  • Hadoop: Processing large serialized objects

    I am working on development of an application to process (and merge) several large java serialized objects (size of order GBs) using Hadoop framework. Hadoop stores distributes blocks of a file on different hosts. But as deserialization will require the all the blocks to be present on single host, its gonna hit the performance drastically. How can I deal this situation where different blocks have to cant be individually processed, unlike text files ?

    How do you folks retrieve all objects in code upfront? I figure you can increase performance if you bundle all the model calls together? This makes for a bigger deal, especially if your DB cannot keep everything in memory def hitDBSeperately { get X users ...code get Y users... code get Z users... code } Versus: def hitDBInSingleCall { get X+Y+Z users code for X code for Y... }

  • C++ pointer to objects

    In C++ do you always have initialize a pointer to an object with the new keyword? Or can you just have this too: MyClass *myclass; myclass->DoSomething(); I thought this was a pointer allocated on the stack instead of the heap, but since objects are normally heap allocated, I think my theory is probably faulty?? Please advice.

  • Retaining objects in game iphone

    Hello - I am trying to create a game and have run into what is probably a pretty easy problem to solve. As the player goes through the game, many objects (Vehicle) will be added and removed. The Vehicles get added to an array called currentVehiclesMutableArray. My problem is I cant figure out how to retain a Vehicle so that it remains in the array until I am finished with it.

  • C# Passing objects and list of objects by reference

    I have a delegate that modifies an object. I pass an object to the delegate from a calling method, however the calling method does not pickup these changes. The same code works if I pass a List as the object. I thought all objects were passed by reference so any modifications would be reflected in the calling method?     Sitting in Dominic Delmolino's session at ODTUG (KScope 12). If the session count at conferences is any indication then we will see more and more people start to deploy MapReduce in the database. And yes, that would be with SQL and PL/SQL first and foremost. Both Dominic and our own Bryn Llewellyn are doing MapReduce in the database presentations.  Since I have seen both, I would advice people to first look through Dominic's session to get a good grasp on what mappers do and what reducers do, then dive into Bryn's for a bunch of PL/SQL example. The thing I like about Dominic's is the last slide (a recursive WITH statement) to do this in SQL... Now I am hoping that next year we will see tools vendors show off how they work with Hadoop and MapReduce (at least talking about the concepts!!).

  • Better data structure for a game like Bubble Witch

    I'm implementing a bubble-witch-like game (http://www.king.com/games/puzzle-games/bubble-witch/), and I was thinking on what's the better way to store the "bubbles" and to work with. I thought of using graphs, but that might be too complex for a trivial thing. Thought of a matrix, just like a tile map, but that might get too 'workaroundy'. I don't know.   • How to avoid damage to ISO archives?

    So had a problem where a 16GB ISO was damaged(likely my own fault using standard windows copy dialog instead of proper copy tool like robocopy with verification turned on). It took several hours but i managed to restore the ISO(basicly i rebuilt the damaged parts and recompiled).Namely some .rar archives inside it were unreadable but the ISO itself was readable. So im wondering how can i further protect something like this from happening again?.Obviously proper copy tool but mayble something else?.Perhaps set as "read only" could help?.I generally don't move these files a lot and if i need to acces them then it's only for opening/extracting.

    Hi, My Ubuntu 10.10 just crashed(probably due to hardware error and in the end I was getting error like Unknown filesystem ..... grub> .. GRUB console before i could take some action) and i reinstalled the same version form USB stick. I had ubuntu installed in ext4 file system and I am also having the same filesystem in the same hard disk on different drive. When I try to access my previous filesystem, i get error Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda6, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so I had some important files in the previous volume, I don't know how to retrieve them. And what are the chances that I would get the same outcome (hardware error)? Please help me!

  • Wiped data, and duplicated folders into files.

    Something weird happened today, and I dont know how. Within a folder, all folders have a file by the same name, with a colon appended to it. And all the files from the most inner-most directory in my home, have been dumped to ~, with a size of 0 bytes. I have not executed any scripts or anything. I was just checking out some easter eggs, namely the gegls from outer space and free the fish and was away from the computer and was logged because of the screensaver. I couldnt log-back in with my password, so I just reset the PC, and while booting, the PC went into a drive check. BUT, IIRC, i saw the duplicate "folder files" before I had logged out, so thats not the reason! All the files have a timestamp of 14 Jan. Also, the contents of my eclipse folder have been dumped into ~. Right down to the jars and ini files. HELP!

  • What is the simplest and fastest way to transfer large file through a Windows network?

    I have a Window Server 2000 machine running MS SQL Server that stores over 20GB of data. The database is backed-up every day to the second harddrive. I want to transfer those backup files to another computer to build another test server and for recovery practicing. (the backup never actually got restored for almost 5 years. Don't tell my boss about that!) I have trouble transfering that huge file through the network. I've tried plain network copy, apache download, and ftp. Any method I tried end up failing when the amount of data transfered reach 2GB. The last time that I successfully transfered the file, it was through a usb attached external harddrive. But I want to perform this task routinely and preferably automatically. Wonder what is the most pragmatic approach for this situation ?

    I deployed a project some days ago that allow to extract some medical articles using the results of a questionnaire completed by a user. For instance, if I reply on questionnaire I'm affected by Diabetes type 2 and I'm a smoker, my algorithm extracts all articles related to diabetes bubbling up all articles contains information about Diabetes type 2 and smoking. Basically we created a list of topic and, for every topic we define a kind of "guideline" that allows to extract and order informations for a user. I'm quite sure there are some better way to put on relationship two content but I was not able to find them on network. Could you suggest my a model, algorithm or paper to better understand this kind of problem and that helps me to find a faster, and more accurate way to extract information for an user?
