  • What might cause the Save and Open dialog windows to just not work?

    In several applications, the Save and Load dialog windows are just not showing. And in notepad (which obviously handles the return code) is reporting an out of memory issue, which I'm sure is not the case; I think it's assuming it's out of memory as it can't get the window handle. In any case, there's something definitely wrong with Windows, but there's nothing in the event log. Any idea why this might happen?

  • Javascript on a desktop wallpaper (XP)

    I have a desktop wallpaper shipped out by my domain, it's a HTML wallpaper that displays information like today's date, etc. It also has the internet usage rules. Using jquery I've made it so that the rules are hidden and displayed when you click on the section heading. The JS runs fine and it hides the rules, but it appears that once the desktop "loses focus" the javascript stops and clicking the headings does nothing. Anyone know a way to keep javascript running?

  • How can I scan from Canon PIXMA MX700 without disabling OS X firewall?

    I have a Canon PIXMA MX700 connected by ethernet. When I first bought it I was using OS X 10.4, and scanner-initiated scanning worked fine. After upgrading to 10.6, neither scanner-initiated or scanning from MP Navigator EX works with the firewall enabled. The firewall lists exceptions for three applications: Canon IJ Network Scan Utility.app Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector.app MP Navigator EX 1.0.app I get no further blocked warnings, and /var/log/appfirewall.log lists nothing for today (my latest attempt to use it).

  • vmware problems - networking - no packet response

    XP is my host. Ubuntu is my Guest in VMware. When I do the following commands, I should get SMTP respones but now get no response. I use wireshark to analayze it.   • What would cause the Graphic Equalizer in Windows Media Player 10 to be disabled/not available?

    On XP, Windows Media Player 10 contains a Graphic Equalizer but I can't find any way to activate it. Could this be a codec issue or a hardware issue? I'm also not getting any sound at all from this computer but there are no apparent hardware device issues marked in Device Manager, nothing is muted, all volume levels are turned fully up (Windows Media Player and the Windows Volume Controller). Stumped!

  • Why would my 15" MacBook Pro suddenly ask me to Hard Quit while I was in a browser?

    I was in Firefox looking at a search I had performed in eBay and all of a sudden, the screen grayed out starting from the top down. In the middle of the screen was a box with about 5 different languages saying I had to hard quit my computer. I tried other keys on my computer and nothing was working so I hard quit and restarted.   • Cannot send or receive files over Bluetooth

    I have a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop and running Windows Vista. Previously I could send and receive files between my phone and my laptop but now it won't work. Every time I select a file, right-click and select "Send to", and select "Bluetooth devices", the box appears but there's nothing there. Even if I turn my laptop's Bluetooth on, my phone can't find it and vice versa. What could be the problem and how can I fix this?

    i created a .bat script to perform daily folder compression. it is working fine when i double click the .bat file. However, it doesnt work when i include it in window scheduler.     72 ppi is nothing. And we have been stuck with this for 20 years. Why do we need to resort to stupid tech like anti-aliasing instead of resolving the core of the issue, more pixels per inch!!! It is really surprising considering all the progress cpu's, video cards, etc. have made.

  • How to perform "tracert" like operation from browser?

    I'm remotely investigating issue with my friend's WIN XP computer. The browsers (Chrome and IE) won't show any pages but message with err_connection_reset in details. I've tried to perform "telnet google.com 80" and send there "HEAD / HTTP/1.0" from console and everything went fine, but browsers refused to give me anything. I've checked for presence of firewalls and proxy servers in the settings, but nothing seems to be there. What else to check?

  • Apache returning text/html on some png files

    I have an Apache web server that has a sub folder for images. For some reason, a few of the .png files are returned as text/html and not as image/png. There is nothing indicating a permission problem and the files return with code 200 and with full size. I made sure that image/png is set and even tried forcing it with .htaccess Any idea where to look next? Edit: looks like an .htaccess configuration problem on a parent directory.

    Hi, I am trying to install TeamCity but it was stopped by the malware that keep generating ns??(??=random digit).tmp file. I found that out because the setup process stay still. But when ever I kill the process of the ns??.tmp file, the process continues. I found on google that the ns??.tmp was actually caused by a malware called zlob and I used both Symantec and MS securities essential to scan the whole machine, but nothing was found by that. Anyone have any suggestion?

  • Word in office 2007 and Windows 7 ultimate cant navigate to folders

    In word 2007 I click office button top left I click open, I get the open box, in the top address bar, I if I click on the down arrow far right (previous Locations) the drop down menu is empty just a box with nothing in it. To go anywhere from here I have to navigate via the left had pane, on all other windows systems this dropdown has enabled me to go to any location on my computer. I'm wondering if because all my word documents are on my D drive that windows 7 doesn't like it.

    I'm rather new with Windows / Windows server administration. I heard that rebooting Windows servers everyweek is required to keep it functioning well. So here, we reboot every Virtual Machine running Windows everyday at a specified time, automatically. Coming from a Unix background, I find that rather surprising.   • Trying to install an old program on Windows XP and getting an error message

    Hello I'm trying to install an older application named headline.exe. I'm getting an error message saying the the program has to end and asking if I want to notify Microsoft. The event logs says "Faulting application _untitled.exe version 1.0.0.1591, faulting module flash6.ocx, version 6.0.88.0, fault address blah blah blah. I uninstalled flash and installed version 6 of Flash and nothing changed. Any thoughts? Thanks
