• JavaOne 2012: Camel, Twitter, Coherence, Wicket and GlassFish

  Before joining Oracle as Product Manager for WebLogic and GlassFish for Latin America, at the beggining of this year I proposed two talks to JavaOne USA that I had been presenting in Brazil for quite a while. One of them I presented last year at ApacheCon in Vancouver, Canada as well in JavaOne Brazil. In June I got the news that they were accepted as Alternate Sessions. Surprisingly enough, few weeks later and at the same time I joined Oracle, I received the news that they were officially accepted and put on schedule. Tomorrow I'll be flying to San Francisco, to my first JavaOne in the United States, and I wanted to share with you what I'm going to present there. My two sessions are these ones: Wed, 10/03, 4:30pm - CON2989 Leverage Enterprise Integration Patterns with Apache Camel and TwitterOn this one, you will be introducted to the Apache Camel framework that I had been talking about in Brazil at conferences, before joining Oracle, and to a component I contributed to integrate with Twitter. Also, you will have a preview of a new component I've been working on to integrate Camel with the Oracle Coherence distributed cache. Thu, 10/04, 3:30pm - CON3395 How Scala, Wicket, and Java EE Can Improve Web DevelopmentThis one I've been working on for quite a while. It was based on an idea to have an architecture that could be as agile as frameworks and technologies such as Ruby on Rails, PHP or Python, for rapid web development. You will be introduced to the Apache Wicket framework, another Apache project I enjoy working with and gave lots of talks at Brazilian conferences, including JavaOne Brazil, JustJava, QCon SP, and The Developers Conference. You will also be introduced to the Scala language and how to create nice DSLs to boost productiveness. And last but not least, the Java EE 6 platform, that offers an awesome improvement from previous versions with its CDI, JPA, EJB3 and JAX-RS features for web development. • Creating a Yes/No MessageBox in a NuGet install/uninstall script

  Sometimes getting a little feedback during the install/uninstall process of a NuGet package could be really useful. Instead of accounting for all possible ways to install your NuGet package for every user, you can simplify the installation by clarifying with the user what they want. This example shows how to generate a windows yes/no message box to get input from the user in the PowerShell install or uninstall script. We’ll use the prompt on the uninstall to confirm if the user wants to delete a custom setting that the initial install placed in their configuration.  Obviously you could use the prompt in any way you want. The objects of the message box are generated similar to the controls in the code behind of a WinForm. • Which one to select for my future career; Java, C#, Azure or Apex?

  Hi folks, This time, I am going to studying Masters in Computer Science in U.S.A after a week. I have been doing my B.Sc for the past three years and after my freshman year I started working on projects (in C# and very rarely in Java) for the past two years.(i.e while I was a second and third year student). Now I am in a college where all of the programming courses are going to be taken in Java only (using Eclipse) and I am going to stay in this college for 8 months on campus and then fully employed for two years in other companies as a CPT. I really love to work on Microsoft products because, for me, they are simple and easy to use and understand. My future plan is to work in Cloud computing and be a Cloud based business owner in the near future. Since the college is going to teach us and let us do every project in Java, I was confused which programming language to use that will help me and enhance me in my career, and of course I wanted to select the one I liked to do everytime. I also heard a lot about Azure (Microsoft’s ) and Apex (Salesforce.com’s cloud computing programming language). Would you please give me your advice and recommendation based on my situation? Should I have to study only Java, or should I have to study C# or Azure beside Java on my own? The reason I asked this is because, since I have no clue how Azure works and how long it will take me to know the language, I am really confused which one to select (Java Vs C# and Azure Vs Apex or if there is any popular and mostly used Cloud Computing langauge). Do you think I can get a job in cloud computing if I study Azure or Apex by my own without experience? There is also one issue I want to consider which is a short term issue is. i.e Salary. Since I have to pay my student loan, I also need to get a good job which will let me pay my loan within two years. But, as I said, my long term plan is, get experience in Cloud Computing (from programming to administrative part,i.e every area of cloud computing) and then have my own business may be within 5-10 years. • ssh + tinyproxy: poor performance

  I am currently in China and I would like to still visit some blocked websites (facebook, youtube). I have VPS in the USA and I have installed tinyproxy on it. I log in on my VPS with SSH port-forwarding and I have configured my browser appropriately. Everything works more or less: I can surf to those websites but everything is inusually slow and sometimes data transfer stops abruptly. • Stange stream of HTTP GET requests in apache logs, from amazon ec2 instances

  I just had a look at my apache logs, and I see a lot of very similar requests: GET / HTTP/1.1 User-Agent: curl/7.24.0 (i386-redhat-linux-gnu) libcurl/7.24.0 \ NSS/3.13.5.0 zlib/1.2.5 libidn/1.18 libssh2/1.2.2 Host: [my_domain].org Accept: */* there's a steady stream of those, about 2 or 3 per minute; they all request the same domain and resource (there are slight variations in user agent version numbers); they come form a lot of different IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, in blocs that belong to amazon ec2 (in Singapore, Japan, Ireland and the USA). I tried to look for an explanation online, or even just similar stories, but couldn't find any. Has anyone got a clue as to what this is? It doesn't look malicious per say, but it's just annoying me, and I couldn't find any more information about it. I first suspected it could be a bot checking if my server is still up, but: I don't remember subscribing to such a service; why would it need to check my site twice every minute; why doesn't it use a clearly identifying fqdn. Or, should I send this question to amazon, via their abuse contact? Thanks!

• Toshiba Portege M400 screen rotation not working under Windows 7 x64

  I have installed Windows 7 on my Toshiba Portege M400. This in itself was relatively tricky.* However, the button utilities aren't quite working for me. One of the buttons tries to launch the Toshiba Assist program, which doesn't appear to be available under Windows 7 for the M400, but this I can live without. More important is that the screen won't rotate as it is supposed to when you hold the "cancel" (X in a circle) button on the bezel. The PC is set to run "C:\Program Files (x860\Toshiba\Toshiba Rotation Utility\phtrot.exe". There is a "trot.exe" file in the same directory (the former appears to be to cause slightly different behaviour when rotation is done by press and hold). Neither of these programs rotates the screen either by using the buttons or from the command line. The screen is rotating normally when switching from tablet to laptop mode, so there does not appear to be an inherent problem with rotation. I'd just like to be able to use the buttons on the side of the screen to change the screen orientation. Windows XP used to have a "setrot" utility to do this, but that seems to have gone in Windows 7 Thanks for your help. *Just in case anyone comes looking for how to do this, you need to extract driver files from http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/util_raid_os2007252a.exe, which does not seem to be listed among the available files for the m400. This executable contains the SATA interface drivers that will need to be loaded by the installer before it can see your hard disk drive. It needs to be unpacked and the files copied to a USB key which they can then be loaded from in the install process. The utilities etc. for installation post windows install are all available from the Toshiba USA support website.

• Install Ubuntu on a new netbook?

  I'm planning to buy a netbook, and I am considering to install Ubuntu on it. It would mainly be used by my wife at home for web browsing and email at home (lightweight is important, hence a netbook!), and we'd occasionally bring it along on travels (mostly as digital photo dropzone). I want to use Ubuntu instead of Windows because I'm sick of all the Windows hassle and updates. I'm not concerned about Windows applications; I'd switch to native alternatives as far as possible because really only Firefox and something like Picasa are needed. I'm considering an ASUS Eee PC 1001P or an MSI Wind U100 or an Point of View Mobii II (click the links for specs; nevermind that the rest is German). I'm not in the USA. Whatever I buy will most likely have Windows 7 on it but no optical drive. I would also buy a large-ish USB stick but not an external optical drive. Should I (and can I) install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7, or remove Windows? If I remove Windows first, how would I be able to reinstall it if I change my mind? Can I make a backup? Is a recovery CD usually provided? Should I choose the regular Ubuntu, or the Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR)? Does UNR allow me to install additional applications just as easily? Note: I'm asking about Ubuntu vs. Windows; let's skip the hardware discussion for now. Edit: I'm assuming that Windows is already installed; if it isn't then I would only install Ubuntu and this question is irrelevant.

• How to setup equivalent USVIDEO.ORG DNS-Proxy on Linux

  I have a VPS in the USA running Ubuntu. I want to setup something similar to http://www.usvideo.org Basically, USVIDEO is a DNS service that allows Canadians to access American content like Hulu, Netflix, NBC, and etc (restricted by geographical IP). Here is how I think USVideo does it: Clients (PS3, XBOX, PC) specifies the DNS server(s) as specified on USVIDEO.org's website. If the DNS request is a video/audio site such as Netflix or Pandora, forward the request to a proxy. Otherwise, for all other requests, forward it to a different DNS server. If the specific video/audio URL is requested, return the address of the proxy server, which in turn relays traffic to the destination video/audio domain via the U.S. gateway so that it appears that the access is coming from a U.S. IP address. Once the DNS request has passed the U.S. IP address check, their proxy server steps out of the loop and lets the video streaming site contact you directly to start the video stream. This trick relies on the way that the video streaming sites check the country of your IP address once up front, but don't actually check the country of the destination IP address while the video is streaming. What is elegant about this solution is that a VPN Tunnel is not required to bypass geographical IP checks from certain websites. All that is required on the client side is to specify the DNS server (the VPS). If a certain site is geographically locked, just forward the traffic to a proxy, and that's it. These sites can be specified in the DNS entries, or perhaps in the proxy service to redirect the DNS request to its own proxy. I believe what I need to setup something similar is Squid Proxy, IPTables, and DNS. What I need help is how to exactly approach this? Would Squid Proxy be setup as a transparent proxy?

• Programmatically add/delete users in Exchange

  I've got the following set up: ASP.Net site that allows my internal employees to add in new hire information (no secure data, just stuff like name/address/phone) and when they submit this it goes into a database (SQL). Every few minutes a service runs that checks the database and if there are new entries it will add them into Exchange. The issue is I'm not happy with the way the service is doing things, (It's not putting address, etc in it). As I don't have the source code this I'm thinking of recreating it. My issue though is finding a starting point even. I know I'll have to create the scripts through code where the data is retrieved from SQL : Joe Smith 123 Main Street Nowhere, USA 19999 And put that into a powershell cmdlet (not sure exactly the syntax but I can get that figured out unless someone already has it) where the user is created in the Active Directory as a normal user and the mailbox is created simultaneously. From there I just need to fill out fields in Active Directory with the person's address, etc. Finally a deletion routine for when we terminate someone, however I'm sure that it will simply be a cmdlet that is easily shelled out to much like the initial one is, once I can figure out how to start that... Anyone have some good reference points or have already done it and can share?

• Trying to delete a directory stored on a WIndows server, mounted on a mac

  I am trying to delete a directory stored on a Windows 2008 R2 server, mounted on a Mac as network home (10.8.5). The directory was created by Safari and stores temporary internet files. I need to be able to delete this folder on logout from a Mac bash script. • How can I run Gnome or KDE locally in Cygwin?

  Apparently it is possible to do this using cygwin ports, as can be seen in screenshots. I followed this how-to to get apt-cygports set up, and I used it to install gnome-session. This how-to supposedly gives the commands needed to run Gnome or KDE, but whenever I try to run Gnome, a blank X-window pops up and then quickly disappears. • Melting plastic around DC-in jack in laptop

  I recently noticed that the plastic around the DC-in jack of my laptop was warped (melted) a little bit. Since I noticed, I have done some experiments, and saw that the metal tip of the charger heats up very much when I am gaming, or performing CPU-intensive work (it's so hot that i can't hold it between my fingers). When I am using Windows normally (web browsing, music, video), the tip is not hot. I tried using another charger from a compatible laptop, but its metal tip overheated as well, so the problem is not caused by the charger. I have been using this laptop for gaming for 1.5 years and I never had this problem. When gaming I always use a laptop cooler. Dust is not the problem (i cleaned out the dust), and the CPU and GPU temperatures are not higher than when I got the laptop. The only thing that is excessively hot is the charger tip. Because I bought my laptop from the USA, sending it to warranty and back would cost more than the laptop's value, so I need to fix it myself. I have googled around, and I saw that the problem might be the DC-in jack that is located on the motherboard of the laptop. I plan to take the laptop apart and see if it has become loose, and soldering it in place if it has. My questions for you are: Did anyone deal with this problem in the past? Did anyone manage to fix it? Is the DC-in jack the culprit in this case? Or is it possible for the problem to be caused by another part on the motherboard? Is there any way I can check the DC-in jack with a multimeter? What should I measure (resistance, etc)? EDIT: My laptop is a Sager NP5135 (aka Clevo B5130M). • /dev/input/uinput Device appears to be 'broken'

  I'm trying to setup Pystromo so that I can remap the keys on my Belkin N52TE gamepad. Pystromo basically captures the key strokes and then outputs the remapped keystrokes to the uinput device. However, at the moment it simply swallows the input and outputs absolutely nothing. • Persistent routes for DD-WRT PPTP VPN client

  My home network in the USA is behind a Buffalo router (G300NH) running their version of DD-WRT. I use the built-in PPTP VPN client to connect to a VPN provider in the UK. I route certain traffic over the VPN (so it has a UK source address, for various entirely legal reasons) which I achieved by following the instructions in the DD-WRT docs and my VPN provider's own instructions. I placed two commands like this in the firewall script: route add -net xxx.xxx.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 dev ppp0 route add -net yyy.yyy.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 dev ppp0 I didn't put any of the iptables rules in since it my setup doesn't seem to need them. It works like a charm. Traffic to the xxx subnets goes over the VPN, everything else goes out over my ISPs own pipes. The problem comes when the VPN drops, which it does occasionally. DD-WRT does a fine job of reconnecting it automatically, but the routes are trashed every time that happens. How do I automate the process of re-establishing my routes? I thought about static routes, but the IP address of the VPN connection is dynamically assigned (which is why I'm using dev ppp0). Many thanks, Tim

• DVD drive won't work after installing software

  DVD drive was already region-free but for some reason would not play a certain DVD as it was the "wrong region". This is the first time I've played a DVD on the drive, but I've imported a lot of CDs before and they always worked fine, even CDs bought from the USA (I live in the UK). To get around this, I downloaded a piece of software called "DVD Region Killer". (Clicking the link won't start the download, so go ahead and check it.) After this, the drive isn't recognised. It won't show up in "My Computer", and when I insert a disc it will start to whir but not take action, i.e. iTunes won't recognise that I have put a CD in. In the Device Manager, the drive shows up with a caution-sign. The device status reads: Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) Disabling, uninstalling and reinstalling does not help. Clearly the software download is the issue, but it is difficult to remove. The only files I can find in Program Files are: C:\Program Files (x86)\Elaborate Bytes\DVD Region Killer which contains a changelog and a HTML document which has no info on uninstalling. It doesn't show up on "Add or Remove Programs", or even as a background process when I press ctrl-alt-del. Apparently it has no interface as such, and can be accessed by an icon in the system tray, (see review in link) but I don't see the icon. If it helps to know, I have a Dell Inspiron running Windows 8 64-bit, and the model of the DVD drive is: MATSHITA DVD+-RW UJ8C2 Thanks in advance.

• Browser says "Waiting for www.xyz.com" for a very long time

  When I load my website (hosted with Ipage). The browser often takes an incredible long time saying "Waiting for www.xyz.com ..." before any elements of the site actually appear. After this "Waiting for" process, the text, images and everything else actually load quite fast. I contacted my host with my tracert result and they said they optimized my website database and increased the memory available to PHP on my account to 64 Mb.They also said they have checked the issue by accessing my website and found that it is loading fine without any slowness. It seems to be a temporary issue. Please try to access your website with different browser and network. I tried different browsers and networks but this "Waiting for" process always takes too long. My website is http://www.surreyextra.com/ . It's Wordpress and BuddyPress. I'm in the UK while Ipage host is placed in the USA, can this potentially be a problem? I have tried a number of optimizations, like minifying my CSS and JS files and use catching but the problem hasn't improved. So is it my host's fault, should I contact them again?

• wget crawling search results of news website

  I am trying to crawl the search results of a news website using wget. The name of the website is www.voanews.com. After typing in my search keyword and clicking search, it proceeds to the results. Then i can specify a "to" and a "from"-date and hit search again. After this the URL becomes: http://www.voanews.com/search/?st=article&k=mykeyword&df=10%2F01%2F2013&dt=09%2F20%2F2013&ob=dt#article and the actual content of the results is what i want to download. To achieve this I created the following wget-command: wget --reject=js,txt,gif,jpeg,jpg \ --accept=html \ --user-agent=My-Browser \ --recursive --level=2 \ www.voanews.com/search/?st=article&k=germany&df=08%2F21%2F2013&dt=09%2F20%2F2013&ob=dt#article Unfortunately, the crawler doesn't download the search results. It only gets into the upper link bar, which contains the "Home,USA,Africa,Asia,..." links and saves the articles they link to. It seems like he crawler doesn't check the search result links at all. What am I doing wrong and how can I modify the wget command to download the results search list links (and of course the sites they link to) only ?

• Power issues Foxconn Barebones kit

  I have a Foxconn R20D2 bought about a year and a half ago. It ran fine for a while and then around last summer it started having power issues. I chalked it up to changes in electric current due to the overwhelmed grid when people turn on their AC units, but this problem has stayed for all year, shutting off randomly, shutting off when i turn on a vacuum and similar problems. Now that its summer again, the box basically sits there all day cycling itself, and now has gotten to the point it tried to boot and after 3 seconds, fails, shuts off and tried again. I know its power related, it runs opensuse linux and there are never any shutdown logs or anything of that sort. As the weather got hotter i noticed it happening more and more, and it most often happened in the morning, i presume as people woke up and turn on the AC. The power supply is a Chennel well technology co LTD model DSL-150. 150W max output. Its an intel atom dual core, with 2 sata drives, no CD/floppy etc, recently upgrades from 2 to 4gb of ram. It runs at 104 degrees Fahrenheit all the time almost. Any way i can test the power supply or anything else to try to fix it? Im a software guy, not hardware so im at a complete loss here, thanks for all assistance you can provide! EDIT: The switch on the back that says 230 or 115 is set to 230. If im in the USA, could that be causing the problems?

  Hi guys. Someoen from china with two different ip is downloading the same big file from my server. Their ip are: 122.89.45.210 60.210.7.62 They requesting this file and downloading more than 20 times per minute. What Can I do to prevent this? (I am on gentoo with root access) And WHY they do this to a site that doesn't have nothing to do with china ? ADD1: Other ips: 221.8.60.131 124.67.47.56 119.249.179.139 60.9.0.176 ADD2: the stupid thing is they are requesting only 1 single file lol. Or they want that file removed (tho i don't see why) Or they are pretty stupid ADD3: Situation is getting worse. IP are spreading from other countries too (usa and korea if www.geobytes.com/iplocator.htm it's right) And now they are requesting another file. ADD4: it seems after they realized i removed that file they stopped attacking me. I will monitor the situation. They started again after a sleep of 3-4 mintues with the same file (lucky me). My current ratio from varnishstat is: cache_hit=271 cache_miss=926 I'm kindly asking this because I've googled almost every site related to this theme, but 99.9% of configurations don't work because of outdated code. Details of my set-up: I use Varnish on port 80, Apache on port 81, PageCache as Magento varnish module, APC for PHP speed and Memcached for dynamic caching. Load speed is about 1.5s on home-page (Pingdom.com average results) USA ping & 2.5s Europe. Servers are located in Toronto, Canada.   How do I disable the Windows + U hotkey in Windows XP? Alternatively, how do I stop the utility manager from being active? The two are related. The utilty manager is currently providing a potential security hole and I need to remove it[1]. The system I'm developing uses a custom Gina to log in and start a custom shell. This removes most Windows Key hotkeys but the Win + U still pops up the manager app. Update: Things I've tried and don't work: NoWinKeys registry setting - this only affects explorer hotkeys; Renaming utilman.exe - program reappears next login; Third party software - not really an option, these machines are audited by the clients and additional, third party software would be unlikely to be accepted. Also, the proedure needs to be reasonably straightforward - this has to be done by field service engineers to existing machines (machines currently in Russia, Holland, France, Spain, Ireland and USA). • Can I charge USB devices from a powered hub that isn't connected to a PC?

  This will probably sound familiar to most of you... In my home, we have a whole bunch of devices that can be charged via USB (two iPhones, a BlackBerry, an iPod Touch, etc ad nauseam). We also have a bunch of USB chargers, each of which has a single USB port on it. I'd like to have something permanently connected to AC power with at least 4 USB ports on it, so we can just plug devices in and don't need to go looking for a free outlet. So here's the question: if I buy a powered USB hub, will that do the job even if I don't connect it to a PC? Ideally if you have a hub that you can personally verify will be suitable, let me know the manufacturer and model :-) Thanks in advance!   I am trying to delete a directory stored on a Windows 2008 R2 server, mounted on a Mac as network home (10.8.5). The directory was created by Safari and stores temporary internet files. I need to be able to delete this folder on logout from a Mac bash script.
