• Exchange 2007: Auto reply message to senders (server side)

  Hi everyone and marry Christmas, I’ve to create an auto-reply for some of the users in my organization where, when a person sends an E-mail to e.g. [email protected] is faced with an automatically auto-reply with some message “closed during the holidays. We are back at… etc. etc. etc.”. I’ve tried to create a Transport Rule on our Exchange server but the only option I can find in the actions-window is to reply with a “Bounce message to sender with enhanced status code” but I guess that is not the precise action I’m looking for. How can I set up a server-side auto-reply, apply it to only a fixed number of users in my organization and create a message to the senders (which is outside the organization)? Sincerely Mestika

• Converting legacy GRUB menu entries to GRUB 2

  I would like to change an entry for a solution to boot from CD from legacy grub (looks like title bla bla bla) to an entry to a format compatible to grub 2 (the one that looks like menuentry "bla bla bla" {. The original legacy GRUB entry is as follows: title Boot From CD/DVD Drive kernel /boot/grub/memdisk.din initrd /boot/grub/sbootmgr.dsk Is there any sort of conversion rule to change this to something like the example I've put here on the next line? • SQL Azure Federation - how much data before performance benefits?

  To avoid premature optimization, I don't want to implement SQL Azure's Federation too early. Is there a rule of thumb for how much data a table would need to have before seeing performance benefits from sharding? I know there won't be a precise answer as there are too many variables to consider, especially with much of SQL Azure's resources being hidden/unknown. To put it into several, more concrete examples, would Federation improve performance in any of the below table scenarios: 100,000 rows (~ 200 MB) 1,000,000 rows (~ 2 GB) 10,000,000 rows (~ 20 GB) 100,000,000 rows (~ 200 GB) For the sake of elaboration, we can assume this is the largest table that would be federated, which consists of order details, which is joined to an orders table with a 'customer_id' foreign key, which would be the distribution key. This is a fairly standard multi-tenant, CRUD order entry system, with a typical assortment of reporting needs (customer order totals by day/month/year, etc).

• Pxe boot ubuntu server - corrupt packages

  I have set up a cobbler pxe boot server and managed to get centos5.8 to fully automatically install. Unfortunately with Ubuntu 12.04-server-i386, it stops mid-way through with a message stating that packages are corrupt. I tried following this tip to unzip the Packages.gz file which results in an empty Packages file with nothing in it. Other people suggested doing a touch command which essentially does the exact same thing, an empty Packages file. That results in me getting a different message that states: Couldn't retrieve dists/precise/restricted/binary-i386/Packages. This may be due to a network..... Does anyone know how to work around this issue? Hitting continue before having made the tip/workaround resulted in ubuntu installing fine, but I need to be able to provide no manual input.   Our application runs on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise. On this server, we have both ntpdate and ntp. How to enable and disable the NTP service on-demand? I tried # sudo update-rc.d -f ntp remove/default and # sudo update-rc.d ntp enable/disable commands, but when I reboot server the ntp service starts running! I suspect ntpdate is starting ntp service on reboot. I removed ntpdate package from one of my experimental server, then ntp didn't start on reboot after issuing: # update-rc.d ntp disable Is there a way to control this? or is there way to permanently disable ntpdate?

• Tail the filename, not the file

  In UNIX (OS X BSD to be precise), I have a "tail -f" command on a log file. From time to time I want to delete this log file so I can more easily review it in my text editor. I delete the file, and then my program recreates it after new activity. However, my tail command (and anything else that was watching the old log file) doesn't update; it's still watching the old, deleted log file. I think I understand why this is (file names simply being pointers to blocks of file data). I'd like to know how I can work around this. Ideally, my tail command (and anything else I point to the file) would be able to read the data from the new file when the file name has been deleted and recreated. How would I do this?

  I have 2 Exchange 2010 servers each with a Mailbox Database. I have also setup a Hardware Load Balancer (KEMP LoadMaster 2200 to be precise) to load balance the CAS role access. My HLB has an IP of 192.168.1.100. I've setup the DNS A record for mail.mydomain.com to point to 192.168.1.100. However when I try to set the RpcClientAccessServer on a mailbox database using Set-MailboxDatabase "My Mailbox Database" -RpcClientAccessServer mail.mydomain.com I get an error saying Exchange server "mail.mydomain.com" was not found. Please make sure you have typed it correctly. + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [], ManagementObjectNotFoundException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : 4082394C Any ideas?

• Juniper J4350 out of order

  I have got two (2) Juniper routers J4350 that are out of order : All the interfaces are down (leds on the interfaces don't ligthen, ping dosen't respond) No output on the console port (even when booting) I've tried to reset the router (holding the RESET CONFIG button on the front panel during 15 seconds) and nothing happened, even while booting the device I've opened the router to check the fans. I've removed some dust and nothing has changed. I wanted to precise that the leds on the front panel are all on: The POWER led is green The STATUS led is red The ALARM led is on and is orange The HA (High Availablity) is on and orange as well I have found nothing on the Internet to solve this problem... • Is an Ethernet point to point connection without a switch real time capable?

  In automation and control, it is commonly stated that ethernet can't be used as a bus because it is not real time capable due to packet collisions. If important control packets collide, they often can't keep the hard real time conditions needed for control. But what if I have a single point to point connection with Ethernet, no switch in between? To be more precise, I have an FPGA board with a giga-Ethernet port that is connected directly to my control PC. I think the benefits of giga Ethernet over CAN or USB for a p2p connection are huge, especially for high sampling rates and lots of data generation on the FPGA board. Am I correct that with a point to point connection there can't be any packet collisions and therefore a real time environment is given even with ethernet? Thanks in advance! ~fsb

• Is there a way to submit a batch of commands to a Cisco router and have them execute from the router?

  I need to change the configuration of a remote (6 hours' drive) client's Cisco 871 (IOS 12.4.15T) from my location because of some new internet service at his location. To be more precise, I need to change the default route, ip address of the outside interface (Fa4) and disable the PPPoE setup there. Unfortunately, doing any of this will (obviously) break the connection to the router. I do not have an out-of-band management modem set up (I know, I know). Is there any way to enter the commands I need to have run and have them execute one after the other, from a file on flash:? I have never tried anything like that before. Essentially a DOS-style batch file is exactly what I need. Nothing like it seems to be out there except using kron to execute CLI commands, but that is specified here as only taking EXEC commands, not configuration ones. Is there hope, or do I travel?

  To be precise System has reached the maximum size allowed for the system part of the registry. Additional storage requests will be ignored. WinXP/64 running fine for 2 years (no /3Gb switch), just started happening. I used ntregopt and the problem went away at least temporarily. However, looking before and after in Windows\System32\Config I see that my System file was reduced only by 10% and is still 170+ Mb. According to my rather extensive research with Google, this is "huge" and should be more like 10-20Mb. The system runs fine. There is a System.bak that is only 11Mb and has the date when I ran ntregopt. That's what I know. Now my question: Is there anything I can do to reduce or rebuild the System registry hive given the above info?

• How to open first n bytes of file in hexadecimal and edit it?

  I want to edit some .avi videos (cut them, to be precise) in VirtualDub but it failed to open the files. They are encoded in xvid, which I have installed, and play in KMPlayer without problem. Also, all other xvid videos can be opened and cut just fine by VirtualDub. I suspect there's something wrong in the first few bytes of these particular videos (the magic number?). This means I have to open the offending files in a hex editor and make some necessary adjustments to the header. Problem is, they are very large ( 3 GB each) and take very long time to open in UltraEdit. Can UltraEdit open just the first few bytes of a file? If not, do you know of an application that can do that? Edit: I'm using Windows XP.

• Can I disable certificate error/warning in Firefox/Chrome/Internet Explorer?

  Exactly as the title says; I don't mind which browser, I just want to type "https://........" and see the page normally without any certificate error, knowing that I might risk myself by allowing an invalid certificate! It seems like every browser producer thinks he knows better than me, the Super User !! =) Now, does anyone know how to remove warning/error related to this? In any of these browsers (Firefox/Chrome/Internet Explorer/[you-may-suggest])? Oh, and don't advise me a workaround like adding to exceptions. Please don't mention that. • Screen goes grey in Remote Desktop Connection from windows 7 to ubuntu server

  I recently got a 64 bit ubuntu server based on Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 "Precise Pangolin". However I can't seem to connect to it properly from my windows 7 64 bit machine. I can get to the login screen for ubuntu, and it seems to succeed in logging in, but then the screen just goes grey before anything comes up. (too low rep to post a picture) I installed xrdp on the server and attempt to connect using the standard windows Remote Desktop Connection program. I also ran the following 2 commands on the ubuntu machine to try get it to run but it was no help. echo "gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d" > ~/.xsession and sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

  I need a free software for Windows (with gui or command line) that does incremental backup copying all files and storing changed or deleted files in a directory named like last change date (or a progressive number). To be more precise: D:\ is my Data drive E:\ is my Backupdrive. If i want to backup all my data from D:\: E:\d_lastbackup\ will contain a plain copy of all the files and folder content (no compression or archiving, same files attributes) of D E:\d_20090822\ will contain all files (with their full path) that are changed or deleted in the last version (since the previous one) E:\d_20090820\ will contain all files (with their full path) that are changed or deleted in the last version (since the previous one) and so on... I had a software working prefectly with an old USB harddsik by Maxtor, but it works only on that device. Any suggestion?

  I recently upgraded from the previous LTS Ubuntu to Precise and now mysql refuses to start. • How can I check the location of perl and CPAN files?

  I constantly have to set up new servers for an employer of mine for an exact purpose of his, and as such they all have to be set up in exactly the same way. So I've created a script in PHP that I run from my own box to automatically send over all the relevant files, compile everything, run updates, and everything else. However, for some reason these brand new servers come with perl, which is fine, but they have perl installed in different locations. This makes it a pain for me to copy over Config.pm for CPAN without going in and finding the location manually. Is there perhaps some command I'm unaware of that will hunt down the precise location?   I'm trying to install the official Passenger (and Nginx) packages from Phusion on an Ubuntu 12.04.3 server. I have the following in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/passenger: deb https://oss-binaries.phusionpassenger.com/apt/passenger precise main Even after running apt-get update there is no passenger package found by apt. I did verify that the package info appears in /var/lib/apt/lists/oss-binaries.phusionpassenger.com_apt_passenger_dists_precise_main_binary-amd64_Packages but at this point I'm at a loss as to why the package isn't available via apt-get. There are some packages (libapache2-mod-passenger, passenger-docs) that are available. These packages seem to also exist in universe, but apt-cache show lists both locations.

• Is Page-Loading Time Relevant?

  Take this (ServerFault) page for instance. It has about 20 elements. When the last of these has loaded, the page is deemed "loaded"--but not before. This is certainly the protocol used by our testing service (which is among the small group of well-known vendors that offer that sort of service). Obviously this method is based on a clear, definite endpoint--therefore it's easy to apply w/ concomitant reliability. I think it's also the metric used by the popular Firefox plugin, 'YSlow.' For my employer's website, nearly always the last-to-load items are tracking code, tracking pixels, etc., so from the user's point of view--their perception--the page was "loaded" well before it had actually loaded based on the criterion used by our testing service (15-20% is a rough estimate). I'm sure i'm not the first person to consider this nor the first to wonder if it is causing micro-optimization while ignoring overall system-level, or user-perceived performance. So my question is, are there are other more practical (yet still reasonably precise) measures of page loading time?

  IIS noobie here. I have an intranet website hosted by IIS (6? I'll check after the weekend) that is set to Windows Authentication. Whenever there is some sort of authentication failure, the website gives the user a windows account sort of password prompt and doesn't display a 403 (or 401 or whatever) page unless the user cancels the prompt. However, entering a password is never, ever a use case for this website. Is there a way to turn off the password prompt and just display the error page? Bonus: are there any good hooks for this precise point for code that would do diagnosis and logging?

Before there was: I will not acquiesce in on it. I over precise post. Expressly the title attracted me to be familiar with the sound story. and before that Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up! It is obviously computer-generated (well, not this last one). The comments are from Anonymous, so they're not trying to legitimate a user on Blogger. Is this a spam attack? What might its goal be? Or are they just testing my blog to see if I reject or not? Does this kind of "attack" have a name?
