• Installing 2 DDR3 Sticks in MB with 4 Slots

  Hey everyone, I just put together my first system that uses DDR3 memory. The motherboard I got is an ASUS M4A77T/USB3 and it has 4 DDR3 RAM slots. Looking in the manual for the MB it doesn't say anything about how to install the RAM as far as matching the pairs goes. I have 2 4GB sticks of RAM, and whether I put the sticks next to each other (of the 4 RAM slots, there are two blue ones next to each other and 2 black ones next to each other) or space them apart, The BIOS still shows that I have 8GB installed. I have been getting an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD error, and have read in some other places that it could be hardware/RAM related. Does the RAM need to go in the A1, A2 slots (different colored but both A), or the A1 B1 slots? (A1 B1 are both the lovely blue color.) Any help would be awesome. THANKS!

  I'm considering setting up a PC as a Media Center. Mainly to watch movies (ideally HD quality) and listening to music, but also to perform tasks like e-mail, web browsing, ... I quite like the looks and the price of this barebone: http://www.asus.de/Barebone_PC/S_Series_7L/S2P8H61E However it comes with integrated graphics and audio and only has one free PCI-Express slot. Which would mean in the worst case, where both integrated graphics and audio turn out to be insufficient, I could only upgrade one. • Effects of enabling DVFS in a CPU

  I came up with this energy regulating software called Granola while reading at Ghacks.net I downloaded and installed the software but you need to enable the DVFS function in the CPU. I booted up and tried to enable DVFS in the CPU Configuration in my Asus motherboard(Desktop). But in the description it said that enabling the feature might raise some compatibility issues with the power supply. And I'm afraid that I might ruin the CPU if I do this. Any suggestions, any one here who has tried this before? I don't know who the manufacturer of my power supply is. Would you recommend some software that can determine every possible info about the power supply.

• MacBook Pro 13 (mid 2010 model) - External Display Low Resolution

  I am trying to connect my ASUS VH242H (1920x1020), with my Macbook Pro. The laptop has a 320m nvidia and it should be more than enough to support an external display. I had my old laptop connected, (with a 9600mgt) and it worked fine.I am not mirroring the display I just want an extension ( if possible only the external display diplaying). • Supermicro MBD-X9DRL-IF-B and 8 X Hynix 4Gb DDR3 ECC dont boot

  I have a custom build server with 2 Xeon E5-2609 and Supermicro MBD-X9DRL-IF-B. Right now the server has 4X Hynix 4Gb 2Rx8 PC3L-10600R-9-10-B0 HMT351R7BFR8A. and its working great. We baught another 4 from the same series of memory, when we installed all the ram (4 sticks already installed and we added 4 new sticks) the server didn't boot. When we replaced the current memory with the new memory - the server did boot. Right now we are in a problem because we need to extend this server ram but the motherboard don't run with 8X4Gb. Any ideas why? I have attached a picture with one of the current memory stick and one of the new memory stick. Thanks in advence.

• Server 2008 R2 Datacenter (and all other version) not detecting hardware

  I upgraded my ASUS KFN32-D SLI/SAS motherboard to the latest BIOS version and swapped out the 2 dual-core procs with 2 quad core procs. After installing Server 2008 Datacenter onto the system I noticed that it was not connected to the network. I open device manager and see no network adapters. I have to go up to View - Show hidden devices to even see the virtual WAN Miniport adapters. This problem happens in Vista and Windows 7 (all x64). What is even stranger is it all works in x86 mode. What in x64 could be causing windows to not even detect hardware that works in x86? Is the boot manager possibly the culprit?

  I'm buying an Asus eee-pc 1015PEM and hope to do test-driven Rails 3 development on it. Is the CPU fast enough or too painfully slow for this? I plan on installing Ubuntu. I currently develop on a 11 inch Macbook Air 2010 model. It works fine as a Rails development machine. But for some reason I'm drawn to developing on a cheap little netbook. I don't use any IDE's, and my development workflow is mostly switching between Vim, Gnu Screen, and bash.

• What does this beep code mean?

  When I wanted to start my laptop today (an Acer Aspire 8920G), the laptop started beeping. I know this beeping is a POST error code, but I can not figure out which one it is. The motherboard of the laptop is manufactured by Phoenix, so I looked up these POST codes: http://www.bioscentral.com/beepcodes/phoenixbeep.htm The beeping is in the form 1-1-1-1 (short beeps, repeating and even without ending), but this code is not mentioned by the manufacturer. Does anybody know what could be the problem? I don't know if it is relevant, but since a couple of months the CMOS battery was degrading. The laptop couldn't keep track of the time. Maybe a failing CMOS battery could be the problem?

• My Network adapter "D-Link DWA-547" is causing windows 7 to freeze up.

  Any audio playing, and sometimes the program i am using is constantly stuttering and freezing up. I have narrowed the offending hardware down to my: D-Link DWA-547 RangeBooster N650 Desktop Adapter If i disable it in the device manager everything runs fine and smooth. The card works, and gives me super fast internet. But the rest of the system hangs. I have tried installing the card with the drivers from the cd that came with it, i also tried the lates beta drivers from the d-link webpage, but the problem persists. What do i do? I am running windows 7 x64 on a asus p5b motherboard with 2 intel processors.

• Default Webcam Driver Issues

  I'm having troubles getting my monitor-attached webcam (ASUS VK248H) to install on my new computer. On the old computer, it was a matter of not using a USB 3.0 port, but I can't get anything to work on the new one. I have tried all manner of uninstalling/reinstalling the driver and resetting the computer, as well as literally every USB port on the computer (14 in total). It's not that windows isn't recognizing the device; it most certainly is. However, comparing it to the old computer's driver details, on the new computer, it is not using the ksthunk.sys driver in addition to the usbvideo.sys driver, like on the old (working) computer. Naturally, I figured the way ahead was to simply get this other driver to work with the hardware, but haven't really found out a way to do that. Does anyone know of a way I can force it to use ksthunk.sys? It seems rather difficult to get it to install anything when Windows is feeling that everything is peachy.

This is the setup Motherboard: Asrock A75 PRO4-M DVD drive: LG GH24NS90 SSD: Samsung 830 series 128GB DDR3 SDRAM: 2× Corsair XMS3 CMX4GX3M1A1600C9 (2× 4GB) APU (CPU+GPU): AMD A8-3850 Boxed I got a installation DVD for Windows 7 Professional x64 English (including SP1), but it doesn't work. I got a new one from the store and it doesn't work either. However they work on a other PC. So the DVDs aren't bad. I tried an old installation DVD for Windows Vista. Both 32 bit and 64 bit work. So the boot order and such are right and working on the new PC. Is there something I'm missing here? Any ideas on how to make it work?

• Shuttle FB51 mobo does not boot with external USB drive attached [closed]

  I am repurposing an old Alienware desktop as a home media server. The PC is based on the Shuttle FB51 motherboard. The BIOS is a Phoenix Version 6.00 PG, release date 12/16/2002. I have loaded Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on the internal hard drive. I am using a Western Digital WD Elements 1.5 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive for media storage. When the external drive is plugged in and the PC is powered on, it freezes very early in the BIOS self-test, even before it begins the memory test. If I unplug the drive, the self-test proceeds without further problems. I can plug the USB drive back in when the self-test is complete, and Ubuntu will boot and find the external drive normally. I've tried several changes to the BIOS setup without finding a cure for the boot issue. Any assistance gratefully accepted. JGB

• Is PCI Express x4 faster or slower than a standard PCI slot for graphic cards?

  I am looking at potential motherboards for a computer I want to build and ran into this conundrum. The motherboard has two PCI Express slots that allow for 16 channel cards to fit in them. The catch is only one of them operates at 16 channels, the other operates only 4 channels. My question is, would it be faster to buy a PCI Express graphic card and install it in the 4 channel PCI Express slot? Or would it be better to buy a standard PCI graphic card and install it in one of the available PCI slots?

• Can I restore Windows 8/install Windows 7 from BIOS?

  I recently got an ASUS K55A series laptop with Windows 8 on it, and have been trying to load Windows 7 on it for days to no avail, and recently I discovered how to get my Windows 7 install DVD to boot from the BIOS, but I deleted all of my Windows 8 system information from both partitions of my HDD and Windows 7 setup says it cannot install on the disc because of a partition format issue. I did not delete the recovery HDD partition for Windows 8, but I can't get the HDD to show up in my boot menu in BIOS, and none of the F keys work to get to recovery mode (only DEL and F2 work to get me into BIOS)

• Elan Smart Pad - empty settings window

  I am using my Asus UL30JT with Windows 8. I installed Elan Smart-pad driver 11.14.1.3. It basically works just fine, I have all the gestures and stuff. However, to adjust the settings I have to launch regedit.exe, because the window appears to be broken. Under Mouse - Elan Tab - Options I see this: Do you know how to fix that? Also, if you have a similar program, can you at least send me screens of what I can change? As I said, I am editing registry right now and I need some guidance what I can actually do :)

  I have P4 processor with nvidia card. Now if i don't connect to internet then my computer stays on for as much i can like 4-5 days. But if i plug in the ethernet wire. Do some surfing and leave computer as it is. Then computer fails. I mean The display on screen gets off Looks like something stopping the power supply to Harddisk. But motherboard stays on , FAN is still running , i can eject CD drive as well. But no display on monitor. I have to turn off and then turn on again.   I have an ASUS ENGT440/DI1GD5 video card which has three outputs: DVI, D-Sub and HDMI. I am using both D-Sub and DVI, but my main monitor is connected to the DVI output. Everything works fine except for the text mode. The card somehow uses the D-Sub output in text mode when both monitors are connected (when I disconnect the D-Sub output and leave only the primary monitor connected to the DVI output, it's being used correctly). How do I make the card use only the DVI output (or both) in text mode?

• Error 5A - Internal CPU Error

  So I built myself a pc for the first time. The machine has been running properly, and without issue, since March of this year. Today after an hour or so of gaming the machine shutdown without warning. Any attempts to reboot have been unsuccessful. I have managed to get it to post, twice, but it doesn't get as far as the OS before it shuts off again. I pulled the second video card so I could see the error code LED and it appears to be showing 5A which matches to "Internal CPU Error". Am I looking at a failed CPU or is this a symptom of another issue? Any feedback you can provide is most appreciated. • How to specify console (or primary display) for video adapter?

  I have an ASUS ENGT440/DI1GD5 video adapter which has three output ports: D-Sub (HD-15), DVI and HDMI. I am using both the D-Sub and DVI ports, but my main monitor is connected to the DVI output. Everything works fine except for which monitor is designated the console during boot. The video adapter seems to prefer the D-Sub output for the console. When both the VGA and DVI monitors are connected, then the VGA monitor always becomes the console which displays the motherboard logo, POST information and booting progress. When only the DVI monitor is connected, then it becomes the console as desired. How do I make the video adapter always use the DVI output (instead of the VGA port) for the console while booting?

• Where can I connect this USB 3.0 cord?

  My motherboard has 2 USB 3.o slots in the back, where the usual slots go, but the tower also supports 1 or 2 USB 3.0 ports in the front, above the DVD drive. So, there is a cord coming out of those ports that has an end exactly like the one in the attached picture. I am not able to find a matching port on the mobo, so I presume it doesn't have one, and I would need an adapter or else just leave it inoperable. I have an ASUS P8Z68-V LX and an Antec 900 tower.

• Should I bother upgrading my Opteron 270 Server?

  I have an Opteron Server machine (in a large workstation class case) running on the Tyan 2895 motherboard. It's a dual CPU socket board, but I only have one 270 in there. I have 4GB of RAM, but less than 3GB is addressable, even in 64bit mode, due to the way the board is designed. Is it worth spending a few hundred on an additional CPU and maybe some more RAM? The other problem is that one of the two SATA ports on the board had its wire socket break off. So only one drive can be run as of now. I could have it repaired, but at what cost? Add in the fact that the power supply is gunked up with dust and it's a bit of a nightmare. I actually work about it getting too hot. Seems that for the money I could buy a new server rack from Dell, but it also seems a shame to waste an otherwise working, and for my needs still very fast machine.

I have come to the conclusion that the resolution of the screen is too small, at the moment it is 1024x768 and I think it should be 1280x960, due to a message given at the resolution tab of the control panel. It states: (!) If your resolution is below 1280x960, some items on the screen may not fit on the screen. The computer is an Asus A54H and runs 64-bit operating system with Windows 7 Home Premium. • No SATA drives after PSU Upgrade

  I know this sounds a lot like this but I just confirmed that my MBR is fine as well as the SSD drive in question. What happened: I upgraded my be-quiet 700w PSU to the 1000w dark power pro. When I tried booting the system and none of the drives (all SATA) were detected, resulting in the "Boot device failure" error. After that I unplugged all but the boot drive, triple checked that all cables were in fact nice and tight inside their sockets, replaced both e-SATA and power cables ; still with the same outcome. Finally I reconnected my old PSU and sure enough the PC booted without any hassle (except of course for the direful construction that is currently occupying my desk). Does anybody have any advice on how to proceed? Surely, it is possible the PSU is faulty but are there other explanations? Thanks in advance PS. if of any help: Motherboard is GIGABYTE GA-PH67A-UD3-B3 H67 LGA 1155
