• What is a practical way to debug Rails?

  I get the impression that in practice, debuggers are rarely used for Rails applications. (Likewise for other Ruby apps, as well as Python.) We can compare this to the usual practice for Java or VisualStudio programmers--they use an interactive debugger in a graphical IDE. How do people debug Rails applications in practice? I am aware of the variety of debuggers, so no need to mention those, but do serious Rails programmers work without them? If so, why do you choose to do it this way? It seems to me that console printing has its limits when debugging complex logic.

• Diagonal line of sight with two corners

  Right now I'm using Bresenham's line algorithm for line of sight. The problem is I've found an edge case where players can look through walls. Occurs when the player looks between two corners of a wall with a gap on the other side at specific angles. The result I want is for the tile between two walls to be marked invalid as so. What is the fastest way to modify Bresenham's line algorithm to solve this? If there isn't a good solution, is there a better suited algorithm? Any ideas are welcome. Please note the solution should also be capable of supporting 3d. • Am I allowed to display a small image on top of a Google Maps Static Api map?

  I am the webmaster to my company's website. I was asked to make the Google Map on this page smaller, but the interactive map doesn't work well at all at 300x200. I was asked to place a screenshot there but since that seems to be a violation of Google's terms I decided to use the Static Maps API. As you can see, on the page, I have a custom pointer icon. I don't want to lose it, so I intend to use HTML and CSS to place the pointer over the map, thus replacing the original pointer on the client side. Am I allowed to do that?

• Game Engine that allows for objects being placed in-game

  I am looking for a game engine with multiplayer support that allows for players to place objects in the terrain. (eg. in TF2 one can place teleporters, etc...or in minecraft one can place blocks). I don't need the placeable objects to be interactive like in TF2, but I just need an engine that won't make me code this from scratch. I have decent knowledge of Python, PHP, HTML, C++ and C# (and a small knowledge of Lua scripting, although I have only been at it for a few months) so I should be able to handle most engines. So far I have looked at UDK and Cryengine, and wasn't thrilled with either.

• Strategies for browser compatibility on web applications in a corporate environment

  With the new CSS 3 and HTML 5 technology, web applications have gained a lot of new tools for a better UI (user interface) interaction, beautiful templates and even responsive layout to fit into tablets and smartphones. Within a corporate environment, those new technologies are required so the company can "follow" the IT evolution and their concurrent, but they also want that those new web applications supports old browsers. How should I deal with this situation? By one side we are asked to follow the the evolution of technology, create responsive layouts and use a lot of cool jQuery plugins. On the other hand, we are asked to support old browsers that do not support those new responsive features, plugins or components. I would like advice and strategies on how to create "modern" web applications that are also supported on old browsers. How does your company deal with this situation? Is it possible to have the same web application run well and beautifully on old browsers, and be responsive and interactive on newer browsers?

• alias of nodejs as node on 14.04

  i installed nodejs with apt-get on 14.04 When i do nodejs -v v0.10.25 and when i do node -v node : command not found. So i want to make alias of nodejs as node So i inserted a line in ~/.bashrc alias node=nodejs Now i can access the nodejs with node on terminal. But in my project, i use grunt which fires nodemon via gruntfile.js. Now nodemon tries to run node instead of nodejs Now again i get the same problem node : command not found. Means alias was not made for non-interactive shell non-login shell. Where should i make the alias for this specific purpose and get my problem solved?

• OmniGraffle for iPad Now Supports VGA Output

  I have (surprisingly) gotten a lot of comments over the last post about using OmniGraffle as an interactive EA tool.  The news flash/update is that it now supports VGA output.  I had sent a note to the developers and they responded that this was a highly sought after feature…well, they delivered. I have tried it informally and it works, thought there is a little lag between the drawing on the screen and the output, but it is not terrible. • What's the format of Real World Performance Day?

  A question that has cropped a lot of late is "what's the format of Real World Performance Day?" Not an unreasonable question you might think. Sure enough, a quick check of the Independent Oracle User Group's website tells us a bit about the Real World Performance Day event, but no formal agenda? This was one of the questions I posed to Tom Kyte (one of the main presenters) in our recent podcast. Tom tells us that this isn't your traditional event where one speaker follows another with loads of slides. In fact, the Real World Performance Day features Tom and fellow Oracle performance experts - Andrew Holdsworth and Graham Wood - continuously on stage throughout the day. All three will be discussing database performance challenges and solutions from development, architectural design and management perspectives.
