• How good is it for SEO if you have a widget that lives on other sites?

  I made a widget that would ideally live on other sites. Here is an example: http://www.comehike.com/outdoors/widget.php?type=hike&hike_id=108&width=500&height=500 I guess since the widget would link back to me, it would be an SEO boost for my site. Is that correct? Or would it be just an SEO boost for that particular URL? If it is just an SEO boost for the particular URL, it does me little good since that page does not link to any of my other pages. Am I thinking about this correctly? How are these things typically handled so that there is a benefit to my site's SEO?

• Move old website with bad SEO to other domain: redirect or start from scratch?

  I have an old website with very bad SEO and PR, but still with some visitors per-day. Lately I've rebuilt the app and the concept of it and I'm going to deploy everything in a new domain. I would like to not lose those old visitors but I'm wondering if redirecting that old website to my new one is going to damage the SEO in the new website. Don't know also if it deserves to make the move in the Google Webmaster Tools and Bing or better start from scratch.

  I have a Google Engage account, which keeps showing me: Your Google Account has changed The email address on your Google Account has changed. The account that controls your Engage membership now has an email address of: fasheikh15%[email protected]. How can I fix this? Go to the sign-in page: Sign In Log in with your normal password but instead use the following email address: myemailadd%[email protected] You will then be given the option to switch your Engage member profile to: [email protected]. If you wish to do this then just follow the on-screen instructions when you get to the Switch Accounts page. I've been contacting them since April to no avail so I thought I'd see if anyone here has any fixes?

• What is the best taxonomy from Google's perspective?

  I was wondering what the best way is to structure a new website in Google's eyes. Currently, it contains two top-level categories (X & Y), and clicking a term under either one will result in the URL: www.nameofsite.com/X/X type term, or /Y/Y type term Technically, it is correct to group all "X type terms" under X and "Y type terms" under Y, but we could probably be more granular and break all articles into 5-6 top-level categories by breaking Y up into more specific categories. Given that the current URL structure will eventually result in 1000's of "X type terms" and "Y type terms" under just two top-level categories, would it be more advisable to have several of these, as suggested? • Server Setups for Agencies [closed]

  We are considering consolidating our server administration by cutting down on the number of systems we currently use to manage all our websites(~65 websites). Currently we have a testing server and 3 production servers. (2 - cherokee(linode), 1 - apache (mt)) We don't have a dedicated server admin, so I am stuck with managing all these servers, and as a developer, I don't want to deal with all the server hassle. So my main goal is to cut down on the time spent messing with the servers. We have looked at Pagoda Box and AppFog as possibilities. I am not sure if Pagoda Box would be cost effective. With 65+ websites we may end up paying anywhere from 0 to $50+ per website per month. Right now we page about $250 per month for the 4 VPS servers mentioned above. We already use Capistrano for deployment. I have the opportunity to completely overhaul the entire setup and I would like some feedback on where you found your information for large scale server management or how you currently do it. Articles are welcome. In summary: What is new (past 2 years) in simple server management arena? If you work at an agency or have had agency experience, how do/did you manage your sites? a. What is the level of effort for SSL, new site setup, database management, and extension management. b. How did you handle datacenter outages. Anyone with Pagoda Box experience, do you like it and did you have problems with Wordpress, Cakephp, Drupal, Expression Engine or Magento? a. Is it expensive for you? b. How has server uptime been? In other words, something similar to older MSN Messenger, but on the web. Any ideas on what to use? To clarify, I am looking for suggestions on languages and libraries to use. I want to be able to fully customize it as much as possible because I might want to add other (somewhat interesting) functions later. • Hide from google while developing

  I will be building a (wordpress) web site. While I am developing, other team members will be pushing content. I'd like to have it hidden from google while under development. It will be hosted on godaddy. I have thought of not pointing the domain name to it until live and using "preview dns", or buying a static IP during development. Or hosting dev site in a sub-directory ("/dev/") until ready and then moving it up a level. If in the dev directory I'd add htaccess or robots.txt to not crawl. Is any of this a bad idea? Will google penalize for any of this - like search by IP and then associate that with the domain later on? Any better ideas?

• Images from remote source - is it possible or is really a bad practice?

  I'm building a management system for websites and I had an idea related to image galleries that I'm not sure it's a good approach. Since images might need good deals of space depending on how much images a user uploads an so on, I thought on using cloud services like dropbox, mega and google drive to store images and load then when needed. The obvious problem is that for me this seems a useless solution because it would be slow to download the images from the remote source, making the user experience not so good. Is there any way to save images of a image gallery on remote source without getting the user experience bad because of speed? Or this is really not a good practice?

We would be building a Facebook application in Django (Python), but still not sure of where to host it economically, and with a good provision to scale in case the app gets viral. Some details about the app: Would be HTML based like a website,using django as a framework. 100K is the number of expected pageviews in a day, if the app is viral. The users will not generate any media content, only some database data will be generated by them. It would be great if someone with more experience can guide on following points: A) Hosting on Google app engine or Amazon EC2 or some other cloud like RackSpace : Preferable points found in AppEngine were ease of deployment, cost effectiveness and easy scaling. For EC2: Full hold of the virtual machine,Amazon NoSQL and RDMBS database services in case we decide to use them. B) Does backend technology affect monthly cost? eg. would CPU and memory usage difference of Django over , for example , PHP framework like CodeIgnitor really make remarkable difference in running costs. • how can i track visits to ALL of the subpages of my website COMBINED TOGETHER?

  Right now im using statcounter and google analytics. They are great. But my counts are currently separated. Ex: website.com = 1000 visits a day, website.com/about = 50 visits a day, website.com/privacy = 10 visits a day, etc.. How can have a combined count of all of my sub-pages? (mainpage + about page + about 100 other sub-pages ) I can of course manually add them all together, but that's time consuming because there are many pages. I tried placing a separate tracking code in a php include that sits in each of the sub-pages, but it doesnt seem to be working. It seems to require a single URL to create it, which it then only counts the visits from the one url, rather than ALL of them. Ex: website.com) Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully im just missing something very obvious. Thank you!

• Unable to access media wiki pages from another computer?

  I have set up a web server in my Windows 7 with easyPHP. The website works fine when I browse the locally via localhost or 127.0.0.1. But, unable to open the site from another computer which is in the same LAN or in connected to my LAN. My local IP is in the 10.x.x.x range. The firewall turned off on my private network. I've also tried by changing Listen 127.0.0.1:80 to Listen 80 In httpd.conf but still i'm unable to access the media wiki from other machines. Unable to browse the pages from other machines using localhost or using IP address (Ex: 10.x.x.x). Could you please let me know your suggestions and comments?

But I will always have two sections of text and I want to prevent one section from appearing in search results, the other section must be indexed. <p class="please-index-me">text</p> <p class="get-out">never index me please</p> I thought that maybe if I load the "please don't index me text" with Javascript maybe search engines wouldn't look for it. But I am not sure it would work and this is not really nice. I was wondering if there is a way to tell search engines "hey, this text you can't grab, move on". So, is there a way to do it?

• Do I really need to remove special characters in a URL?

  I have an FTP account shared with friends where we upload underground music albums and then we use the links to share the downloads in a music forum. The problem is that the album names are in french so there is a lot of special characters in the name. So the URL looks like http://www.mydomain.com/downloads/Some Band - En français avec des caractères spéciaux (2013) [7'' EP].zip For me it works perfectly and I can download the file by using this URL, but I have read everywhere that special chars are bad in URL. Is there any reason why I must remove the special characters or encode the URL? Is everyone able to access a URL with special characters or will some older browsers not be able to download the files? I really don't care about SEO or anything else. I just want the download links to work for everyone. Since the files are uploaded through FTP, I can't use PHP to remove the special characters with a regex, so I really don't know what to do.

  Unfortunately i read an article on how to avoid destroying your websites SEO from a redesign article AFTER its was too late! We get ALL our customers from our website as we do not have a shop. Since that dreaded day a month ago the phone pretty much stopped, basically no emails, Google rankings down and Google analytics have halved by 50%. Yesterday i did some research into as as i had no idea that a re-design of a website could have such a damaging effect - yes i am a novice and use a WYSIWYG type web builder. There are lots of info on how to AVOID this from happening BUT what do i do as i have already made the mistake? • Impact of migrating home page from HTTP to HTTPS on search results

  I've had to change one of my site's home page to HTTPS from HTTP. I had plenty of links coming into the HTTP page and was performing well in Google against many of my targeted search phrases. I did a 301 redirect from the HTTP page to transfer the link juice to the HTTPS page (and to prevent duplicate content issues) but my search rankings have tanked which indicates no link juice has been transferred. My PageRank has vanished - which I'd expect - but I'm really surprised that the SERP rankings fell off the face of the earth. Anyone have any ideas how I can recover from this? I've waited a couple of months since the changes took effect just in case Google was taking time to check it out.

• What kind of redirect (301 or 302) for an email links tracker?

  We are developing an email sending application ("à la" Mailchimp). Hyperlinks inserted by our users, in the emails they want to send, are replaced by a tracking URL on our application (https://ourdomain.com/trackingurl?blablabla) which then redirects the email reader to the original URL our users included in their emails. This allows us to record statistics about link clicks. Until now, we used 301 for those redirections, but we noticed that Google began indexing pages on our application which are in fact redirects to other domains. (The title and snippet in Google results are from the other domain, but the link in green is from our application). We took action by adding those urls to our robots.txt, but Google seems to take forever (months!) before removing them for its index and removing them by hand in Webmaster Tools would take a lot of time since there are lot. I would like to know which kind of HTTP redirect (301 or 302) is best suited for this kind of opreation ? Do you think switching to 302 redirects could improve this situation since we don't really want Google to index redirected links from our clients emails ?

  I was wondering if someone could help me how to manage temporarily inactive website in regards of SEO and search engine. the case is i managed a big ecommerce site, and sometime i need to put down page(s). could be days, could be weeks, could be months, and it depends on our vendor. if my visitors land on the page that been temporarily inactive then i can give them a message that the vendor they looking for is not available at this time and he can check back later OR check another vendor with similar products, but how do i send my message to search engine robots? if i use 301 status and forward URL page to another similar products, then the chance that the current URL being deindex is huge while i still want to use that URL for the future if my vendor want to re-join. any advise will highly appriciated

• How can I register a domain that requires country residency?

  I tried to register a .pm domain from ovh.co.uk, but they e-mailed me saying they want valid proof that I am a resident of the United Kingdom. I currently live in the United States though. I am aware that I have to be a resident. That's not the question I'm asking. I want to know if it's possible, whether through some website that will get residency or some 'hacking' method, to register the domain I am interested in without having to physically be a resident of the country. I will try and find out if ovh.co.uk will charge me an extra fee, but until then I am curious to know if there is any way I could do this. Also, is there any other website I could purchase .pm domains from?
