  • Sound issue in Lubuntu

    - by jvsa90
I'm recently having a problem in my Lubuntu deskptop: sound through the speakers doesn't seem to work. The funny thing is: it works when I plug in my earphones. I've tried to unmute everything with pavucontrol and alsamixer, but everything seems to be OK. $ sudo aplay -l **** Liste der Hardware-Geräte (PLAYBACK) **** Karte 0: Intel [HDA Intel], Gerät 0: HDA Generic [HDA Generic] Sub-Geräte: 0/1 Sub-Gerät #0: subdevice #0 $ lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio" 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device 034a Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 44 Memory at 58200000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel Can anyone guess what's happening? It has worked until recently and it definitely works in my Windows partition.

  • Distorted text in programs

    - by Teneff
I've installed Ubuntu 11 with gnome and in some point the text in the programs becomes unreadable like this. It's not only the text, but even the desktop background looks awful. I've tried to add section in xorg.conf, but it didn't helped out. Section "Device" Identifier "g33/X3000" Driver "intel" BusID "PCI:0:2:0" Option "ModeDebug" "on" Option "MonitorLayout" "LCD,VGA" Option "DevicePresence" "true" EndSection And this is what the lshw returns about the VGA *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0 version: 02 width: 32 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=i915 latency=0 resources: irq:16 memory:dfe00000-dfe7ffff ioport:8800(size=8) memory:e0000000-efffffff memory:dfe80000-d$

  • 11.04 Wireless is disabled by hardware switch Hp Compaq nc6220

    - by user75711
Here is some backstory if it is helpful: I had Windows Vista on my computer and I wanted to use wubi to install Ubuntu, everything was fine until I booted into the OS. It said my wireless was disabled by a Hardware Switch. So I booted back into Vista and it disabled there too. I have gotten rid of vista and installed 11.04 instead. It still has this error and as far as I know there is no switch anywhere and the fn keys do nothing. My lshw is: *-network DISABLED description: Wireless Interface product: PRO/Wireless 2915ABG [Calexico2] Network Connection vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 4 bus info: pci@0000:02:04.0 logical name: eth1 version: 05 serial: 00:15:00:0c:5d:62 width: 32 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes driver-ipw2200 driverversion=1.2.2kmprq firmware=ABG:9.0.5.27 (Dec 12 2007) latency=64 link=no maxlatency=24 mingnt=3 multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11abg resources: irq:21 memory:d0400000-d0400fff Thanks

  • No wireless after resuming from suspend?

    - by lapor
When I resume my computer from suspend it doesn't want to connect to any wireless connection. It looks like it is connecting, but after a while it asks me to retype a password for wireless connection. It connect after I restart it. • Get and install Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS driver

    - by williepabon
Recently, I changed my OS kernel from 10.04 to 11.10 (bugs), but after doing it, the video driver for the 8400 GS disappeared (was there in 10.04). I worked out the same procedure I did to install it in 10.04, mainly, sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-current sudo apt-get --purge autoremove sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get -y install nvidia-current but it didn't work even though the commands seemed to install the driver without problems. Right now my machine is working with the standard drivers, as shown. williepabon@WP-WrkStation:~$ sudo lshw -C display [sudo] password for williepabon: *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: nVidia Corporation vendor: nVidia Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:05:00.0 version: a2 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=nouveau latency=0 resources: irq:16 memory:de000000-deffffff memory:c0000000-cfffffff memory:d0000000-d1ffffff ioport:cc80(size=128) memory:dfc00000-dfc7ffff Any suggestions to correct the problem? • Getting wireless N to work on Dell Vostro 3300?

    - by luisfpg
I have a Dell Vostro 3300, which has a Broadcom BCM4313 wireless. The point is that I cannot make it work in N mode. NetwotkManager applet says I'm on 54 Mbit/s. Of course, my wireless router is N capable. I've double checked. Anyone knows what to do? • Ubuntu 11.10 boot: xhost: unable to open display

    - by paulus_almighty
I've had this papercut for a while now, it's time it was fixed. When I boot up Ubuntu, choosing "Ubuntu...generic" from the grub screen, Ubuntu fails to load. It just sits at the driver/module loading screen. What seems to be the most significant line in this output is "xhost: unable to open display" If I choose "Ubuntu...(recovery mode)" from grub then it loads OK. I don't get why this is. Out of interest I tried enabling boot error logging with #/etc/default/bootlogd BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=Yes but I'm not seeing anything in that file. ETA: I've had this problem since fresh install of 11.10. Here's lshw: $ sudo lshw -C display *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: GF104 [GeForce GTX 460] vendor: nVidia Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0 version: a1 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=nvidia latency=0 resources: irq:16 memory:f6000000-f7ffffff memory:e0000000-e7ffffff memory:ec000000-efffffff ioport:bf00(size=128) memory:e8000000-e807ffff

  • Benefit of using multiple SIMD instruction sets simultaneously

    - by GenTiradentes
I'm writing a highly parallel application that's multithreaded. I've already got an SSE accelerated thread class written. If I were to write an MMX accelerated thread class, then run both at the same time (one SSE thread and one MMX thread per core) would the performance improve noticeably? I would think that this setup would help hide memory latency, but I'd like to be sure before I start pouring time into it.

  • NSSet to NSData, then back out again, for GameKit?

    - by Peter Hajas
Hi guys, I'm trying to do some image edit syncing between two of the same app running on different iPhones. I would like to send an NSSet * from one device to another (which I imagine involves encapsulating in NSData) then decrypting this back to an NSSet, then using it in a touchesMoved type of function. Is this feasible, or should I work on syncing the UIImages instead? I worry that UIImage syncing would have too much latency for realtime interaction. Thanks for your help!

  • Faster integer division when denominator is known?

    - by aaa
hi I am working on GPU device which has very high division integer latency, several hundred cycles. I am looking to optimize divisions. All divisions by denominator which is in a set { 1,3,6,10 }, however numerator is a runtime positive value, roughly 32000 or less. due to memory constraints, lookup table is not option. Can you think of alternatives? I have thought of computing float point inverses, and using those to multiply numerator. Thanks

  • Any success using Apache Thrift on iPhone?

    - by jhs
Has anybody done or seen a deployment of Apache Thrift in an iPhone app? I am wondering if is a reasonable solution for a high-volume, low(er)-latency network service for iPhones compared to HTTP. One noteworthy thing I found is a bug report about running Thrift on the iPhone, which seems to have been fixed. But that doesn't necessarily indicate that it's a done deal.

  • Spring's JMS Design Question : Decouple processing of messages

    - by java_pill
I'm using a message listener to process some messages from MQ based on Spring's DefaultMessageListenerContainer. After I receive a message, I have to make a Web Service (WS) call. However, I don't want to do this in the onMessage method because it would block the onMessage method until the invocation of WS is successful and this introduces latency in dequeuing of messages from the queue. How can I decouple the invocation of the Web Service by calling it outside of the onMesage method or without impacting the dequeuing of messages? Thanks,

  • Emulate disk IO speeds in Android SDK

    - by Ben L.
I don't have a physical Android device to work with, so all I can use is the emulator. I'm wondering if there's something I could use to make the IO speeds more realistic - How do I slow down disk access to the speed it would be on a physical device? Also, this may be unrelated, but when I change the speed and latency options in Eclipse ADT DDMS view, I don't notice any change in internet speed on the emulator. Is this a bug?

  • Web Application Loading Screen

    - by Matt Charlton
I have a web app that has several tree views. When the page loads i see the unordered lists and after a small latency the styling of the tree is rendered into the DOM. Is there a way to mask the webapp, and have a spinner in the middle of the screen, and when everything on the page is fully rendered the spinner goes away and the mask fades out? Kind of like a semi transparent mask that you would see on a lightbox pop-up dialog.

  • CDN with South America peering points / edge nodes

    - by Bill
Hello, Does anyone one know of a CDN (Content Delivery Network) with true South American peering points or edge nodes? This seems to be quite rare. It seems that most CDNs serve Central and South America from Texas. However, our application requires low latency in Brazil, so this is not a good solution for us. We would like to avoid having to set up servers in South America just for this piece of the application, but may end up doing that. Thanks, Bill

  • How do I use Entity Framework in a CLR stored procedure?

    - by Ivan
I am looking forward to move all the logic (which is implemented as manipulating Entity Framework 4 objects) to a server side. It looks going to be simple (thanks to the application structure) and beneficial (as all I have is one oldy laptop as a client and one tough server which runs SQL Server 2008, and building a separate service for the logic can just introduce more latency if compared to doing it inside the database). So how do I correctly use Entities Framework inside a CLR stored procedure and make it using a host-server-provided SqlContext?

  • Is ajax + comet + asp.net scalable ?

    - by pixel3cs
Thinks at a backgammon online multiplayer game with over 100, or even 1000 online users. The game communication is done using Ajax + 3 seconds Comet connection interval + ASP.NET technology. Is this a real scenario ? Didn't so many Comet open connections block the server resulting in big latency ?
