• Printing JTables without formatting of the original component

  I'm writing an application which utilises tables which can be printed if the user so desires and I wish to print a JTable filled with data, except I haven't been able to find an option to remove the formatting; the printed tables looks like it does in the GUI (based on the system theme) which is making the table less readable and using excess ink. I wish to print the same data with clear formatting. Is there a way to do this straight from a JTable or is my best option simply to print to a file and have the use printer from there. Currently it functions through a viewer which gives the user some options for printing, and then it goes to the system's printer.

• Setting the Cursor Position in a Win32 Console Application

  How can I set the cursor position in a Win32 Console application? Preferably, I would like to avoid making a handle and using the Windows Console Functions. (I spent all morning running down that dark alley; it creates more problems than it solves.) I seem to recall doing this relatively simply when I was in college using stdio, but I can't find any examples of how to do it now. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  Suppose I have an autolocker class which looks something like this: template <T> class autolocker { public: autolocker(T *l) : lock(l) { lock->lock(); } ~autolocker() { lock->unlock(); } private: autolocker(const autolocker&); autolocker& operator=(const autolocker&); private: T *lock; } Obviously the goal is to be able to use this autolocker with anything that has a lock/unlock method without resorting to virtual functions. Currently, it's simple enough to use like this: autolocker<some_lock_t> lock(&my_lock); // my_lock is of type "some_lock_t" but it is illegal to do: autolocker lock(&my_lock); // this would be ideal Is there anyway to get template type deduction to play nice with this (keep in my autolocker is non-copyable). Or is it just easiest to just specify the type?

• Type patterns in Haskell

  I'm trying to compile a simple example of generic classes / type patterns (see http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/users_guide/generic-classes.html) in Haskell but it won't compile. Any ideas about what's wrong with the code would be helpful. According to the documentation there should be a module Generics with the data types Unit, :*:, and :+: but ghc (6.12.1) complaints about Not in scope: data constructor 'Unit' etc. It seems like there's a package instant-generics with the data types :*:, :+: and U but when I import that module (instead of Generics) I get the error Illegal type pattern in the generic bindings {myPrint _ = ""} The complete source code is import Generics.Instant class MyPrint a where myPrint :: a -> String myPrint {| U |} _ = "" myPrint {| a :*: b |} (x :*: y) = "" (show x) ++ ":*:" ++ (show y) myPrint {| a :+: b |} _ = "" data Foo = Foo String instance MyPrint a => MyPrint a main = myPrint $ Foo "hi" and I compile it using ghc --make Foo.hs -fglasgow-exts -XGenerics -XUndecidableInstances P.S. • What is the safest way to pass strings around in C?

  I have a program in C using Solaris with VERY ancient compatibility it seems. Many examples, even here on SO, don't work, as well as lots of code I've written on Mac OS X. So when using very strict C, what is the safest way to pass strings? I'm currently using char pointers all over the place, due to what I thought was simplicity. So I have functions that return char*, I'm passing char* to them, etc. I'm already seeing strange behavior, like a char* I passed having its value right when I enter a function, and then the value being mysteriously gone OR corrupted/overwritten after something simple like one printf() or an malloc to some other pointer. I was thinking maybe declaring a local char[] inside each function, using strcpy() immediately, and then eventually returning a pointer where char *returnval = strdup(localchar[]); This seems...sloppy. Can anyone point me in the right direction on a simple requirement?

  As the question states, what exactly are the implications of having the 'implicit declaration of function' warning? We just cranked up the warning flags on gcc and found quite a few instances of these warnings and I'm curious what type of problems this may have caused prior to fixing them? Also, why is this a warning and not an error. How is gcc even able to successfully link this executable? As you can see in the example below, the executable functions as expected. Take the following two files for example: file1.c #include <stdio.h> int main(void) { funcA(); return 0; } file2.c #include <stdio.h> void funcA(void) { puts("hello world"); } Compile & Output $ gcc -Wall -Wextra -c file1.c file2.c file1.c: In function 'main': file1.c:3: warning: implicit declaration of function 'funcA' $ gcc -Wall -Wextra file1.o file2.o -o test.exe $ ./test.exe hello world

• JavaScript OnClick Handler Not Invoking

  I'm calling a javascript function in an inline onclick like so: <a href="#" onclick="removeAttribute('foo', 'bar');">Some Link</a> When I click on the link, though, nothing happens. I have other links (to other functions) tied to onclicks that work fine elsewhere on the same page. All links to this "removeAttribute" function fail. There are no errors in Firebug, and the onclick event handler is being invoked - but stepping into the removeAttribute function ends up, for some reason, somewhere in jQuery.js. At no point does removeAttribute ever get called. If I do: javascript:removeAttribute('foo', 'bar'); in Firefox's address bar. The function is called successfully. Anyone seen this?

  I know how to override an object's getattr() to handle calls to undefined object functions. However, I would like to achieve the same behavior for the builtin getattr() function. For instance, consider code like this: call_some_undefined_function() Normally, that simply produces an error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> NameError: name 'call_some_undefined_function' is not defined I want to override getattr() so that I can intercept the call to "call_some_undefined_function()" and figure out what to do. I don't find the syntax which will allow me to pass the array of arrays to the second function... Could you please help? • I am looking for an actual functional web browser type control for .NET, maybe a C++ LIBRARY#$??$?

  I am trying to emulate a web browser in order to execute JavaScript code and then parse the DOM. The System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser object does not give me the functionality I need. It let's me set the headers, but you cannot set the proxy or clear cookies. Well you can, but it is not ideal and messes with IE's settings. I've been extending the WebBrowser control pinvoking native windows functions so far, but it is really one hack on top of another. I can mess with the proxy and also clear cookies and such, but this control has its issues as I mentioned. I found something called WebKit .NET (http://webkitdotnet.sourceforge.net/), but I don't see support for setting proxies or cookie manipulation. Can someone recommend a c++/.NET/whatever library to do this: Basically tell me what I need to do to get an interface to similar this in .NET: string FetchBrowserParsedHtml(Uri url, WebProxy p, int timeoutSeconds, byte[] headers, byte[] postdata); void ClearCookies(); I am not responsible for my actions.

• Overwriting a core Wordpress function - should work but it doesn't

  I'm trying to overwrite a core Wordpress function (found in media.php) using add_filter() in my theme's functions.php file. This should work accord to the blogs that I've come across, but for some reason I see no change whatsoever. #override what WP is trying to do to scaling images by default function my_image_hwstring($width, $height) { $out = ''; #if ($width) # $out .= 'width="'.intval($width).'" The way I'm doing it is correct (I think) but isn't working as expected. Totally hung up on this and appreciate any responses. This is a weird one!

  I'm having a tough time figuring out how to instantiate a 2D array of pointer objects. Here is how I'm doing it: Pieces* chessBoard[9][9]; When I want to set it to an actual object pointer, I'm doing the following: chessBoard[1][1] = new Rook(p1Rook); Rook is a class that inherits attributes from the Pieces class and p1Rook is a char variable set to 'R'. This class also implements virtual functions (not pure virtual) from Pieces such as move() or getPiece() that are unique to the particular chess piece. However, when I compile my program, I get the following error: ChessBoard.cpp:69: error: expected type-specifier before ‘Rook’ ChessBoard.cpp:69: error: cannot convert ‘int*’ to ‘Pieces*’ in assignment Can someone please explain what I should change to get rid of this rather annoying persistent error? I would appreciate it.

• How can I upload a file to a Sharepoint Document Library using Silverlight and client web-services?

  Most of the solutions I've come across for Sharepoint doc library uploads use the HTTP "PUT" method, but I'm having trouble finding a way to do this in Silverlight because it has restrictions on the HTTP Methods. I visited this http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd920295(VS.95).aspx to see how to allow PUT in my code, but I can't find how that helps you use an HTTP "PUT". I am using client web-services, so that limits some of the Sharepoint functions available. That leaves me with these questions: Can I do an http PUT in Silverlight? If I can't or there is another better way to upload a file, what is it? Thanks

How do I apply the same to dynamically loaded elements as well? I am using Prototype Library. • Help using the Office Interop for Word and Outlook 2007 in VB.NET

  I need to start utilizing the interop in my programs to automate several functions in Word and Outlook and I was checking if anyone knew a good place to start. My ultimate goal is for my program to kick off a mail merge, create several different files and save them accordingly, then e-mail the different files to different people based upon who needs what. • In SQL Server merge replication, how does reinitializing work?

  I have set up a pull subscription to a merge publication in SQL Server. I use parameterized row filters on some tables. This works fine with the initial synchronization - just the rows using the filter arrive in the replicated (client) database. However, at some later point I'd like to be able to synchronize the replicated database again from the server and have new rows that match the parameterized row filters appear on the client database. The doucmentation seems to indicate that I can call Reinitialize() to do this. However, when I do try this and Synchronize again, I get an error saying that the script 'snapshot.pre' cannot be applied to the database. I've inspected the script and can see why - it's trying to drop some functions are used by the tables in the database. It would appear that for Reinitialize() to work it requires that the database be blank. Am I misunderstanding something here? Is there a way to make this work?

• Why use event listeners over function calls?

  I've been studying event listeners lately and I think I've finally gotten them down. Basically, they are functions that are called on another object's method. My question is, why create an event listener when calling the function will work just fine? Example, I want to call player.display_health(), and when this is fired, the method player.get_health() should be fired and stored so that display_health() has access to it. Why should I use an event listener over simply calling the function? Even if display_health() were in another object, this still doesn't appear to be a problem to me. If you have another example that fits the usage better, please let me know. Perhaps particular languages don't benefit from it as much? (Javascript, PHP, ASP?)

• How to flush data in php and disconnect user but keep the script alive

  This is a trick question, while developing a php+ajax application i felt into some long queries, nothing wrong with them, but they could be done in background. I know that there's a way to just send a reply to user while throwing the real processing to another process by exec(), however it dosen't feels right for me, this might generate exploits and it's not pratical on making it compatible with virtual servers and cross platform. PHP offers the ob_* functions although they help on flushing the cache, but the user will keep connected until the script is running. I'm wondering if there's an alternate to exec to keep a script running after sending data to user and closing connection/thread with apache, or a less "dirty" way to have processing data sent to another script.

  I am learning functional programming style. From this link http://channel9.msdn.com/shows/Going+Deep/Brian-Beckman-Dont-fear-the-Monads/, Brian Beckman gave a brilliant introduction about Monad. He mentioned that Monad is about composition of functions so as to address complexity. A Monad includes a unit function that transfers type T to an amplified type M(T); and a Bind function that, given function from T to M(U), transforms type M(T) to another type M(U). (U can be T, but is not necessarily). In my understanding, the language implementing monad should be type-checked statically. Otherwise, type errors cannot be found during compilation and "Complexity" is not controlled. Is my understanding correct?

• How do you use Exslt.dyn (especially the 'evaluate' method) in Umbraco?

  I am trying to execute the string contained in an XSL variable. Umbraco has hooks for several Exslt pieces, but it seems the Exslt.dyn (Exslt.dynamic) is not one of them. How do you add it in? Acceptable methods (in order of preference: Writing your own XSLT extension (possibly using existing Umbraco code for Exslt Dynamic). Uploading the XSL from http://www.exslt.org/dyn/functions/evaluate/index.html into Umbraco. Modifying the Umbraco source to add it (possibly using existing Umbraco code for Exslt Dynamic). The reason I mention Exslt Dyanmic is because some Umbraco XSLT sources show a reference that I am assuming existing in some versions of Umbraco. I cannot find it in the source code, however. I'm looking for features like configurable at runtime policies updateable at runtime, read from other data sources than a security.policy file Thread-aware, e.g. different policies per Thread Higher-level policies, e.g. "Disable network functions, but allow JDBC traffic" Common predefined policies, e.g. "Allow read-access to usual system properties like file.encoding or line.separator, but disallow read-access to user.home" Monitoring and audit trace logging, e.g. "Log all file access, log all network access going NOT to knownhost.example.org" Blocking jobs "requesting" a permission until an administrator grants permission, letting the thread/job continue ... I'm pretty sure that application servers (at least the commercial ones) have their own SecurityManager implementation or at least their own policy configuration. I'm wondering if there is any free project with similar requirements.
