  Hi everyone thanks for your help. I am currently learning python now through Think Python: How to Think Like a Computer Scientist. It is a great book, and is free online. I will learn more about python through Udacity and books online. After I learn python, what will I need to learn next to build a site? I want to build an interactive photo site. I will have to learn HTML. Do any of you know a good book or web site to learn HTML? I need to learn how to have python in HTML. As you know, I am using an editor now, but I need to learn how to use python to build a site. I am sorry that I am so ignorant. • Am I getting paid a reasonable wage for web engineering?

  I've been doing some research and it looks like most people in my line of work - WEB ENGINEERING/WEB APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT - that get paid hourly, make anywhere from $30-80 an hour for their work. With that said, I have SEVEN years of experience with web development including OOP-PHP, MySQL, jQuery, OOP-JS, interface design, ajax, database architecture, etc. I am also very strong with visual design and workflow - thus, I've made some really high quality interactive interfaces. I also have a lot of experience with Zend Framework, Symfony, Wordpress, Drupal, etc and a really strong portfolio to show for it. Here's the catch: I'm 20 years old, haven't graduated from college yet (I'm doing part time school and ~30 hours a week of web development.) But I've literally been doing web apps since I was 13 years old. So my question is: is $14 an hour a reasonable starting wage for working at a company part time?

• Movie Poster Colors Over Time

  This spectrograph-like image records tens of thousands of movie posters over the course of a century, showing a steady shift towards posters that emphasize black, purple, and blue color tones. It’s a neat look at how the color tastes of an entire industry shift over time. Vijay Pandurangan had a disagreement with a friend about whether or not movie posters were becoming darker/bluer over time. Rather than simply agree to disagree, he whipped up a piece of code that downloaded and analyzed thousands of movie posters proving that, in fact, there was a slow and steady shift towards darker and bluer posters. • Is it possible to have my desktop loaded before login?

  I am connecting to the system with Putty (this is Windows SSH client) then running some service in interactive personal mode. For example this is a script to run freeswitch: dims@nebulla:~$ cat freeswitch.sh #!/bin/sh cd ~/bin/freeswitch/bin gnome-terminal -e ./freeswitch & I.e. it is installed in user directory. Also DISPLAY is set to :0 The problem is that I can't use this script until login once. Script responds with dims@nebulla:~$ ./freeswitch.sh dims@nebulla:~$ No protocol specified Failed to parse arguments: Cannot open display: After login, I can do "Switch user" and see login screen but script will be able to run since desktop exists. My question is: is it possible to "preload" my desktop, so that initial situation was as if I loogged in and the went to switch user?

  An interrupted installation of updates resulted in ubuntuone-control-panel-qt breaking and now I cannot install or update anything. There seems to be an error in python2.7 - ImportError: No module named _sysconfigdata_nd dpkg: error processing archive ubuntuone-control-panel-qt_13.09-0ubuntu1_all.deb (--install): When I try to reinstall the package via .deb a dpkg --audit yields: The following packages are in a mess due to serious problems during installation. They must be reinstalled for them (and any packages that depend on them) to function properly: ?python-pexpect Python module for automating interactive applications ?ubuntuone-control-panel-qt Ubuntu One Control Panel - Qt frontend ?hplip-data HP Linux Printing and Imaging - data files ?python-libxml2 Python bindings for the GNOME XML library ?apport automatically generate crash reports for debugging The following packages are only half configured, probably due to problems configuring them the first time. • Can anyone list some real examples of 'HTML5' being used in the wild?

  I am using HTML5 in the same way everyone seems to be using it these days, meaning: HTML5 tags, Canvas / 3D / javascript and CSS3. I am struggling to find examples of sites that are using these technologies practically and that are not just a demo of something cool someone has managed to do using Canvas or CSS3 transforms or shapes. I am looking for sites that have a nice visual look but also take advantage of things like animation, scrolling and offset à la Silverback or the Canvas to create an interactive and I guess 'Flash-looking' site. These are some examples that I have found: Scrolling http://nikebetterworld.com/index http://benthebodyguard.com/ Animation http://www.elladesign.com/contact.html Other http://www.pirateslovedaisies.com/ I am using HTML5 loosely and I hate to be using it. • Looking for feedback on design pattern for simple 2D environment

  I'm working in iOS. I am trying to make a very simple 2D environment where there are some basic shapes you can drag around with your finger. These shapes should interact in various ways when dropped on each other, or when single-tapped versus double-tapped, etc. I don't know the name for the design pattern I'm thinking of. Basically, you have a bunch of arrays named after attributes, such as "double-tappable" or "draggable" or "stackable". You assign these attributes to the shapes by putting the shapes in the arrays. So, if there's a double-tap event, the code gets the location of it, then iterates through the "double-tappable" array to see if any of its members are in that location. And so on: every interactive event causes a scan through the appropriate array or arrays. It seems like that should work, but I'm wondering if there's a better pattern for the purpose.

• Is there any Google Adsense revenue if a visitor rolls over (hovers) on an ad unit?

  I have noticed an increase in interactive flash animations especilly on 300px wide adsense ads. Many of them ask the visitor to rollover to either reveal what the ad is about, show a clip, etc. So I wonder: the visitor is giving attention to this ad, is viewing its message -- without clicking on it. In essence, the ad agency's objective is accomplished without a click, which would be a significant money saver if PPC is considered. This seems very ingenious on their part, and I wonder how this is handled by Google. Shouldn't there be a fee for a publisher if visitors interact with ads, regardless of clicks? CTR becomes irrelevant in this context. Are you aware of anything being discussed in this respect?
