  Hi there. I know this is hard question, and possibly not to be answered here, but if there is some article, or more you know about, please post a link. About books, its sad but many great computer books cannot be bought in my country. So, you can find many articles online, which says how memory was mapped back in pre x386 CPU. How there was explicit holes ready for MMIO BIOS, Video BIOS, etc. How there was A20 line for allowing higher memory access etc. Problem is, time changed. Today BIOSes are many times larger, and pure x86 16bit mode is used for booting and ROM flashing only. OS ignore BIOS as they access everything using drivers. And I just want to know, how it works today. I know not so specific question, but I read OS dev wiki, many articles, but all refering to days before massive usage of pure 32bit CPUs.

  I'm using Puppet to install ufdbGuard which requires Squid 2.7 (which is correctly installed and working properly). • How can I turn off font-antialiasing only for gnome-terminal, but not for other applications?

  I'm running GNOME (gnome-session under xmonad). I want to turn off antialiasing (i.e. use monochrome mode) for fonts in gnome-terminal. But I want to retain antialiasing for other applications, like Firefox. Is this possible? Antialiasing is great and almost necessary for using Firefox or Chrome. But it makes the fonts in gnome-terminal blurry at sizes around 12 or smaller. Otherwise, I'll just have to use xterm, which seems not to anti-alias its fonts under any circumstances.

This offline address list will not be generated. - Default Offline Address List When you preview the Global Address list within Exchange Systems Manager all is fine. Turning off cached mode on Outllok clients still errors Public fiolders / System folders are fine OABINTEG detects no issues, Pfdavadmin has checked all DACL The GAL and OAB have been deleted / recreated several times (With differnt names) DCDIAG, NETDIAG, ExchangeBPA all run without error Exhausted Google links diagnosing this issue, any suggestions?

• Windows 7 connect to Lion file sharing

  Trying to access my Mac from a Windows 7 computer, I fail with the infamous error 86 incorrect password. Now this appears to be a well-known problem with countless threads on the internet giving as many "solutions" as there are discussion threads about it (mostly ranging from installing third-party commercial samba servers, to switching to some other protocol, to compiling a plain-vanilla Samba installation - the latter which I will probably do when I give up this :) ) I am stubborn, and I believe there must be some problem here that can be solved or worked around, but there is surprisingly little detail about this problem. It appears to have something to do with a mismatch of authentication methods. • Apache .htaccess problem: No input file specified.

  Hello Everyone, Can someone help me with this. I'm feeling like I've been hitting my head against a wall for over 2 hrs now. I've got Apache 2.2.8 + PHP 5.2.6 installed on my machine and the .htacces with code below works fine, no errors. RewriteEngine on RewriteCond $1 !^(index\.php|css|gfx|js|swf|robots\.txt|favicon\.ico) RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /index.php/$1 [L] The same code on my hosting provider server gives me a 404 error code and outputs only: No input file specified. index.php IS there. I know they have Apache installed (cannot find version info anywhere) and they're running PHP v5.2.8. I'm on windows xp 64-bit, they're running some Linux and php in cgi/fastcgi mode. Can anyone suggest what could be the problem? PS. if that's important that's for CodeIgniter to work with friendly URLs.

  I am trying to migrate from Notepad++ to vi. In N++, I constantly rely on block edit (or "column mode"), as it is a great increase in productivity: I can select a rectangular area of text by pressing ALT before marking with the mouse, and copy, move, paste the rectangular area anywhere. Also, it is possible to drag the cursor vertically so that I can type simulatenously on several subsequent lines at the same time. Is there any similar functionality for vi? If yes, how can I do that?

• Cannot access any remote resource after connecting to Cisco VPN on Vista

  I have installed Cisco vpn client version 5.0.07.0290 on Vista Business SP2. I am able to successfully connnect to the vpn. But after connecting I am not able to access any resource in the vpn (like database, other computers in the network etc.). I have tried the following without any success : Older versions of the client Other vpn clients like Shrewsoft : same issue as the cisco vpn client Disabled Internet Connection Sharing service Installed the client in the root administrator account Run the installer as administrator Run the vpngui and ipsecdialer in XP compatibility mode and as administrator I am not sure how to troubleshoot this issue. Can somebody please help me in troubleshooting this issue? P.S : I've Zonealarm firewall, can that be an issue?

  I've installed Java 7 on my Mac (10.7.5), but in the terminal there is still java 6. java version "1.6.0_37" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode) There will be no problem with the version 6 on terminal, if I always got that errors when I tried to install a java application (LatexDraw): : CGContextGetCTM: invalid context 0x0 : CGContextSetBaseCTM: invalid context 0x0 : CGContextGetCTM: invalid context 0x0 : CGContextSetBaseCTM: invalid context 0x0 The problem is related to instability of java 6 inferred from this link I've read this installed-java-7-on-mac-osx-but-terminal-is-still-using-version-6 and also try to change my Java version by using export JAVA_HOME="/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home", but in my folder /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions, there is no version 1.7, only versions under 1.6 ??? So, how can I fix this issue?

• International Dvorak keyboard doesn't trigger hot-keys

  I'm using the Engilsh-Dvorak keyboard-layout; My second keyboard language is Hebrew, which has nothing to do with Dvorak but the hot keys (e.g if I'm writing a document in Hebrew and want to make some bold text using Ctrl+b). The default Hebrew keyboard that comes with Windows (7 and below) has a shift mode which matches each Hebrew character with its matching English QWERTY character ). Obviously I'd want to use the Dvorak corresponding key rather than the QWERTY one, so I created a Hebrew-Dvorak keyboard with a software called Keyboard Layout Manager (KLM) which creates new keyboard layouts DLLs. It works just fine for the shift key, however, Ctrl-key triggered hot-keys (e.g Ctrl+l in FF) are being matched to the corresponding QWERTY key. I've examined the properly working English-Dvorak layout using KLM and in it's "Ctrl+ pressed" view, there isn't any character that's matched to any key but still I tried to encode the Hebrew Ctrl+ pressed keys to work with their matching Dvorak keys, yet it had no effect.

• How do I stop track changes from turning on automatically in Word 2007

  Whenever I open an existing document in Word 2007 (on Windows XP), word turns on track changes, and changes the display mode to "Final" (that is, not "Final Showing Markup" -- so I often don't even notice track changes is on if I don't remember to pay attention. This happens for ALL existing documents, and doesn't happen for new documents. I can't find any option in the configuration that would control this behavior. I would like to restore the original/default behavior where documents are opening with Track Changes off, and in "Final showing markup" display. Steps to Reproduce Open Word 2007. Create a new document. Verify that track changes is off. Save the document and close Word. Open the document (either directly or through Word). Track changes is now on. Any ideas?

• Extract registry key from NTBackup System State backup

  A Windows Server 2003 machine died recently but I need some information that was contained in the now-defunct server's registry. I have a "System State" backup file created by the Windows Server 2003 built-in backup program (NTBackup.exe). Is there any way to extract a key/value out of the backup file? I might be able do a Win2003 install on a similar machine then do a system-state restore but that's a lot of effort and I don't know for certain that the system-state restore will work on a different spec machine. (Would it work if I booted up in 'safe mode'?) But I'd really rather just get at the data straight out of the NTBackup file zip-file-esque styles if that's possible.

• VIM - how to substitute a word in-place?

For example, after yanking some word by pressing yw and then I set a cursor on some other word, then I would like to press something so that substitution will happen. (e.g. SOME_KEYw where w is really w and SOME_KEY is some key). I would not like to switch into Insert Mode. I am not interested in :%s/oldword/newword/gc solution. • Can the expect utility handle a case where the process it spawns also spawns a sub process?

  I'm trying to use expect to handle rsync over an ssh shell, but it gets stuck. If I run my rsync command it works (simplified here): It prompts me for my password and copies files to the server: rsync -e ssh -<other_params> If I then enclose that in expect: expect -d -c "spawn rsync -e ssh -<other_params>" -c "expect password:" -c "send mypass\r" It does not execute properly, the program exists and no files are copied. Even the debug mode isn't giving many clues. My best guess is that rsync is spawning the ssh process, and the ssh process is what needs to be interacted with, but send is picking up the rsync process id and sending the input there. Any thoughts?

  I've an TL-WN951N (AR5416+AR5008) using ath9k module running an hostapd and a dhcp for it. So hostapd starts fine: $ hostapd wifi.test Configuration file: wifi.test Using interface int1 with hwaddr f4:ec:38:9b:d4:93 and ssid 'test' hostapd.conf: interface=int1 driver=nl80211 ssid=test channel=1 But nobody seems to find it or being able to see it or connect to it by setting BSSID to 'test'. I'm quite frustrated now, I find 'howto' after 'howto' from people with same chipsets and it always seemed to work out great for them - but not here... iw list even shows up the AP mode being present at the interface... • Problem with running a flash Program from flashdrive

  Hi, I have a USB drive with two partitions in it. one hidden and the other normal. i have an application which swaps the memory and runs the flash application in hidden zone. The problem is that the application works fine on windows7 and when run on WINXp, it swaps the partitions but doesn't run the flash applications but just keeps running in the background. I can see it in task manager. But, when i copy the application to desktop and run , it runs with no glitch I was facing the same problem on WIN7 too , but it was running as required when i ran it using "Run in Xp mode" and then i applied a SHIM and is running since then as required. the application is built using VC++ 2008 , What might be the problem.

• Raid recovery in gigabyte GA-8I945 Pro

  This was a working machine until a few days ago. And now it won't boot into the OS, during startup if makes clicking sounds (I think from one of the drives). Installed OS: Windows 2003 Web edition Hardware: Gigabyte GA-8I945P Pro , 2*160G Sata in RAID1 configuration , 2 Volumes – 25G and the rest. When I installed windows on it, during setup, I pressed F6 and used ICH7DH drivers of RAID. The manual for the MOBO says: Step 1: After the POST memory test begins and before the operating system boot begins, look for a message which says "Press to enter Configuration utility" (Figure 4). Press CTRL+ I to enter the RAID BIOS setup utility. But the machine never shows this message. BIOS SATA RAID/AHCI Mode is set to RAID. Any ideas or pointers on what I can do to recover my data?   I currently have a desktop with 6 GPUs ( 3x HD 5970s ) in non-crossfire mode. Unfortunately, it seems that Windows 7 64bit only supports up to 4 GPUs. I have not been able to find a reliable source to deny or confirm this. If windows 7 has this limitation, is there a Linux flavor that supports more than 4 GPUs? In-case you are wondering, this is not for gaming but high-speed single precision computing. With this current setup ( if I can find 6gpu support ) I am looking to reach 13.8 Teraflops. Also, my motherboard does support 3 16x pci-xpress gen2 slots... and I have a 1500w powersupply plugged into a 20amp outlet. Windows is able to detect all 6 cores.. although, 2 of which displays the warning "Drivers failed to load". To recap: - Can windows support 6 GPUs? - If not, does Linux? Thank you.

• Best technique for reusing a Windows system image across configurations

  We are a small company that provides solutions for ventilation systems. Part of the solution is a "controller" which communicates with the ventilation equipment. These controllers are simply Dell computers that come with our Windows 7 system image on them and sometimes some special hardware. We typically do a batch of 10 controllers at a time. We have been using Norton Ghost to apply the system image, but this process breaks because Dell changes the system configuration often, and our Windows image now does not contain the correct drivers. This is especially a problem when they change the RAID controller. To improve this, I see 2 options: use some kind of virtualization and install a hypervisor on each PC. This would solve the driver problem, but probably cause trouble with our special hardware. use some method of adding the proper drivers to our Windows image in offline mode. I haven't got much experience in either of these approaches. How would you solve our problem?

  I have Ubuntu 10.04 running gnome and two monitors. I am wondering if a can get a better multi-monitor configuration tool. The one I have, gnome-display-properties, has too many problems, including: when I swapped my monitors over, the narrower one now on the left. There is a width calculation error, such that I have a virtual monitor the width of the wide-monitor on the narrow-monitor and part of the wide monitor. And a virtual narrow-monitor on the remainder of the wide-monitor. I would like: nobugs. to be able to select which is primary monitor. to have multiple configurations. configurations to be automatically selected based on which monitors are attached. configurations to be cycled (reliably) when display mode key is pressed. when a display is deactivated, for windows to migrate to remaining monitors. option to not change display resolution when mirroring, but to use side/top blanking bars to pad out screen.

  I'm backing up a linux server to a windows share. I'm currently mounting the windows share with cifs and using rsync for incremental backups. File permissions and ownership are not being preserved, as should be expected after reading this samba document: The core CIFS protocol does not provide unix ownership information or mode for files and directories. Because of this, files and directories will generally appear to be owned by whatever values the uid= or gid= options are set, and will have permissions set to the default file_mode and dir_mode for the mount. How can I achieve my goal of preserving unix file permissions while writing to a windows share? Is there another network file system that would allow me to do this? Thanks.

• Cannot write, format, nor erase flash drive

  I have a 4gig flash drive, which I can read from but not write on, erase, nor format in any computer (tried in 7 different computers including xp, vista, and win7). I want to erase all the data inside because it is useless. Once I erase something, it erases it and gives me an error that it can't find the file. Once I refresh the folder, the file comes back. I tried holding Shift + Del. I also tried to use the command to format it in safe mode, but it says "access denied". I don't have a write protection button or whatever it is on my flash drive. It's just a simple small 4 gig one.

• Serve my website from different server during downtime

  I have a VPS server running in the cloud. Fully automated server image upgrade/downgrade(by RAM/HDD plans). The problem is that server upgrade/downgrade takes time and involves total unavailability during this period(up to 30 minutes). Goal: during this downtime server my website(http://mydomain.here) from different server with some message like "Under construction". How can I do this? -- mydomain.here is hosted on godaddy and uses its DNS(If I call it right). It's pointing with A-record to my VPS's IP address now. Change in these DNS settings will take more than 30minutes, so it's not an option. How can I find mode "dynamic" DNS? What should I learn?

• Apache Tomcat 6.0.29 startup causing Win XP SP3 reboot

  Some of our Windows XP Developer machines die (black screen - no ping) when starting up Tomcat from a console. This only happens if the Tomcat debug console window is displayed (not minimised). When minimised, the startup / run is successful. I've checked for Tomcat logs and the crash sessions produce empty (zero bytes) tomcat log files. No system logs exist and no crash dump is created even though this is enabled in the Windows settings. The machine is dual screen and another machine with the same image has the same issue. The only clue is just before the crash, one of the monitors the system reports "Cannot display video mode 1280x1024" (approximate error, didn't write it down). Is there a way I can get Windows to produce log files of this crash session? Beyond running Tomcat as a service / minimised window, how can I fix (or even investigate)?
