• Best way to move a bunch of SQL Server 2005 tables to another Server?

  I've been looking for a way to move a bunch of tables, more than 40, to another server with all the data in them. I've looked around for scripts to generate inserts but so far I'd have to run them once for every table, then copy all the scripts over and then run them on the server. Seems like there is a better way. --Update-- My strategy for doing this may have been for naught. The end script, using MS SQL Server Publishing Wizard and Red Gates SQL Data Compare (excellent tool, btw) results in a file over 1GB. This makes my system plead for mercy and I'm not willing to risk crashing a clients server just opening the file to run it. I may have to rethink this whole thing and break down to just individual per table scripts. I'm not looking forward to that.

• Core Data No Longer Updating Sqlite Schema

  I am using core data for my app and I never had any problems adding or removing columns until recently. But now even if I make changes to my xcdatamodel and generate new and updated entity h/m files, sqlite doesn't seem to be picking up the changes. I actually went over to the documents folder and inspected the create statement for the relevant tables in sqlite3 and I was able to confirm that the columns I added were missing. I removed and redeployed the app several times to no avail. Is it possible to do something to the app to make it disregard any schema changes being made through xcdatamodel? I guess another thing I should mention is I recently started putting my entire projects folder in CVS so I wonder if something got messed up in the checkin and check out process.

The project is composed by: resources and configuration files (VS project files, like: .settings .vbproj .myapp .config .xconfig .Designer.vb); a lot of VB codes; xsc, xsd, xss and xsx files; a lot of Crystal reports for VS2005; graphical resources. The application take data in order to generate reports from more DB SQL Server 2005 istances. What is the best way to approach to a migration activity? Is there an internal migration tool? If yes, what's the best practice to use it? Which kind of files will be automatically ported to the new VS version? Thanks in advance for all the provided information

• T-SQL - Is there a (free) way to compare data in two tables?

  Okay so i have table a and table b. (SQL Server 2008) Both tables have the exact same schema. For the purposes of this question, consider table a = my local dev table, table b = the live table. I need to create a SQL script (containing UPDATE/DELETE/INSERT statements) that will update table b to be the same as table a. This script will then be deployed to the live database. Any free tools out there that can do this, or better yet a way i can do it myself? I'm thinking i probably need to do some type of a join on all the fields in the tables, then generate dynamic sql based on that. Anyone have any ideas?

• why is link generated in YUI javascript failing to render in rails?

  Using YAHOO.widget.treeview to generate a table with three levels of data: module, submodule, and detail. If there is an image associated with a detail row the javascript generates a link: "<td><a href=\"/screenshot/show/" + rowData.id + "\">Screenshot</a></td>" that is appended to the html for the row. The url is generated correctly and the link appears. When clicked nothing happens except the word 'Done' appears in the browser status bar. Am calling the very same url from another page that does not use javascript and the screenshot page appears as expected.   I have the following tables below City --------- CityID StateID Name Description Reports --------- ReportID HeaderID FooterID Description I’m trying to generate a grid for use in a .Net control (Gridview, Listview…separate issue about which will be the ‘best’ one to use for my purposes) which will assign the reports as the columns and the cities as the rows. Which cities get displayed is based on the state selected, and is easy enough SELECT * FROM CITIES WHERE STATEID=@StateID However, the user is able to select which reports are being generated for each City (Demographics, Sales, Land Area, etc.). Further, the resultant cells (City * Report) is a sub-query on different tables based on the city selected and the report. Ie. Column Sales selected yields SELECT * FROM SALES WHERE CITYID=@CityID I’ve programmed a VERY inelegant solution using multiple queries and brute-forcing the grid to be created (line by line, row by row creation of data elements), but I’m positive there’s got to be a better way of accomplishing this…? Any / all suggestions appreciated here as the brute force approach I’ve gotten is slow and cumbersome…and this will have to be used often by the client, so I’m not sure it’ll be acceptable in it’s current implementation.

  in C++ Primer 4th edition 2.1.1, it says "when assigning an out-of-range value to a signed type, it is up to the compiler to decide what value to assign". I can't understand it. I mean, if you have code like "char 5 = 299", certainly the compiler will generate asm code like "mov BYTE PTR _sc$[ebp], 43"(VC) or "movb $43, -2(%ebp)"(gcc+mingw), it IS decided by the compiler. but what if we assign a value that is given by the user input? like, via command line? and the asm code generated will be "movb %al, -1(%ebp)"(gcc+mingw) and " mov cl, BYTE PTR _i$[ebp] mov BYTE PTR _sc$[ebp], cl "(VC), so now how can compiler decide what will happen? I think now it is decided by the CPU. Can you give me a clear explanation?

• Widget_Controller for different types of data (MVC)

  Hello, I have a few widgets I need to show on a site - they are all relating to different types of data (e.g user, house). Each type of data and its relations is represented in specific models, but as far as a controller or helper is concerned, is it an ok plan to have a generic Widget controller/helper which generates the necessary widgets, even though each widget is dealing with distinct data? I don't really want to generate these widgets within the User and House controllers, as these controllers are dealing with different types of functionality. I'd imagine that the Widget_Controller could just contain static methods for generating these widgets, e.g: Widget_Controller::user_panel(); Does that make sense? Cheers!

• Shorter GUIDs than hashing a user id?

  I'm wondering how Instapaper (bookmarklet that saves text) might generate URLs for their bookmarklet. Mine has a script src of something similar to www.instapaper.com/j/AnJHrfoDTRia The quality of these URLs is that they need to never collide, and not be really guessable (so other people can't save to your account). I know a simple approach might be to MD5 their email address (presumed to have been checked on signup for uniqueness), but then I'd end up with a super long string. This isn't a huge issue, but I'm wondering what techniques there are for shorter GUIDs that won't collide too often (this is obviously the tradeoff, but 12 characters above is pretty short in my opinion)

  Hello everyone, I am using SQL Server 2008 Enterprise with VSTS 2008, and I am developing a simple web application using ASP.Net and Forms Authentication. When I am using the configuration tool/menu of VSTS of my ASP.Net project (I want to use this tool to manually add some Forms authentication users), I met with the following error (SqlException), Trying to attach file D:\Projects\MyTest\App_Data\aspnetdb.mdf to automatically named database failed. It may be caused by existing the same name database, or may be caused by specified file can not be opened or caused by the specified file exists in UNC share. In my computer, there is no aspnetdb.mdf under dir D:\Projects\MyTest\App_Data, and I have used aspnet_regsql to generate database successfully before I run the configuration tool. Why there is such error? How to fix it? thanks in advance, George

• Why maven is not working in eclipse indigo?

  I'm trying to make a simple log in/ log out web application with maven and I'm creating the project with the command: " mvn archetype:generate " and choose 341 and it'll be created with the structure below: webapp -----src/main/java -----Referenced Libraries -----Maven Dependencies -----src -----target pom.xml But when I add some dependencies and update the project something weird happening with the structure of the project according to the picture below: webapp -----src/main/java -----Referenced Libraries -----JRE System Library -----src -----target pom.xml and it's not working any more. As you can see the the first one has a Maven dependencies Library but the second one has been changed to JRE System Library. I use mac os lion and eclipse indigo. Anyone how knows why is like that? • Errors when using a Ruby On Rails scaffold with a data type of interger

  I am learning Ruby On Rails. I am on a shared hosting with Ruby version 1.8.1 and Rails version 2.3.10. I am working my way through a tutorial at http://railstutorial.org/chapters/a-demo-app?version=2.3#top and at one point in the tutorial it has me run: script/generate scaffold Micropost content:string user_id:interger The tutorial is using the default database, SQLite3. The command works and I use rake db:migrate to create the database. I can view the page listing the microposts (which is empty), but when I try to add a micropost (microposts/new) I get an error undefined method `user_id' for #<Micropost:0x7f710e4988e8> After doing some testing on my own it seems I experience the problem by using the data type of interger. While I understand that using a scaffold is not the best way of building a ruby on rails, I'm just beginning and would still like to know why I am experiencing this problem to help me better understand how rails works.

• How can I load an MP3 or similar music file for display and anaysis in wxWdigets?

  I'm developing a GUI in wxPython which allows a user to generate sequences of colours for some toys I'm building. Part of the program needs to load an MP3 (and potentially other formats further down the line) and display it to the user. That shuold be sufficient to get started but later I'd like to add features like identifying beats and some crude frequency analysis. Is there any simple way of loading / understanding an MP3's contents to display a plot of it's amplitudes to the screen using wxWidgets? I later intend to port to C++/wxWidgets for speed and to avoid having to distribute wxPython.

• Why Hibernates ignores the name attribute of the @Column annotation?

  Using Hibernate 3.3.1 and Hibernate Annotations 3.4, the database is DB2/400 V6R1, running that on WebSphere 7.0.0.9 I have the following class @Entity public class Ciinvhd implements Serializable { @Id private String ihinse; @Id @Column(name="IHINV#") private BigDecimal ihinv; .... } For reasons I can't figure, Hibernate ignores the specified column name and uses 'ihinv' to generate the SQL: select ciinvhd0_.ihinse as ihinse13_, ciinvhd0_.ihinv as ihinv13_, ... Which of course gives me the following error: Column IHINV not in table CIINVHD Did anyone had this problem before? I have other entities that are very alike in the way that they are using # in their database field names and that are part of the PK and I don't have this problem with them.

• What algorithm would you use to code a parrot?

  A parrot learns the most commonly uttered words and phrases in its vicinity so it can repeat them at inappropriate moments. So how would you create a software version? Assuming it has access to a microphone and can record sound at will, how would you code it without requiring infinite resources? The best I can imagine is to divide the stream using silences in the sound, and then use some pattern recognition to encode each one as a list of tokens, storing new ones as you meet them. Hashing the token sequences and counting occurrences in a database, you could build up a picture of the most frequently uttered phrases. But given the huge variety in phrases, how do you prevent this just becoming a huge list? And the sheer number of pairs to match would surely generate lot of false positives from the combinatorial nature of matching. Would you use a neural net, since that's how a real parrot manages it? Or is there another, cleverer way of matching large-scale patterns in analogue data?

  Last night I came up to sometihng intersting while designing my new project that brought me to ask this qustion here. My project is supposed to follow Table Gateway pattern using tradional ADO.Net datasets for data access. I don't want to write plain queries in my data-access classes. So I came up with an idea of writing a parser kindaa api that exposes objects and methods to generate queries on the move based on my domain objects. Later I want this api to hook up to my Business objects and provide Typed SQL generator api right on the business object instances. Any idea or references how can I do this ? This seems very wide to start with that I'm compelled take your opinions here. Does there anything already exists that can do this ?

  Hi! I'm using winforms. I spend a lot of time drawing forms (maybe not a lot, but it is a boring task). To sum up... I want to develop a simple aplication that connect to a sql server database, let the user to select a table, and put the controls in a form for me (generate the designer code), based on the tipe of each column. Then my app will name each control like the column of the table, set the maxlengh property (if the type is varchar), and create a label with the same text near the control. If the column is a FK, then the app will draw a combobox and so on. I saw that Telerik Open ORM make something like this, but I only need a simple app for the IU Generation. If the same day I finish my little application I discover a tool that make the same... I will feel myself stupid :D Are there any tool out there that do this work for me? Thanks

  I generate 2 instances in this way: gameManager manager1 = new CTManager(owner,players1,"en"); manager1.start(); gameManager manager2 = new CTManager(owner,players2,"en"); manager2.start(); The start() method of the gameManager looks like that: void start() { game.start(); } When I create the game instance I create a loger: log = Logger.getLogger("TestLog"); (log is a public field of the class in which the game belongs). In the game.start() I run many processes and give them a reference to the corresponding log. So, I expect that manager1 and manager2 will write to different files. But manager2 writes to its own file and to the log file of the manager1. Why can it happen?

• Syncing JS+PHP time

  Since the Date constructor is based on your PC's timezone and server-side is obviously dependent on the server's time settings... What procedures can I do to ensure that the timestamps I generate are consistent on both ends? I have a jQuery datepicker setup and I do a lot of work, I also have my own datepicker that's generated from server-side code which looks up db availability for bookings. I'm saving arrival/departure times on the server-side and the days are off by one because the JS is local timezone ( mine is Eastern ) . Is my only option doing something like making the JS call PHP to grab a timestamp?

In theory you only have to pass the movie path to the htmlFlash helper in a phtml view: echo $this-htmlFlash('/path/to/myMovie.swf'); And the framework will generate the html code in the html page: <object data="/path/to/flash.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab"> </object> However, I have done so and the code doesn't appear on the source code. Has anyone had this problem? Thank you
