• How can I make these Google Analytics numbers add up? (Frequency & Recency)

  Here's a screen shot from Google Analytics. It's my last months traffic, and this is the 'Frequency & Recency' tab. So I believe that if I add up all the numbers under 'visits' I get 11,432, which is right, and if I add up all the numbers under 'pageviews' I get 14,785 and that's right as well. But, let's take the last line - the last line appears to say that 71 people, visited more than 51 times each, and they viewed a total of 243 pages between them - that doesn't seam to make any sense - did they view 9% of a page each time? So that's clearly wrong - what's the error in my calculation?

• Connect divs with (non-straight) lines [migrated]

  I'd like to develop my site with a layout that looks somewhat like houses with connected plumbing, or multiple computers connected to a network. Basically, the will be boxes floating in space, with lines connecting some of the boxes. I'd like these lines to have some turns in them as well (just simple 90 degree corners) rather than just a straight line. My question is what is the best way to achieve this, and perhaps a small example. My thoughts were to use: PHP and CSS: I could create a background grid and then, with some complicated algorithms, draw paths using the grid's borders. This would be more dynamic, but I'm not sure I can plot the math all by myself. just CSS: Perhaps this is as simple as making some pre-drawn lines like L-shapes and T-junctions, then just placing and scaling them. But I don't believe there's a way to scale an image by slicing it.. so the line width would be scaled and thus each image would look different. Any thoughts?

• Web host that handles excess php mailing [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I'm having trouble choosing a host that meets my application's needs. Please kindly inform me what I should look for when choosing a web host. My application is similar to a reminder service that reminds users of events that they scheduled. I'm sending emails to users through a PHP script. I'm not sending one email to multiple recipients. Each recipient receives a different message. I plan to use cron jobs every minute and expect the application to send roughly 200 individual emails in 1 hour (for a small user base that may grow). I don't have hosting experience with this type of application. I plan to start on a shared host and move up in the future to vps or dedicated. Most shared hosts that I looked into allow 50-100 emails per hour with delays between mailings. What do you recommend?

• As good as no bounces are registered in Google Analytics [on hold]

  For a client I am having an issue for which I can't find an explanation. For some reason, bounces are no longer measured (or almost none) in GA. In GA I can see that the issue started in January 2013. I have been looking at the code inside and out, but I can't find any reason why. On the production site, there is (will be removed soon) a POST done on page load, so I thought that Google might see this as user interaction, hence never counting a bounce, but on staging i removed this POST and in the GA account for staging, still no bounces are registered. I have also checked if the tracking code appears twice on the page, and this is not the case. I tried with the GA debug plugin in Firefox and Chrome to see if that would learn me anything, but no luck... The site in question is www.kiala.be.

• Looking for open-source solutions for a knowledge sharing website

  There is a need in my workplace to setup a knowledge sharing site, a place where users can discuss projects they are working share documentation ask questions I am looking for a open-source system that answers these needs, and that can be setup in a week, and requires only PHP and MySQL. I am a Wordpress fan and developer and could easily implement such a system in Wordpress, however this system needs to be very simple to use for the technically challenged. Without customization, Wordpress users would still need to login to the "back-end" to post. I like the Stackexchange (OSQA) format, but these do not allow for file uploading out of the box. I do not have experience with Buddy Press, would this be an alternative?

  Is there an easier way to wait for an element to load ( by independant script/mootools/other ). For example: I am waiting for a google map to load, but I don't want to use its API for checks. So I made two functions: function checkIfexist() { if(jQuery('#container').length) return 0; else reload(1); } function reload(mode) { setTimeout(function(){ do stuff . . . if(mode==1) checkIfexist(); }, 400); } I am starting it with reload(1); Is there an easier way to use setTimeout in such a way?   Today I had a few users blocked in our server firewall because of: (smtpauth) Failed SMTP AUTH login from Can someone explain the reason? What does it exactly mean? Could someone be using the our website to access SMTP for spamming purpose? UPDATE: Server info: Centos OS with CPanel and WHM. However no one has access to either. Taking a look at the logs it looks like someone repetitively attempted to login with a known existent user/pass.

  I have two WordPress multisites under one domain - city-x.domain.com and city-y.domain.com. domain.com is a landing page where you select your city, and a cookie will redirect the user to that city on subsequent visits. I'd like to be able to track the number of hits on all pages on domain.com, city-x.domain.com and city-y.domain.com separately and combined. How is this On a side note, I've heard that GA underestimates hits. As this is important for advertising purposes, is there a better free service?

  Anyone know of a reputable domain name company which deals in .museum domain names? Previously we had used DomainBank without much issue. DomainBank was bought by Dotster and am having nothing but trouble since the switch. Currently the website has been down for two days and it is a MAJOR issue. I know .museum is a seldom used domain name but I really need to switch to a reputable company. GoDaddy doesn't work with them unfortunately. Anyone know of a good company that does?

Uploading the files on scribd and embedding it on our website for viewing on scribd viewer. Will making documents available on srcibd viewer on our website affect search engine rankings ? Will search engines treat it as duplicate content as those are already uploaded on scribd and we are embedding it on our website ? On scribd we have set the uploaded documents as 'private' though. I'm after the math involved, and cannot find any good non-marketing stuff on the web. The sort of questions I want to answer: how much impact does a single variable (e.g. color of text) have? what is the correlation between variables? what type of distribution is used for modelling (Gaussian, Binomial, etc.)? When using statistics to analyze results - what should be considered as a random variable - the web-page element that gets different variations or the binary conversion-or-no-conversion outcome of an impression? There's plenty of information about different website optimization testing methods and their benefits\pitfalls, plenty of information about multivariate statistics in general, do you guys know of resources that discuss statistics in this specific context of website optimization ? • Is it possible to grant access to a folder in a SVN server using SVN's API?

  I need to develop a web application (Using any language but I'm familiar with Frameworks Symfony2 and Rails), that is able to grant access to a user to a determined folder on another server on the same network from the application's front-end. I found out that SVN has an API and that I could interact with it with PHP or Ruby (Apparently), although I would be willing to program the application on another language, the server where the files are stored is using Windows and I thought on using Virtual SVN server, however I can't find any function on the API to grant users access to files and/or folders or access of any kind, like you usually do using the GUI (VirtualSVN on Windows). Am I missing anything? Is this even possible?

• Should I be concerned about hAtom tags on my blog?

  I am using a theme that automatically adds hatom-entry, hatom-feed classes on my WordPress blog. I read that such tags/classes should be used for syndicated content. Anyway, then I ran a Rich Snippet Tool, which threw a "HAtomfeed" error. So I removed a "hfeed" div tag. Now, should I be concerned? Can this cause any problems? I still have a couple of these classes (listed below), and I just hope they do not effect my site's ranking. To avoid having duplicated pages, i want to add canonical meta tag in header... but on which page? does it have to be on both of them or only on second? On on first? • Dropbox and IIS

  I'm running into the problem of using Dropbox and IIS. I am using the Dropbox Folder Sync plugin to sync a folder outside the Dropbox folder. They are synced into my inetpub\root\downloads\ directory. The problem is not that it doesn't sync. The problem is that the files that get synced have no permissions attached to them. I can't open any of them on IIS. Initially the downloads were to be only PDFs but they don't open so I tried an .ASPX file and it fails to load as well. Is there any way around this or another program I can use to sync files but allow them to be opened on an IIS server. Thanks for any help!

• Can I use Google AdSense within a banner rotator?

  I have 3 rotating banners on one 728x90 position on my website, so every time a page is loaded another banner is shown. One of these is AdSense. Is it legal, I mean is this strictly prohibited or not? Because, the code is basically stored in db table in my CMS module in Wordpress, so I guess it is OK. But I am asking to be sure. It seems to be working fine in Firefox and Chrome, but IE displays the border directly against the image, with no padding. Any suggestions? • Alternatives to Google Sites for a personal web site?

  I'd like to find a hosting solution for my personal, fairly low-traffic, web site. I think Google Sites would suit me perfectly, but I've heard horror stories about Google's algorithms shutting down all your accounts on a whim, with no right of appeal, so I'm naturally worried, because I don't want to lose my Gmail. Edit I'm talking about cases like this one: I tried contacting somebody at Google support ("Surely they should have a support department, right?" Nope, wrong!) (The victim managed to regain access to his Gmail account when his case went "viral", but he never got an explanation as to why he had been locked out in the first place) Are there good, preferably free, alternatives to Google Sites and what are their PROs and CONs? One requirement is that I should be able to point the DNS (foobar.com) to it.

I would like to use a cloud service that autmatically fetches my files from my server the first time users request it (like a classic cdn) (So I can have all files stored within 1 server) I was looking at Amazon CloudFront and, to get the same bandwidth 8'000 GB/month, I have to pay like 2000 USD vs my 60 USD of my dedicated server. Is there a cheaper alternative?
