• Stop RAID 5 from Initializing

  Hi, I am trying to follow Ictinike's guide on Recovering Intel RAID "Non-Member Disk" Error found here, Ictinike's RAID recovery Guide I have recreated my RAID array as per the instructions. However my RAID array status is then automatically set to: INITIALIZE When I boot back into my Windows XP desktop, the Intel Matrix Storage Utility begins to "Initialize" my drives. This is a long slow process that will take about 20 hours. I suspect all my data will be lost. I have gone back into my bios and disabled my RAID controller to prevent any further initialization and data loss. I have read that initialization will cause data loss. I've also read somewhere that it won't. I am not so confident in the latter. Is there anyway to stop this initialization process so I can continue to follow the steps in the recovery guide? • Using a Raspberry Pi as a VPN?

  So I'm sure many of you have heard of the new Raspberry Pi project. I was looking at messing around with Model B, which has the following relevant specs: Broadcom BCM2835 700MHz ARM1176JZFS processor with FPU and Videocore 4 GPU 256MB RAM Boots from SD card, running the Fedora version of Linux (ARM Version) 10/100 BaseT Ethernet socket USB 2.0 socket So I was curious if it would be possible to create a simple VPN out of this little machine. I do realize that since it's an ARM processor that might mess up quite a few things. Any ideas if this is possible? Just for what it's worth, this would be a personal project so I'm not worried about performance.

• Vista x64: Improving troubleshoot approach skills

  I'm not a Windows SuperUser, but neither just the regular user. I don't mind browsing the Registry, using Process Explorer, reading the Event logs, (un)installing new drivers and so on, but all this only makes me solve some problems. I tend though to run into problems where these tools aren't enough. Which tools should I learn about to improve my troubleshooting skills in Windows? Currently I'm using Windows Vista x64 (not moved to 7 yet), facing audio/video stuttering problems and I think this is a good place to improve my troubleshooting skills. I know this post is similar to this question, but my machine is only hanging occationally. • Set Display Refresh Rate in OSX w/o External Utilities

  I have an iMac and an LG Flatron connected as a secondary monitor. The recommended resolution for the flatron is 1680x1050 @ 65.290 Hz (horiz), 59.954 Hz (vert). For some reason, OSX is choosing a slightly different set of scan rates and this is currently my best guess of why the monitor goes into power saving mode when connected to the iMac (but works fine on a PC). Now, I resolved this by installing switchResX and fudging the scan rates according to the specs in the manual. But how does one change these rates w/o 3rd party tools? Which config files need editing? Thanks

  I've read a few similar questions but wasn't clear. I have a small office (13) users and recently purchased a new single server (this is all I have to work with for now). Server specs Memory - 16GB Drives - 6 SCSI (2TB) PROCESSOR - DUAL QUAD I plan on making the Hyper-V host the DC and then 2 VMs, one for a file server and the other an application server. Question - since I am restricted to this single server, would it be a big issue making the Hyper-V host the domain controller? Your input greatly appreciated.

  I just received my new SQL Server from Dell. The server will be serve approximately 15 OLTP databases which average 10GB in size. Here are the basic specs: Dell PowerEdge R510 with up to 12 Hot Swap HDDs,LED Intel Xeon E5649 2.53GHz, 12M Cache, 5.86 GT/s QPI, 6 core (Quantity of 2) 48GB Memory (6x8GB), 1333MHz Dual Ranked RDIMMs for 2 Processors, Optimized PERC H700 Integrated RAID Controller, 1GB NV Cache 300GB 15K RPM SA SCSI 6Gbps 3.5in Hotplug Hard Drive (Quantity of 4) 600GB 15K RPM SA SCSI 6Gbps 3.5in Hotplug Hard Drive (Quantity of 6) My first thought was to use 3 arrays. OS - Raid 1 - (2)300GB T-Log - Raid 1 (2)300GB DB - Raid 5 (5) 600GB Backup - (1) 600GB - non-raided. However, I could also do the following after purchasing one more drive for backup. OS and T-Log - Raid 10 - (4)300GB DB - Raid 10 (6)600GB The hard drive space is not an issue as the databases are not that large. I'm just trying to optimize the speed of the applications using these databases. So, what would you guys recommend?

• Does anybody wish to help a poor researcher publish a paper?

  I don't know if this is a good place to beg for help, but here it goes: basically, I need to run a secure recommender system simulation (C++ console application) in order to meet tonight's deadline, and the faculty's server grid decided to go offline. I could really use something like 10+ (actually, about 16 would be required to meet the deadline) virtual instances of some Linux that has GMP installed... Ideally, they should all have the same specs, because a part of the simulation will represent performance benchmarks. If my question is inappropriate in any way, I kindly ask the administrators to remove it.

• Ubuntu server 9.10 freezes up after ~10 minutes

  I just upgraded my Ubuntu server from 9.04 to 9.10 and after about 10 minutes it locks up. It won't respond to ping, can't ssh in and the terminal doesn't accept keyboard input. It does not have X installed. I then reformatted and installed it from scratch with the same results. There are two hard drives, the first is for the OS and the second is for media. The second has not changed, it is an ext3 formatted drive with one partition. I stopped random services (samba, ushare, transmission-daemon) to see if they were causing the issue, but it still locked up. I did a watch "dmesg|tail" until it locked up, but I didn't see anything. How can I troubleshoot this further? I don't want to downgrade. Machine specs: Dell Dimension 3000 Pentium 4 @3GHz 512M RAM

• What kind of server hardware is roughly necessary to serve website to 10k users?

  I've been looking at VPS's and the specs they offer for entry level setups seems somewhat surprising to me. I'm am new to this topic but many of VPS offer less than 512MB of memory and my laptop has 4GB of memory so I am curious what does it actually take in terms of hardware to serve say 10k users (say 5k daily active users)? I figure a large number of factors can probably sway this a lot but just for benchmarking, say the site is a social networking site written in php using mysql + apache that's not really doing anything unusual like serving lots of media. So essentially a very basic Facebook minus the absurd number of photos and videos. What about 100k users (50k daily active)? 1 million (500k daily active)? Thanks in advance.

The specs are: 700MHz G4 640MB RAM (should be enough for anyone!) OS-X 10.3 40GB hard disc with 30GB free space I'd like a recommendataion for an office suite that will work on these old boxes. I have tried Open Office, both the latest version and 2.4.3 for PPC with no luck. Yes, I do have X11 installed.

• MediaPortal crash when scanning my TV Channels

  Hello, I tried installing MediaPortal (http://www.team-mediaportal.com) on my old system. I installed & tried both beta & stable releases: Here's the old system specs: Windows XP SP3; 512mb DDR; 80GB IDE; K-World PVR-TV7131 Analog TV-Tuner; Inno3d FX5500 128mb 64bit; When scanning through the TV-Server, it crashes. I don't know if the incompatibility comes from the hardware or the OS, but my TV Tuner's own Media center app works well. For now, that's what im using. Anyone here familiar with MediaPortal? • Weird problem, special characters coming after formatting the hard drive, computer isn't starting 0_

  Hya friends , Last night my computer was working fine. But today when i came back from college and started it , it was starting fine but after sometime it's getting restarted , again and again getting restarted at different points , so i tried to boot it in safe mode but same problem. Now after all this , i finally decided to format the drive C (it is in 80 GB) and load new OS windows XP3. After formatting (quick format) and loading xp3 sufficient files , when it was getting rebooted for copying the actual os files , it hung and a weird screen came. • What's the difference between these Asus socket 1155 motherboards?

  I've looked on Asus's website, but they don't make it easy to understand what the differences are, and there's so many models to choose from! It's all spiel, and endless specs. How is anybody supposed to rifle through so much detail in order to make note of minor differences? • Will Dolphin emulator run (smoothly) on this machine?

  Product Specs: Intel® NM10 Express chipset /w Intel® Atom® D525 (dual-core, 1.8 GHz) I think the most I can put in there for RAM is 4 GB. (They don't make 8 GB SODIMM do they?) The Dolphin site is pretty vague about requirements: Windows XP or higher, or Linux, or MacOSX Intel Fast CPU with SSE2. GPU with Pixel Shader 2.0 or greater. Some integrated graphics chips work but it depends on the model (and only with DirectX 9). I'm trying to make a light-weight quiet little machine for streaming video and playing eumulators, and I'm trying to figure out the minimum requirements I will need to do what I want. I know I'm not supposed to ask for product recommendations here, so if you could just advise the minimum requirements in terms of CPU, graphics card, and RAM, that'd be helpful.

• Teamviewer and Virtualbox issue: some keys don't work

  I use Teamviewer on a laptop to connect to a desktop computer running Debian Linux. On this desktop computer I run Windows inside a VirtualBox VM. I have no problems interacting directly with Linux, but when I try to interact with Windows inside Virtualbox, some keys simply don't work! (e.g. period, "@", quotes). Is there something I can do to make the full keyboard of my laptop work correctly with the Virtualbox VM inside the remote host? The exceptions are being thrown when trying to access directories that are virtual dirs in IIS, and plain old UNC network shares What the implications for enabling the WebDAV extensions on our live web server? And will this solve our problems with the exceptions in our event log?

• Is there a rule of thumb for RAM upgrades?

  I'm having a hard time figuring out whether or not a certain laptop/computer's RAM can be upgraded or not. Is there a rule of thumb that determines how much max RAM one could add to a system without looking it up via external websites? A little bit of a background information: I work in computer sales at a computer electronics store, so it is virtually impossible for me to install any sort of software that would detect computer specs, and I get a lot of customers who wonder what laptop/desktop RAM upgrades usually are. Is there a certain rule that adding more RAM entails? Does it make a difference if it's a 32-bit or 64-bit machine? OS?

• Windows XP Disc: corrupt or not corrupt?

  Hi all, I just finished one of my builds and am trying to install Windows XP onto it. Here are the specs beforehand... Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4 GHz (512KB L2, 533MHz FSB) QDI Superb 4 Motherboard 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM Seagate 80GB IDE HDD Bestec 250W PSU 16MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro Samsung DVD-ROM USB 2.0 PCI Card Generic PCI Modem The issue right now is that when I'm running through the Windows Setup from my XP Pro SP3 disc, partway through the setup says that a random file on the disc is corrupt and the computer needs to be restarted. Every time I tried booting it up, a different file was noted as corrupt. However, I tested the same disc on another computer and the Windows XP disc ran to the end of the setup screen without error. I tried this on another computer and the same thing. What could possibly be happening on this one build to cause it errors during the Windows Setup? Thanks in advance.

• Input not supported message when monitor is powered off then back on

  I've been getting a message on my monitor where "Input not supported" is floating around. This only happens when I manually turn the monitor off and then later turn it back on. Leaving the monitor on and allowing it to go to the screen saver doesn't seem to cause the issue (but I prefer to turn the monitor off if I'm going to be away from the computer for any length of time). Any ideas what might cause this, only when the monitor is turned off manually? • Finding a laptop to fit my spec's

  I have a small list of characteristics that are required for a new laptop and have been looking for websites where I can specify my requirements and see which laptops fit the bill. I want to specify OS/RAM/HDD size/CD drive/screen resolution/battery life. I have found several sites so far where I can specify everything except battery life. Does such a site exist? I know that this is not a shopping site - but before any moderator rushes to close this question - please note that I am not asking "where do I buy this laptop" - merely what laptop fits this specs. I don't even care what country the website is based in.

• Most efficient Way to setup a game server

  I'm running a PHP based game which has over 45 Million members predicted for end of this year (2011) Currently we are on 7.5 Million, this game is being ran on facebook and I am in desperate need to help get this game server as efficient and as powerful as possible. it is a dedicated server with Processor Manufacturer Intel Model i7 920 Frequency 4x 2x 2.66 GHz NIC GigaEthernet RAM 12 GB Hard disk 4 x 1 TB specs. It has apache installed, cPanel, phpMyAdmin, several apache mods and MySQL. The game also runs 47 mysql calls per second per user. Is there any alternatives to the above which could be faster, more efficient etc? I dont mind having to recode the game to fit to it, as long as it maximises our upper limit of members on the game. • Computer Randomly Restarts (no crash dump)

  Hey everyone this is my first time here, so, my computer got pulled out of his place the other day by accident and it never got back to working decently ever again. I just stopped using it because everytime i power it on, it restarts. Some times it doesn't even reach the desktop, others it even allows me to run a game or something. It gets really random. Today i was trying my last attempt before sending it to fix and it ran fine for 40 minutes but as i tried to run a game the screen got really messeud up full of colorful lines and stuff and i'm assuming it had to do with the graphics card. Altho, my question is, what can be causing all this restart thingie? Can it be just the Power Supply failing me and hence, not giving enough power to make the graphic card go for instance? • Caching DNS server (bind9.2) CPU usage is so so so high.

  Hi, I have a caching-only dns server which get ~3k queries per second. Here is specs: Xeon dual-core 2,8GHz 4GB of RAM Centos 5x (kernel 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5PAE) bind 9.4.2 rndc status: recursive clients: 666/4900/5000 About 300 new queries (not in cache) per second. Bind always uses 100% on one core on single-thread config. After I recompiled it to multi-thread, it uses nearly 200% on two core :( No iowait, only sys and user. I searched around but didn't see any info about how bind use CPU. Why does it become bottleneck? One more thing, here is RAM usage: cat /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 4147876 kB MemFree: 1863972 kB Buffers: 143632 kB Cached: 372792 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 1916804 kB Inactive: 276056 kB I've set max-cache-size to 0 to make sure bind can use as much RAM as it want, but it always stop at ~2GB. Since every second we got not cached queries so theoretically RAM must be exhausted but it wasn't. Do you have any idea? TIA, -Gk
