• In OCaml, how can I create an out_channel which writes to a string/buffer instead of a file on disk

  I have a function of type in_channel -> out_channel -> unit which will output something to an out_channel. Now I'd like to get its output as a string. Creating temporary files to write and read it back seems ugly, so how can I do that? Is there any other methods to create out_channel besides Pervasives.open_out family? Actually, this function implemented a repl. What I really need is to test it programmatically, so I'd like to first wrap it to a function of type string -> string. For creating the in_channel, it seems I can use Scanf.Scanning.from_string, but I don't know how to create the out_channel parameter.

• Does table columns increase select statement execution time

  I have 2 tables, same structure, same rows, same data but the first has more columns (fields). For example: I select the same 3 fields from both of them (SELECT a,b,c FROM mytable1 and then SELECT a,b,c FROM mytable2) I've tried to run those queries on 100,000 records (for each table) but at the end I got the same execution time (0.0006 sec) Do you know if the number of the columns (and in the end the size of the one table is bigger than the other) has to do something with the query execution time?

  I am using a function that returns a char*, and right now I am getting the compiler warning "returning address of local variable or temporary", so I guess I will have to use a static var for the return, my question is can I make something like if(var already set) return var else do function and return var? And should I use ZeroMemory(&buf, 20*sizeof(char))? I removed it because if I use it above the if(strlen...) my TCHAR length is never 0, should I use it below?

• Perl: getting handle for stdin to be used in cgi-bin script

  Using perl 5.8.8 on windows server I am writing a perl cgi script using Archive::Zip with to create on fly a zip that must be download by users: no issues on that side. The zip is managed in memory, no physical file is written to disk using temporary files or whatever. I am wondering how to allow zip downloading writing the stream to the browser. What I have done is something like: binmode (STDOUT); $zip->writeToFileHandle(*STDOUT, 0); but i feel insecure about this way to get the STDOUT as file handle. Is it correct and robust? There is a better way? Many thanks for your advices

  Is there a HTTP status code to tell Google (and others) to go away, index me again later? Basically, one that semantically tells clients that the site is down for maintenance? The ones I have considered are 304 => Not modified 307 => Temporary redirect 410 => Gone 503 => Service Unavailable I'm leaning towards the last one, but was just curious as to which one was proper choice. • ODBC: when is the best time to create my database?

  I have a windows program which generates PGP forms which will be filled in later. Those PHP forms will populate a database. It looks very much like MySql, but I can't be certain, so let's call it ODBC. And, yes, it does have to be a windows program. There will also be PHP forms which query the database - examine which tables and fields it contains and then generates forms which can be used to search the database (e.g, it finds a table with fields "employee_name", etc and generates a form which lets you search based on employee name. Let's call that design time and run time. At design time, some manager or IT guy or similar gets to define the nature of the database and at runtime 1) a worker fills in the form daily and 2) management can extract reports. Here's my question: given that the database is defined at "design time" (and populated at run time), where and how is best to do so? 1 I could use an ODBC interface from the windows program, but I am having difficulty finding something good to work with Delphi. Things like ADO and firebird tend to expect you to already have a database and allow you to manipulate it, but I can find no code example of how to create a database and some tables, so ... 2 I could used DOS commands from Delphi in my windows program. I just tried and got a response to MySql --version, but am not sure if MySql etc are more interactive. That is, can I use a script file or a very long stacked command with semicolons and returns separating? e.g 'CREATE DATABASE db; CREATE TABLE t1;' 3) Since the best way to work with databases seems to be PHP, perhaps my windows program could spit out a PHP page which would, when run in a browser, create the database. I have tried to make this as uncomplicated as I can, but please feel free to ask questions. It may be that there are several valid ways, but there is probably one 'better' solution in terms of ease of implementation or maintenance. Better scratch option 3. What if the user later wants to come back and have the windows program change the input form? It needs to update the database too.

I'm getting an error saying Incorrect key file for table '/var/tmp/#sql_201e_0.MYI'; try to repair it but the storage engine I'm using (whatever the default is, I guess?) doesn't support repairing tables. how do I fix this so I can run the query?

• CF Client Variables: is the CDATA - CGLOBAL relationship always 1:1?

  Hi We've noticed something odd with our Coldfusion 8 client variables DB. We have many more (about 3 times as many) CGlobal entries as we have CData entries. I would have assumed that the relationship would be 1:1 on the cfid column. Has any one else noticed this before? I have ruled out old data, my sample is less than 3 hours old.   I have two similar sites: - two of them have almost exactly the same codes, and running on the same server - both sites are the same, they just use different language. - database of the slower site is populated (maybe only the user table) the other tables for site content is the same - the faster uses root to access database one of the sites is not released yet, so it uses IP Address to access the site instead of domain name the site that is using IP address is faster (lot faster) the site that is using domain name is slower do you know why is this happening what could be the reason?

  I have a number of projects running on a Hudson slave. I'd like one of them to run Ant under Java6, rather than the default (which is Java5 in my environment). In the project configuration view, I was hoping to find either: An explicit option allowing me to set a custom JDK location to use for this project. A way to set custom environment variables for this project, which would allow me to set JAVA_HOME to the JDK6 location. The would make Ant pick up and run on Java6 as desired. Is there a way to do either of the above? If one of those facilities is available, I can't see how to access it. I'm running on Hudson 1.285. I would rather avoid using an "execute shell" operation instead of the "invoke Ant" operation if possible: my slave is on z/OS and Hudson doesn't seem to create the temporary shell scripts properly on this platform (probably an encoding issue).

• Using stored procedures to generate RDLC report in C#

  I'm making an application that generates reports for my client. I'm using his database that contains stored procedures which return the data needed for the reports. The problem is that I don't know how to execute them from the application (more specific the TableAdapter in my dataset). When I use the visual aid to create the TableAdapter, it shows the error "Invalid object named #table1". This is weird because there is a temporary table called #table1 in the stored procedure. When I try to do the whole job programmatically, I get the exception Incorrect syntax near '.'. An object or column name is missing or empty. For SELECT INTO statements, verify each column has a name. For other statements, look for empty alias names. Aliases defined as "" or [] are not allowed. Change the alias to a valid name. I created a DataTable that has identical structure as the result of the stored procedure, but I still get the same exception
