• x11 Remote Desktop with Ubuntu 12.04

  When I was running Debian, I was able to start a remote session over x11 by just typing gnome-session However, with Ubuntu 12.04, this only seems to result in my desktop and background being forwarded over x11 -- the top bar (where the clock is) and dock are both missing. I tried starting all of unity by executing unity, but that just resulted in a segfault. How can I start a Unity 2D session over x11? Edit: I prefer x11 as I need to tunnel the connection over 2 other servers. I would need to do a good amount of port forwarding within SSH to get any other connections back. Of course, if someone has any other suggestions, I'm willing to listen.

• Civilization 4: time in own scenario runs up too quickly.

  In Civilization 4 (Beyond the Sword) I started making a scenario that focuses on the colonization of North America. For added realism, I set the StartYear=1780. Everytime I run the scenario, the time runs up far too quickly–probably because I set Era=ERA_ANCIENT and GameTurn=0–so that after just twenty turns the clock nears present day. I'm not really sure how to go fix this, other than by playing an actual marathon game from the start up to the year 1780 and copy over the values. Is there any way to calculate/know the right values for my scenario?

  I seem to recall Unity's Random is automatically seeded; checking the documentation it doesn't say it outright, but a certain interpretation of their words might seem to imply it. The seed is normally set from some arbitrary value like the system clock before the random number functions are used. This prevents the same run of values from occurring each time a game is played and thus avoids predictable gameplay. However, it is sometimes useful to produce the same run of pseudo-random values on demand by setting the seed yourself. (emphasis added)

• choppy streaming audio

  I could use some help troubleshooting choppy streaming audio. The problem is jerky playback regardless of audio or video with audio. Both Chromium and Firefox have the problem, however files played directly on the machine with Rhythmbox sound just fine. I'm running 12.04 LTS on a C2D T9300. • Programming for Digital frames

  A project has recently come to my attention but i have no idea where to start or even if its possible. The idea revolves around programming a clock that is displayed inside a digital photo frame. The user would then be able to put different pictures corresponding to different times inside a usb pen for example, which would load as soon as you put the usb in. The project itself would be a really neat project - if it was just on a computer. I have no idea if what im talking about it even possible on a digital photo frame and if it is what language? Anyone who has any input at all would be great. My current idea is to maybe have a small device at the back, SSD, that runs the program through a screen, completely by passing standard digital photo frames, again though i dont know how to begin with this. And yes ive tried google (although it helps to know what to google).

• Wubi doesn't install Ubuntu

  I've tried 4 times on 2 different computers. After downloading wubi, and installing Ubuntu inside Windows XP, I restart and get the dual boot screen. I choose Ubuntu, and then nothing, my screen flashes for a few minutes with the Ubuntu colors. I restart and go to Ubuntu recovery, where it says "shadow passwords now on" and "clock off by a day-Fixed". I restart to only get the same thing, but Xubuntu, in stalled on one, but it's Ubuntu I want to try. Any thoughts ??

• Distorted text in programs

  I've installed Ubuntu 11 with gnome and in some point the text in the programs becomes unreadable like this. It's not only the text, but even the desktop background looks awful. I've tried to add section in xorg.conf, but it didn't helped out. • 11.04 Wireless is disabled by hardware switch Hp Compaq nc6220

  Here is some backstory if it is helpful: I had Windows Vista on my computer and I wanted to use wubi to install Ubuntu, everything was fine until I booted into the OS. It said my wireless was disabled by a Hardware Switch. So I booted back into Vista and it disabled there too. I have gotten rid of vista and installed 11.04 instead. It still has this error and as far as I know there is no switch anywhere and the fn keys do nothing. • What is the current frequency of my processor (CPU-Z equivalent)?

  Is there a ubuntu program like CPU-Z which will show me the actual frequency of my processor? I do a fair amount of scientific computing which leads to me running my programs for up to 10 hrs. To alleviate this problem a little I overclock my CPU. However I can't see what the actual clock of my processor from within ubuntu which means I either have to restart and look at the bios or load into windows. If there was an applet or command line command to find out this information it would be very helpful. Thanks for your help

• Triple Monitor Setup with Nvidia and Compiz

  I have a triple monitor setup with two video cards on Ubuntu 10.04. I have the monitors and graphics cards currently setup as follows: Nvidia Geforce 210 #1 - 1920x1080 Monitor (Twinview) [Center - Monitor #1] - 1920x1080 Monitor (Twinview) [Right - Monitor #2] Nvidia Geforce 210 #2 - 1920x1080 Monitor (Separate X Screen) [Left - Monitor #3] This works fine, except when I open a program, it shows up in between monitor #1 and #2 - meaning I have to drag it to one screen before I can use the window. Gnome2's gnome-panel also does not work on the twinview setup; it spans between both monitors, but it does not redraw (ex: the clock never changes). In addition, when I maximize an application, it spans both monitors, which is not acceptable. When I enable Xinerama for my setup, gnome-panel no longer spans two monitors, and applications maximize as expected, but compiz does not work, as X11 compositing is not available. The lack of desktop compositing causes problems with dragging windows between screens (redraws take forever). Is there anything I can do to fix these issues without opting for different graphics cards?

• Why can't I access hw:1,0 until gstreamer-properties is run once?

  Not necessarily an Ubuntu-specific question but I wasn't sure where else to ask. I have an AverMedia DVD EZMaker 7 which plugs into USB and works well on Ubuntu 12.04. I downloaded and installed the official drivers without error. However, when I try: gst-launch alsasrc device="hw:1,0" ! alsasink device="hw:0,0" it tells me: Setting pipeline to PAUSED ... Pipeline is live and does not need PREROLL ... Setting pipeline to PLAYING ... New clock: GstAudioSrcClock which is the normal output, however there is no audible sound. Trying the command again doesn't help. If I run gstreamer-properties and close it right away (don't need to touch any controls), THEN the gst-launch command works. If I unplug the device and plug it back in or restart the computer, I have to run gstreamer-properties again. What is gstreamer-properties doing that enables the audio?

• Get and install Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS driver

  Recently, I changed my OS kernel from 10.04 to 11.10 (bugs), but after doing it, the video driver for the 8400 GS disappeared (was there in 10.04). I worked out the same procedure I did to install it in 10.04, mainly, sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-current sudo apt-get --purge autoremove sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get -y install nvidia-current but it didn't work even though the commands seemed to install the driver without problems. • After power manager reinstall

  I had checking battery state hanging I solved it with the help of an answer from this site: sudo apt-get --reinstall install gnome-power-manager But now my left windows bar is rigid, it does not disappear on wide screen. EDIT Also in most of applications, characters are white. What could be the problem? and what should I do? 2ND EDIT My ubuntu is 12.04 LTS. I was trying to install some packages for dependencies of allegro game development library, one of the packages was libwxgtk2.8-0, after that a red cross appeared near user name and clock. Then computer became frozen and i had to remove my battery. I know it is a very bad thing. Then when i try to restart my computer, it could not start, it was waiting on black screen with line: Checking battery state... Then i run the above command. Computer could start but characters are white.

• Android Java: Way to effectively pause system time while debugging?

  In my project, I call nanoTime and use that to get a deltaTime which I pass to my entities and animations. However, while debugging (for example, stepping through my code), the system time on my phone is happily chugging along, so it's impossible to look at, say, two sequential frames of data in the debugger (since by the time I'm done looking at the first frame, the system time has continued to move ahead by seconds or even minutes). Is there a programming practice or method to pause the system clock (or a way for my code to intercept and fake my deltaTime) whenever I pause execution from the debugger? Additional Information: I'm using Eclipse Classic with the ADT plugin and a Samsung SII, coding in Java. • Developing a search algorithm

  I want to create a basic search engine, and I want you to give me some ideas how to filter out the best results for my visitors. I have three fields regarding a product the user can search in: Title Category Description I came up with these ideas and I ask you to either competently criticize them or add to them. If the search term occurs in all three fields it should be among the first results. If it is in two of the fields it is below the results of 1. Combine the amount of occurences and output a value in per cent. For instance if in all fields together the term clock appeared 50 times and in all fields together there are 200 words, then the per cent value is 50/200*100 = 25%. Another product entry amounts to say 20% so product one having 25% is listed before product two having 20%.

• Network doesn't work after upgrading to 13.10

  I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10, and a number of things stopped working. Most importantly, I don't have internet access anymore. When I go to the network settings, I receive the following error: The system network services are not compatible with this version. The only settings that show up in the network settings are the proxy settings. I tried sudo service network-manager start and sudo service network-manager restart, but it told me the service was already running. In addition, the menu bar is missing all of the indicators (such as keyboard layout, sound, network, clock, and the gear icon). Is this related or a separate issue?

• Found a better solution to a problem at work - should I deter from posting the code snippet online?

  I think most of us, programmers, used Stack Overflow to solve every day problems: looked for an efficient algorithm to do something. Now imagine a situation: you have a problem to solve. Googled a bit, found a StackOverflow question but you are not really satisfied with the answers so far. So you have to do your own research: you need to do it because you want it in the company's app. Eventually after some hours you have found the better solution. You're happy, you added it to the company's code base, then you want to submit your answer with a code snippet (just several lines) to the question you've found before to help others too. But wait: the company's software is closed source, and you worked on it on the clock. So does this mean I shouldn't post the answer neither at work nor at home to that question in the rest of my life, because I solved it at work, and the company owns that piece of code?

• Ubuntu 11.10 boot: xhost: unable to open display

  I've had this papercut for a while now, it's time it was fixed. When I boot up Ubuntu, choosing "Ubuntu...generic" from the grub screen, Ubuntu fails to load. It just sits at the driver/module loading screen. What seems to be the most significant line in this output is "xhost: unable to open display" If I choose "Ubuntu...(recovery mode)" from grub then it loads OK. I don't get why this is. Out of interest I tried enabling boot error logging with #/etc/default/bootlogd BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=Yes but I'm not seeing anything in that file. ETA: I've had this problem since fresh install of 11.10. • iPhone Datepicker plays 'tick' sound

  Hey guys, Does any of you know what event I can tap into on the DatePicker when the wheel moves. I want to play a sound (got sound code) as the wheel spin. Just like the timer set picker in Apple's clock app. All that is there is a single event for ValueChanges which only fires once, at the end of a wheel spin. Thanks in advance
