• What Windows licenses are required to run additional terminal service sessions

  We need to build out a server running Windows 2008 R2 Standard that can allow up to 10 simultaneous RDP/Terminal Services connections and I'm a little confused about how the CAL licenses work. From one source I was told I needed 10 "server CALs" and an additional 10 "RDP CALs" (total of 20 CALs). From another, I was told I just needed the 10 "RDP CALs", which implicitly came with the server CAL. The Microsoft licensing website (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/licensing-rds.aspx) seems to support scenario #1, but it is still not real clear what those server CALs are needed for. Also, can we use the 2 "built-in" RDP clients, meaning we only need to purchase 8 CALs to reach a total of 10?

• Need Boxee/Vista remote control recommendations

  I have an Acer Aspire X1200 (specs link below) desktop computer that I've installed Boxee on and it works great. And it looks like it's going to be a perfect computer for a media player.   I am trying to play movies from a USB drive on my DVD player. I have subtitles for different languages for a movie. (filename.en.srt, filename.fr.srt etc) When I place all the *.srt files in the same directory as the movie file, the DVD player recognises only the first one. However, if there is only one *.sub file which contains all the language subtitles, and an indexer *.idx file, then the DVD player is able to recognise all the language subtitles. Can I create an *.idx file manually? Or Is there any software which allows me to create an idx file that indexes multiple *.srt files or combines them?

However, the ActiveX content is not displayed in Vista or Window 7. I've tried relaxing the security settings to no avail. Any suggestions or guidance would be much appreciated.

This problem is in all two user accounts in this computer (Windows 7). There was one time where task manager seemed to work, but when I closed it and opened it again, it crashed. Any reason/solution to this problem?

  I have a Macbook Pro at work and installed the current VirtualBox (3.2.4) today. However, after using the VHD image for IE 7 on XP SP3 on this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=21eabb90-958f-4b64-b5f1-73d0a413c8ef&displaylang=en The Virtual Operating System (XP) just thought there is no network card provided by the PC (the virtual PC simulated by VirtualBox), even if I set up 4 network cards in Settings, as NAT, host only, etc. So the XP cannot browse any webpage at all... Does any integration package need to be added for VirtualBox to make it work and how? (is VirtualBox providing a "too advanced" network card so XP SP3 doesn't have the driver for it? thanks.

• SCCM for mobile device management returns 404 on /devicemgmt/server.resource

  We have a new Windows Server 2008 R2 machine onto which we have installed SCCM SP2 followed by the R2 package. We have enabled a mobile device management point and enabled distribution points to support mobile devices as per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680634.aspx We have also installed the Mobile Device Management Client on to a Windows Mobile 6.1 device. The client on the device fails to connect to the server. Our investigation so far has led us to the URL /devicemgmt/server.resource. However, looking in IIS on the server shows no such URL (in fact nothing apart from the aspnet_client directory) and visiting the URL with a browser returns 404. WebDav is enabled on the Default Web Site in IIS. BITS is installed on the server. Can anyone confirm whether enabling mobile device management will add visible directories to IIS and if so why it might be failing in our case?

• Laptop overheating within minutes of start up

  I have a Dell Windows 7 Home Prem with an I7-720QM. More information on the computer can be found here http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/servicetag/51CVCN1/configuration The Problem I am having is the computer will over heat unnaturally fast. From the time it takes from boot to when i can run my diagnostic tools which takes about two minutes the cpu temp is 86c after a few more minutes the cpu temp will reach 100 and the computer will black screen shut down. In total the the laptop can only be run for 3-5 minutes before completely shutting off. During this time there is nothing extensive running. After the laptop shuts down you have to wait for it to cool down or it will shut off even faster sometimes 7-15 seconds well still in the boot screen. Does anyone know what could be the problem maybe a sensor or is the computer fried?

All I know is that the computer crashed from a power outage. I've tried clicking the restore button and rebooting. Nothing. What else is there to try? Would like to have the desktop back. It powers on fine. I can login and use windows just fine. Just you get that annoying restore active desktop screen.

• Google Calender sync in Window 7 64bit

  Hi, Has anyone got the google calender sync (http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=89955) to work on Windows 7 64 bit with Outlook 2007? I have set up 2 way sync but it only seems to sync from my gmail calender to outlook calender. If I make an appointment in my outlook calender, it doesn't show up in gmail calender. I tried running it as admin, but no joy. I also tried running it in compatablity mode (XP service pack 3). But it still gives me an error when i do a manual Sync that says "Could not connect to microsoft outlook. error -2146959355" Thanks in advance.

• Windows 7 x64: 3900mb of 4gb RAM usage, even when (almost) nothing running.

  As the title suggests, I am having a problem with memory usage. I have had my computer (Vaio AW11Z/B laptop) for over a year now, and it was running perfectly until I guess a day or two ago. Now programs randomly crash, the mouse lags around the screen and the memory usage is going through the roof for no apparent reason. I am having exactly the same problem as this guy: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7performance/thread/1f716693-0a46-473e-9dc0-8c2b1a058443/. I think he explains it better. Anyone had a similar issue? What's going on? I don't think it's a virus/adware thing. Thanks very much for any help.

• Page won't load on IE9 unless developer tools are started first

  One of my pages (with very extensive javascript) won't load on IE9. It loads ok in Mozilla, Chrome, Safari and Opera. If IE9 Developer tools are running it loads fine. If I load IE9, load the developer tools (F12) then kill the developer tools it still loads fine. If developer tools are running then sometimes (but not always) the first message in the console is: HTML1113: Document mode restart from Quirks to IE9 Standards Doctype is: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> If I change doctype to and remove the xmlns nothing changes. I'm stumped. Any suggestions appreciated.

• SQL Server 2012 and SQLMail - will it still work?

  We are considering upgrading our SQL Server, which is currently running 2005. We use SQLMail heavily in the organization, both to send e-mails and to import some into a database. I've read on various places that SQLMail was deprecated and superseded by "Database Mail". I'm confused because this MS page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb402904.aspx seems to imply that it would still work? I understand the dangers of SQLMail but we do not have the resources to rewrite the scripts right now and would prefer to do it later on. Does SQLMail still work in 2012, and if not, how easy is it to replace with Database Mail, both for reading and sending e-mails?

• Cheap machine with Xen to have more than one personal dev servers with RAID option?

  I do not have a lot of money so when I need a personal dev servers I decided I will use Xen on one machine to run various OS's. Although, I really like Dell Zino (http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/inspiron-zino-hd/pd.aspx?refid=inspiron-zino-hd&cs=19&s=dhs) as a very economical and compact PC which can be scaled to 8GB of RAM, I do not know how to have a RAID setup, for the backup. Is there an economical way to add a RAID setup to Dell Zino or I would have to invest in a proper box for that? • HP ML150 G6 upgrading RAM/CPU beyond specs?

  I am being told that some limits on some HP servers can be crossed. Do any of you have any experience with that? A ML150/G6 is limited to 48GB RAM but I have been talking to a German company that guaranties me that this server will be able to be upgraded to 384GB RAM (using 32GB memory modules and 2 CPUs) http://www.compuram.de/en/memory,HP+%28-Compaq%29,Server,Proliant,ML150+G6.htm Can this really be true? The server that I have is using E5504 CPUs but will I be able to upgrade to any CPU that is using a LGA1366 socket? All from a low wattage L5640 all the way to the 6 core, high wattage versions like an X5650? (If cooling and power is adequate ofcause).   How I enable directory browsing in IIS7? MS technet says this can be done in the IIS console: Open IIS Manager and navigate to the level you want to manage. In Features View, double-click Directory Browsing. In the Actions pane, click Enable if the Directory Browsing feature is disabled and you want to enable it. Or, click Disable if the Directory Browsing feature is enabled and you want to disable it. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731109%28WS.10%29.aspx However, my IIS console doesn't have the Directory Browsing option mentioned in Step 2. How can this option be made available. Note, this is for a static HTML site, so I don't have any web.config or ASPX files.

• Google Chrome is in Danish

  I'm not sure what i have done, but by default, Chrome comes up in Danish. I can ignore this most of the time but its v annoying and i cant seem to change it. For example google directions come up in Danish too and have to be translated back to English! I have tried the spanner icon, and i've confirmed the only two languages specified are En and US English. Does anyone have any ideas how i can default it back to English all the time. • Can't figure out how to make Slitaz USB persistent

  I installed Slitaz on my USB. However I can't figure out how to make it persistent automatically. There are different sources telling me different ways to make it persistent. One told me to add "slitaz home=usb" to the syslinux.cfg file like this: append initrd=/boot/rootfs.gz rw root=/dev/null vga=normal autologin slitaz home=usb but it didn't work for me. http://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/handbook/liveusb.html gave an example of how to do it manually but I didn't try it and I also want it to happen automatically. custompc.co.uk/features/602451/make-any-pc-your-own-with-linux-on-a-usb-key.html is an older article that also explains how to make the USB persistent but I don't want to try it cause it looks outdated (from 2008) does anyone know the best way to make the USB automatically persistent?

  Hello, We have several thousand 'contacts' setup in AD already for a faxing system. We're migrating to an online fax provider that uses e-mail rather than plain old telephone. So, we've bulk edited all the AD records so that the 'mail' attribute is populated with the right e-mail address in the right format. Now, how do we enable these contacts within Exchange 2007? I've looked through http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb684891.aspx but that only seems to talk about manually editing the CSV output to specify the external addresses. AD already knows the external e-mail addresses - I just need the info in Exchange! Any thoughts?

  A Shining Example: Inside all of my task sequences I have a group that installs driver packages conditionally based on computer model: And of course, this list does nothing but grow. The fact that it grows isn't a big deal, what is a big deal is that every time it changes I have to manually copy and paste those changes across every task sequence I have, which of course leaves huge room for human error. The same goes for other groups of tasks that are common across task sequences. Looking for a solution where I could centrally manage these tasks, be it link other task sequences to a group within another task sequence, or create a separate task sequence and link to that. I came across a solution by John Marcum (SCCM MVP) that mentioned this ability, but this was a while ago and I can't find the link to it anymore to see if it's even still being updated/maintained, but I'm looking for more of a free solution, or even using Powershell or the ConfigMgr SDK is fine with me, I'm no stranger to either. • Intermediate SSL Certificates on Azure Websites

  I have successfully configured an Extended-Validation Certificate on an Azure Website following this article: http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/documentation/articles/web-sites-configure-ssl-certificate/ The main (non-technical) stakeholder of the web application went through great lengths to validate that our site is secure. He went to this site to check the validity of our SSL: http://www.whynopadlock.com/ The site throw the following error: `SSL verification issue (Possibly mis-matched URL or bad intermediate cert.). Details: ERROR: no certificate subject alternative name matches`` The certificate is installed using IP Based SSL instead of SNI. This is done this way because some site visitors still use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP, which has no support for SNI and throws a security warning. Is my certificate correclty installed? I received three .CRT files from my SSL provider: PrimaryIntermediate.crt SecondaryIntermediate.crt EndCertificate.crt This is how I exported our certificate as a .PFX file to Azure: openssl pkcs12 -export -out myserver.pfx -inkey myserver.key -in myserver.crt
