• Is it possible to use Linux to route between my office (which uses IPSec) and home network?

  First of all, apologies if this seems vague - I'm not an admin of anything more than a home network. I have a Ubuntu box sitting on my network which does various odd tasks for me - svn serving, some file serving, Apache/MySQL/PHP which is all raring to go. I've started a new job and at the moment I'm using ShrewSoft VPN software to establish a VPN link to the office as I need it. I'd prefer to have something always running on my home network just for convenience. My home modem/router doesn't support holding a VPN connection open. What I would like to do is set up my Linux box to hold open a VPN connection to my office and keep it open permanently, and then all applicable traffic for the office be routed through this box. I'm not sure if this is possible, or how to configure the routing on the desktop PCs (Windows 7). Would appreciate any guides, etc that could help me out.

• Non-ECC memory with ZFS: a stupid idea?

  I'm the proud new owner of an HP Proliant Microserver N40L, and planning to upgrade the (obviously paltry 2 GB of) memory to the maximum of 16 GB. (Theoretically 8 GB is the limit, but empirically 16 GB has been shown to work.) Some guides advise that ECC memory is not that important, but I'm not so sure I believe this. I've installed FreeNAS and am planning to add ZFS volumes as soon as my new hard drives arrive. Would it be stupid to skimp and get non-ECC memory for a ZFS-based NAS? If it's necessary, then I'll bite the bullet, but if it's just paranoia, then I'll probably skip it.

• Cisco training basic, entry, ASA/PIX. Help to understand network

  I need to learn how to configure Cisco ASA/PIX boxes within my network. I have the task to impliment a new ASA 5505 into a new site we purchased. I have over 9 devices linking my sites together and with no support from the previous IT company im finding it hard to get to terms with what they can do and what they are currently doing. I know there are hundreds of guides how to configure them but into an existing environment? can anyone recommend courses within the UK that can help me? Im not much of a book reader, i would need to be able to manage my network after. also, should i seek external contracts to support these devices? as they are critical for our work. thanks

I did have a guide of this but unfortunately the link broke. But what i understood was that I'd be in need of a windows 2000 disc for this to work. • 2010 MBP HD speed sanity check?

  I have a 2010 MBP with the 7200 rpm hard drive. I was copying a 2.1GB file, and noticed read/write speeds of around 20MB/s. Is that reasonable? Seems slow to me.... What is the proper way to benchmark a HD on OS X? Googling I see xbench, but that hasn't been updated in years. I also see some guides for using the command line. The goal would be to benchmark my drive and then compare the results to some official scores that the drive should be getting.

• Is it possible to upgrade HTC HD2 to Windows Mobile 7? [closed]

  I have HD2 over one year and I have to say it was pretty wrong purchase. Both HTC HW and MS OS (Windows Mobile 6.5) are somehow crappy. I had several crashes wich resulted in hard reset (no flashing and almost no additionally installed applications) and phone was under repair two times (2x replaced motherboard and 1x replaced dislay). After these reapirs at least HW works pretty well but OS is still bad. I would like to upgrade the phone to Windows Mobile 7. I'm not looking for some flashing (I already saw some guides). I'm ready to pay for upgrade to have it legal. Is it possible? Buying new phone just to have SW upgrade is ridiculous. Btw. My primary phone is iPhone 4 and I think on iPhone 3GS it is possible to upgrade OS iOS 4 so I would like to see similar possibility with Windows Mobile.

  I was looking at Vsphere to automatically load balance my apache web servers, and mysql servers but will this actually do the job? I know it says it does auto load balancing but not actually sure it quite means what I want to achieve. Is there an easier way to set up a php-apache and mysql cluster within virtual machines? Or are there any guides to clustering? (I have tried googling without much luck) Any help towards understanding/setting up clustering and load balancing within virtual machines appreciated.

  What is the correct way to set up sshwindows for SSH key authentication? Does the user need to be created in Windows first or can a login be inserted into passwd without a Windows equivalent? I've searched on Google and have tried the tutorials and quick start guides. So far, exactly 0 have worked. None pointed out that to work in Windows 2008 R2, you need to change the properties of cygrunsrv.exe to "Windows XP SP3" compability mode to even get past the service startup "error 1067". Although it is running, no amount of configuration allowed me to log on to the SFTP server, even though I tried (from another machine): same user account added using "mkpasswd" + windows password same user account added using "mkpasswd" + public ssh key (added to /home/theuser/.ssh) On Windows 2003 R2 (a different attempt), the service would crash every time it started up. • Change Apache DocumentDirectory path in trueCrypt partition

  Hello, I'm recently moving from windows to linux, so I've setup my machine to dual boot Windows7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I was able to successfully setup Apache on the Ubuntu partition, but I need to move the DocumentRoot since my websites are on a TrueCrypt partition that is in another hard drive so I can have them accessible in both OS. I followed some guides on how to change the path for the DocumentRoot so I end up modifiying the default file at /etc/apache2/sites-available DocumentRoot /media/truecrypt1/www <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory /media/truecrypt1/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> Those are the lines that I've changed, but now when I go to localhost I always get the Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. • Install XP over Ubuntu. (Flash Drive)

  My girlfriend needs to install Windows XP over Ubuntu on her PC, because she need to run some software that Wine and a visual machine can't handle as well as the 'real' thing. Problem is, it seems very difficult to make a bootable flash drive with the files from a XP .iso from Ubuntu. All the guides I could find was about Windows 7, formatting the USB as NTFS, then use UNetbootin to extract the files to the USB. Problem is, that only works with 7, not XP. Does anyone know how I can make a bootable XP flash drive? Thanks! It's really important.

• Installing Solaris 10 on sunT5220 - ZFS/UFS raid 10?

  I am in a bit of a time crunch, and need to get two T5220's built. We were very happy to see two boxes in our aged inventory which had 8 HDD's each, but didn't think to check if they were running hardware RAID or not. Turns out that they aren't. When we install, we are given the option to use UFS or ZFS, but when we select a place to install we're only given the option of installing on one single disk. Is it possible to create a software raid 10 across all of the disks and install the OS on that? Sorry if any lingo is wrong, I'm not really a Sun guy and our guru is out of town right now. Any help would be really appreciated! Note: Most of the guides I've found on google entail installing the OS on a single disk, and then creating a separate RAID 10 on other disks. We would actually like the OS to reside on the RAID 10. Hope that clarifies things.

• How can I pin point a USB file transfer bottleneck in Unix?

  I'm experiencing very slow data transfer speeds over USB 2.0 on my nix box and was wondering how I can pin-point the cause of the problem. I've looked into iotop and top but the cpu and mem figures look normal (compared to guides I have checked). The box which is affected is Ubuntu 12.04 32bit Server running on an Asus EEE 701 2G model and I am transferring from the OS over USB 2.0 to an external HDD (which transfers at 30MB/s+ on Windows 7 on other machine). I get rsync write speeds of 1MB/s from OS to USB HDD which seems ridiculously slow. These speeds are consistent with other USB HDDs and sticks.

At the end of evaluation, it turns this information into a report, which it sends to the server (if requested). And at the end of evaluation puppet agent would generate a report and sent the report to the master. Is there a way to get real-time status of evaluation phase and post them to a remote logcollector? • How to mount a iSCSI/SAN storage drive to a stable device name (one that can't change on re-connect)?

  We need stable device paths for our Twinstrata SAN drives. Many guides for setting up iSCSI connectors simply say to use a device path like /dev/sda or /dev/sdb. This is far from correct, I doubt that any setup exists that would be happy to have its device name suddenly change (from /dev/sda to /dev/sdb for example). The fix I found was to install multipath and start a multipathd on boot which then provides a stable mapping between the storage's WWID to a device path like this /dev/mapper/firebird_database. This is a method described in the CentOS/RedHat here: http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.1/DM_Multipath/setup_procedure.html. This seems a little complicated though. We noticed that it is common to see UUIDs appear in fstab on new installs. So, the question is, why do we need an external program (multipathd) running to provide a stable device mount? Should there be a way to provide the WWID directly in /etc/fstab?

• Windows 8 Remote Desktop only allows one user at a time?

  I tried connecting to Windows 8 using its built-in Remote Desktop feature, but for some inexplicable reason, it requires that no users are logged in on the target machine before a remote user can log in. This has never been a problem with rdesktop on Unixen; I could rdesktop from as many machines as I wanted and any logged-in users would never notice a thing. What's the problem with Windows? Any way to allow concurrent local and remote logins to a Windows 8 machine without hacks or cracks? The "guides" on how to do this that show up in the Google results all suggest replacing a system DLL with a hacked one, but that's not acceptable.

• Proxy server modifying request/response upon pass through

  I would like to set up a non-transparent proxy server that will selectively modify HTTP requests and responses as it passes them through. The motivation for wanting to modify the data on the fly and not at the original source are not part of the question. I'm hoping there is a solution which allows the modification scripts to be written in a mainstream programming language. I am aware of guides for Squid which allow you to flip images etc on the way through but I was hoping for a slightly more established and less hackish solution. Does anyone know of an established open source project or environment (Any major platform) which would allow me to script in arbitrary modifications to the data being passed through?

• RAID 1 in ubuntu 12.04

  Right now I have a small file server to which I have loaded ubuntu 12.04 desktop on a small 160gb harddrive. This harddrive is the primary drive from which the OS boots. I want to move all my data to my file server so it can be shared on the network (contain in 2x2TB harddrives in my desktop. The 2TB drivers are in raid 1 (hardware). I simply want to move them to the file server and set it up so that they are in software raid 1. If at all possible I'd like to be able to do this without losing any info on the drives. I've searched around and the guides i find describe raiding drives for boot driver, but these wouldn't be boot drives just regular storage drives. If someone could tell me how to perform this or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

  I need to know how to set up a local webDav server on my PC so that goodreader on ipad can automatically sync with it over the local wifi network? I am really a rookie when it comes to setting up a web server and have tried various guides on the internet. I tried setting up a webdav server using IIS and forwarded the required ports and enabled webdav publishing but goodreader can find it in the local wifi network automatically nor is it able to connect even after manually entering the credendtials. • How to undo an hg merge? (I think.)

  I'm new to collaborating with Mercurial. My situation: Another programmer changed rev 1 of a file to replace 4-space indents with 2-space indent. (I.e. changed every line.) Call that rev 2, pushed to the remote repo. I've committed substantive changes rev 1 with various code changes in my local workspace. Call that rev 3. I've hg pulled and hg mergeed without a clear idea of what was going on. The conflicts are myriad and not really substantive. So I really wish I'd changed my local repo to 2-space indents before merging; then the merge will be trivial (i'm supposing). But I can't seem to back up. I think I need to hg update -r 3 but it says abort: outstanding uncommitted merges. How can I undo the merge, changes spacing in my local repo, and remerge?

• Is there a way to mark up code to tell ReSharper not to format it?

  I quite often use the ReSharper "Clean Up Code" command to format my code to our coding style before checking it into source control. This works well in general, but some bits of code are better formatted manually (eg. because of the indenting rules in ReSharper, things like chained linq methods or multi-line ternary operators have a strange indent that pushes them way to the right). Is there any way to mark up parts of a file to tell ReSharper not to format that area? I'm hoping for some kind of markup similar to how ReSharper suppresses other warnings/features. If not, is there some way of changing a combination of settings to get ReSharper to format the indenting correctly? EDIT: I have found this post from the ReSharper forums that says that generated code sections (as defined in the ReSharper options page) are ignored in code cleanup. Having tried it though, it doesn't seem to get ignored.
