• Why C++ is an abomination [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Why do so many people dislike C++? I was reading the blog by Peter Seibel (Author of Coders at Work) where brilliant programmers like Ken Thompson, Joshua Bloch and Guy Steele have despised c++ to no end. What is it in C++ that people hate so much? And despite so much hate towards it, companies like Google are still using it, and some of the programmers who snubbed C++ have worked or are already working at Google. So, what is it in the language that despite so much hate from top programmers, it's still used at most of the places? I haven't really used C++ beyond academic projects, so i don't know much about the disadvantages of the language. What do programmers here think about it? --Chander

• How to structure a project that supports multiple versions of a service?

  I'm hoping for some tips on creating a project (ASP.NET MVC, but I guess it doesn't really matter) against multiples versions of a service (in this case, actually multiple sets of WCF services). Right now, the web app uses only some of the services, but the eventual goal would be to use the features of all of the services. The code used to implement a service feature would likely be very similar between versions in most cases (but, of course, everything varies). So, how would you structure a project like this? Separate source control branches for each different version? Kind of shying away from this because I don't feel like branch merging should be something that we're going to be doing really often. Different project/solution files in the same branch? Could link the same shared projects easily Build some type of abstraction layer on top of the services, so that no matter what service is being used, it is the same to the web application?

• SP1 of RadControls for WinForms Q1 2010 released, featuring VS2010 and Client Profile support

  As always, Telerik's plans were closely aligned with Microsoft's release schedule, and we were dedicated to provide VS2010 support even before Visual Studio 2010 was officially launched. Now that the first VS2010 launch event is over, here comes the first of many Telerik Service Packs to support VS2010. This RadControls for WinForms release is the first to provide support for the Client Profile, introduced with .NET3.5, and now default when starting new windows forms projects with VS2010. The Client Profile is a smaller version of the.NET Framework that includes only the assemblies needed for deploying client-based applications, which in turn reduces the size of the application. Basically, the Design time classes are excluded from the Client Profile (CP), because they are only needed for designing and not for running an application. • No keyboard input until after GRUB

  I have a computer that I dual boot between Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7. I installed Windows first, and Ubuntu second. When I boot, the GRUB menu comes up, showing me the option to select to boot to Ubuntu at the top of the list, and to boot to Windows at the bottom. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, any key I press on the keyboard (connected by USB) does not get any response, so I can't actually select to boot to anything but Ubuntu (which is the default selection). Once Ubuntu loads and I am at the log in screen, then the keyboard (and mouse) work perfectly normally thereafter. Why would my keyboard not work only during GRUB? And how do I fix it?

• Checking for cross-site scripting vulnerabilities in Perl web applications

  I'm putting together some notes for a dev team on how to write secure Perl code - especially taking into account the current OWASP top 10 web application vulnerabilities. For cross-site scripting I've included information on ensuring that all output to the browser is checked and escaped where necessary, but I'm looking for more automated mechanisms that would mean a developer doesn't have to think about every output statement and, potentially, miss one. Perl's 'taint' function sounds like it should be a help because it distrusts all user input, but it doesn't complain on tainted data being output to the browser. Apart from checking all output statements individually (probably by calling a generic sanitizing function) does anyone have any ideas on how Perl can help with this with existing libraries or techniques?

• Why can't I use Unity 3D on a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series with FGLRX drivers?

  With a brand new install of 12.04 on my Dell Inspiron M5030, Unity 3D appears to load everything but the icons in the top left, and I am unable to click on anything. Unity 2D seems to works fine however. I have done nothing except install Synaptic Package manager and follow this guide to install FGLRX Drivers under Settings ? Additional Drivers, the driver shows as installed and functioning. Also after running: /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p, I get this: OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series OpenGL version string: 3.3.11653 Compatibility Profile Context Not software rendered: yes Not blacklisted: yes GLX fbconfig: yes GLX texture from pixmap: yes GL npot or rect textures: yes GL vertex program: yes GL fragment program: yes GL vertex buffer object: yes GL framebuffer object: yes GL version is 1.4+: yes Unity 3D supported: yes I am unsure as to what the problem is. • AWN displaying window icons even when Display Launchers Only selected

  I'm using AWN with the DockbarX applet.I have Display Launchers Only checked in the awn dock properties, but I'm still getting window icons displaying for certain apps when they're open. Any ideas? Here's a screenshot, note the Firefox icon at the top of the bar (shaded icon) which is part of the DockbarX applet,then note it displaying again at the bottom of the bar (indicating an open window.) You can see from the Launchers list in the dock properties that it isn't in fact a launcher. (The Yahoo and Gmail launchers are standalone Prism apps, they don't use the FF Prism extension. And if I mouse over the bottom FF icon, it does display the title of the open Firefox window, not anything using Prism.) Any ideas?

• How to reset settings when Unity won't finish booting?

  I have a new 12.04 installation and I messed things up after trying to move /home to an NTFS partition, which I later learned was a bad idea. I removed references to the NTFS partition on fstab and created new users on the ext4 / partition. Now I can't get Unity to start up properly for any user. I get the GUI with only three Launch icons (none of which are clickable) and no bar at the top. The keyboard seems to the nonfunctional after I enter my credentials. The interesting thing is that I can boot when I go through recovery mode and select resume. I wonder whether I am creating the new users properly. What is the correct protocol for doing so in order to ensure that they can run Unity?

• Sprite not rotating around its centre after Scaling at its centre

  If I scale a sprite at its centre, then try to rotate it around its centre as well, the rotation does not occur around its centre.
