  Suppose your bank clerk gives you an arbitrary password such as hel34/hjal0@# and you cannot remember it without writing it to a paper. Dilemma: you never write passwords to paper. So you try to invent an encryption, one-to-one map, where you write only a key to a paper, only numbers, and leave the rest junk to your server. Of course, the password can consist of arbitrary things. Implemention should work like hel34/hjal0#@ ---- magic ----> 3442 and to other way: 3442 ---- server magic ---> hel34/hjal0#@ [Update] mvds has the correct idea, to change the base, how would you implement it?

• AS3 + addChild() getting image from library to the stage

  Hi, I have an .fla file with 1 image in the library and 1 .as file. I have linked the image up with the Class name of libraryImages and Base class is flash.display.BitmapData. • Is there a sqlite entension for PHP in RedHat Enterprise Linux 5?

  Hi, I'm trying to use some off-the-shelf PHP code in RHEL5 which requires the sqlite package (not the PDO one) but it appears this is not included in the base php5.1.6 rpm bundled with RHEL5. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, I don't have access to the installation media or RHN access (don't ask). There doesn't appear to be such a package in the CENTOS 5 distro either (and I've read that its not in the php-common rpm there either). Any ideas of where I can get this (withuot compiling my own PHP from scratch?) TIA

• Performance Impact of Generating 100's of Dynamic Methods in Ruby?

  What are the performance issues associated with generating 100's of dynamic methods in Ruby? I've been interested in using the Ruby Preferences Gem and noticed that it generates a bunch of helper methods for each preference you set. For instance: class User < ActiveRecord::Base preference :hot_salsa end ...generates something like: user.prefers_hot_salsa? # => false user.prefers_hot_salsa # => false If there are 100's of preferences like this, how does this impact the application? I assume it's not really a big deal but I'm just wondering, theoretically.

• Model's method not being recognized when called

  I'm using ruby on rails 2.3.2 and also using the acts_as_taggable_on puglin. That generated me two db tables: tags and taggings. As I didn't need anything more from those, I didn't create a Tag model, for example. Now the project is more mature, I need to create some methods for tags, so I created a Tag model with some methods in it. The model looks something like this: class Tag < ActiveRecord::Base def self.get_parent parent = Tag.find(self.parent_id) return parent end end When I call it from a controller, it won't find the method. This is the code: tag = Tag.find(tag_id) the_parent = tag.get_parent This will throw an error saying: undefined method `get_parent' for #<Tag id: 13, name: "Historia", parent_id: 12> I don't know what's wrong. Any help will be appreciated.

  I have a Person model and an Address Model: class Person < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :address accepts_nested_attributes_for :address end class Address < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :person end In my people controller I have @person.build_address in my new action. My forms builds correctly. The problem is that when I submit the form, a person record and an address record is created but they aren't linked via the address_id column in the Person table. You can rebase your branch, where instead of merging, your commit is replaced by another commit with a different parent, and your branch is moved there. while a normal merge would have looked like this: So, if you rebase, you are just losing a history state (which would be garbage collected sometime in the future).   I have a requirement to use a Fund model in my code. It will contain a fund name and fund code. In the interest of reuse I've poked around the package containing the other models used and found an existing Fund model. However the issue here is that, in addition to fund name and code, it also contains an amount. Amount isn't directly relevant in my context. So, do I: 1) Use the existing Fund model as is, ignoring the setters/getters for fund amount. 2) Put a FundDescription interface onto the existing Fund model for accessing only the information I'm interested in. 3) Make a FundDescription base class from which the existing Fund model could now extend 4) Create a whole new seperate model since the two are slightly contextually different

• C++ Typing and OOP child classes

  I'm a bit confused: If I have a base class A, and a class B which extends A, can a variable of the type A hold a value of the type B and vice versa? If yes, why? Aren't they completely different even if B is derived from A? How about type-safety? If this is possible, what things do I have to mind when taking use of this? How would this work out in terms of performance? Note: Sorry if I asked too many questions, just ignore them and just look out for those "marked" with the list decoration dot :) Also, this is not my homework. I'm a hobby programmer and have skills in scripting languages with OOP, yet I'm relatively new to OOP typing in C++.

  Hi everyone. I am making use of jQuery 1.4.4 and jQuery UI 1.8.7 in a legacy code base. I have added a few combobox() ui-widgets, these comboboxes live along side normal <select> dropdowns. I am finding it difficult to get the two elements to look the same, i.e. the unstyled <select> with it's Internet Explorer / Windows based style and the most basic jQuery UI Themed ui-widget combobox. The screenshot shows an unstyled <select> on the left and a jQuery ui-widget combobox on the right: Is it possible to make the two look the same?

• Rails Model has_many with multiple foreign_keys

  Relatively new to rails and trying to model a very simple family "tree" with a single Person model that has a name, gender, father_id and mother_id (2 parents). Below is basically what I want to do, but obviously I can't repeat the :children in a has_many (the first gets overwritten). class Person < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :father, :class_name => 'Person' belongs_to :mother, :class_name => 'Person' has_many :children, :class_name => 'Person', :foreign_key => 'mother_id' has_many :children, :class_name => 'Person', :foreign_key => 'father_id' end Is there a simple way to use has_many with 2 foreign keys, or maybe change the foreign key based on the object's gender? Or is there another/better way altogether? Thanks!

• Extending fluent nhibernate mappings in another assembly

  Hi, I'm using NHibernate with my ASP.Net MVC application. I'm writing some extensions (plugins) for my application. And I'm loading those plugin dynamically (from different assemblies). In my base application I have many entities and mappings defined (User, Group, etc...) I need to create new entities in my extensions, so i.e. I'm creating News module, so I need to create News mapping. In database News table has a foreign key to User table. Is there any way I can modify my User mapping, so it will have: HasMany(x => x.Courses) .KeyColumn("GroupId") .Inverse(); Or the only way to do it is to change code in my User class and recompile project ? I'm not NHibernate advanced user, so any help will be appreciated. TIA.

  I'm displaying a PNG with a transparent background that looks good in Windows 7, but then I run my app in XP Mode or remote desktop to a Windows XP machine and the PNG looks incorrect. I noticed that if I disable "Integration Mode" or run the app on XP without remote desktop, the image looks fine. How do I get DrawImage to render the PNG correctly in XP Mode or remote desktop? • O(N log N) Complexity - Similar to linear?

  Hey All, So I think I'm going to get buried for asking such a trivial but I'm a little confused about something. I have implemented quicksort in Java and C and I was doing some basic comparissons. The graph came out as two straight lines, with the C being 4ms faster than the Java counterpart over 100,000 random integers. The code for my tests can be found here; android-benchmarks I wasn't sure what an (n log n) line would look like but I didn't think it would be straight. I just wanted to check that this is the expected result and that I shouldn't try to find an error in my code. I stuck the formula into excel and for base 10 it seems to be a straight line with a kink at the start. Is this because the difference between log(n) and log(n+1) increases linearly? Thanks, Gav

• When is C++ covariance the best solution?

  This question was asked here a few hours ago and made me realise that I have never actually used covariant return types in my own code. For those not sure what covariance is, it's allowing the return type of (typically) virtual functions to differ provided the types are part of the same inheritance hierarchy. For example: struct A { virtual ~A(); virtual A * f(); ... }; struct B : public A { virtual B * f(); ... }; The different return types of the two f() functions are said to be covariant. Older versions of C++ required the return types to be the same, so B would have to look like: struct B : public A { virtual A * f(); ... }; So, my question: Does anyone have a real-world example where covariant return types of virtual functions are required, or produce a superior solution to simply returning a base pointer or reference?

• Error 2908 when installing assemblies into GAC

  Hi, I'm receiving 2908 (0x80131047: The given assembly name or code-base is invalid) error when running my MSI package. The problem occures when the MSI tries to deploy a component with .NET assembly into a GAC. NOTE: only assemblies with dependencies fail. The MSI is created with IS 2010. I am able to deploy the assembly manually with GACUTIL. I verified .NET Framework (all versions upto 3,5)is installed. I verified assembly properties are identical with MsiAssemblyName table properties. However, somehow I had made the installation working fine before. But when the product was moved to Visual Studio 2008 and .NET 3.0 I started facing the problem. Do you guys have any thought on this. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks much!

  I've been programming in Ruby for a while now with just the standard MRI implementation of Ruby, but I've always been curious about the other implementations I hear so much about. I was reading about Rubinius the other day, a Ruby interpreter written in Ruby. I tried looking it up in various places, but I was having a hard time figuring out exactly how something like this works. I've never had much experience in compilers or language writing but I'm really interested to figure it out. How exactly can a language be interpreted by itself? Is there a basic step in compiling that I don't understand where this makes sense? Can someone explain this to me like I'm an idiot (because that wouldn't be too far off base anyways)

  Hi, I have a has and belongs to many relation between User and Article models, and I would like to link them even if an article if not hosted on the same database then a user. For example, If an article exists at foo.com/articles/3 and a user exists at bar.com/users/1, If would like to be able to do from foo.com web interface or bar.com web interface this kind of query: a_user.articles (or an_article.users). I think this can be possible adding a field like "url" in users and articles tables. But I don't know how to process for ActiveRecord. My Article model looks like this: class Article < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :users end Is there yet some example of project using this kind of relation over internet? Many thanks

  Hi, Anyone has pointers on how to get real time US gas station feeds via webservice ? I'm trying to develop an iphone app that give users real time gas station price near their location. Currently i was wondering is there a legit government service that produce real time gas station price in the US on a daily basis? I heard about http://gasbuddy.com/ but i don't know where they get the data source from and was not sure if i should base on their data as well. On the other hand, there is a bunch of iphone apps on the apple store that show the gas price info. • In Visual Studio 2008, how can I make control+click do a "Go To Definition"?

  I know this is not strictly about programming, but it's pretty close. Anyway, in Delphi, you can hold control and click on a method to jump to its definition. In VS2008, you have to right-click and select "Go To Definition". I use this function quite often, so I'd really like to get VS to behave like delphi in this regard - its so much quicker to ctrl+click. I don't think there's a way to get this working in base VS2008 - am I wrong? Or maybe there's a plugin I could use? Edit: Click then F12 does work - but isn't really a good solution for me.. It's still way slower than ctrl+click. I might try AutoHotkey, since I'm already running it for something else. Edit: AutoHotkey worked for me. • C# Container Class

  I'm building a game in c# which allows you to script your own level, although I have come across a bit of a thought. I have a base class called "World" as an object. This was made with a simple: class World { However, when the user is scripting their level, all of the game objects will be contained in the world object. I want them to be able to do something on the lines of: World.ParentObjectName.ParentObjectProperty = "abc"; I know that the System.Windows.Forms.Panel and other classes are like containers and can have objects in them and be accessed in that kind of way... my question is how can I make a class which is like a container in which I can add objects to, and then access them with a World.ObjectName I have tried class World : System.Collections.CollectionBase, but with this method, I have to keep typing World.Item("ObjectName") Can anyone help?
