• How to disable a touchpad on an Acer Travelmate 6492?

  I think it's broken because it starts working in the same way when i install their drivers in windows. It's an acer travelmate 6492. I want to disable it because i think that is broken, however i'm going to write what happens and if someone knows what could be wrong if it's not physically broken, can tell me how to solve it. Well, the main problem is that is scrolling all down every time so i can't do almost anything. I've tried to remove xserver-xorg-input-synaptics but it got worse and it was every time pressing enter or something like that so it was very annoying. Then when i could repair it, i tried with gpointing-device-settings and gsynaptics, but it continued doing the same even with i disabled it from there. The only thing that seems to have a positive effect is to use x(whatever) option instead of gnome when login in and disabling it with xinput. However, it only lasted some minutes before it started working and i had to disable it again. Any idea about how can i disable or fix it? Thanks in advance.

• Part 4: Development Standards or How to share

  Although we usually introduce the custom development part in EBS projects as “a small piece only” and “we will avoid as best as possible”, the development effort can be enormous and should therefore be well addressed by project standards. Any additional solution or additional software tool or product shall influence the custom development rules (by adding, removing or replacing sections). It is very common in EBS projects to create a so called “MD.030 Development Standards” document and put everything what’s related to development conventions into it. This document gets approval and will be shared among all developers. Later, additional sections have to be added, and usually the development lead is responsible for doing this. However, sometimes used development techniques are not documented properly, and therefore the development solutions deviate from each other, or from the initially agreed standards. My advice would be the following: keep the MD.030 as a base document, and add a Wiki on top. The “Development Wiki” covers the following: Collect input from every developer without updating the MD.030 directly Collect additional topics that might need further specification Allow a discussion about such topics by reviewing/updating the wiki directly Add also decisions or open questions right into it. In one of my own projects we were using this “Developer Wiki” quite extensive, and my experience is very positive. We had different sections in it, good cross references, but also additional material like code templates, links to external web pages etc. By using this wiki, the development standards became “owned” by the right group of people, the developers. They recognized that information sharing can improve the overall development quality, but will also reduce the workload on individuals. Finally, the wiki was much more accurate and helpful for the daily development work than our initial MD.030, and we all decided to retire the document completely. Summary: Information sharing in the development area is very important! The usual “MD.030 Development Standards“ is a good starting point, but should be combined with a “Development Wiki”, allowing everyone to address and discuss necessary improvements. A well-structured Wiki can replace the document in some sections completely. • Thoughts on Technical Opinions

  Nearly every day, people send email from the C# Station contact form with feedback on the tutorial.  The overwhelming majority is positive and “Thank You” notes.  Some feedback identifies problems such as typos, grammatical errors, or a constructive explanation of an item that was confusing.  It’s pretty rare, but I even get emails that are not very nice at all – no big deal because it comes with the territory and is sometimes humorous.  Sometimes I get questions related to the content that is more of a general nature, referring to best practices or approaches. It’s these more general questions that are sometimes interesting because there’s often no right or wrong answer. There was a time when I was more opinionated about these general scenarios, but not so much anymore. Sure, people who are learning are wanting to know the “right” way to do something and general guidance is good to help them get started.  However, just because a certain practice is the way you or your clique does things, doesn’t mean that another approach is wrong.  These days, I think that a more open-minded approach when providing technical guidance is more constructive. • Flow Fields in Dynamics NAV

  I don’t know the exact business reason but someone asked how to identify all sales shipping orders with any negative quantities on them.  They needed to print these separately from the shipments that only have all positive quantities. Here is one way to solve this problem In NAV, open Sales Shipment Header Add a field of type Boolean (The field type should match the value you expect to return from the flow field method.  In this case we will use an exist so we expect a bool but we could have used a Sum, Average, Min, Max, Count, or a Lookup to return a value). Define it as a flow field and click on the ellipse next to CalcFormula Now [Has Negative Qty] is false if no negatives exist And [Has Negative Qty] and true if a negative exist So it is ready to be used as a filter on the report. Don’t forget that if you are using it in code, you may need to CalcFields. Hope that helps.  If you really can’t afford the field in your header, you can use code to check the lines for a negative value each time and use a skip or break function to skip that header record but it seems expensive to check them all if you only want a few to print. Please let me know if you think of a better solution.

• Will an online degree get you a job that requires "CS or equivalent 4-year degree"? [on hold]

  I'm a nerdy slacker type who didn't get my life together till I was 30. I've had a real job for a couple years doing C#/SQL. I've gotten several raises, but I'm making less than most developers, and the atmosphere is ... not positive. Looking for a new job, I think my applications get thrown out because I don't have a degree. And I want to finish a Bachelor's just to feel like less of a loser. I have a lot of college credits from 1996-2003 and a low GPA, so I don't know if that's worth much. An online degree looks like a good option, but I just don't know what I should be looking at for online schools because they all look like fake degrees. If they had programs equivalent to a real Comp Sci degree, I don't think they would have weird sounding names like they do. University of Phoenix has a B.S./Information Technology-Software Engineering. DeVry has a B.S./Computer Engineering Technology program. But that's not CS, and most other things I see have even more fake-sounding names. Are these useless degrees? Some people say DeVry and UoP are acceptable, some people say they're a joke. I have enough experience now, though, that maybe all I'm missing is being able to check the box that I have a 4-year degree. Harvard Extension seems like a real degree, even if it isn't a real Harvard degree, but I'd have to live there at least 3 months, which kinda defeats the purpose of an online degree fitting around work.

• Software development company business plan

  I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum for this question, so please forward me to the right place. I have about 10 years professional experience as software developer. Mostly on the Java platform doing server side programs. I have picked up a bit of Linux skills on the way as well. I know HTML and Javascript, so I can make a website that would not be too ugly, but I am not going to win any prizes with it. In fact I think I am pretty terrible in the user interface department. My initial plan is to do Android development. I read a few Android books and tried making a few apps. Since it is Java based I think I got the technical side down. Lately I have been thinking about iphone and Mac development, because of the relevant app store/development programs. The trouble is I don't know Objective C. As a side question, how long would it take me to become proficient in Objective C? Considering that I am working on my own and could hire somebody to help me for a short time for low wages if necessary what are my options? What are the pro and cons of the development programs app stores of Android and Apple? Which development/app stores are out there beside the ones I mentioned? Do you think it is necessary to find funds to get me started or should I just use my savings? If you have positive/negative experiences in a similar situations can you please share them? • Name of the Countdown Numbers round problem - and algorithmic solutions?

  For the non-Brits in the audience, there's a segment of a daytime game-show where contestants have a set of 6 numbers and a randomly generated target number. They have to reach the target number using any (but not necessarily all) of the 6 numbers using only arithmetic operators. All calculations must result in positive integers. An example: Youtube: Countdown - The Most Extraordinary Numbers Game Ever? A detailed description is given on Wikipedia: Countdown (Game Show) For example: The contentant selects 6 numbers - two large (possibilities include 25, 50, 75, 100) and four small (numbers 1 .. 10, each included twice in the pool). The numbers picked are 75, 50, 2, 3, 8, 7 are given with a target number of 812. One attempt is (75 + 50 - 8) * 7 - (3 * 2) = 813 (This scores 7 points for a solution within 5 of the target) An exact answer would be (50 + 8) * 7 * 2 = 812 (This would have scored 10 points exactly matching the target). Obviously this problem has existed before the advent of TV, but the Wikipedia article doesn't give it a name. I've also saw this game at a primary school I attended where the game was called "Crypto" as an inter-class competition - but searching for it now reveals nothing. I took part in it a few times and my dad wrote an Excel spreadsheet that attempted to brute-force the problem, I don't remember how it worked (only that it didn't work, what with Excel's 65535 row limit), but surely there must be an algorithmic solution for the problem. Maybe there's a solution that works the way human cognition does (e.g. in-parallel to find numbers 'close enough', then taking candidates and performing 'smaller' operations).

• Developing my momentum on open source projects

  Hi I've been struggling to develop momentum contributing to open source projects. I have in the past tried with gcc and contributed a fix to libstdc++ but it was a once off and even though I spent months in my spare time on the dev mailing list and reading through things I just never seemed to develop any momentum with the code. Eventually I unsubscribed and got my free time back and uncluttered my mailbox. Like a lot of people I have some little open source defunct projects lying around on the net, but they're not large and I'm the only contributor. At the moment I'm more interested in contributing to a large open source project and want to know how people got started because I find it difficult while working full time to develop any momentum with the code base. Other more regular contributors, who are on the project full-time, are able to make changes at will and as result enter that positive feedback cycle where they understand the code and also know where it's heading. It makes the barrier to entry higher for those that come along later. My questions are to people who actively contribute to large opensource projects, like the Linux kernel, or gcc or clang/llvm or anything else with say a developer head count of more than 10. How did you get started? Was there a large chunk of time in your life that you just could dedicate to working on the project? I know in Linus's case he had a chunk of time (6 months) to get it started. What barriers to entry did you encounter? Can you describe the initial stages of the time spent with the project, from when you had little understanding of the code to when you understood enough to commit regularly. Thanks

• Make Gameobject Stand On Surface Facing Certain Direction

  I want to make a biped character stand on any surface I click on. Surfaces have up vectors of any of positive or negative X,Y,Z. So imagine a cube with each face being a gameobject whose up vector pointing directly away from the cube. If my character is facing "forward" and I click on a surface which is to the left or right of me ( left or right walls), I want my character to now be standing on that surface but still be facing in the direction he initially was. If I click on a wall which is in the forward path of my character i want him to now be standing on that surface and his forward to now be what was once "up" relative to my character. Sometimes my character is laying down on the surface or on the wrong side of the surface. Does anyone know nice way of solving this problem?

• SEO and internal links

  I'm fairly new to SEO and although I've read many articles on the topic I still don't have a clear idea of how to get my client's website get to the first page of Google Search. I run MOZ competitor analysis and see that a competitor that comes up at the top of Google Search has approximately same Domain Authority, Domain Moz Rank and Trust. They have 8 External Linking Root Domains while my client's site has five. Yet the competitor comes up as one of the top sites on the first page, and my client's side is on page #3. Then I noticed one drastic difference in competitor's ranking and that is Total Links. He has 1,388! I don't understand how this could be a positive factor in Search Engine ranking and how can they legitimately have 1,388 links (while only 14 of those are external). Another competitor who is #2 in search engine rankings has 773 links total with only 14 external links. It seems fishy, but yet there they are - at the top of the search engine results. Is that some current way to trick Search Engines? What to do if I'd like to get my client's website onto the first page by some legitimate means? Thanks.

• alsa - sound issues on ubuntu 12.04

  i am having an sony E series laptop.i have an HDMI port .at this stage ,i have tested my sound card , which provides audio out on my laptop i.e i could hear songs .my laptop has two sound cards amd 5450 and an intel-hda(alsamixer shows that as s/pdif) . i decided to connect HDMI output to my new HD-TV.but, i could get only visuals on my TV,NO AUDIO OUTPUT ( HDMI cable works fine with win 7).my laptop has two sound cards.but i couldn't switch output to other card.( i don't know ,how to do that) i decided to update alsa. complied the following code in terminal. sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install alsa-hda-dkms then,strangely no login sound, and no audio output on my laptop at all .then, started complied code from step1 sound troubleshooting procedure from offical ubuntu site.then, my speaker icon taskbar disappeared .obivously $aplay -l ,provided output as no soundcards detected . so , i implemented step 4 from that guide, it provides a output of all hardware devices in my laptop. *-multimedia UNCLAIMED description: Audio device product: Cedar HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5400/6300 Series] vendor: Hynix Semiconductor (Hyundai Electronics) physical id: 0.1 bus info: pci@0000:01:00.1 version: 00 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm pciexpress msi bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:f0040000-f0043fff *-multimedia UNCLAIMED description: Audio device product: 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 1b bus info: pci@0000:00:1b.0 version: 05 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:f5e00000-f5e03fff that command displayed output name of the two cards . but , still i have no positive output on $aplay -l. so therfore, i think alsa couldn't detect my sound cards . is there solution to this problem? it could be better,if alsa would channel output from multiple sound cards ? how should install and configure alsa such that detects HDMI cable as soon i connect to my HD tv? is it possible to alsa and pluseaudio 2.0 to co-exist, if so how?

  When a person mouse down, moves the mouse, and mouses up the system gets the different in the mouse down coord and the mouse up coords and loads in the new map items. However, the problem is it loads them every time so I want a way to track what has been loaded without too much work on checking or storing checks. Most promising. Came up with while typing this. Section the screen into 250x250 sectors and check if that sector has been loaded. Keep track of each corner of the screen and see if there is an area of those that have not loaded. Keep a record of the corners of the screen. When mouse up coords are greater then load the different. Problem is if they are at coord 10,000 then it will load from -10k to 10k positive and that is a lot of items to load. Check every item on the page to see if it is loaded. If I do this I might as well reload the whole page. If anyone has some suggestions; feel free to pass them on.

• Throwing and catching exceptions in the same function/method

  I've written a function that asks a user for input until user enters a positive integer (a natural number). Somebody said I shouldn't throw and catch exceptions in my function and should let the caller of my function handle them. I wonder what other developers think about this. I'm also probably misusing exceptions in the function. Enter a natural number."); } } while (side <= 0); return side; } I'm interested in two things: Should I let the caller worry about exceptions? The point of the function is that it nags the user until the user enters a natural number. Is the point of the function bad? I'm not talking about UI (user not being able to get out of the loop without proper input), but about looped input with exceptions handled. Would you say the throw statement (in this case) is a misuse of exceptions? I could easily create a flag for checking validity of the number and output the warning message based on that flag. But that would add more lines to the code and I think it's perfectly readable as it is. The thing is I often write a separate input function. If user has to input a number multiple times, I create a separate function for input that handles all formatting exceptions and limitations.

• can I achieve my dreams without a degree? [closed]

  It's really giving me a lot stress as my parents saying me to join college but I don't want. I know I can learn all programming by self studying but they keep saying join college otherwise no one will give you job. I always think positive but sometimes I also start thinking like them (what if my life will be spoiled if I do not go to college) There are so much things on internet. I can learn c++, objective c, java, AI, html, php all through internet (at least I think that I can learn whole by self studying and I can give 10 hour/day easily for studying) and I will keep practicing and become a good programmer in 2 years and then try to do some job for experience so no need to waste 4 years just for studying things which I can learn in 2 years and no need to waste money on college because they teach physics, chemistry all in first 2 years and I only want to study comp. Science. But now again I am thinking negative that what will happen if I do not get degree and what will I do after learning programming if I don't get job? Please suggest what should I do? Should I join college? or self study? Can I achieve my dreams without a degree if I study hard and learn many things? I have full confidence that I can self teach myself better than they will teach in college. I will open my app company and many more. But maybe I am over confident because I don't know what happens in real world. How they treat a person without degree, etc. Anyone of you had gone through this condition? What did you do?

The site has features like logging in, sending activation emails, tag/content search (lucence.net), syntax highlighting (prettify) and a diff (one of the js diffs), markup for comments all on this site and autocomplete in a textbox (remember, 10days). I wrote i have 5+ years of C# experience (i could lie and say more but smart employers will know its only 8 years old and 1.1 is very different from what we use now). I had employers REPEATEDLY say they are looking for someone who has more C# experience... wtf. Maybe they don't read my CV, maybe they dont believe it or ignore me because i am not yet a graduate. I laughed when i first read Steve Yegge The Five Essential Phone Screen Questions as i knew all of that (although i still never used graph datastruct nor know much about it). I'm pretty sure competency wise i can do the job. I am also positive no one noticed i have markup, a diff, autocomplete nor email activation/forget password (i offer a test user account). So maybe my site/example work isnt impressive bc you dont realize what is in it. In short i dont think they read my CV or notice my site. How do i impress employers? PS: The problem is i dont get to the interview. I had one and ruined it by speaking too technical to the PM because i was nervous. The other 25+ jobs either didnt contact me or was kind enough to send a rejection email.

• Is SEO affected negatively by having densely encoded identifiers of content in URLs?

  This isn't about where to put the id of a piece of unique content in URLs, but more about densely packing the URL (or, does it just not matter). Take for example, a hypothetical post in a blog: http://tempuri.org/123456789/seo-friendly-title The ID that uniquely identifies this is 123456789. This corresponds to a look-up and is the direct key in the underlying data store. However, I could encode that in say, hexadecimal, like so: http://tempuri.org/75bcd15/seo-friendly-title And that would be shorter. One could take it even further and have more compact encodings; since URLs are case sensitive, one could imagine an encoding that uses numbers, lowercase and uppercase letters, for a base of 62 (26 upper case + 26 lower case + 10 digits): 0123456789ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz For a resulting URL of: http://tempuri.org/8M0kX/seo-friendly-title The question is, does densely packing the ID of the content (the requirement is that an ID is mandatory for look-ups) have a negative impact on SEO (and dare I ask, might it have any positive impact), or is it just not worth the time? Note that this is not for a URL shortening service, so saving space in the URL for browser limitation purposes is not an issue.

• Is there a standard way to track 2d tile positions both locally and on screen?

  I'm building a 2D engine based on 32x32 tiles with OpenGL. OpenGL draws from the top left, so Y coordinates go down the screen as they increase. Obviously this is different than a standard graph where Y coordinates move up as they increase. I'm having trouble determining how I want to track positions for both sprites and tile objects (objects that are collections of tiles). My brain wants to set the world position as the bottom left of the object and track every object this way. The problem with this is I would have to translate it to an on screen position on rendering. The positive with this is I could easily visualize (especially in the case of objects made of multiple tiles) how something is structured and needs to be built. Are there standard ways for doing this? Should I just suck it up and get used to positions beginning in the top left? • ASP.NET MVC Cookbook - public review

  I have recently started writing another book.  The topic of this book is ASP.NET MVC.  This book differs from my previous book in that rather than working towards building one project from end to end - this book will demonstrate specific topics from end to end.  It is a recipe book (hence the cookbook name) and will be part of the Packt Publishing cookbook series.  An example recipe in this book might be how to consume JSON, creating a master /details page, jquery modal popups, custom ActionResults, etc.  Basically anything recipe oriented around the topic of ASP.NET MVC might be acceptable.  If you are interested in helping out with the review process you can join the "ASP.NET MVC 2 Cookbook-review" group on Google here: http://groups.google.com/group/aspnet-mvc-2-cookbook-review Currently the suggested TOC for the project is listed.  Also, chapters 1, 2, and most of 8 are posted.  Chapter 5 should be available tonight or tomorrow. • Is there a formula for this?

  TL/DR: Any way to work out if known numbers between a known start and ending figure should be positive or negative numbers? I am developing an application in PHP which can import and read PDFs. The PDFs are financial ones such as bank statements with records of transactions in and out of a bank account. I only have PDFs to work with, no other formats such as CSV unfortunately. I convert the PDF to HTML using pdftohtml and start parsing the data, the intended end result is an array of transactions. So far I have it working smoothly collecting dates, descriptions and balance. Converting the XML instead doesn't help. There are other pieces of transcriptional data such as debit or credit amounts. In the PDF, the credit amount is in one column and the debit amount is in another column so it is quite clear in the PDF. However, when converted to HTML, the formatting is lost and therefor I don't know if the amount was a credit or debit amount. So, my question is, given a starting balance and an ending balance and several known figures in between, is it possible for a programme to work out if those known figures in between are credit or debit amounts? I imagine there could potentially be several combinations of those known values to reach the ending balance so I'd like to apply a formula to return the correct credit/debit sequence only if its the only possible solution. If there are several ways of adding/subtracting the known values to reach the end balance, I can ask the user to look at it manually but I'd like to keep this to a minimum if possible. Possible to do, do you think? Thank you in advance for any help.

• Need Directions to become a programmer [closed]

  Before youguys go on about how there are many types of programmers, please read through the post. Long term goal: Develop my own software (company) Short term goal: Get a job that involves coding/programming Current status: Support Analyst (at a software company but does not involve any programming) with 40k salary, 3rd year computer engineering student I had everything figured out. I'm going to develop a 2D scrolling game for iphone or android, publish the app, sell a bunch, and then apply at a studios as a software developer. And then something hit me. I think I need to get a job that involes programming to learn as much as I can in the shortest time possible. So I got a phone interview at a fast growing start up software company, passed that no problem, but then had to take an online technical assessment. That failed miserably. I thought that if I could just present myself, show that I am hard working, positive attitude, eager to make self improvements, type of a guy, I could get the job. I was wrong. And now, I am lost. Im thinking of staying with my job until I find a new one as a programmer. I will be working, self studying, and trying to make this happen without finishing university. I forgot to mention that the online technical assessment was based on data structures/algorithms, OO design, runtime complexity. I was hoping that I could get some guidence. Should I be focusing on app development or study computer science fundamentals? I have a list of books I can be going through: Learning C# O'Reilly (I got interested in C# because of Unity3D and Mono), C# 5.0 in a Nutshell, Head First Design Patterns, Code Complete, Introduction to Algorithms, Programming Interviews Exposed, Cracking the Coding Interview, The Google Resume.
