am beginner in developing test cases, and want to follow good patterns for developing test cases rather than following some person or company's specific ideas. Some people don't make test cases and just develop the way their senior have done in their projects. I am facing lot problems like object dependencies (when want to test method which persist A object i have to first persist B object since A is child of B). Please suggest some good books or sites preferably for learning design pattern for unit test cases. Or reference to some good source code or some discussion for Dos and Donts will do wonder.
