  • Outlook Notes replacement or alternatives?

    I save my notes in Outlook notes. However it's just a list of notes without any kind of categorization. I am looking for a replacement software where I can define my categories and I can place a note in one the categories. Plus the ability to search text across all the notes. I prefer an Outlook plugin but a small quick launch app will do.

  • Is it possible to install custom software on Amazon EC2

    I'm trudging through the Amazon docs for a quick answer, but while I'm looking I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask here. My client uses custom software that uses (wait for it) Microsoft Excel to store data as opposed a RDBMS. Either way, their server is outdated and they are interested in using Amazon's cloud services, but would installing this software be possible, or am I barking up the wrong tree? Links are welcome!   • Puppet Exec fails executing useradd

    From what I understand, puppetd runs as root. As root, I launch puppetd --onetime --no-daemonize --verbose So I don't understand why this doesn't work: exec { "useradd -m testuser": path => "/bin:/usr/bin", } I just get: ...Exec[useradd -m testuser]/returns: change from notrun to 0 failed:useradd -m testuser returned 1 instead of one of [0] at... If I execute the command directly, it works just fine. Any ideas?

I intend to install VS2008 in the VM and use it in Virtualbox when doing quick work and on native hardware when doing a lot of work. I don't want to mess up my actual Win7 installation with VS2008 dev work.

    Hi guys, Is there a quick way to give the local administrator full rights to all folders on the C drive? I am having really hard time with that, I try to give it full rights to some folders (user profiles) but I can't even modify the NTFS permissions in some cases, I get "permission denied" Is there some soft of tutorial or script that will just give the administrator full rights on all folders in the C driver?     I'm getting the following error when I launch :FuzzyFinderTextmate in vim: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/533753/Screen%20shot%202010-04-27%20at%2011.14.45%20AM.png It's loading the ruby file fine (from /.vim/ruby/fuzzy_file_finder.rb) And the original FuzzyFinder plugin works fine. I can't figure this one out, I've reinstalled everything twice. I'm using Mac Vim.

    When I start Apple QuickTime (regular non-pro version), it comes up with this page of content including "Hot Picks", "Quick Hits" and other advertising, which I assume it is getting from the internet. How do I turn this off? I just want it to open the blank player, ready for me to play a file etc and not connect to the internet.

  • Duplicate mails in unread mail view of Windows Live Mail

    When I get new mail and go to the "unread email" quick view I always see two version of the email, even though I definitely have only one such version in the inbox itself. Further, viewing the message via inbox usually marks only one of these copies as read, or sometimes none at all. I have no custom filters defined that could cause duplication. Any idea what's going on? PS This is the new version (2011).

    How do you break free of a fullscreen app on MacOS X? There are some, mostly games, that when they become unresponsive won't allow you to switch to another app with Command-Tab, and I know no other way to close that app or get away from it. Command-W or Command-Q won't work either. Is there a shortcut to launch Activity Monitor, or Terminal, to kill the application?

    Can you burn a DVD film that will play on a standard DVD player but also include on the disk some pc readable files that would auto launch on a PC? I want to create a dvd disk that essentailly has 2 purposes: When a DVD is inserted into a standard DVD player it plays like a normal DVD film, i.e. you get the DVD menu and you can play the movie When you insert the dvd into a pc it auto launches an exe file and behaves like a normal data disk.

    I recently bought a wireless DSL router to replace my wired one. After quick setup however, the router does not connect to the Internet. Wireless connection between laptop and router exists and Internet can be connected through laptop(manually) by using router as WAN miniport(PPPoE). What I want to do is connect the wireless router to Internet so that when laptop connects to router, I can start using the Internet. How do I do this? Please help.

    Hello. I just restarted my Windows 7 PC to find all my pinned shortcuts have disappeared from the start menu and taskbar. I've looked here "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned" And it seems the shortcuts are still there. Is there maybe a service that isn't running, which is causing this problem? Thanks.

  • Do these 3 crashes have something in common?

    I'm running OS X 10.6.8 on a Mac Mini. I tried to install 3 applications today and all 3 installations failed. I am wondering if the failures have something in common. First I installed GraphViz. The installation succeeded, but when I try to open any .dot file, I get a dialog that says GraphViz has quit unexpectedly. Next I installed Doxygen. It installed, but when I try to launch it I get a dialog that tells me Doxywizard quit unexpectedly. After some googling I thought perhaps my system lacked QT, and that was the problem. I downloaded the Qt 4.8.4 packages and installed them. But when I try to launch qtdemo.app, or any of the other apps that came with the qt installation, I get a dialog that says I can't open the app because it's not supported on this type of Mac. I have crash logs from GraphViz and Doxygen. They're long and I think it unnecessary to post them unless they would help someone determine my problem.   • How can I use the "Windows Live Call Button" on my headphone to answer a call with Skype?

    Webcams and headphones from Microsoft (like for example the LifeChat ZX-6000, in my case) have a button which can be used only with Windows Live Messenger, to answer a call. There is no option provided to configure it so that it would launch a program, or work in another communicator, in the given drivers. Is there a way to make it work with Skype, so that I can answer a call by pressing this button? Maybe there are other drivers?

The real issue is that for replication i need to use the private ip's of the instances. However, these ip's are always dynamic and will change on server launch.   • Change Logon DPI setting in Windows 8.1

    I love how M$ keeps making decisions for me about how I want my desktop to look. Now they have added per-user dpi settings. The problem this has created is that there is no adjustable dpi setting for the Lock/Logon screen. Let me explain. you can change the dpi setting to be the same across all displays and this does affect the icons and font on the lock/logon screen. However it does not affect any app/program that can run on the lock/logon screen. Ex. I use a 44" flat screen tv for my monitor on my desktop. Big enough for me to sit in my recliner and use my comp. But I don't have a wireless keyboard. And it sucks having the wire from the keyboard running across the floor. Plus I really don't want to keep a keyboard next to me. So I use the on screen keyboard for logging in and quick typing (search, web address, etc.) So the problem is that with the new dpi setup my on screen keyboard takes up nearly half the screen. Does M$ think we are all blind? Oh no I remember they think desktops should look like tablets and phones. I tried looking through the registry to see if I could find a setting for it. In the key HKEY_USERS.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop there is a string value named "LogicalDPIOverride" with a value of -1. I have a feeling this is where I can fix the issue. I tried changing the value to 0 and to 1 with no change in the result. Instead I noticed that after logging out and back in the -1 value was back in the registry. So now M$ has also added a way for us to not be able to change a setting in the registry. They are making it harder and harder for us power users to be able to do anything with the settings in windows. Soon we will all have the same exact Windows with absolutely no customization. ok sorry for the quick rant. The real question here is. How can I change this defualt dpi crap? Can I use the LogPixels string that worked for dpi in Windows 7? I am converting one by one using notepad++ but I was wondering if there is any application that will convert them all (I have many files) in a quick and easy way.
