  • continuous hard disk access - slowing down my machine

    I find from the hard disk access LED on the front of my machine that the hard disk is being accessed more often and probably because of that, my machine is quite slow. The machine becomes unresponsive even when the load as seen from w command is around 1 or so. My desktop is optiplex 360 dell machine running Ubuntu 10.04. My questions are: How to quantify hard disk access and how to see if it is more than "normal" ? If it is more than normal, what are my solutions ? thanks suresh

  • Netbook (Samsung N220) on Ubuntu 10.04 slows down WiFi for other computers

    I encountered a really odd problem with my new netbook. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Samsung N220 Mito. So far everything worked fine. Now I tried the machine for the first time in our work group where we have a wifi (with internet access) for all laptops. The wifi is controlled by a computer running Suse 9.3 which provides a DHCP server and imposes a firewall. At the moment there is only a macbook in the wifi, where no problems with the internet or wifi connection are encountered. Now coming to my actual problem: In addition to the macbook i connect the Samsung N220 to the Wifi. Problem: My download speed is for some reason limited to 70KB/s max. This is neither a limitation of the server/website i browse on, nor a configuration of the netbook: at home i have 500KB/s download speeds. Furthermore, it is not a default limitation for "untrusted" or "new machines" in the wifi, as for instance other new laptops get full speed internet with our wifi. Problem: Once the Samsung N220 is generating traffic in the wifi, the wifi is slowed down dramatically for all other machines: I run a ping to the router from the macbook. The ping times with the N220 ideling are 2-6ms. When I start downloading or browsing in the web with the N220 the ping speed drops to 800ms. Vice versa, when the macbook is generating the traffic the ping of the N220 to the rooter stays constant at around 2-6ms. So clearly, it is some problem originating from my netbook or maybe its treatment in the wifi. Thanks for any help

  • Screen flicker -> Severe System Slowdown?

    I'm using a Dell D830 laptop, and over the last few weeks it's been developing a very irritating screen flicker problem that leads to the system slowing down almost to the point of unusability. At seemingly random times (no commonality between how long the system has been running, what I was doing, what applications were open, etc.) my screen (I use two external LCD's with the laptop closed in a dock) flickers for a moment, then the system becomes incredibly slow. The screen redraws painfully slowly--almost like what you might expect to see with generic graphics drivers installed--and the entire system is maddeningly unresponsive. The only thing that seems to be able to correct the issue is a restart. I've checked the event logs and nothing out of the ordinary is there, and definitely nothing that's common to all of the events. I'm running XP Pro SP2. Any ideas?

  • How to figure out if hardware is slower than it should be?

    I'm pretty sure that my computer is slower than it should be and it has been that since a got it. For instance it lags a lot in Counter Strike Source. And yes I've installed all the newest drivers. And it doesn't matter what OS I uses. I've tried both Windows, Linux and FreeBSD and it's slow in all of them. So what could this be? Is there something wrong with the hardware? And if, then what could it be?

  • Why can't I index a SUBST'd drive in Windows7?

    I've got a SUBST for a folder to drive letter P: I have noticed that exploring these folders from P: is now INCREDIBLY slow, taking up to a minute sometimes to show files. I'm showing them as general files and not thumbnails, so it's not that. Looking at the original folder in explorer is lightning fast. I've checked the indexing options and indeed the folder where my files are stored is checked as indexed. I can see my P: drive in the list, but clicking on the checkbox won't do anything. It's not even checkable. Does anyone have any clues as to how I can fix this? (Running Windows 7 just to be clear).

  • HTTP transfer speeds start fast then slows to a crawl

    We just got a new dedicated 1 gigabit server running IIS. The CPU is 15% or less, the RAM (4 GB total) has 3 GB unused... We are pushing 110 mbits per second... Speeds are really slow.. And, if fact, here's how it happens: We connect, and then the speeds are really fast, and quickly decline to 40 kBps or less. What's going on? It seems the server just wont go above 120 mbits per second. The files are all very large. 50 MB to 500 MB... Could this be a factor? Again, CPU, RAM, UI responsiveness when accessing remotely all seem fine.

  • Why is it taking longer to log into windows7?

    I installed windows 7 and it was file for weeks. Recently i created a 2nd user account, installed important updates, installed 1 game and AFAIK that is it. What did it? All three of theses doesnt seem they would cause logging in to take longer (maybe important updates did it?). It takes 90+ seconds to get a fully loaded desktop when it use to take ~30 second. Looking at msconfig and starup i see vmware, dtools, launchy and live messenger (msn). I know i had three of these and maybe all 4 during the last install how can i find out what made loggin in slow? -edit- i also installed visual studios rc1 team instead of beta2 and msvs 2008. But i hardly doubt msvs rc1 did it.

  • Ruby New dnssd (bonjour zeroconf) service not appearing while browsing

    Here is my simple zeroconf (aka bonjour dnssd) browser. If I have other services running when I start the browser I can see it (the 'resolved to' line prints to the screen). However, if I start up another service while this browser is running it will not appear. It just waits at the top of the block so I would expect it to enter the block once a new service is registered.   • iPhone - Browsing iPhone files through computer

    I want to be able to send files from an iPhone app to a computer. What would be the easiest way of doing this? I've made simple server client programs before, but in those, the client has always needed to connect to the server before being able to receive messages from it. There is an app for the iPhone called iSimulate, where you put a server on a Mac (the iPhone simulator), and then you use the iSimulate app of an iTouch or iPhone to send touch events to the server. This app does not require you to type in an ip-address. Instead it presents a list of available computers that have this server up and running. How exactly is this being done? Can a server broadcast a message over a network, w/o anyone being connected to the server? How does that work? How does a client listen for that broadcast?   • How can I clear *old* browsing data from Google Chrome Linux, while keeping more recent data?

    I can find plenty of information on how to clear Google Chrome's recent browsing data, in various periods, as well as clearing all browsing data. But I want to clear old browsing data—say for a start, anything over two months old. (I'm trying to save space on a crowded laptop.) Does anyone know any principled way to do this, or shall I just dive into ~/.config/google, start removing likely-looking files, and hope for the best. I run Google Chrome on Debian Linux.

  • XCode File Browsing doesn't open files!

    Previously when I browsed source code files using Xcode's file browser (located on left side), clicking on a source file would open it in the right window. I must've accidentally changed some setting that stops this behavior -- now single clicking on any file doesn't do anything at all. I'd really like it to go back to the old behavior of opening the file. Any ideas? This behavior is driving me crazy. To open a source file I have to double-click and open in a separate window.

    Hi, I have an ajax web application(asp.net). some of users report the a problemt that when they work sometimes by system ( and pages who have ajax calls) their connection to server will intrupt and just a blank page they will see. they can't browse any other page on my site while they close all open browsers and reopen site. I currently already have the current intent filter: <activity android:name=".activities.EpisodesListActivity" android:theme="@android:style/Theme.NoTitleBar"> <intent-filter> <category android:name="android.intent.category.BROWSABLE"></category> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT"></category> <action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW"></action> <data android:scheme="http"></data> </intent-filter> </activity> Now as you can guess, this is an evil intent, as it wants to open whenever a page is requested via http. However, when I ad the line: <data android:mimeType="application/rss+xml"></data> to make it: <activity android:name=".activities.EpisodesListActivity" android:theme="@android:style/Theme.NoTitleBar"> <intent-filter> <category android:name="android.intent.category.BROWSABLE"></category> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT"></category> <action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW"></action> <data android:scheme="http"></data> <data android:mimeType="application/rss+xml"></data> </intent-filter> </activity> The application no longer claims to be able to run rss files. Also, if I change the line to: <data android:mimeType="application/xml"></data> It also won't work (for generic xml file even). So what intent filter do I need to make in order to claim that the activity supports rss. (Also, bonus points if you can tell me how I know what URL it was the user opened. So far, I've always sent that information from one activity to the other using extras). Thank you for your help
