• Trouble upgrading OSX, because HD doesn't use GUID Partition Table Scheme

  So I have a intel-based macbook with osx 10.5 and I'm trying to upgrade to 10.6, but when I run the upgrade 'install' I quickly get to a page where I am supposed to 'Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X' and there is only the one hard drive, so it is auto selected, and below that I see a warning message and the only button available is the 'Go Back' button. The warning message says: "Macintosh HD" can't be used because it doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. Select the disk, choose the Partition tab, select the Volume Scheme and then click Options. So I followed the above instructions, and I got to the last step, where I'm supposed to click the 'Options' button, the problem is that I cannot click that button, it is disabled.. So what am I supposed to do?

• What is asloader.exe and why does it want to run elevated?

  I have Vista 64-bit ultimate on my home computer, with accounts for each family member. Most are administrators but I have one kid with a plain user account. When she logs in she gets a prompt that asloader wants to run but needs administrator. I gather that this has something to do with either the ASUS mobo (P6T Deluxe V2) or the ATI graphics card (Sapphire 4890 OC). Can anyone explain what asloader does, and suggest how I might configure something to suppress the prompt my kid gets? Thanks.

• Why isn't the Spring AOP XML schema properly loaded when Tomcat loads & reads beans.xml

  I'm trying to use Spring's Schema Based AOP Support in Eclipse and am getting errors when trying to load the configuration in Tomcat. There are no errors in Eclipse and auto-complete works correctly for the aop namespace, however when I try to load the project into eclipse I get this error: 09:17:59,515 WARN XmlBeanDefinitionReader:47 - Ignored XML validation warning org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: schema_reference.4: Failed to read schema document 'http://www.springframework.org/schema/aop/spring-aop-2.5.xsd', because 1) could not find the document; 2) the document could not be read; 3) the root element of the document is not . • Cisco Anyconnect Issue on HTC HD2

  Hello, We've just got a HTC HD2 handset through (UK - T-mobile); and we've installed the Cisco Anyconnect client. It connects ok but then after a few seconds disconnects, then reconnects. It then keeps cycling through in this way, and at no point can we even attempt to sync Exchange! Our ASA 5510 reports; Group User IP <149.254.217.2 SVC Message: 17/ERROR: Reconnecting to recover from error.. And from the phone log; 10:56:03Debug Function: CSocketTransport::getTransportMTU File: ..\IPC\SocketTransport.cpp Line: 1058 Invoked Function: CNetInterface::GetTcpIpMTU Return Code: -32571377 (0xFE0F000F) Description: NETINTERFACE_ERROR_INTERFACE_NOT_AVAILABLE Does anyone have any advice on why it's constantly disconnecting? The phone log does suggest a lack of service; but the phone can browse the net, make calls, etc and appears to have good signal throughout. We did try the Anyconnect software on a Windows 7 PC which worked fine, no drop outs. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Myles

• Usability Problems with RDP and Dual Monitors

  Hi All, When I RDP into a win2k3 machine with the dual mon settings, I've noticed that there are a couple of usability problems: 1) Dialog boxes are popped up right in the middle of both monitors making it hard to read. 2) Windows are maximized to both monitors instead of just one. 3) The task bar spans across two monitors. (This is just a matter of preference. I prefer my task bar to span across just my primary monitor) I know that Splitview is a good tool that solves all these problems, but there's a price-tag to it. To be fair, $39 for a tool like this is not too bad at all. However, before I suggest this tool to my team and manager to get the licenses for it, are there any free alternatives that will solve the 3 above problems? -Steve

• Apache+Tomcat VS Stand Alone Tomcat or GlassFish

  Hi, I am setting up a Debian server to serve Java web applications. I have done quite a bit of research for several weeks now. Tomcat's web site says it is better to use stand alone Tomcat for speed if you are not clustering. However, I have seen many people suggest that using Apache + Tomcat gives you better security and protection against attacks. Please assume that the process will be running on port 80 as an unprivileged user. I would assume that if you are running a firewall in front the server, Tomcat should be fine. If, however, you just want to run an exposed webserver using Linux firewall, what is the best option? Or maybe someone can recommend another open source web server. I am trying to keep the solution as light as possible as these webapps will be running in containers. All opinions welcome and valued. Thanks, Tony Z

• Microsoft Word 2007 opening all docs with field codes toggled off

  Recently, something changed with my Microsoft Word 2007 installation/preferences on Windows XP, such that whenever I open a word document, all the field codes are displayed raw instead of as their expanded value. For example, my header reads: My Name { TITLE \* MERGEFORMAT } Version { REVNUM \* MERGEFORMAT } But, if I copy and paste it here, it reads expanded: My Name My Doc Title Version 42 I expect to see the copy and paste version directly inside Word, I can work around this by right clicking on each such field and choosing toggle field codes, however, I never had to do that before, as previously, the document opened with all such field codes expanded. Another example is the Table of Contents which shows as: { TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u } Instead of the full table of contents. I searched the word options dialog, but could not find anything that appeared relevant. Please suggest how to restore the old behavior.

• In WPF, how do I get a command in a Control Template to bind to a property in a parent?

  I am relatively new to WPF and sometimes it makes my head explode. However, I do like the power behind it, especially when used with the MVVM model. I have a control template that contains a button. I use that control template inside of a custom control. I want to add a property on the custom control that will bind to the command property of the button inside the control template. Basically, it is a combo box with a button to the right of it to allow a user to pop up a search dialog. Since this control could appear on a usercontrol multiple times, I need to be able to potentially bind each control to a different command (Searh products, search customers, etc). • Asterisk - Trying to use call files to create a conference call between two dynamic numbers

  I'm trying to setup an Asterisk system that will allow me to create a conference call between two dynamic numbers. It seems I can use 'call files' to make Asterisk initiate the call without needing an incoming call - http://www.voip-info.org/tiki-index.php?page=Asterisk+auto-dial+out This example seems to be what I'd need: Channel: SIP/mytrunk/12345678 MaxRetries: 2 RetryTime: 60 WaitTime: 30 Context: callme Extension: 800 Priority: 2 I can generate this file with some scripting language and then place it into the Asterisk Call File folder. The problem I'm having is: How do I call out to two numbers and join them in a conference call? The MeetMe plugin/extension seems to be what I need in terms of conference calling, I'm just unsure as to how I'd use the two together and join them. Also, is it possible to have multiple 2-person conference calls at the same time? Is setting this up as simple as setting aside X amount of 'channels' in the meetme.conf?

• Upgrade from Debian Lenny to Squeeze with apt-get

  I just upgraded my system from Lenny to Squeeze following the steps posted here. I followed all the steps using apt-get (in the upgrade from Etch to Lenny i used aptitude as suggested) and the upgrade went fine. In the daily routine I use aptitude to maintain the system up to date and I really like the automatic handling of unused packages, so if I install package A that depends on B when I remove A, B is removed too keeping my system clean. My question is the following: do apt-get and aptitude share the automatic handling of packages? I don't think so, because I found a lot of packages not marked as Auto in aptitude after the upgrade via apt-get. Am I right? How can I fix this in automated way if the answer is yes?

• Wireless networking on Gnome on Ubuntu 9 / 10

  So here's my problem: I have some netbooks (ASUS eee, and ACER Aspire Ones) that I've been tasked to set up as kiosk machines, locked up tight for normal users. I am a command-line, server man, so this gnome malarkey is all a bit new to me. I found a lovely 9.04 kiosk livecd that installs and runs exactly as I want it to, but I can't get the wireless working. So I dropped on a full 10.4 distro, and wireless works straight out of the box (so hardware is good) - all I needed to do was right-click on the network connection icon, enter my SSID and password (WPA/WPA2) and away it went, perfect. Further investigation on 10.4 distro shows that /etc/networking/interfaces is virtually empty (just auto lo iface lo inet loopback in it), even after I have set up the wireless thru the gnome taskbar applet (is that the right word?). So where does gnome / ubuntu store the network settings to bring the blasted wireless connection up, and what do I need to do on the kiosk version to get wireless running?

• Windows server reboot loop - uninstalling hotfixes

  After installing 3 updates, my system is stuck in a reboot loop. I am using server 2008 r2. I have tried deleting pending.xml from the windows directory, so pelase don't suggest that. I tried dism /image:d:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions which completed successfully but did not solve my issue I then tried: dism /image:d:\ /Remove-Package /PackageName: and sucusfully removed one of the 3 updates. The two updates that are left are not listed with the dism get-packages command, but are listed with the get-apppatches command. I cannot find a way to uninstall them with dism however. So my question is, how can I manually uninstall specific updates or hotfixes from within the winre environment?

• Blocking yandex.ru bot

  I want to block all request from yandex.ru search bot. It is very traffic intensive (2GB/day). I first blocked one C class IP range, but it seems this bot appear from different IP ranges. For example: spider31.yandex.ru - 77.88.26.27 spider79.yandex.ru - 95.108.155.251 etc.. I can put some deny in robots.txt but not sure if it respect this. I am thinking of blocking a list of IP ranges. Can somebody suggest some general solution.

• How to connect to a SOCKS Proxy from an iPhone/iPod Touch?

  I like to surf securely and privately via a SOCKS proxy which I created via SSH tunneling, on the Mac. I used the SSH client on my Mac to achieve this. Then I thought, since the iPhone OS is essentially Mac OS, the same trick might work also on the iPhone. I managed to create a SSh tunnel on my iPhone via the Terminal (iPhone's Terminal). (Yes, it's jail-broken) ssh -D [port] [email protected] At this stage my iPhone is SOCKS proxy. However, there doesn't seem to be a way in the iPhone networking preference panel to specify a SOCKS proxy. Someone suggest creating a Proxy Auto-Contig (PAC) file to workaround this, but that sounds complicated. Any ideas how to make iPhone use it's own SOCKS proxy?

• Windows 7 Not Recognizing Any Hardware, Linux Recognizing Hardware

  I have a new desktop computer with two SSDs: one running Linux Mint 15 (SSD1), the other running Windows 7 (SSD2). My mint runs perfectly - USB wireless adapter is recognized, SSD2 (connected by SATA) is recognized and accessible through the filesystem, Ethernet works, etc. However, my Windows 7 is not recognizing any of these devices - even plugging in a regular ethernet cable doesn't work. It seems that it's not recognizing any network adapters, and it also doesn't recognize SSD1, connected to the mainboard by SATA. I've installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled Windows multiple times, but the problem persists. I used the Windows 7 CD to install Windows on a machine previously, and that time around, I didn't have any problems, which leads me to suspect that this might be a hardware issue, specifically with the mainboard. My mainboard is an MSI-7641 model, the 760GM-P34 FX. It uses an AMD Chipset and an AMD processor. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, and how to fix it?

• SQL Server crashes when remote query fails

  Setup: I have a linked server setup on SQL Server 2005 which is pointing to an Oracle DB. The linked server has RPC enabled. Problem: When a query throws an exception on the remote server (Oracle DB) the SQL Server instance crashes. The logs say that the crash was due to some problem with the RPC call. Is there a way in which I can prevent the entire server to collapse but also use RPC over my linked server. EDIT: Event Log SQL Server is terminating because of fatal exception c0000005. This error may be caused by an unhandled Win32 or C++ exception, or by an access violation encountered during exception handling. Check the SQL error log for any related stack dumps or messages. This exception forces SQL Server to shutdown. To recover from this error, restart the server (unless SQLAgent is configured to auto restart). • Charging a laptop battery, without a laptop.

  I have an old-ish laptop that only works on AC power because the battery is old and no longer holds a charge. I live in Christchurch New Zealand where there has recently been a number of very large earthquakes. During one of these earthquakes my laptop was thrown from my desk to the floor and now does not respond at all when the AC adapter is connected. Given that the laptop is not responding to power, is there another way I could charge a replacement battery for it as I don't currently have funds to repair the AC adapter on the box. My research would suggest that this isn't possible as chargers need to take into account the specifics of the model of battery being charged

• How can I bind the nested viewmodels to properties of a control

  I used Microsoft's Chart Control of the WPF toolkit to write my own chart control. I blogged about it here. My Chart control stacks the yaxes in the chart on top of each other. As you can read in the article this all works quite well. Now I want to create a viewmodel that controls the data and axes in the chart. So far I'm able to add axes to the chart and show them in the chart. But I have a problem when I try to add the lineseries because it has one DependentAxis and one InDependentAxis property. I don't know how to assign the proper xAxis and yAxis controls to it. Below you see part of the LineSeriesViewModel. • How should I force-enable BIND's persistent cache, or Unbound's persistent cache

  I am trying to run a local DNS server on my home computer so that I can both increase DNS lookups speed and reduce bandwidth use, so that both my laptop and my PC can do lookups faster. I have got BIND 9 running very smoothly, there is only one simple problem, and that being the fact that BIND is not a persistent DNS cache, and if I restart its service, the whole cash would be wiped out. So, is there a way that I could make BIND9 keep its cache after system restart? Also, which one is better Unbound or BIND? Which one would you suggest? Does Unbound DNS have a persistent cache or can it be enabled?

• Windows XP SP3 - Upgrade - No longer part of workgroup

  When I woke up this morning I decided to have a really lousy day. For a long time I have been telling auto updater to remind me later about installing SP3. But not this morning... It looked good, until I tried to access my NAS. Can't connect, can't see it, nothing. The other computers can see it, so it is my PC. Oh, and they can no longer see me. It turns out the only thing I can see is the printer. So if you know what wonderful thing Microsoft decided to change during the upgrade (oxymoron in my opinion), I would be grateful. Short of turning on all of the services I have tried so many things, and rebooted so often, that I am just sick of it.

Two of them are requesting wpad.dat file too rapidly at a pace of 30 times per second. 10.1.14.246 - - [02/Jun/2014:09:07:18 +0200] "GET /wpad.dat HTTP/1.1" 302 302 10.1.14.141 - - [02/Jun/2014:09:07:18 +0200] "GET /wpad.dat HTTP/1.1" 302 302 I don't know whether this is a problem from performance perspective, (the server is powerful enough to handle this) but the problem is it clogs up the access_log file. It grows about 1GB per week. Clients run Win7Pro. What could cause this behavior? What can be done to stop it? I have shortened log rotate window as a temporary workaround to prevent /var fill up. • Most basic, low power home surveillance system

  I am thinking of setting up a simple but effective surveillance system for my house that is: Very low powered (preferably no PCs left running out of stand-by mode) Cheap. When motion (or sound) is detected, I would like it to: Send an email/phone alert to me Record and upload video to the web (in case they steal the camera) So I imagine a system where I leave a netbook PC in stand-by mode and have it woken up by a motion detector. This initiates software to send alerts and periodically upload recorded video to the web. The software part is easy for me, but I'm not really a gadget-man so I'd like some advice on using a motion sensor of some sort to wake up the PC. Does anyone have some good advice? • SQL Server crashes when remote query fails

  Setup: I have a linked server setup on SQL Server 2005 which is pointing to an Oracle DB. The linked server has RPC enabled. Problem: When a query throws an exception on the remote server (Oracle DB) the SQL Server instance crashes. The logs say that the crash was due to some problem with the RPC call. Is there a way in which I can prevent the entire server to collapse but also use RPC over my linked server. EDIT: Event Log SQL Server is terminating because of fatal exception c0000005. This error may be caused by an unhandled Win32 or C++ exception, or by an access violation encountered during exception handling. Check the SQL error log for any related stack dumps or messages. This exception forces SQL Server to shutdown. To recover from this error, restart the server (unless SQLAgent is configured to auto restart).
