  • Grub won't boot windows after update from 11.10 to 12.04

    - by Holger
thanks for your time and reading this, here's the deal: i upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 and everything worked out until i rebooted, i had 11.10 sucessfully running as a dual boot with windows vista. when i rebooted, my GRUB was shot to hell, what ever option i selected it said partion not found or something similar... booting into a live version on a thumb drive and running bootrepair from there fixed the issue... but only for ubuntu, when i try to boot into windows it only goes back to GRUB. i'm not at home, and heres a list of what i have here with me... 1 4gb thumb drive, empty 1 8gb thumb drive, windows vista installer bootable 1 old laptop, the one i try to save, optical drive is not existent 2 Mbps internet connection can you help me get back into my windows without having to reinstall windows? or at least show me a way how to use my illustrator through a virtual machine or something? here's my grub cfg # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub # ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ### if [ -s $prefix/grubenv ]; • Vim hanging after parsing .vimrc (even a blank one) file on Solaris 10

    - by Seamus
    Hello all, I am having a problem with vim 7.2 hanging (for about 10 seconds) after it parses the .vimrc file. I had a similar issue in the past with tcsh on linux, but it was resolved by setting TERM to xterm-color. The same does not resolve the issue here. Any idea what may be causing this? $ env USER=redacted LOGNAME=redacted HOME=/home/redacted PATH=redacted MAIL=/var/spool/mail/redacted SHELL=/bin/tcsh TZ=redacted LC_COLLATE=C SSH_CLIENT=redacted SSH_CONNECTION=redacted SSH_TTY=/dev/pts/11 TERM=dtterm HOSTTYPE=sun4 VENDOR=sun OSTYPE=solaris MACHTYPE=sparc SHLVL=1 PWD=/home/redacted GROUP=redacted HOST=redacted REMOTEHOST=redacted QUOTA_CHECKED=1 WHOAMI=redacted HOSTNAME=redacted EDITOR=vim PRINTER=redacted INFOPATH=/software/gnu/gcc/2.8.1/sun4os5.10/info:/software/gnu/sun4os5/info:/software/gnu/emacs/20.3.1/sun4os5/info:/software/gnuish/sun4os5/info:/usr/local/gnu/info MANPATH=/software/gnu/gcc/2.8.1/sun4os5.10/man:/software/gnu/sun4os5/man:/software/gnu/emacs/20.3.1/sun4os5/man:/opt/rational/clearcase/doc/man:/usr/openwin/man:/usr/share/man:/usr/local/man:/usr/dt/man:/software/gnuish/sun4os5/man H_ARCH=sun4 H_ARCHOS=sun4os5 H_ARCHOS_SUB=sun4os5.10 H_OSTYPE=SUNOS H_OSREV=51000 T_ARCH=sun4 T_ARCHOS=sun4os5 T_ARCHOS_SUB=sun4os5.10 T_OSTYPE=SUNOS T_OSREV=51000 X11HOME=/usr/local/x11/sun4os5 OPENWINHOME=/usr/openwin LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/dt/lib:/usr/openwin/lib MOTIFHOME=/usr/dt XINITRC=/usr/openwin/lib/Xinitrc GCC_REV=281

  • How can I write a makefile to auto-detect and parallelize the build with GNU Make?

    - by xyld
Not sure if this is possible in one Makefile alone, but I was hoping to write a Makefile in a way such that trying to build any target in the file auto-magically detects the number of processors on the current system and builds the target in parallel for the number of processors. Something like the below "pseudo-code" examples, but much cleaner? all: @make -j$(NUM_PROCESSORS) all Or: all: .inparallel ... build all here ... .inparallel: @make -j$(NUM_PROCESSORS) $(ORIGINAL_TARGET) In both cases, all you would have to type is: % make all Hopefully that makes sense.

  • GNU make: should -j equal number the number of CPU cores in a system?

    - by Johan
Hi What is you experience with the make -j flag? There seem to be some controversial if the jobs are supposed to be equal to the numbers of cores, or if you can maximize the build by adding one extra job that can be cued up while the others "work". The question is if it is better to use -j4 or -j5? And have you seen (or done) any benchmarking that support one or the other? Thanks Johan

  • How do I get the F1-F12 keys to switch screens in gnu screen in cygwin when connecting via SSH?

    - by Mikey
I'm connecting to a desktop running cygwin via SSH from the terminal app in Mac OS X. I have already started screen on the cygwin side and can connect to it over the SSH session. Furthermore, I have the following in the .screenrc file: bindkey -k k1 select 1 # F1 = screen 1 bindkey -k k2 select 2 # F2 = screen 2 bindkey -k k3 select 3 # F3 = screen 3 bindkey -k k4 select 4 # F4 = screen 4 bindkey -k k5 select 5 # F5 = screen 5 bindkey -k k6 select 6 # F6 = screen 6 bindkey -k k7 select 7 # F7 = screen 7 bindkey -k k8 select 8 # F8 = screen 8 bindkey -k k9 select 9 # F9 = screen 9 bindkey -k F1 prev # F11 = prev bindkey -k F2 next # F12 = next However, when I start multiple windows in screen and attempt to switch between them via the function keys, all I get is a beep. I have tried various settings for $TERM (e.g. ansi, cygwin, xterm-color, vt100) and they don't really seem to affect anything. I have verified that the terminal app is in fact sending the escape sequence for the function key that I'm expecting and that my bash shell (running inside screen) is receiving it. For example, for F1, it sends the following (hexdump is a perl script I wrote that takes STDIN in binmode and outputs it as a hexadecimal/ascii dump): % hexdump [press F1 and then hit ^D to terminate input] 00000000: 1b4f50 .OP If things were working correctly, I don't think bash should receive the escape sequence because screen should have caught it and turned it into a command. How do I get the function keys to work?

  • Linux, GNU GCC, ld, version scripts and the ELF binary format -- How does it work??

    - by themoondothshine
Hey all, I'm trying to learn more about library versioning in Linux and how to put it all to work. Here's the context: -- I have two versions of a dynamic library which expose the same set of interfaces, say libsome1.so and libsome2.so. -- An application is linked against libsome1.so. -- This application uses libdl.so to dynamically load another module, say libmagic.so. -- Now libmagic.so is linked against libsome2.so. Obviously, without using linker scripts to hide symbols in libmagic.so, at run-time all calls to interfaces in libsome2.so are resolved to libsome1.so. This can be confirmed by checking the value returned by libVersion() against the value of the macro LIB_VERSION. -- So I try next to compile and link libmagic.so with a linker script which hides all symbols except 3 which are defined in libmagic.so and are exported by it. This works... Or at least libVersion() and LIB_VERSION values match (and it reports version 2 not 1). -- However, when some data structures are serialized to disk, I noticed some corruption. In the application's directory if I delete libsome1.so and create a soft link in its place to point to libsome2.so, everything works as expected and the same corruption does not happen. I can't help but think that this may be caused due to some conflict in the run-time linker's resolution of symbols. I've tried many things, like trying to link libsome2.so so that all symbols are alised to symbol@@VER_2 (which I am still confused about because the command nm -CD libsome2.so still lists symbols as symbol and not symbol@@VER_2)... Nothing seems to work!!! Help!!!!!! Edit: I should have mentioned it earlier, but the app in question is Firefox, and libsome1.so is libsqlite3.so shipped with it. I don't quite have the option of recompiling them. Also, using version scripts to hide symbols seems to be the only solution right now. So what really happens when symbols are hidden? Do they become 'local' to the SO? Does rtld have no knowledge of their existence? What happens when an exported function refers to a hidden symbol?

  • GNU General Public License (v2): can a company use the licensed software for free?

    - by EOL
When a library is released under the GPL v2, can a company use it internally for free? If they develop software based on it, do they have to release it under the GPL, even if they don't distribute it? Can they make money by using (not distributing) internally developed software that links to the GPL'ed library, without any compensation for the author? I am looking for a software license that only allows non-commercial uses (copy, modify, link to); the resulting derived programs must also be free for non-commercial uses. Is there any software license that does this for non-commercial uses, and prevents any commercial use (including using the software in order to make money)? It looks like the Creative Commons licenses are flexible enough to do something close to that, but I've read against using them for software. What do you think?

  • Why would gnu ld link order causes Signal 11 (SEGV) on startup?

    - by Benoit
We are building a large application in C++ that includes the use of many (static) libraries. We have a problem where the application crashes on startup with a Signal 11, before we even reach main. After much debugging, we have observed that if we explicitly reference an object file so its link order is early, the program crashes on startup. If the file is referenced later (or not referenced at all), the program does not crash. To be clear, there is NO code invoked directly from this object file. However, as it is C++, there might be static objects that do get constructed (it's a CORBA IDL generated file). We use the -Wl,--start-group ... --end-group arguments to multi-pass link the symbols since the libraries are interdependent. Here is a representation of what I mean. This is what the linker's object file order is: Order 1 Order 2 Order 3 foo.o foo.o foo.o ... ... ... main.o main.o main.o crasher.o libA.o libA.o libA.o LibB.o LibB.o LibB.o LibC.o LibC.o LibC.o crasher.o Results: NO CRASH NO CRASH CRASH Does any one have an idea why the linkage order has an effect on the crash? It would be nice if we could force the crasher.o to link later, but we're really after an explanation. Also, is there a way to force the linker to place crasher.o towards the end? Just to add to the fun, in actuality, crasher.o is part of a Library in the --start/--end-group.

  • How can I get the behavior of GNU's readlink -f on a Mac?

    - by troelskn
On Linux, the readlink utility accepts an option -f that follows additional links. This doesn't seem to work on Mac and possibly BSD based systems. What would the equivalent be? Here's some debug information: $ which readlink; readlink -f /usr/bin/readlink readlink: illegal option -f usage: readlink [-n] [file ...]

  • Configuring ant to run unit tests. Where should libraries be? How should classpath be configured? av

Hi All, I'm trying to run my junit tests using ant. The tests are kicked off using a JUnit 4 test suite. If I run this direct from Eclipse the tests complete without error. However if I run it from ant then many of the tests fail with this error repeated over and over until the junit task crashes. Any info about what causes this exception or how you've configured ant to successfully run unit tests is gratefully received. ant 1.7.1 (ubuntu), java 1.6.0_10, junit 4.4 Thanks. Update - Fixed Found my problem. I had included my classes directory in my path using a fileset as opposed to a pathelement this was causing .class files to be opened as ZipFiles which of course threw an exception.

  • amd gpu but display on intel integrated graphics

    - by pitseeker
On my Ubuntu 12.04 I connected my monitor to the onboard intel graphics. I'd like to use my ati radeon 6770 for opencl tasks (e.g. bitcoin mining). So far I couldn't figure out how to get the ati driver working. When calling "aticonfig --initial -f" it always writes a new xorg.conf that ignores the intel graphics. At boot time it works only when I attached the monitor to the ati card. So I manually tampered with the xorg.conf and got this: Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Default Monitor" Screen 0 "myscreen" 0 0 Screen 1 "deadscreen" RightOf "myscreen" EndSection Section "Module" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Default Monitor" Option "VendorName" "Monitor Vendor" Option "ModelName" "Monitor Name" Option "DPMS" "true" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "null Monitor" Option "Enable" "false" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Intel Integrated Graphics" Driver "intel" BusID "PCI:0:2:0" Screen 0 EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0" Driver "fglrx" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" Screen 1 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "myscreen" Device "Intel Integrated Graphics" Monitor "Default Monitor" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "deadscreen" Device "aticonfig-Device[0]-0" Monitor "null Monitor" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection I think this might be the right way since I see that X tries to start both drivers in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. - by Shyju
I want to use one rich text editor to one of my ASP page.I searched in internet and found that there are lot of open source items available like TinyMCE,FCK Editror, nice edit etc.. Can i put the same samples in my website. There is a GNU license associated with it.Can somebody interpret it for me to answer these questions 1 . Can i use it in my website without getting a permission from anyone ? 2 . Do i need maintain the same files always ? Can i make some customization and use it ? Customization is only the CSS changes its going to be. 3 . Do i need to put all the files as it is of the package which downloaded.because my download has samples which supports all languages. Do i need to put all those folders too From GNU license " if you distribute copies of such a program, whether gratis or for a fee, you must pass on to the recipients the same freedoms that you received. You must make sure that they, too, receive or can get the source code. And you must show them these terms so they know their rights."

  • NoSuchPortException using RXTX Java library on Windows?

    - by Steve
I have followed the instructions to setup rxtx on windows from http://www.jcontrol.org/download/readme_rxtx_en.html. What I did exactly was copy rxtxSerial.dll to "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_07\jre\bin" and copied RXTXcomm.jar to "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_07\jre\lib\ext" (my JAVA_HOME variable is set to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_07\jre) I also added RXTXcomm.jar to my eclipse project. But when I run it, it still says "NoSuchPortException" Devel Library ========================================= Native lib Version = RXTX-2.0-7pre1 Java lib Version = RXTX-2.0-7pre1 java.lang.ClassCastException: gnu.io.RXTXCommDriver cannot be cast to gnu.io.CommDriver thrown while loading gnu.io.RXTXCommDriver gnu.io.NoSuchPortException at gnu.io.CommPortIdentifier.getPortIdentifier(CommPortIdentifier.java:218) at TwoWaySerialComm.connect(TwoWaySerialComm.java:20) at TwoWaySerialComm.main(TwoWaySerialComm.java:107) In my java file, I tell it: try { (new TwoWaySerialComm()).connect("COM4"); } and I've also tried the Java Comm API. Both cannot recognize my serial port but I am sure I followed the instruction correctly. There files are there. Does anybody have any idea what it could be?

  • OSGi bundle imports packages from non-bundle jars: create bundles for them?

    - by John Simmons
I am new to OSGi, and am using Equinox. I have done several searches and can find no answer to this. The discussion at OSGI - handling 3rd party JARs required by a bundle helps somewhat, but does not fully answer my question. I have obtained a jar file, rabbitmq-client.jar, that is already packaged as an OSGi bundle (with Bundle-Name and other such properties in its MANIFEST.MF), that I would like to install as a bundle. This jar imports packages org.apache.commons.io and org.apache.commons.io.input from commons-io-1.2.jar. The RabbitMQ client 2.7.1 distribution also includes commons-cli-1.1.jar, so I presume that it is required as well. I examined the manifests of these commons jars and found that they do not appear to be packaged as bundles. That is, their manifests have none of the standard bundle properties. My specific question is: if I install rabbitmq-client.jar as a bundle, what is the proper way to get access to the packages that it needs to import from the commons jars? There are only three alternatives that I can think of, without rebuilding rabbitmq-client.jar. The packages from the commons jars are already included in the Equinox global classpath, and rabbitmq-client.jar will get them automatically from there. I must make another bundle with the two commons jars, export the needed packages, and install that bundle in Equinox. I must put these two commons jars in the global classpath when I start Equinox, and they will be available to rabbitmq-client.jar from there. I have read that one normally does not use the global classpath in an OSGi container. I am not clear on whether items from the global classpath are even available when building individual bundle classpaths. However, I note that rabbitmq-client.jar also imports other packages such as javax.net, which I presume come from the global classpath. Or is there some other bundle that exports them? Thanks for any assistance!

  • Executes a function until it returns a nil, collecting its values into a list

    - by Baldur
I got this idea from XKCD's Hofstadter comic; what's the best way to create a conditional loop in (any) Lisp dialect that executes a function until it returns NIL at which time it collects the returned values into a list. For those who haven't seen the joke, it's goes that Douglas Hofstadter's “eight-word” autobiography consists of only six words: “I'm So Meta, Even This Acronym” containing continuation of the joke: (some odd meta-paraprosdokian?) “Is Meta” — the joke being that the autobiography is actually “I'm So Meta, Even This Acronym Is Meta”. But why not go deeper? Assume the acronymizing function META that creates an acronym from a string and splits it into words, returns NIL if the string contains but one word: (meta "I'm So Meta, Even This Acronym") ? "Is Meta" (meta (meta "I'm So Meta, Even This Acronym")) ? "Im" (meta (meta (meta "I'm So Meta, Even This Acronym"))) ? NIL (meta "GNU is Not UNIX") ? "GNU" (meta (meta "GNU is Not UNIX")) ? NIL Now I'm looking for how to implement a function so that: (so-function #'meta "I'm So Meta, Even This Acronym") ? ("I'm So Meta, Even This Acronym" "Is Meta" "Im") (so-function #'meta "GNU is Not Unix") ? ("GNU is Not Unix" "GNU") What's the best way of doing this?

I download JavaFx from here. I placed it in my home directory(anto) under the name javafx. Then I did something like this : vi ~/.bashrc and added the following lines: javaFx_home=/anto/javafx/rt/lib/jfxrt.jar export PATH=$PATH:$javaFx_home But after providing the classpath, I tried running : groovy MyProgram (which depends on the JavaFx classpath). But that throws me an error. Where I went wrong?
