• lightweight access point?

  Im moving from an all in one to a router + access point. In doing googling and reasearch and talking to friends I ended up with router - cisco rv016 wifi access point - airnet 1142 lightweight access point. (lap1142n) In trying to set all this up and reading I think I bought the wrong access point. It seems I need a wireless controller? Can someone confirm that I should not have bought the lightweight one?

I would like be able to create a small temp network that could broadcast that network so any other computers connected to the wifi can go to localhost/ or an internal ip address and view my server.   So I am a small mac-user cog in a larger windows-based network machine. The network here works fine for most everyone else (on PCs), but I have random timeouts and issues with the Wifi. Luckily, I have identified a few problem access points by MAC address (via their log messages in Console.app). Is it possible to tell my Airport on my Macbook to avoid those access points, and only speak with the access points who are far less touchy about me drinking the Apple kool-aid? All of the points are on the same network SSID.

  Was running Windows 8 on a Lenovo G780 and updated to windows 8.1 Wifi does not work anymore, i always receive a dns server not responding error. I have tried using public dns servers from Google but with still no results. I've restarted my router with no results. All other devices on my network are having no trouble at all. I've tried updating the wireless driver but the manufacturers website claims that the Win8.1 driver should be updated with the update from windows. So i cant find a wireless driver... Anyone else having this error and does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?? EDIT: here are the driver details: Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter Provider: Microsoft Driver Date: 2013-05-31 Driver Version: 6.30.223.102 Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Thanks

  Using CentOS 6 I cannot get my WiFi interface to configure over DHCP. Here is my ifcfg-wlan0: This does not work (although it is correct): DEVICE=wlan0 BOOTPROTO=dhcp ONBOOT=yes HWADDR=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx TYPE=Wireless This works: DEVICE=wlan0 BOOTPROTO=none ONBOOT=yes IPADDR=192.168.0.253 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 DNS1=192.168.0.99 GATEWAY=192.168.0.99 HWADDR=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx TYPE=Wireless I don't want a static IP address, I want a DHCP assigned address. Both machines are on the same home internet connection. I have tried to share folders by going to properties sharing advanced sharing permissions checked all the boxes to allow all but I don’t see any shared files on my laptop. I know it’s possible to share folders between two Wi-Fi connected machines but how can it be done when one pc is cable connected and other is Wi-Fi connected on the same internet connection.

• WIFI: iPhone/iPad getting much slower bandwidth than laptop

  I just got cable internet installed (Comcast). It claims that my down speed should be 25mbit. Over wifi, I get close to that on my laptop, but only about 8 on average with my iPhone/iPad. I'm using testmy.net in the browser on all devices. I have an ARRIS / Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem and a Medialink Wireless N Broadband Router. I read somewhere that disabling WMM and the firewall on the router would help (is this even a safe idea?). I've tried both, and neither seem to make much of a difference, if any at all (sidebar: I've noticed that my download speeds vary wildly with cable internet... on my laptop, I'll get 12 down, then 22 five minutes later. Is this typical for cable internet?).

• Setting up VM server access via host MacBook Pro's WiFi hotspot

  I have a virtual machine (VM) hosted on a MacBook Pro (MBP). There is a server installed on the VM. I'm trying to make this server accessible via MBP's WiFi hotspot so I can see it from my iPhone when connected to the hotspot. The VM is Parallels (latest version) and its OS is Win7 and the MBP is 2013 with Mavericks. With default settings and no hotspot enabled I can access the VM's server from the host OSX. The network setting on the VM is "Shared" and it's IP is 10.211.x.x. When I join the hotspot from another laptop the other laptop gets an IP 169.254.x.x and it can't ping 10.211.x.x or access the server on that VM Is there a combination of settings on the VM and MBP's hotspot such that I can access the VM server from a client on the MPB's hotspot?

• Windows file sharing connects over WiFi instead of LAN

  I have a laptop and a desktop computer, and I need to sync lots of files to the laptop and back whenever I go on a trip, etc. I've got a LAN cable connected into an extra port on the desktop that I plug into the laptop so I can get gigabit file transfers instead of wireless G. They connect fine. If I do an FTP transfer, for instance, using the LAN IP addresses, it goes at ~40MB/s, as it should. However when I copy files using explorer and native windows file sharing it detects the other computer by name, not IP (eg \\DESKTOP-PC\ instead of \\192.168.0.100\) and always connects to it by its wireless IP address instead of the faster LAN address. Both computers are running Windows 7. I have tried editing the priorities of the adapters in Advanced Settings and putting the LAN adapters above the wifi ones, but this didn't have any effect

  Can my laptop with a 3G connection share its Internet via a Wifi router (Dlink DIR-615)? I turned Internet Connection Sharing on and Windows assigned 192.168.137.1 to my laptop's LAN adapter. Do I connect my laptop to the WAN port or to the LAN port of the router? What should I set as my router's IP address? Do I turn DHCP on my router on? Do I assign 192.168.137.x as static addresses on the other computers? If not, what? Is there anything else I need to set on my router? Thank you!

I know it's working because my friend with a Mac access the net fine. My friend with the PC can see the network, but can't connect to it. In the sharing prefs, airport options, I chose these options: Channel: Automatic Enable encryption: yes WEP Key length 40-bit password length: 5 chars (as specified in the instructional text) Update: I tried it with encryption turned off, and it works. Of course, I'd rather not do that... Any ideas?

  Hello! I realy need help with one strange problem. I have a wifi network in my appartment with wireless N home router Trendnet tew-652BRP. Everething work fine for three of my laptops, but I have one PC with D-Link DWA-140 adapter. It looses connection 2-3 times in 5 minutes. There is following messages in my system log when it does so: The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{9537A5C1-3B43-4C56-B94C-CE69A257C3AD} because a master browser was stopped. The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service was successfully sent a stop control. The reason specified was: 0x40030011 [Operating System: Network Connectivity (Planned)] Comment: None The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service entered the stopped state. in order of appearence. How can I stop it? I have the latest driver installed.

  My MacBook Pro will not automatically connect to a Wireless network with a hidden SSID. It makes me select the "Join Other Network..." in the Airport menu (in the system tray), where I need to input the name of the network, then security type, password and wait for it to connect. This is becoming increasingly annoying to have to do every time I come back to my desk. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5 and there doesn't seem to be an option to connect to a specific network, but rather "Preferred Networks." The only network I have set as Preferred that's in range is my home network, and it still doesn't automatically connect. Making the network publicly visible isn't under my control, so I'm stuck with what's currently in place. • MadMACs is attempting to run after wifi autoconnect in Windows 7

  I have been trying to get MadMACs to run on startup with my Win 7 x64 install. I've used the default registry startup option that is built into the script, but when I startup wlan0 is not randomized, and, in fact, the popup asking whether I want to allow the program to modify my machine comes up after WiFi connection (and obviously before the script has run). I would really like to get this working, but I'm at a dead end. Googling has not returned anything useful so any nudges in the right direction would be appreciated!

• Intercepting LAN network traffic via WiFi

  Let's get straight to the point. This is my fictive network architecture: My question is: Would it be possible for Laptop B to intercept traffic sent and received by Laptop A? Please note that B only has WiFi access and no physical control over Router B. Furthermore, Router A and B create different wireless networks with different encryption keys. If both shared the same wireless network or Laptop B had LAN-access to Router B, the answer would be trivial, but I'm not sure how the answer turns out in this scenario :-/ Thanks for your valuable help!
