  I am using Kubuntu and I want to expand the current window to the free space on the screen or to say it more precisely: I want to make the current window as big as possible without overlapping new windows (windows already overlapped should be ignored). Is there a keyboard shortcut or an extension to the KDE Window management, that realizes such a shortcut or a window button? I would also appreciate a hint, how to write a script that could do this window thing on keyboard shortcut invocation. • Star Trail Photos Taken from the International Space Station

  While most people have seen a star trail photo or two, seeing a set of star trail photos taken from over 300 miles above the Earth’s surface is a treat. Courtesy of Astronaut and Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit, the photos capture star trails from the vantage point of the International Space Station. He explains his technique: My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure. • Why aren't tangent space normal maps completely blue?

  Why aren't normal maps just blue? I would think that normal maps should be predominantly blue in color because the Z component of the normal is represented by blue. Normals point out of the surface in the Z direction so we should see blue as the predominant colour since the Z component is dominant. By definition tangent space is perpendicular to the surface. At any point we should have the normal always pointing in the Z (blue direction) with no X (red direction) or Y (green direction). Thus the normal map (since it is a "normal map") should have the colour of the normals which is just blue (R = x = 0, G = y = 0, B = z = 1) with no shades in between. But normal maps are not so, and they have gradients of shades in them. Why is this so?

  My organization is considering moving from SVN to Git. One argument against moving is as follows: How do we do versioning? We have an SDK distribution based on the NetBeans Platform. As the svn revisions are simple numbers we can use them to extend the version numbers of our plugins and SDK builds. How do we handle this when we move to Git? Possible solutions: Using the build number from hudson (Problem: you have to check hudson to correlate that to an actual git version) Manually upping the version for nightly and stable (Problem: Learning curve, human error) If someone else has encountered a similar problem and solved it, we'd love to hear how.

• My Ubuntu drive is running out of space, how to fix, something is wrong

  I'm moving from windows and am having trouble figuring this out: I'm getting a message that pops up saying disk space is low. It says I have 800MB free. I click on the disk usage analyzer and it shows 24.6 total capacity and 22.5 used. When I look in GParted it shows a partition at 72.6GB where I have Ubuntu installed. It also shows that 70.65GB used and 1.94 free in that partition. How do I figure out what else is in that partition? It's the only ext4 format. What am I missing?

• Unallocated space with important data

  I used GParted to convert a primary partition to extended one after copying the data to another partition. After having the extended partition I moved the data back. To my utter shock after a restart I found out that the new extended partition did convert into "unallocated space". I tried installing testdisk. Testdisk could identify the partition as a primary partition and not the newly created extended partition. So what should I do now? I badly want the data back.

• Detect Open Space in Farseer

  I'm working on a 2D platformer using XNA and Farseer. I would like the player's character to be able to grab and climb up ledges. Detecting a collision between the player and the side of a wall is simple enough with the OnCollision delegate, but I have to admit I'm a bit stumped on how to detect that there's enough clearance for the PC to mount the ledge. Essentially, I want to ensure there's an appropriately sized rectangle above and to the left or right of the PC (depending on their direction) and I'm not sure how I would check for such a space. Any suggestions on how to determine there is nothing in the simulated world within some bounding rectangle?

• Meaning of the free space indication in Deluge

  Recently I installed Ubuntu 12.0.4 using Wubi with my current Windows Vista. I have already installed all the 265 updates from the Ubuntu software center and downloaded Deluge from there. My hardrive is 80GB according to the disc usage analyzer. It also says 31.2 GB used and 47.8GB free. The confusion comes when I run Deluge. At the bottom it says 2.0GB free space. Is that 2.0GB just a size set from the torrent client and can be changed or am I limited to just that 2.0GB?

  I asked a question relating to similar to this already, but I think this is a clearer objective of what Im trying to achieve.. or whether its possible at all! Im trying to find a transformation (matrix ideally) which would transform the 8 points of a 3d unit cube to 8 arbitrary points in space. The 8 target points have no known structure. e.g: My gut feeling is that a matrix is unable to provide this xform since the cube faces vertices can be concave.. but are there any other methods of transformation? • Why does Bing not show my adcenter ads though there is enough space

  I created several campaigns using the MS adcenter. I'm targeting the whole world at any time with 2-3 placement texts per keyword group. The bids I placed are sometimes quite high, so they should get displayed. When I try to search for my keywords in Bing nothing gets displayed, though there is plenty of space for it. Bing mostly displays 2-3 ads, but the ones at the right side rather seldom. I'd like to know, how I can improve the fact that my ads are not being displayed - without increasing the bids any further.

• How to best implement Version Control for Web Development?

  Version control systems are obviously important in development projects but there use in web development projects appears to be more complex, what with the requirement of having a web server to run all but the simplest of web applications. With that in mind, I have looked around and discovered a few different methods of using version control in web development projects: Provide each developer with a virtual machine which is a replication of the development server and have the developer run their working copy of the application in the virtual machine. Have each developer use a sub domain on the development server, e.g. john.project.com and checkout their working copy of the app to the directories the sub domain points to. Use the version control system to checkout code, make a change, commit the code and then check it on the development server (which points to the head of the repository). I can see a drawback of 1 being the added time required to create the virtual machines and ensure that the virtual machines are kept insync with the development server (also the need(?) to continuously change the developers host file to point at the virtual machine not the development server). I can see 2 possibly being a problem if absolute URLs are used within the site unless there is an easy way to update the configuration to use the new subdomains as well. 3 is the easiest to set up but is rather primitive and it will presumably become quite tedious for a developer to keep checking in the code after every time change. How have the users of stackoverflow used version control with web development projects and which method/workflow was most effective. Please also include extra methods I haven't thought of / read about.

• What's the best practice for handling system-specific information under version control?

  I'm new to version control, so I apologize if there is a well-known solution to this. For this problem in particular, I'm using git, but I'm curious about how to deal with this for all version control systems. I'm developing a web application on a development server. I have defined the absolute path name to the web application (not the document root) in two places. On the production server, this path is different. I'm confused about how to deal with this. I could either: Reconfigure the development server to share the same path as the production Edit the two occurrences each time production is updated. I don't like #1 because I'd rather keep the application flexible for any future changes. I don't like #2 because if I start developing on a second development server with a third path, I would have to change this for every commit and update. What is the best way to handle this? I thought of: Using custom keywords and variable expansion (such as setting the property $PATH$ in the version control properties and having it expanded in all the files). Git doesn't support this because it would be a huge performance hit. Using post-update and pre-commit hooks. Possibly the likely solution for git, but every time I looked at the status, it would report the two files as being changed. Not really clean. Pulling the path from a config file outside of version control. Then I would have to have the config file in the same location on all servers. Might as well just have the same path to begin with. Is there an easy way to deal with this? Am I over thinking it?

• JSR 355 Final Release, and moves JCP to version 2.9

  JSR 355, JCP EC Merge, passed the JCP EC Final Approval Ballot on 13 August 2012, with 14 Yes votes, 1 abstain (1 member did not vote) on the SE/EE EC, and 12 yes votes (2 members were not eligible to vote) on the ME EC.  JSR 355 posted a Final Release this week, moving the JCP program version to JCP 2.9.  The transition to a merged EC will happen after the 2012 EC Elections, as defined in the Appendix B of the JCP (pasted below), and the EC will operate under the new EC Standing Rules. In the previous version (2.8) of this Process Document there were two separate Executive Committees, one for Java ME and one for Java SE and Java EE combined. The single Executive Committee described in this version of the Process Document will be implemented through the following process: The 2012 annual elections will be held as defined in JCP 2.8, but candidates will be informed that if they are elected their term will be for only a single year, since all candidates must stand for re-election in 2013. Immediately after the 2012 election the two ECs will be merged. Oracle and IBM's second seats will be eliminated, resulting in a single EC with 30 members. All subsequent JSR ballots (even for in-progress JSRs) will then be voted on by the merged EC. For the 2013 annual elections three Ratified and two Elected Seats will be eliminated, thereby reducing the EC to 25 members. All 25 seats will be up for re-election in 2013. Members elected in 2013 will be ranked to determine whether their initial term will be one or two years.   What happens when a user installs an ad hoc distribution of an existing app? And what happens if this app (or a newer one) hits the App Store officially? To sum it up: A user already has a v1.0 and receives a v2.0 ad hoc A user has the ad hoc v2.0 and the official public release of v2.0 hits the store A user has the ad hoc v2.0 and an official public release of v3.0 hits the store In other words, is the ad hoc version a stand-alone build or does it in fact update a previous version as expected from an update? And will it be updated as soon as a newer version hits the store?

• Why avoid pessimistic locking in a version control system?

  Based on a few posts I've read concerning version control, it seems people think pessimistic locking in a version control system is a bad thing. Why? I understand that it prevents one developer from submitting a change while another has the file checked out, but so what? If your code files are so big that you constantly have more than one person working on them at the same time, I submit that you should reorganize your code. Break it up into smaller functional units. Integration of concurrent code changes is a tedious and error-prone process even with the tools a good version control system provides to make it easier. I think it should be avoided if at all possible. So, why is pessimistic locking discouraged?

• Maven 2: How to package current project version in a WAR file?

  I am using Maven 2 to build my Java project and I am looking for a way to present the current version number of the pom.xml to the user (using a Servlet or JSP for example). As far as I can see, the best way would be that Maven packages the version number as a text file into the WAR. This allows me to read the version from that file and present it the way I want. Does anyone know of a plugin that can do something like that for me? Maybe the WAR plugin can be configured to do so? Or maybe using some other approach all together?

• Python: Best practice for including a version number in an app?

  I have a PyQt application that reads and writes data files. I am including a 'version number' in each file written. This is a simple number similar to: 1.2 or something (major and minor versions). I am doing this so that I can change the format of these data files in future versions and then still correctly parse them simply by checking to see what the version is inside the file. My question is what is the best practice for keeping this number stored inside the app itself. I.e. do I just hard-code the app version number into the class that is responsible for reading and writing files? Or should I have some sort of object/variable stored at the top-level of the app and somehow access it from the class responsible for reading and writing these files. If the latter, how do I store it and how do I access it? Thanks.

• After using lvextend, I can't recover unused space

  I needed to add more disk space to my CentOS VM, so I added another virtual disk, then used lvextend to add the space to the existing partition. The steps I followed was: echo "- - -" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/scan pvcreate /dev/sdb vgextend VolGroup00 /dev/sdb lvextend -l +100%FREE /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 resize2fs /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 This worked fine. I subsequently filled up the VM, then deleted most of the used disk space. However, the unused disk space was never recovered after I deleted all of the files. This will illustrate what I'm saying better: # df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 61G 32G 26G 56% / /dev/sda1 99M 20M 75M 21% /boot tmpfs 1006M 0 1006M 0% /dev/shm # pwd; du -h --max-depth=0 / 5.1G . I cannot figure out how to get the partition to see that only 5.1 GB is used. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

  I have a linux hard drive with three areas: /dev/hda1 - ext3 boot partition (20 MB) /dev/hda2 - lvm2 main partition (6 GB) unpartitioned space - 12 GB I would like to merge the unpartitioned space into the lvm2 partition known as /dev/hda2. I tried using GParted, but it does not support lvm2. What commands or utilities could I use to add the unpartitioned space to hda2 without losing my existing data?
