  • Use WMI to detect a USB drive was connected, regardless of whether it was mounted?

    I am writing a script that uses MS KB 823732 to temporarily prevent users from plugging in new USB storage devices. This works fine, and the HKLM\...\Services\UsbStor registry key successfully blocks newly-connected devices from being accessed. Is there a WMI event that will tell me that a drive was connected, regardless of whether it was mounted? I tried querying for __InstanceCreationEvent but that is apparently raised only after the drive is mounted and made available, which doesn't fit my requirements.

  • Best format for backing up data in Blu Ray

    We are in the process of backing up our hard drives to Blu Rays. I am creating tar.gz files and burning them to Blu Ray. Is it possible to use a simple (preferably Python-based) solution for creating images of those tar.gz files, of a predetermined size (to fit in the Blu Ray), and simply burn this images to the disc? Do you have any other approach for creating physical back-up of your hard drives?

  • Seeking (somewhat) better explanations about supporting > 2.1 TB hard drives.

    Today while Googling about I stumbled across posts claiming that Seagate plans to ship a 3TB drive sometime later in 2010. Unfortunately, the stuff I looked at all seemed to contain tidbits of info which I didn't think fit together properly. (I would link to some examples, but I'm only allowed 1 link per post at the moment). Now I really don't have any "need" to better understand the underlying tedious details of this. I am just curious. And confused. So ... some questions I'm hoping someone better informed than I might answer. The talk about a potential addressing problem in both the hardware and the software confused me. The assertion is that something called something called Long LBA addressing (LLBA) is needed in the Command Descriptor Block as a way to get around the current limits to access a hard drive bigger than ~2.1 (or ~2.2?) TB. OK, fine. But I thought the last time this problem came up it was solved by extending the length of the LBA field from 28 to 48 bits. (Remember this website? www.48bitlba.com) A 6 byte LBA is clearly large enough, so what's up with this LLBA talk. I thought this was all fixed back by Win XP SP2, if not sooner? And certainly all the hardware should be up to the task, shouldn't it? The real problem as I understand it with drives much bigger than 2 TB are the 4 byte LBA fields in the Master Boot Record (MBR) used to partition just about all hard drives at the moment. The most likely solution is to migrate to Intel's GUID Partition Table (GPT). A GPT uses 8 byte fields for the LBA. What I don't understand in this context is what is the problem with booting say Windows from a 3TB drive that uses a GPT. Granted, the current PC BIOS wouldn't know how to recognize or work with a GPT. But every GPT comes with a so-called "Safety" or "Guarding" MBR in sector 0.Apple already uses a hybrid version of the MBR to allow them to boot Windows on their Intel Macs (aka Boot Camp). Couldn't something similar be done to allow the PC BIOS to recognize and boot from a partition in, say, the first 1 GB of a 3GB or larger drive? I've got more questions such as where do 4K sectors fit into all of this. But it's probably time I just shut up and posted this. ;-) -irrational john

  • Two Different nVidia Cards, One as Graphics, One as Physics - Possible?

    Hey guys, Soon I will have a brand new Geforce GTX 285 to replace my current 8800GT. Will it be possible to move my 8800GT to another PCIX slot, put the GTX 285 into the primary slot and use the nVidia software to make the 8800GT do physics? I have enough PCIX slots on my motherboard (4). The GTX 285 will take up 2, so the 8800GT should fit in the 3rd. If anyone knows if this is possible, I would be grateful to be educated!

  • PowerPoint slide resolution? (Optimizing video playback)

    In PowerPoint 2007, there seems to be no way of changing the resolution slide (only the aspect ratio and the output resolution can be chnaged?). If this is the case, then how do I optimize an inserted video for playback using an HD projector? Can I simply insert a video at high resolution and scale it down to fit the slide? Will these extra pixels come to use if the output resolution is high? Thanks!

  • configuring linux console email client to check attachments

    I need to configure a IMAP4 capable (console-based) email client to - check and edit the name of an attachment ("contains umlauts?" - change character ä to ae) - delete emails that don't fit certain requirements (not PDF, DOC,... not from domain xyz.com) Whether the client can do everything by itself or can just trigger a script on incoming mail doesn't matter. Anyone have an idea with mail client would be suitable for such a task?

    I sometimes get .mp4 and other video formats whose aspect ratio is clearly off What apps do you use to reconvert such videos to an aspect ratio better suited to to fit either a regular desktop or LCD screen size? Hopefully with little or no loss of audio/video quality Any instructions on best settings to use would be very welcome. I have so far mostly used vlc which came off with less-than-ideal results.   • Software for browsing/searching SQL Server transaction logs

    I'd like to know whether there is any piece of software that will allow the browsing/searching of SQL Server transaction logs (any version). We've previously used Lumigent Log Explorer against SQL Server 2000 which fulfilled our need, but the product no longer exists and Lumigent's closest replacement doesn't appear to support SQL 2008 (according to the data sheet). I've discovered something called ApexSQL Audit which may fit the bill, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of it, how it compares with Log Explorer, and whether there are any good alternatives out there.     I am a bit confused with HTTP lately. Some facts are that TCP can operate connection orientated or connectionless this I understand. TCP though is connection-oriented while UDP is connectionless which is used when the message itself can be fit into a single message. Question: If HTTP uses TCP, and TCP provides reliable conjnections for multiple message excahnge, and HTTP is said to be connectionless then how is this possible? TCP is connection-oriented? So how is HTTP connectionless????
