• Drupal 6 sign-up booking, reservation system with payments

  Hi Guys. I have tried to find out the working solution for implementing simple events booking system in Drupal 6 (limited places, payment, signing up/buying few places for firends). System does not have to be big but easy to customize events to reserve/book places for. I was surprised of not finding much complete solutions. Most of the time I was directed to use modules like: Date, Calendar, Singup, Singup Ubercraft integration, Ubercraft. Does anybody of you has tested it? Is it working and customizable or you would suggest other alternatives on the subject? Wiil appreciate any recomendations.

• Database indexes - what should they be

  Most of my database tables have a clear unique index through which lookups are done 90% of the time but I am a bit unsure on this one - I have a table which keeps track of user rating totals for items in my database, I now want to add another table, to track individual ratings with an ip address column to make sure no one can rate something twice. Since I can see this becoming a big, high use table it is important to optimize it correctly. (MYSQL table) This table will have the following fields: rating_id(always - unique), item_id (always - not unique), user_id (optional - not unique), ip_address (always - not unique), rating_value(always - not unique), has_review(bool) Now I envisions 90% the queries going something like this: When a user rates something - select where item_id = x and ip_address = y, (if rows = 0) insert rating When in user account pages - select where ip_address = x or username = y Now none of the fields searched on are unique, can I still use them as indexes (for example item _id and ip_address), can I have two indexes and will this still improve performance over a non indexed table?

  Hello Everybody, I am very new to TDD, not yet started using it. But i know that we have to write test first and then actual code to pass the test and refactor it till good design. My concern over TDD is that where does it fit in our SDLC. Suppose i get a requirement of making order processing system. Now, without having any model & design of this system, how can i start writing test. Shouldn't we require to define the entities & its attribute to proceed. If not, is it possible to develop big system without any design. I am really very confused over it. Can anyone help me to start TDD. Thanks in advance.

• Resources for learning how to better read code

  Hi, I recently inherited a large codebase and am having to read it. The thing is, I've usually been the dev starting a project. As a result, I don't have a lot of experience reading code. My reaction to having to read a lot of code is, well, umm to rewrite it. But I need to bring myself up to speed quickly and build on top of an existing system. Do other people have techniques they've learned to absorb a code base? At this point, I'm just reading through the code. I've tried generating UML diagrams using UModel. They're so big they won't print cleanly and when I zoom in, I really do lose the perspective of seeing all the relationships. How have other people dealt with this problem?

• Design pattern for mouse interaction

  I need some opinions on what is the "ideal" design pattern for a general mouse interaction. Here the simplified problem. I have a small 3d program (QT and openGL) and I use the mouse for interaction. Every interaction is normally not only a single function call, it is mostly performed by up to 3 function calls (initiate, perform, finalize). For example, camera rotation: here the initial function call will deliver the current first mouse position, whereas the performing function calls will update the camera etc. However, for only a couple of interactions, hardcoding these (inside MousePressEvent, MouseReleaseEvent MouseMoveEvent or MouseWheelEvent etc) is not a big deal, but if I think about a more advanced program (e.g 20 or more interactions) then a proper design is needed. Therefore, how would you design such a interactions inside QT. I hope I made my problem clear enough, otherwise don't bother complain :-) Thanks

• Problem with Juggernaut and transparent wmode in Adobe AIR

  Hi, I am trying to use juggernaut in Adobe AIR application, however the big issue with this is that the juggernaut flash file should have wmode parameter set to 'transparent'. This is a bit of a problem for juggernaut because it seems that it doesn't work with that parameter included. The interesting part is that it is working under Linux on all browsers and in air application, but on Windows it's working only with Safari all other browsers including the AIR application are not even connecting to the juggernaut server. So the question is, what is the cause of this and if anyone had similar problem I would be interested to hear about solutions or workarounds. Thanks, Peco

• How to install older Android SDK in Eclipse

  I'm working at the moment at a simple app in eclipse for android. Just receiving and sending data, and using the camera API. I've set the minSDKversion to 8, because I think that has the widest user base. But at the beginning of the project eclipse was asking me which target SDK version I would use, and because I had just one installed (the latest 4.0.3) I've took this. Now I'm asking me if it wouldn't be wiser to install a lower SDK, like Android 2.2, because it would be not that big (compared to the 4.0.3) and my app would not have included all the fancy new features, which are not used in any way?! Or is this complete nonsense I'm talking here, and just should take my 4.0.3 SDK? When not, how can I install a lower version? Help -> SDK Manager is not showing old SDKs...

• Is there an easy way to replace a deprecated method call in Xcode?

  So iOS 6 deprecates presentModalViewController:animated: and dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:, and it replaces them with presentViewController:animated:completion: and dismissViewControllerAnimated:completion:, respectively. I suppose I could use find-replace to update my app, although it would be awkward with the present* methods, since the controller to be presented is different every time. I know I could handle that situation with a regex, but I don't feel comfortable enough with regex to try using it with my 1000+-files-big app. So I'm wondering: Does Xcode have some magic "update deprecated methods" command or something? I mean, I've described my particular situation above, but in general, deprecations come around with every OS release. Is there a better way to update an app than simply to use find-replace?

• Why does C++ linking use virtually no CPU?

  On a native C++ project, linking right now can take a minute or two, yet during this time CPU drops from 100% during compilation to virtually zero. Does this mean linking is primarily a disk activity? If so, is this the main area an SSD would make big changes? But, why aren't all my OBJ files (or as many as possible) kept in RAM after compilation to avoid this? With 4Gb of RAM I should be able to save a lot of disk access and make it CPU-bound again, no?

• Is PNG the most economically sound file format to store pictures in?

  I am looking for an economically sound solution to store pictures long time. I read about the PNG file format that it has superior characteristics compared to JPEG, namely in these categories: no patents, no licenses, no royalities no quality loss yet compressed I have a lot of big ESP's from PhotoShop that contain tons of metadata, like layers and color profiles that I don't need to store (those were handy for the designer, when he worked with it). I want to convert these images without that hidden data, to a new target file format. Another side condition to my question is that the target file format has to be displayable in the browser. So I guess my options are limited anyway: GIF, JPEG, PNG. Am I missing something or is PNG the best fit for my case?

A quick wikipedia search shows: RPC: Remote procedure call (RPC) is an Inter-process communication technology that allows a computer program to cause a subroutine or procedure to execute in another address space (commonly on another computer on a shared network) without the programmer explicitly coding the details for this remote interaction. Web Service: Web services are typically application programming interfaces (API) or web APIs that are accessed via Hypertext Transfer Protocol and executed on a remote system hosting the requested services. Web services tend to fall into one of two camps: Big Web Services[1] and RESTful Web Services. I am not quite clear what the real difference between the two things. It seems that one thing could belongs to RPC and is kind of web service at the same time. Is Web Service a higher level representation of RPC?

• SQL Compare-Like tool for Oracle?

  We're a .NET team which uses the Oracle DB for a lot of reasons that I won't get into. But deployment has been a bitch. We are manually keeping track of all the changes to the schema in each version, by keeping a record of all the scripts that we run during development. Now, if a developer forgets to check-in his script to the source control after he ran it - which is not that rare - at the end of the iteration we get a great big headache. I hear that SQL Compare by Red-Gate might solve these kind of issues, but it only has SQL Server support. Anybody knows of a similar tool for Oracle? I've been unable to find one.

• Asynchronous database update in Django?

  I have a big form on my site. When the users fill it out and submit it, most of the data just gets dumped to the database, and then they get redirected to a new page. However, I'd also like to use the data to query another site, and then parse the results. That might take a bit longer. It's not essential that the user sees these results right away, so I was wondering if it's possible to asynchronously call a function that will handle this, and then return an HttpResponse from my view like usual without making them wait? If so... how? Any particular libraries I should look at?

I want to use a private repo for my private project. This isn't a commercial project or a big project. I also found http://www.projectlocker.com but the user interface is so poor. So, I want to use something like codaset or github repo, for free at least 1 user and 100 MB git repo.

• second sorting with php usort

  So Ive got a pretty big array of data and need to sort them by two criteria. There is variable $data['important'] and $data['basic']. They are simple numbers and I am using uasort to sort $data firstly by important and then by basic. So Important | Basic 10 | 8 9 | 9 9 | 7 7 | 9 The usort function is a simple public function sort_by_important($a, $b) { if ($a[important] > $b[important]) { return -1; } elseif ($b[important] > $a[important]) { return 1; } else { return 0; } } How can I re-sort the array to the second variable and keep the Important ordering? • Read random lines from huge CSV file in Python

  I have this quite big CSV file (15 Gb) and I need to read about 1 million random lines from it. As far as I can see - and implement - the CSV utility in Python only allows to iterate sequentially in the file. It's very memory consuming to read the all file into memory to use some random choosing and it's very time consuming to go trough all the file and discard some values and choose others, so, is there anyway to choose some random line from the CSV file and read only that line?   hi there, I bumped into a case where I need a big (=huge) python dictionary, which turned to be quite memory-consuming. However, since all of the values are of a single type (long) - as well as the keys, I figured I can use python (or numpy, doesn't really matter) array for the values ; and wrap the needed interface (in: x ; out: d[x]) with an object which actually uses these arrays for the keys and values storage. I can use a index-conversion object (input -- index, of 1..n, where n is the different-values counter), and return array[index]. I can elaborate on some techniques of how to implement such an indexing-methods with reasonable memory requirement, it works and even pretty good. However, I wonder if there is such a data-structure-object already exists (in python, or wrapped to python from C/++), in any package (I checked collections, and some Google searches). Any comment will be welcome, thanks.

• What is the best way to embed controls in a list/grid

  I have a table of about 450 rows that I would like to display in a graphical list for users to view or modify the line items. The users would be selection options from comboboxes and selecting check boxes etc. I have found a listview class that extends the basic listview to allow for embeding objects but it seems kind of slugish when I load all the rows into it. I have used a datagridview in the past for comboboxes and checkboxes, but there was a lot of time invested in getting that up and running...not a big fav of mine. Would you (and why) hire a foreigner, which experience is documented in CV and portfolio, which can communicate in english (with grammar mistakes, but still)? I am writing in the name of all these guys looking for great opportunities abroad, living in countries which do not give you any opportunities at all. Is it real, to be hired like a programmer (PHP, Ruby, Python, C#) in country like UK, USA, Nederland, Sweeden or even Germany, if you're a foreigner? Please response in two categories: a) foreigner with engineer degree, zend certificate, few open source projects b) foreigner without any degree, with nice portfolio, and few big projects created Also, does First Certificate in English aka FCE matter for you ?
