• Options for connecting an external disk to an old laptop

  I've tried connecting a 2.5" external drive to an old laptop which has only USB 1. The LED on the disk lights up, but the disk doesn't seem to spin up. Since the same disk works fine on a newer laptop my guess is that the old one doesn't output enough power on the USB port. Besides looking for an external drive with its own PSU, what would you suggest? Will one of those USB cables with two connectors work? What about a powered USB hub?

• How to make Windows 7 use the internet connection that I specify

  I have a LAN adapter and a USB wireless internet connection. When both connected windows 7 always uses the USB. I tried changing the metric values but no luck. Let me explains the steps I took. Currently automatic metric on all adapters. LAN connected. ipconfig shows that it is connected to the correct ip/dns/gateway etc. IPv4 Route table shows Metric 24 Then connected USB. ipconfig shows USB connectivity then LAN in that order. Internet is now through USB. IPv4 Route table shows Metric 4249 for LAN and USB is 41. Gateway for USB shows "on-link". netstat -rn shows USBDEVICE on top. Changed LAN metric to 5 and now the route table shows LAN as 9 (not sure why it added 4) and USB as 41. netstat shows LAN then USB. ipconfig shows LAN then USB. But still connection is through USB. How do I know? Task manager shows utilization only through USB as well as speed is showing around 1mbps rather than LANs 10mbps. How can I get win7 use LAN while USB is connected. I am just trying to use USB as a backup just in case I lose LAN connection. Please help!! I thought i will make USB metric manually to say 10. But it says I have to reconnect for it to be effective. Currently USB still shows below LAN and still has 9 and 41 in the table. Disconnected USB. Table shows LAN metric as 24 (Not sure why it got changed from 9 and setting got reverted by to automatic) Reconnected USB. Now in the setting still shows 10 and the route table shows 11 for USB and LAN shows 4249 (settings shows 4245, 4 less)) For some reason restarting USB is resetting LAN setting when reconnected. • Mac download speed keeps decreasing

  I have a Mac that is getting extremely low connection speed from my WiFi. The other 3 computers in this house have a fast connection. However, on this Mac, once I connect to WiFi it's fast, but as time goes on the speed decreases dramatically. I thought it was the browser or something (Safari) so I downloaded Firefox, but I have watched the download speed decrease consistently as time goes by and right now it's at 8kb/sec instead of the 60-200 range it started at. Any suggestions?

• Windows Server 2008 R2 slows internet speed

  I just installed Windows Server 2008 R2 as my main file server on my home network. I've noticed that often times when I start my day my internet connection speed is slow. I'll go to Speakeasy speed test and it'll be at about 25% of its normal speed. When I restart my Server 2008 machine it increases back to normal. It will stay normal until Server 2008 has been running for a while. Any ideas? Edit: I had installed Collabnet Subversion within the past week which installs/sets up some other stuff for web access, I just uninstalled it. I'll report back tomorrow if that fixed my problem.

• how to test lan network speed with ps3

  I am having a heck of a time trying to get videos streaming to my PS3. I want to know if there is some way to test the speed between my PC and ps3 to see if that is the issue. For some reason when things get really slow between the ps3 and my computer (it's a wired connection through a switch), the wireless internet on completely different computer gets slow. I don't know what's causing what, but I don't know why there should be any correlation between internet speed on a wirelessly connected laptop and the LAN speed between a wired ps3 and computer.

• Web connection speed issue

  I encounter a strange issue with my web (wireless) connection on my laptop (Ubuntu 11.10) I'm able to have 540kbps (down) on all computers in my house (including laptop at the same distance from the box) except me. When i do a speed connection test, i can have this optimal speed immediately after booting. As i surf on the net, watching videos, download things, etc... it becomes slower progressively until 100-110 kbps and the speed remain the same until i reboot. I tried to figure out if a process consume bandwith in background with nethogs but i found nothing suspicious. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance for your help !!

  I hope I phrased this correctly. lshw gives: description: DIMM Synchronous 400 MHz (2.5 ns) product: M378B5773CH0-CH9 vendor: Samsung physical id: 0 slot: DIMM0 size: 2GiB width: 64 bits clock: 400MHz (2.5ns) And indeed the memory speed is set is set to 800MHz in the BIOS, which I think makes sense since it is a double rate. On the other hand, Googling strongly suggests that to this product number corresponds the PC3-10600 type, which is 1333MHz, not 800MHz. And this seems to be confirmed in the BIOS, where if I select Auto for memory bus speed, 1333MHz is selected "based on SPD settings". However in the latter case, the computer does not boot, i.e. the kernel panics, complaining that something attempted to kill the Idle process. So, I am I am beginning to suspect that I have been given defective memory, the technician that installed saw this, and lowered the bus speed. Is this a possibility?

It used to be working well, but after some config changes I broke something and now when I plug the dongle in I see it in lsusb output, but wlan0 isn't created and the led on the dongle doesn't light. • How to create a Windows 7 installation usb media from linux ? (to install Windows 7) - Help need to know better method

  I have been reading some web pages and posts here and in other forums about how to create a Windows 7 installation Usb media (to install windows 7 using a usb) from linux. I asked in technet about this , and they give me general ideas about how to do it I personally am not very familiar with linux, but basicaly all that you need to do... in whatever way you do it is the following: Format a usb flash drive, either fat32 or ntfs create a partition that is large enough to host the windows installation (give or take 3GB for 64bit, aroudn 2.5gb for 32bit) and mark that partition as active/bootable. Since this can be done with windows, but just as well with a tool like gparted, you should be able to do the same in debian. Once you have created that partition, mount the iso that you download, and copy all files starting from the root, into the root of the usb flash drive. That's all there's to it. There is a method that i found in various places,that is almost the same that the man of technet has said. But,there is a step,that in that method is done,that i don't know if it is really necessary,or not. Not allways dd works.Basically, the missing step was to write a proper boot sector to the usb stick, which can be done from linux with ms-sys. This works with the Win7 retail version. Here is the complete rundown again: Install ms-sys Check what device your usb media is asigned - here we will assume it is /dev/sdb. Delete all partitions, create a new one taking up all the space, set type to NTFS, and set it bootable: *# cfdisk /dev/sdb* Create NTFS filesystem: *# mkfs.ntfs -f /dev/sdb1* Mount iso and usb media: *# mount -o loop win7.iso /mnt/iso # mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb* Copy over all files: *# cp -r /mnt/iso/* /mnt/usb/* Write Windows 7 MBR on usb stick: *# ms-sys -7 /dev/sdb* ...and you're done. Shouldn't the usb work without doing the last step "# ms-sys -7 /dev/sdb" or to make the usb bootable , is a must , not only to mark the partition as bootable ? Would be better use rsync instead of cp -r ? All this steps should be done as root, i suppose , or if not , chmod to 664 and chown the directories where are mounted the usb and the iso, no ? But i suppose that the easier thing is to copy the data as root , and that this will not affect to the data. Has anyone tried this method or some similar like copying the iso with dd ?

  I recently downloaded SmartOS and tried running it on my HP ProLiant N40L, but it always fails on boot. After dd'ing the image to the USB stick, I plug it into the internal USB header and turn the machine on. After selecting from GRUB, it displays the following: , bss=0x0 It sits there for 2-4 minutes, then finally boots the OS and displays the following: WARNING: Couldn't read ACPI SRAT table from BIOS. lgrp support will be limited to one group. I've tried this with two different USB sticks. I've seen some mentions on the SmartOS website about people running it on an N40L, booting from USB, so maybe it's just broken hardware? Has anyone gotten this working?

• SpinRite and USB blues - does a solution exist?

  I use SpinRite to recover hard disks and their content, and to a lesser degree for preventive maintenance. However, if a USB drive (USB thumb drive and/or external hard disk with a USB interface) is connected when SpinRite scans for devices, then SpinRite never finishes/hangs. The work-around is of course to disconnect the drive, but there is value in being able to use SpinRite on USB drives. Some external drives have no screws and it is difficult to take out the hard disk without damaging the casing. And for those that have it would save the disassembling time. Is there a way to fix this problem (e.g. BIOS changes or a modified SpinRite boot CD) without resorting to floppy disks?

  i have made a live boot usb using UnetBootIn tool for ubuntu desktop 9.10 , i have windows xp sp2 installed as primary os and i want to make a partition for ubuntu but when i try to boot it via usb , it just goes to boot menu of ubuntu , then i enter the default type for installation after that nothing happens , just the ubuntu logo showed up and just that nothing happens after that , i can try the simpler task also i.e.via cd install but i want to know what's not working with this usb boot method Thnx n Advance

• Does any know fix/cause of USB drives that lose connection

  I have been having significant problems trying to copy files to a USB drive (G0-Flex 1.5 tb) No matter what I use to try to copy the files (python code, Windows copy and paste or Drobo Copy utility) I ultimately get a failure. The failure is always some indication that the device is not ready or able to be written to. I am pretty sure the problem is that the drive is losing its connection. I have done everything I can find so far including setting the USB Root hub to never turn off the power, I updated some usb drivers etc. I have found references to this problem primarily with Win7-64 bit. I have also had USB connection problems with other devices- we kept losing a connection to our Bravo Disc Publisher when we went to Win7 and finally bought a newer model and have not had problems since. Any pointers about diagnosing and or understanding the problem would be appreciated.

• Kickstart installation from USB -- Kickstart location

  After managing to get a Fedora ISO to rebuild successfully (for a USB stick) after adding a kickstart file (http://serverfault.com/questions/548405/), I now have an issue with locating the kickstart file on the USB media. When this is done from a CDROM you can simply kickckstart by adding this parameter to boot: linux ks=cdrom This will kickstart (providing the kickstart file is named ks.cfg and is in the root of the disk). Now, obviously this will be different for the USB drive, so from my research, I assumed that this line would do the job: linux ks=hd:sdb1:/ks.cfg Evidently this does not work. I get an error informing me this drive is already mounted and cannot be remounted. EDIT: Actual error message: mount: /dev/sdb1 is already mounted or /run/install/tmpmnt0 busy Warning: Can't get kickstart from /dev/sdb1:/ks.cfg To test that the syntax was correct I placed the kickstart file on another USB stick and loaded the same command to grab ks.cfg from the new location: linux ks=hd:sdc1:/ks.cfg This does work (providing USB sticks are mounted in order, boot - sdb1, kickstart - sdc1). The install will kickstart and complete the install with no issue. Obviously having to use 2 pen drives is somewhat frustrating and unreliable. Is there a way around this?

  I have a HP laptop with support for 3 USB 2.0 ports. I also have a clean 320Gb WD USB 2.0 drive. The HP can boot from USB (Bios options). I used the install disk (XP SP3 bootable) and after a few stutters, was actually able to load up a partition on the 320Gb drive with Windows. I cannot consistently get the system to boot up off the USB drive. I am able to drop Ubuntu on that same WD drive and boot up. I can even get Grub2 on Ubuntu to recognize the Win OS. But booting the Win OS is an impossible task. What can I do differently - if anything?

• HID USB Very Strange Problem...

  I realy hope some one can help me here cause i search all over the web and nothing comes up.. I allways used PS/2 KB and Mouse and a USB KeyPad (Genius ErgoMedia 500 Gaming Explorer) to play some games, mmorpg, fps, you named, very good whit 11 keys whit possible macros etc etc... Now it comes the problem, i have a USB mouse that have 4 extra buttons, and i need more button, i love buttons.. Well, i plug in the USB mouse and disconectes de PS/2. Everything is ok until i toutch the mouse. If i do so, the ErgoMedia goes off, then on, then i mouse the mouse or press a button and all over again. Yesterday i went buying a new mouse that i liked, a USB mouse too (NPlay whit macros and all that stuff 3600dpi...) Hoping the problem was only whit the other mouse, but no.. It does the exact same thing, ErgoMedia keeps disconecting and conecting everytime i toutch the mouse. What i allready did: Update drivers of both mouses Update drivers of ErgoMedia (no specific drivers(Windows based)) Update drivers of MB Chipset (Actualy no, cause it was up to date allready) Trying other USB Ports (4 Ports back, 4 Ports Front and even 1 Port in 16 card slot device) Disable the "Allows Windows to shut down the energy bla bla" thing in Device Setings. Look up in the Device Setings only apear a problem on the ergomedia (Human interface Device) when i move the damm mouse.. Using Everest to read behavier, everything normal, exepts the disconecting thing, but no errors. Not a power suply, only the ErgoMedia and the mouse are in the USBs, and i allready disable the 16 card reader whit one usb slot to see.. Clean the IRQ registry. Look the entire internet for a fix solution. Help others problems wile looking for a fix for me (Im not a pro but not a completly stupid) Talking to you beggin you to help me as a last resorce... Machine: Acer M3641 Core2Quad 64x Based OS Vista 64b 4GbRAM HD Audio and Graphics I realy hope some one out there knows a fix for this, maybe it´s a simple thing, so simple that i´m to stupid to see that.. • Security and data backup for Ubuntu usb installation

  Due to encryption on my corporate laptop I opted to install Ubuntu 9.10 on a flash drive and just use it as my hard drive. I tried the vmware but it crashed my xp a couple of times. Now I have a couple of concerns since I am totally new to Ubuntu and Linux. First, would it be possible for me to transfer my installation to a new usb drive? I now have a 4gb and it may get filled up soon, I don't seem to be able to see my actual files when I browse the usb drive. I also tried copying all files from this usb to another and boot from it but that failed. Second, whenever the system boots up I am never prompted for a password, it is always the username ubuntu. Which I guess means if I lose my usb drive my data is open wide. Is there a way to secure it or to use users and groups as on a regular hard drive installation? As a background, I created this by going into a working Ubuntu installation, System - Administration - USB Starter Disk Creator (was that the right way to start with?) Thanks!

• Nexus One USB freezes Vista SP2 Quad Core

  My Nexus One (N1) will occasionally freeze my Vista 32bit SP2 Quad Core 2.4GHz during POST. MB is ASUS P5N-E SLI with 4GB of RAM. The PC will be booting and when I connect the N1 via USB, the boot sequence will freeze, then continue once I unplug the N1 USB link. It happens whether the N1 is in USB debugging mode and when it is not. I'm not sure whether this is an N1 hw/fw issue, system interaction with my PC, or a result of my N1 development environment (I'm using the Eclipse Galileo IDE for Java Developers, primarily compiling to API Level 7. Eclipse has also occasionally frozen although I haven't established N1 USB cause-and-effect on that issue). Is anyone else experiencing these symptom?

• Short USB cables not charging?

  I find this a strange problem but I can't find anything online about it. Recently I purchased a few short USB cables (20-30cm), to use in my car's USB connector to charge my phone. Strangely an older longer USB cable (1.2m), charges the phone fine (and the icon changes to show charging). With any of the short cables in the same USB slot no charging happens. Both the long and the short cables are USB2 compatible. I naturally assumed the short cables were faulty but connecting them to a PC or connecting to a high capacity external battery charging is successful using all the short cables and longer cables. Hopefully someone here is able to give me an explanation of the problem and how I can overcome this and use a short cable where it is most appropriate. Thanks

• None of usb-controllers are working after a crash

  So I have a GA-p35-DS4 mboard with a Q6600, running windows7-x64. After a random crash with a bluescreen (not caused by anything particular as I recall), none of the usb-controllers are working. (And none of the devices connected to those usb ports). All the controllers are showed up in the device manager, but every one has a warning-icon (as they are not functioning properly). The windows identifies them correctly, it shows exactly the model of each controller, and it says that the driver is installed. Now, when I try to reinstall the driver (Update driver menu item in the device manager), it tries to find it, finds the driver, but quits saying that the driver was found but could not be installed. Additionally, it displays "This operation requires an interactive window station", whatever that means... Now get this, the same thing happens with a new pci-usb controller card! It is found (actually each time the machine starts, it is found as new hardware), but trying to install drivers leads nowhere, I am getting the same message about an interactive window station. (tried to install drivers from the acoompanying CD) I have tried deleting those devices from device manager and let windows find them again, but that leads to same results. None of the ports on this extension card work either. This should not be a hardware problem, a usb keyboard connected to the builtin usb controller works in bios, and even in another OS running the same computer (old xp installation) What to do? Will I have to reinstall? Can deleting infcache.1 help? Is there some way to let windows remove all old drivers and try to find all hardware again, this time only looking for drivers on a windows install disk or something?

• Kickstart based installation of RHEL 6.4 from USB

  I want to setup some brand new servers with RHEL 6.4. Servers do not have DVD, so, I have to use USB for the installation. I already have a custom ISO with a kickstart file that I use on servers with DVD flawlessly. I used iso2usb to move the ISO t? my USB. When I boot from the USB, the ks file is found, anaconda starts, but then stops with the following error: "The installation source given by device ['sda1'] could not be found. Please check your parameters and try again" Notes: The USB IS the sda. My custom ISO file is renamed to linux.iso from iso2usb and it is present in the root directory of the USB. Kickstart file has the following entry: harddrive --partition=sda1 --dir=/ Please help me to automate the installation with kickstart. • Internet Connection not working - USB LAN connection - from particular modem

  I am trying to fix Internet connection on a friends Dell inspiron 1720 with XP service pack 3. It has an integrated network card that stopped working, after powering down/up the modem still didnt work I brought it back to my place to try a few things ie check cable, update driver etc... still didnt work. So I bought a USB LAN connector. It didnt work straight away but I went to configure the properties and changed the ConnectionType from AutoSense to 100 BaseT 10BaseT Full_Duplex, I basically just tried them all. From my place when connected to my desktop - 10 BaseT and 10BaseT Full_Duplex worked. From my place When connected to their laptop - 10 BaseT and 10BaseT Full_Duplex worked. Happy I went back to my friends house confident it would all work, and it didnt. Brought it back to mine and it did. While there, in Network Connections the connection is there recognized, enabled, 'working properly' it just says not connected. Also there is no led on the USB connector While at mine as above except there is an led on the USB connector and it says connected. Other difference I can think of is they have a cable modem, I'm plugged into the back of a Belkin wireless router - would this make a difference? Any other ideas what to try? (Would getting the model of the cable modem help anyone?) The USB connector is "DM9601 USB to Fast Ethernet"
