  • When should I think about implementing my User authentication / session?

    - by Jason N
After spending some time wireframing my ideas, I want to start building my rails app. However, I'm well aware that later down the line I'd like to consider multiple user accounts. Should I be thinking about the implementation of this from this early stage, or is this something I can implement without too much fuss later? It seems like something that would be stupid to attempt later, but part of me just wants to get the guts of the thing working - a couple of simply forms and writing/reading some stuff from the db.

  • Preprocessor #if directive

    - by Caslav
I am writing a big code and I don't want it all to be in my main.c so I wrote a .inc file that has IF-ELSE statement with function and I was wondering can it be written like this: #if var==1 process(int a) { printf("Result is: %d",2*a); } #else process(int a) { printf("Result is: %d",10*a); } #endif I tried to compile it but it gives me errors or in best case it just goes on the first function process without checking the var variable (it is set to 0).

  • Determining the word width in C

    - by das_weezul
Hi! I'm learning C right now and so I'm fiddling about with pointers. Is there a way to determine the word width of the CPU in C because I'm writing a small program which prints it's own stack (Because I'm curious how it is structured), so that information would come in handy. Right now I'm using an int pointer, as an integer is 4 Bytes wide and I'm using a 32-bit Intel Atom CPU. Thanks in advance, C gurus ;o)

  • Driver for Sony Vaio Alps Touchpad for Ubuntu 11 [closed]

    - by Shimul Bhowmik
I have vaio E-series laptop. Recently I installed ubuntu 11 on it. My touchpad seems to be working except the fact that in settings no touchpad is shown. As a result, I can't configure it for edge-scrolling or deactivating it while typing. I have already tried configuring grub (actually it was already configured). I have even installed softwares like 'psmouse-alps 0.11' but of no use. Technical staff of sony blatantly replied that they only provide support in windows..blah... Now, I am really worried if my touchpad will ever work properly or not ... Please help...

  • Resolving C++ Name Collision

    - by jnm2
InitializeQTML is a function in QTML.h. I'm writing a wrapper and I would like to use the name InitializeQTML for the wrapper function: #include <QTML.h> public class QuickTime { public: static void InitializeQTML(InitializationFlags flag) { InitializeQTML((long)flag)); }; }; How can I reference the original InitializeQTML function from inside the wrapper function and avoid the name collision without renaming the wrapper?

  • Rvalues in C++03

    - by DeadMG
How can you tell whether or not a given parameter is an rvalue in C++03? I'm writing some very generic code and am in need of taking a reference if possible, or constructing a new object otherwise. Can I overload to take by-value as well as by-reference and have the rvalue returns call the by-value function? Or do I have a very sickening feeling that this is why rvalue references are in C++0x?

  • Dynamically created jagged "rectangle" array

    - by gagar1n
In my project I have a lot of code like this: int[][] a = new int[firstDimension][]; for (int i=0; i<firstDimension; i++) { a[i] = new int[secondDimension]; } Types of elements are different. Is there any way of writing a method like createArray(typeof(int), firstDimension, secondDimension); and getting new int[firstDimension][secondDimension]? Once again, type of elements is known only at runtime.

  • javascript string difference

    - by Konrad
What is the difference (if any) between the javascript strings defined below? var str1 = "Somestring"; var str2 = 'Somestring'; "" and '' mean two very different things to me predominantly writing code in C++ :-) EDIT: If there is no difference why are there two ways of achieving the same thing and which is considered better practice to use and why. Thanks!

  • How do I create a gradient button on an iPhone?

    - by jkp
How can I create a button that looks like the one found in the screenshot below on an iPhone with the 3.0 SDK? It's a button that shows when connecting to a host iTunes library from the iTunes remote. Is it a case of writing a custom control or is this a stock style?

  • How do I read and write to a file using threads in java?

    - by WarmWaffles
I'm writing an application where I need to read blocks in from a single file, each block is roughly 512 bytes. I am also needing to write blocks simultaneously. One of the ideas I had was BlockReader implements Runnable and BlockWriter implements Runnable and BlockManager manages both the reader and writer. The problem that I am seeing with most examples that I have found was locking problems and potential deadlock situations. Any ideas how to implement this?

  • Prolog: declaring an operator

    - by B K
I have defined ! (factorial) function and registered it as arithmetic function and an operator, so that I can execute: A is 6!. Now I'd like to define !! (factorial of odd numbers), but the same way - writing clauses, registering arithmetic_function and operator, calling A is 7!! - results in SyntaxError: Operator expected How should I, if possible, register !! operator ? Yes, I realize, ! is normally the cut.

  • Detect if a method was overridden using Reflection (C#)

    - by Andrey
Say I have a base class TestBase where I define a vistual method TestMe() class TestBase { public virtual bool TestMe() { } } Now I inherit this class: class Test1 : TestBase { public override bool TestMe() {} } Now, using Reflection, I need to find if the method TestMe has been overriden in child class - is it possible? What I need it for - I am writing a designer visualizer for type "object" to show the whole hierarchy of inheritance and also show which virtual methods were overridden at which level.

  • Write string to fixed-length byte array in C#

    - by toasteroven
somehow couldn't find this with a google search, but I feel like it has to be simple...I need to convert a string to a fixed-length byte array, e.g. write "asdf" to a byte[20] array. the data is being sent over the network to a c++ app that expects a fixed-length field, and it works fine if I use a BinaryWriter and write the characters one by one, and pad it by writing '\0' an appropriate number of times. is there a more appropriate way to do this?

  • Breaking out of the Google App Engine Python lock-in?

    - by Alterlife
Are there any guidelines to writing Google App Engine Python code that would work without Google's infrastructure on other platforms? Is there any known attempt to create an open source framework which can run applications designed for Google App Engine on other platforms? Edit: To clarify, the question really is: If I develop an application on Google App Engine now, will I be able to migrate to another platform later, or is it a lock in?

  • Check directory for files, retrieve first file

    - by Lowgain
I'm writing a small ruby daemon that I am hoping will do the following: Check if a specific directory has files (in this case, .yml files) If so, take the first file (numerically sorted preferrably), and parse into a hash Do a 'yield', with this hash as the argument What I have right now is like: loop do get_next_in_queue { |s| THINGS } end def get_next_in_queue queue_dir = Dir[File.dirname(__FILE__)+'/../queue'] info = YAML::load_file(queue_dir[0]) #not sure if this works or not yield info end I'd like to make the yield conditional if possible, so it only happens if a file is actually found. Thanks!

  • Image overlay on external window

    - by user295848
I'm writing a C# WPF application that creates a video capture of the active window. What I want to do is overlay a transparent .png file in the corner of the active window while a capture is in progress so that all the videos created by my application are watermarked. If I have the IntPntr handle of the window I am capturing and an image file - what is the best way to go about this? Thanks

  • Regular expression that matches valid IPv6 addresses

    - by Readonly
I'm having trouble writing a regular expression that matches valid IPv6 addresses, including those in their compressed form (with "::" or leading zeros omitted from each byte pair). Can someone suggest a regular expression that would fulfill the requirement? I'm considering expanding each byte pair and matching the result with a simpler regex.

  • LaTeX vs DocBook

    - by yfel
I have only little knowledge about LaTeX, basic formatting, basic math fomulae etc.. I found that LaTeX is hard to configure to my own flavor. Recently, I've heard about Docbook, which is also a typesetting mechanism, but much easier since it uses XML. So, if my main job using LaTeX/Docbook is writing a simple document (not a class book) with some mathematics, and I want easy configuration, and a highly constomizable application, which one is better, and is there any good book on Docbook?
