• Conditionally set a column to its default value in Postgres

  I've got a PostgreSQL 8.4 table with an auto-incrementing, but nullable, integer column. I want to update some column values and, if this column is NULL then set it to its default value (which would be an integer auto-generated from a sequence), but I want to return its value in either case. So I want something like this: UPDATE mytable SET incident_id = COALESCE(incident_id, DEFAULT), other = 'somethingelse' WHERE ... RETURNING incident_id Unfortunately, this doesn't work - it seems that DEFAULT is special and cannot be part of an expression. What's the best way to do this?

• LINQ to Entities and Business / Validation Rules

  We have a requirement where we need to allow users to dynamically create custom reports that will run against our database and return sets of data. It would be something similar to this: http://www.marcuswhitworth.com/2009/12/dynamic-linq-with-expression-trees/ but would ultimately contain the ability to create more complicated logic. I believe LINQ to Entities might possibly allow us to do something like we're attempting to achieve. I should note that these reports are going to need to run against multiple tables. Can anyone point me in the right direction for something like this? Has anyone done anything similar with LINQ to Entities?

  I'm learning C++ and I am writing a function that determines whether a string contains only alphanumeric characters and spaces. I suppose I am effectively testing whether it matches the regular expression ^[[:alnum:] ]+$ but without using regular expressions. I have seen a lot of algorithms revolve around iterators, so I tried to find a solution that made use of iterators, and this is what I have: #include <algorithm> static inline bool is_not_alnum_space(char c) { return !(isalpha(c) || isdigit(c) || (c == ' ')); } bool string_is_valid(const std::string &str) { return find_if(str.begin(), str.end(), is_not_alnum_space) == str.end(); } Is there a better solution, or a “more C++” way to do this?

• WPF with code only

  I've seen a lot of questions about the merits of WPF here, and essentially every answer says it's the bee's knees, but essentially every answer also talks about things like XAML, in many cases graphic designers and Expression Blend etc. My question is, is it worth getting into WPF if you're a solo coder working in C# only? Specifically, I don't have a graphic designer, nor any great talent in that area myself; I don't use point-and-click tools; I write everything in C#, not XML. Winforms works fine in those conditions. Is the same true of WPF, or does it turn out that important functions can only be done in XAML, the default settings aren't intended for actual use and you have to have a graphic designer on the team to make things look good, etc., and somebody in my position would be better off to stick to Winforms?

  Given an admin media class that sets up a rich text editor, like: class TutorialAdmin(admin.ModelAdmin): fields... class Media: js = ['/paths/to/tinymce.js',] I would like the ability to selectively override js depending on a field value in the model it references. I've added a "use_editor" boolean to the Tutorial model. The question is, how can I detect whether the current instance has that bool set? I'd like to end up with something like: class Media: if self.use_editor: js = ['/path/to/tinymce.js',] else: js = '' Ideas? Thanks.

  Hi, I'm trying to write a function that is gets two arrays and the name of another function as arguements. e.g. main.m: x=[0 0.2 0.4 0.6 0.8 1.0]; y=[0 0.2 0.4 0.6 0.8 1.0]; func2(x,y,'func2eq') func 2.m : function t =func2(x, y, z, 'func') //"unexpected matlab expression" error message here t= func(x,y,z); func2eq.m: function z= func2eq(x,y) z= x + sin(pi * x)* exp(y); Matlab tells gives me the above error message.   Hello, I have well-formed xml documents into string variables. I want to use preg_replace to add a defined attribute to every xml tags. For example replace: <tag1> <tag2> some text </tag2> </tag1> by: <tag1 attr="myAttr"> <tag2 attr="myAttr"> some text </tag2> </tag1> So I basically need the regex expression to find any start tags and add my attribute, but I'm a complete regex noob. • Regex for Searching for Text Not Preceeded By a Specific String

  Hi, I am working on a web site with several other developers and we have had problems where people commit JavaScript code with AJAX calls that use URL's relative to the site root. An example would be /Home/Index which will not work if the site is hosted in a virtual directory. To get round the problem we use a $.url() method to convert it to a full path, e.g. $("#container").load($.url("/Home/Index")) I am trying to write a unit test that will search each JavaScript file and find places where the $.url method is not being used. The only problem is that I cannot seem to write a regex expression to do this. I have tried the following: (?!\$\.url\()"(/\w*)+" But this does not work. I cannot find a way to say that I don't want the $.url in front. Does anyone know if this is possible? Note that I need regular expressions that are compatible with .NET Thanks.

  I'm looking for a very simple algorithm for computing the polygon intersection/clipping. That is, given polygons P, Q, I wish to find polygon T which is contained in P and in Q, and I wish T to be maximal among all possible polygons. I don't mind the run time (I have a few very small polygons), I can also afford getting an approximation of the polygons' intersection (that is, a polygon with less points, but which is still contained in the polygons' intersection). But it is really important for me that the algorithm will be simple (cheaper testing) and preferably short (less code). edit: please note, I wish to obtain a polygon which represent the intersection. I don't need only a boolean answer to the question of whether the two polygons intersect.

  I been trying to figure out how this blasted regex for two hours!!! It's midnight I gotta figure this out and go to bed!!!   I am having difficulty in reading data from my SQLite database from MonoTouch.   I'm trying to validate that the fields given to sphinx are valid, but I'm having difficulty. Imagine that valid fields are cat, mouse, dog, puppy. Valid searches would then be: @cat search terms @(cat) search terms @(cat, dog) search term @cat searchterm1 @dog searchterm2 @(cat, dog) searchterm1 @mouse searchterm2 So, I want to use a regular expression to find terms such as cat, dog, mouse in the above examples, and check them against a list of valid terms. Thus, a query such as: @(goat) Would produce an error because goat is not a valid term. I've gotten so that I can find simple queries such as @cat with this regex: (?:@)([^( ]*) But I can't figure out how to find the rest. I'm using python & django, for what that's worth.

• Check if there are any repeated elements in an array recursively

  I have to find recursively if there is any repeated element in an integer array v. The method must have the following signature: boolean hasRepeatedElements(int[] v) I can't see any way of doing that recursively without having to define another method or at least another overload to this method (one that takes for example the element to go after or something). At first I thought about checking for the current v if there is some element equal to the first element, then creating a new array with L-1 elements etc but that seems rather inefficient. Is it the only way? Am I missing here something?

  From a Service, I trigger a Notification which, when clicked, has to launch an Activity. To do this, I use the following code : notification=new Notification(icone,title,System.currentTimeMillis()); intent=new Intent(getApplicationContext(),myActivity.class); intent.putExtra("org.mypackage.name",true); intent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); pendingIntent=PendingIntent.getActivity(getApplicationContext(),0,intent,PendingIntent.FLAG_ONE_SHOT); notification.setLatestEventInfo(getApplicationContext(),title,"Message",pendingIntent); notification.flags|=Notification.FLAG_AUTO_CANCEL; ((NotificationManager)contexte.getSystemService(Context.NOTIFICATION_SERVICE)).notify("label,0,notification); When I click on the Notification, the Activity is correctly launched. But it's Intent doesn't contain the extra boolean added with the line intent.putExtra("org.mypackage.name",true);. Does anyone have an idea of this behaviour? I can add that I use Android 4.
