• Hurricane Season 2010 Starts

  Here we are at the start of another hurricane season.  As with past years, I have been preparing.  Last year I had the house painted with a high-quality paint, giving the stucco its best waterproofing possible.  I have a few cracks to patch with elastomeric patching material.  I will paint it to match the house later.  I also need to clean out the anchors for the lower angle brackets and reattach them.  I had removed the brackets for painting. You can read all my past hurricane entries here.  The predictors are promising a busy season.  We have heard that one before, so I put little credence in long range press releases.  Other than that we are pretty much ready.  I have a few new plans I will blog about later, but for now we get to listen to our daily thunderstorms outside.

• Work with 64-bit VM in Windows 7

  I attended a Microsoft Office and SharePoint 2010 HOL 1 day workshop last week and wanted to setup a VM to try the new features in my own laptop. The presenter in the workshop implicitly mentioned a tool called VirtualBox (because it's not a MS product?) but I have no clue what it is at that moment. Until today, I saw a very useful blog and thanks to Guy and Rolly. • SharePoint Search Problem: The crawler could not communicate with the server.

  This one was not easy to solve ... Error: The crawler could not communicate with the server. Check that the server is available and that the firewall access is configured. Context: Some pages were not crawled (giving the above error) and, what is worse, all the sub content of that site was not crawled either! (the pages were the homepages of the site) Solution:The pages that could not be crawled due to this error contained a custom web part. This web part used default credentials for a given action. During crawling, the SP_Search account tried to perform this action but did not have the appropriate rights. Developers can start developing applications using this build of Java SE 8 on an ARM device, such as the a Raspberry Pi. • Fixing a broken toolbox (In Visual Studio 2010 SP1)

  I was recently running into a situation where every time I opened Visual Studio 2010 SP1, the following message would appear for about 60 seconds or so: "Loading toolbox content from package Microsoft.VisualStudio.IDE.Toolbox.ControlInstaller.ToolboxInstallerPackage '{2C98B35-07DA-45F1-96A3-BE55D91C8D7A}'" After finally get fed up with the issue, I started researching it and decided that I’d share the steps that I took to resolve it below: I first made a complete backup of my registry. I then removed the following key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\Packages\{2c298b35-07da-45f1-96a3-be55d91c8d7a}] I went to the following directory: C:\Users\Your Name Here\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ and created a folder called bk and moved the .tbd files to that folder (they are hidden so you will have to show all files). I then removed the .tbd files in the root directory. I then launched Visual Studio 2010 SP1 again and it recreated those files and the problem was gone.   I blogged about the difference and similarities between AWS CloudFormations and Oracle Assembler builder to package your software stack for deployment/provisioning to the cloud. However, these tools do not deal with software stack versioning and configuration management. This is where tools like Chef and Puppet come into play. Puppet and Chef points of interest: 1. Can be used in any cloud environment (rackspace, private cloud etc). 2. There is a debate between which is better. I am not going to get into this debate other then to say Puppet is more mature. 3. • Socialengine installation error

  I'm trying to install Socialengine (clean install, empty database, legal license key), but I ran into this error message at Step 3 of the installation: Step 3: Setup MySQL Database Mysqli statement execute error : Prepared statement needs to be re-prepared I found a troubleshooting artice about "Bug in MySQLi Extension Causes Apache 500 Error" at http://www.socialengine.net/blog/article?id=161&article=Bug-in-MySQLi-Extension-Causes-Apache-500-Error I uploaded the fixed file and try to install again, but it still doesn't work. It terminates at Step 3 again with the same error message. I would be very grateful if you could help me. Thanks.

• reasonably priced registrar for obscure tlds like .tt

  I'm looking to buy a .tt domain name, however the only registrars I can find want from between $500 to $3000 for one domain. Considering I can buy a .com for around $10 a year, I consider that not very reasonable! It's going to be for a personal blog site (non monetised), hence why I'm not willing to spend over $500 a year on it. Does anyone know of any registrars that sell obscure tld's such as .tt for reasonable price? As for my definition of "reasonable", I understand it's not a .com and I'm going to have to pay more, but $3000 is just silly! In my opinion I'd say anything under $100 is reasonable.

• July 7th - Java 7th launch

  Java 7 is around the corner and Oracle is hosting a multi-city launch event on July 7th called "Java 7, Moving Java Forward". This event will be held simultaneously in Oracle HQ (Redwood Shores, CA), in Sao Paulo, Brazil and in London UK to celebrate to almost-ready version 7 of Java, the first one in five years! In addition to the live event and the ability for you to attend in person if you're in one of those cities, many Java User Groups are planning Java 7 meetings on the same day or soon after, so check your favorite JUG's upcoming meetings. • Where should a programmer explain the extended logic behind the code?

  I have developed a few quantitative libraries in C# where it is important to understand not only the classic information that goes with the XMLDoc comments (which contains basic information with the method signature) but also the mathematical formulas being use within the methods. Hence I would like to be able to include extended documentation with the code, which could contain, for example Latex formulas, graphs, and so on. Do you think such information should be included in the API documentation? Or should it be included in a dev blog for examples? Are there common tools that are usually used for this kind of purposes?

• Flash Retirement - HTML to be "the one"

  I will update this blog post as we get closer to the retirement of the Flash portal. As you might have read the support.oracle.com  flash site will be replaced with what you see in supporthtml.oracle.com,  once we get the rest of the features and functions ported over to the html site. The HTML site is written using Oracle's ADF stack. So we are now pretty much 100% eating our own dog food.  More details to follow.
