• Wifi won't work without ethernet (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I have a strange problem. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Studio 1558 laptop. I'm usually unable to access Wifi (I have a BCM43224 wireless card with the STA proprietary driver installed.) So I have to unplug the ethernet cable from my Wifi router and stick it into my laptop's ethernet port to access the Internet. But when I stick the cable back into the Wifi router and try connecting to Wifi, Wifi inexplicably starts working. How can I get Wifi to work all the time without having to 'jumpstart' it with an ethernet connection?

Ie, are you simply given a link to the product you want to sell with an embedded ID in the URL? Does it involve cookies somehow? Do you take the order yourself and forward the information to the actual supplier of the goods/services? And how do you know if the program or the 'affliate network' isn't ripping you off by not creditting you for a sale?

• Unity and games don't work on new Thinkpad T420

  Here's my setup: Lenovo ThinkPad T420, brand new NVIDIA Graphics Card 4GB of Ram 128GB Solid State Drive Intel Core i5 Processor Given these specs, there's no reason games and Unity shouldn't be working. The strange thing is that both do work when I run from a live USB, but not when Ubuntu is installed to the hard drive. Is there something different with the 3D capabilities of running from the computer as opposed to running from the live USB? Edit: Some more information: When I log in for the first time when running from the hard drive, Ubuntu says "It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment."

• Scheme of work contract

  I'm in the process of setting up a (one man) company and got to a item on my list "contracts and insurance". I will primary be offering custom software development but may also offer some "open source solutions", install, configure / manage e.t.c. I'm not sure how to approach a contract with a potential customer. I want to be flexible and offer the customer rights over the product (when not using open source of course) but I obviously want / need to be able to reuse code, already written and any future work. Is this possible or is it just something that people do but strictly they shouldn't? Is there a standard freelancing / contacting developer agreement? Going to a lawyer I'm sure is an answer but a very expensive one! If not do you end up with a fresh contract with each job / client and lots of trips to solicitors?

The thing is, when I try to reduce the brightness of my display which would help my battery life dramaticlly is doesnt work. I tried to use the system preference but no succes. I tried to look of it changes something if disconnect the computer from the charge I the screen will dimm but once against I failed. What code keeps things bouncing against each other, what code makes the player walk into a wall instead of walk through the wall? How does the code constantly refresh the players position and objects position to keep gravity and collision working as it should? If you don't know what a collision engine is, basically it's generally used in platform games to make the player acutally hit walls and the like. There's the 2D type and the 3D type, but they all accomplish the same thing: collision. So, what keeps a collision engine ticking?

• unzip can't work well?

  Things like this, my friend send me a package named qcon.zip with his Mac pc. I use ubuntu system,when I use the command to unzip the folder,I found something was wrong.I check the permission,and use another soft named 7z,but it can't work now. when i use the command unzip qcon.zip unzip qcon.zip -d test/ it returns me that: unzip: cannot find or open ”-O, ”-O.zip or ”-O.ZIP. So after install 7z,the command I use , Error: qcon.zip: Can not open file as archive --add the command file--- file qcon.zip it returns qcon.zip: Zip archive data, at least v1.0 to extract So,what can I do now,the folder permission is right.

• Getting front audio jacks to work

  I run Ubuntu 10.10 on my Intel D945. My front audio ports don't work in Ubuntu, the rear one does. I never got it working earlier when I had Ubuntu 10.04 but this time I am going to try it again. How can I proceed from here?

  I have installed 12.04 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro. Wifi card does not work. Have tried various threads but none have the same problem.   Abstract: So, as I understand it (although I have a very limited understanding), there are three dimensions that we (usually) work with physically: The 1st would be represented by a line. I have changed the Keyboard Model in System SettingsHardwareInput DevicesKeyboard to Hewlett Packard Internet keyboard but doesn't seems to help. I have also Compiz-Config-Setting-Manager installed but I don't know how to make the right keyboard setting. • Does the Ubuntu mini.iso work with EFI?

  I have to install Ubuntu 11.10 from the AMD64 mini.iso on a system with UEFI BIOS motherboard. I have configured a virtual machine in VirtualBox for making a test install before I setup the real system. In VirtualBox I have enabled EFI. When the virtual machine is powered on and boot mini.iso the Grub commandline is shown. If I try to boot the normal Ubuntu CD it works fine and I get the normal boot options "Install Ubuntu" etc. Does Ubuntu mini.iso not work with EFI?

  I copied my panel launchers verbatim from 8.04 to 10.04, residing in both systems in the same path: $HOME/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers However, for some reason, they are not visible on 10.04's GNOME panel. Why? In my attempts to troubleshoot the problem I: Verified that copied 8.04 launchers have same permissions as manually created 10.04 launchers (-rwxr-xr-x). Added the first line as: #!/usr/bin/env xdg-open Logged off, then logged on. Rebooted. None of the above helped. So the question remains: Why? And how do I make them work?

• How to prevent code from leaking outside work?

  I'm working on an institution that has a really strong sense of "possession" - each line of software we write should be only ours. Ironically, I'm the only programmer (ATM), but we're planning in hiring others. Since my bosses wouldn't count the new programmers as people they can trust, they have an issue with the copies of the source code. We use Git, so they would have a entire copy of each of the projects they work on, when they clone the repository. We can restrict access to them to a single key with Gitolite and bind that to their PC's, but they can copy those keys to another computer and they would have the repository access in another PC. Also (and the most obvious method) they could just upload the files somewhere else, add another remote, or just copy the files to an USB drive. Is there any (perhaps clever) way to prevent events like these?

I've been working for about 4 years and and I am concerned with my long term career path. • Compiz does not work with proprietary nvidia driver

  I have a ThinkPad T420 with an NVidia Quadro video card. It crashes constantly when I close this lid (if you are curious..) and I suspect on a problem with nouveau drivers, so I installed the proprietary NVidia drivers. Howeer, when I install and use this driver, Compiz does not work. If I start a session with uses Compiz, no window manager/decorator is presented. I just can get Metacity working. Does anyone has any idea about what may be causing this problem?

  I can't seem to make VirtualBox to work, I've installed it and reinstalled by 3 ways: Terminal, Ubuntu Software Center and VirtualBox's official web site installation and I keep getting the same kernel error. I found a "solution" to this problem by typing in terminal: sudo apt-get install virtualbox-dkms But it tells my that "virtualbox-dkms is already the newest version". Then I typed in terminal what the error tells me: sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup but then I tells me that DKMS is actually NOT installed (which is a contradiction). If anyone has encountered the same problem and actually solved it please tell me and explain me step by step 'cause I'm new to Linux.

  I've already went through all possible advices and still cannot start my Atheros AR9285 wireless card. I have a laptop Toshiba Portege Z830 where the WiFi already worked under Windows 7. But after migration on Ubuntu 12.10. I'm not able get it work.   I heard of the game Dwarf Fortress, but only now one of the people I follow on Youtube made a commentary on it... I was more than surprised when I noticed how Dwarf Fortress actually generates a history for the world! Now, how do these algorithms work? What do they usually take as input, except the length of the simulation? How specific can they be? And more importantly; can they be made in Javascript, or is Javascript too slow? (I guess this depends on the depth of the simulation, but take Dwarf Fortress as an example.)

• Kubuntu - Roccat keyboard does not work under GRUB and works partially in BIOS

  The system specification GRUB boot loader OS: Windows 7 / Kubuntu 12.04 LTS Keyboard: Roccat Isku Motherboard: MSI Z77 MPower with the latest BIOS SSD/HDD: Kingston HyperX 3K (AHCI in BIOS enabled), 2 other HDDs I will provide more specific configuration if needed. The problem As stated in the topic I cannot navigate in the GRUB menu using mentioned keyboard (there is no problem when I use Logitech K360). I have tried both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. I cannot enter BIOS menu as well, however if I enter it using other keyboard, Roccat seems to work and I can navigate in the BIOS menu without any issues. Any ideas how can I fix that problem?

• LibreOffice Spell Checker doesn't work?

  I was a little surprised to discover that in LibreOffice (3.5.4.2), the spell check doesn't actually work. I was surprised since spell checkers have been around since....80's? Not a difficult thing. I am running Ubuntu 12.04, on a relatively new install. I haven't done anything to my dictionaries or language files. Under toolsoptionslanguages writing aids, I have the option selected to check as I type and to use the English dictionaries. However, I get no errors when I type spelling mistakes on purpose, and when I run the checker it just says the spell check has completed and closes the window. Is this a bug with Libre? or have I done something wrong?

• Chromium web-app creation doesn't work in 12.10?

  If you create an application of a website in Chromium and choose "desktop", a .desktop file is created. In 12.04, you were able to move it to ~/,local/share/applications/ and then start it from the Dash or the launcher. In my fresh 12.10 installation, this doesn't work anymore. I think the line that is misinterpreted is Exec=/usr/bin/chromium-browser --app=http://buymeapie.com/. If you try to run it from a terminal, you get the following result: 20:32 ~ speter Exec=/usr/bin/chromium-browser --app=http://buymeapie.com/ bash: --app=http://buymeapie.com/: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden (English: "File or directory not found"). Can anyone explain or knows a workaround?

• sudo does not work in GUI after upgrade to 13.10

  On 2 completely different machines I have the same problem after upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10: All programs/task requiering sudo permissions (software updater, starting synaptic, installing programs, shutdown) do not start / execute. No gksu (or other) window comes up. Synaptic never shows, software updater pops up with a "you are not allowed to perform this action" message. All programs / task work when started from terminal with sudo, like "sudo synaptics" asks for my password, starts and works as expected. I am in the admin group which is liked in sudoers config (verified with visudo and getent group admin). Some link from GUI to gksu (or similar) is broken. Please help! Radim

  Sometimes I go for what I find interesting instead of what is considered right. Having this attitude has been educational and it has let me produce work that I'm exceptionally proud of but it has also made me miss deadlines and disappoint people. Sometimes I think I'm this way because I don't want to "break" my curiosity. I'm afraid that if I ignore it I may gradually lose it. Do you have any advice for me?
