• How to adopt scrum agile methodology for a small .Net team

  I am working on a small product based company developing .Net applications. There is a small team with 5-6 developers. I am a person responsible for planning everything. But my primary role is Software developer. Now our current project is very unstable because of poor organization. Today my boss called me and told to submit a report about required resources, appropriate methodology, required man power and their salary scales to make the current project success. I know I don’t have enough organization skills and I need to go deep in my programming skills. So I need to focus only in the development. So I can’t manage the project anymore. Now I am searching some other ways to make ongoing development success. My questions are What is the suitable agile methodology to my team? Is Scrum is suitable for above mentioned scenario? If we adopt Scrum, what we have to do next? (I think hiring new one to manage the project is more suitable. So we have to get Scrum master and some other developers.) Are there any resources (books, Blogs and etc) to get some tips and advices to solve this problem? If Scrum is not a suitable methodology for our scenario, what else can be more suitable methodology to adopt? Can anyone give a good solution for my problem?

  J-ISIS, which is the newly developed Java version of the UNESCO generalized information storage and retrieval system for bibliographic information, continues to be under heavy development and code refactoring in its open source repository. Read more about J-ISIS and its NetBeans Platform basis here. But the Java integration has always produced from time to time some strange behavior (like losing the focus on the other components after clicking on the Browser window, overlapping of windows, etc.), most probably because of mixing heavyweight and lightweight components and also because of our incompetency in solving the issues. Thus, recently we changed for the JavaFX 2.2 WebWiew. The integration with Java is fine and we have got rid of all the DJ-Native Swing problems. However, we have lost some features which were given for free with the native browsers such as downloading resources in different formats and opening them in the right application. This is a pretty cool step forward, i.e., the JavaFX integration. It also confirms for me something I've heard other people saying too: the JavaFX WebView component is a perfect low threshold entry point for Swing developers feeling their way into the world of JavaFX.

• Oracle Virtual Desktop Client with USB smart card reader

  I have my Sun Ray thin client at home which I use religiously, I use a Sun Ray 3i at work as my main desktop and just always take my smart card home and happily continue with the hot desking feature. We released a software version of the Sun Ray client called Oracle Virtual Desktop Client (OVDC). There is a version for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. I have a minimac at home and I installed OVDC on it, which of course works great but since I like to re-connect to my session that I use at work, I wanted to try out the external usb smart card reader feature. I ordered a cute, low cost device online and tried it out. As expected, it worked out of the box without -any- configuration. I took the device, plugged it into my minimac, started OVDC, plugged in my smartcard and I got the password screen (screensaver) to get into my sun ray session on my server at work. • Getting the PC speaker to beep

  There has been much written on getting the beep sound from Ubuntu releases over the years. Example: fixing the beep My needs are slightly different in that I do not want to ensure sound card beeps are functioning. Instead, I want PC speaker beeps, the kind produced by the original built-in speaker because I believe they will produce less CPU load. I have confirmed that my computer has the PC speaker by unplugging the external speakers and shutting down Ubuntu. At some point in the shutdown and restart process a beep is heard even though the external speakers have no power. I have tried the following: In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, turn these lines into comments: #blacklist snd_pcsp #blacklist pcspkr In .bashrc /usr/bin/xset b on /usr/bin/xset b 100 Enable in the gnome terminal: Edit Profile Prefs General Terminal Bell Ensure no "mute" selections in: System Prefs Sound various tabs (uncheck them all). Select "Enable window and button sounds" in: System Prefs Sound Sound Effects In gconf-editor desktop gnome sound, select the three sound check boxes. In gconf-editor apps metacity general select the audible bell check box. Still I get no PC speaker beeps when I send code 7 to the console via my Java program or use echo -e '\a' on the bash command line. What else should I try? Update Since my goal is to minimize load on the CPU, here is a comparison of elapsed times. Each test is for 100,000 iterations. • Can I delete Generic kernel if I use Generic

  I currently can't update my release as there is not enough space on boot. • Is an app that does nothing but link to a web site functional enough to meet Apple's iOS guidelines?

  I don't hang out on Programmers enough to know whether this question is "ok", so my apologies if not. I tried to make the title obvious so at least it can be closed quickly :-) The question is simple. My employer wants "home screen presence" (or at least the possibility thereof) on iOS devices (also Android but I'm mostly interested in Apple at the moment). Our actual application will be a pure web-delivered mobile-friendly application, so what we want on the homescreen is basically something that just acts as a link to bring up Safari (or Chrome now I guess; not important). I'm presuming that that's more-or-less possible; if not then that would be interesting too. I know that the Apple guidelines are such that low-functionality apps are generally rejected out of hand. There are a lot of existing apps that seem (to me) less functional than a link to something useful, but I'm not Apple of course. Because this seems like a not-too-weird situation, I'm hoping that somebody knows it's either definitely OK (maybe because there are many such apps) or definitely not OK. Note that I know about things like PhoneGap and I don't want that, at least not at the moment.

• Very large log files, what should I do?

  (This question deals with a similar issue, but it talks about a rotated log file.) Today I got a system message regarding very low /var space. As usual I executed the commands in the line of sudo apt-get clean which improved the scenario only slightly. Then I deleted the rotated log files which again provided very little improvement. Upon examination I find that some log files in the /var/log has grown up to be very huge ones. To be specific, ls -lSh /var/log gives, total 28G -rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 14G Aug 23 21:56 kern.log -rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 14G Aug 23 21:56 syslog -rw-rw-r-- 1 root utmp 390K Aug 23 21:47 wtmp -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 287K Aug 23 21:42 dpkg.log -rw-rw-r-- 1 root utmp 287K Aug 23 20:43 lastlog As we can see, the first two are the offending ones. I am mildly surprised why such large files have not been rotated. So, what should I do? Simply delete these files and then reboot? Or go for some more prudent steps? I am using Ubuntu 14.04.

• USB Ports In Wrong Mode, How To Use usbmodeswitch?

  I haven't had access to my USB ports as media devices for a couple days now. I've been reading and researching everything I can find but I can't find a good guide for usbmodeswtich or usbms that I can decipher. The USB's are fine for power, but won't support my android phone as a media device, which is killing me because I use adb everyday, and won't support my plug and play mouse any longer. Not sure what caused the switch, though I think it may be related to the suspend issue I've read about, but the solutions in those threads I read also didn't work. Below is my system information and details. • Cannot use second display with 12.04 and Intel 2000/3000

  I am unable to get anything to display on my second monitor, or even get the system to recognize that there is a second screen. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2PV, revision 2.0 box. The integrated chipset is an Intel 2000/3000, and there are both a D-Dub and a DVI-D display ports on the MB. This is the first operating system I have installed on this system. I have a second monitor plugged into the DVI-D port via a DVI-D to D-Sub adapter. I cannot verify that the motherboard or adapter were/are working, short of installing windows to test the theory. When I go into the "System Settings - Displays" control window, it shows one display. I have rebooted with the second monitor attached, and I have perused the BIOS settings in case it might have been disabled. So far, I have had no indication that the second monitor is recognized, not even a flicker at power on. If I swap monitors and cables between the DVI-D and D-Dub ports, the other monitor lights up, so I know the monitor and video cable are not the issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated. • Worthless Anti-Spam (What can we learn)

  I recently can across a site that had a “anti-spam” field at the bottom of the entry from.  The first issue I had with it was that at 1280X800 you could not read the value you were suppose to enter (see below).  You tell me, should you enter div, dlv, piv, or plv. But even worse than not being readable at high resolutions is the fact that the programmer who coded it really did not understand what this was used for.  An anti-spam (aka: catpcha) entry field should not be able to be read by looking at the HTML DOM object (so entry of value cannot be scripted).  In this case the value is simply a disabled text input filed that has the value you need to type.  So a hacker would simply need to search for text input field named “spam2” and then they could flood the site with spam. 1: <td> 2: <label> 3: <input name="spam1" type="text" class="small" id="spam1" size="6" maxlength="3" /> 4: <input name="spam2" type="text" class="small" id="spam2" value="plv" 5: disabled="disabled" size="6" maxlength="3" /> 6: * <span class="small">- Anti-SPAM key - please enter matching value</span> 7: </label> 8: </td>   There are some things to learn from this example: 1) Always make sure you understand why you are coding a feature/function for any program you write.  Just following the requirements without realizing the “why” will sooner or later come back to bite you.  I think the above example appears to be an example of this. 2) Always check how the screen appears in different resolutions.  In this case it was pretty much unreadable in 1280x800, but you could read it in 800X600 (but most people I know do not have their resolution set that low).  Lucky for me I could “View Source” and get the value I needed to enter.

  My family is looking for a programming/computer science tutor. Personally, I want to learn Java or some other brand of web programming. I am best described as a PC "power user." I have never programmed in the past and would like a good jump start. I am a very quick learner and do not expect the tutor to have to teach me the ultra basic stuff that I can learn myself. My son also needs a programming tutor. He just got into Carnegie Mellon as a computer science major. Having done only robotics and mathematics in the past he is very nervous that he does not have the same level of knowledge as his future classmates. I need some help coming up with a list of questions to ask potential tutors and some criteria to judge them by. Thanks! Edit: So far I have come up with just the obvious... Where did you receive your education? What languages are you familiar with? How long have you been tutoring? What made you decide to become a tutor? What software projects have you worked on? What work references can you give me? How much do you charge?

• Compressing/compacting messages over websocket on Node.js

  We have a websocket implementation (Node.js/Sock.js) that exchanges data as JSON strings. As our use cases grow, so have the size of the data transmitted across the wire. The websocket protocol does not natively offer any compression feature, so in order to reduce the size of our messages we'd have to manually do something about the serialisation. There appear to be a variety of LZW implementations in Javascript, some which confuses me on their compatibility for in-browser use only versus transmission across the wire due to my lack of understanding on low-level encodings. More importantly, all of them seem to take a noticeable performance drag when Javascript is the engine doing the compression/decompression work, which is not desirable for mobile devices. Looking instead other forms of compact serialisation, MessagePack does not appear to have any active support in Javascript itself; BSON does not have any Javascript implementation; and an alternative BISON project that I tested does not deserialise everything back to their original values (large numbers), and it does not look like any further development will happen either. What are some other options others have explored for Node.js?

• Operating System not Found after installing Ubuntu in a Sony Vaio

  I just bought a Sony Vaio SVS15115FLB that came with Windows 7, after enjoying the PC graphic power for a little, I decided it was time to install Ubuntu 12.04. First, I inserted a USB stick, reboot, press F11 but a message saying that no OS was found on the USB, so then I used a live CD. It booted fine and I installed Ubuntu, then when it was time to restart the PC, it didn't boot to GRUB but it went straight to Windows and it began an startup error and was looking for a solution, after it was done, it restarted and then it booted again to Windows and to the same start up error solution thing. I freaked out, so I booted again the Ubuntu live CD, and installed Ubuntu over everything, after it installed I rebooted and then a message appeared saying Operating system Not Found, and I have no idea why. So I Googled again and found this post on Boot Partition, I did everything exactly on that post, but it didn't work (by the way, this was the message): The boot files of [Ubuntu 12.04 LTS] are far from the start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them. You may want to retry after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, >200MB, start of the disk). This can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair]. It appeared the first time, then I did it all again and then it was gone. I rebooted and nothing, the same Operating System not found message appeared. So I decided to create a partition for Windows, hoping for something, but the message still appears. I really have no idea what to do, but there is something odd, if I insert the USB stick containing Ubuntu 11.10, the message that says that there is no OS in the PendDrive flashes for a fraction of a second and the boot straight to Ubuntu 12.04 without problems (and booted to Windows when I installed it, ignoring Ubuntu), right now I'm using it like that, but its pretty annoying. Can anyone advise me how to fix this? I'm no expert on this kind of things (boot, GRUB, recovery and stuff like that).

• Logitech C510 HD Webcam related question

  I am going to buy Logitech C510 HD webcam and I just checked on other questions here on AskUbuntu that it works out of the box with cheese. My question is can it be limited in any functionality that I would like to do with it? I would like it to be used with everything - Skype, Gtalk video chat, Facebook, Youtube etc I would like the ability to record or do a video call in lesser resolution video (its a 720p one). Also since I read that I should have a Core2Duo 2.2Ghz for 720p but I have a 2.0Ghz one, would it be possible for me to first record it and then encode it after recording if my processor really start giving issue when doing on-the-fly encoding? Anything else that I should consider? I also have a ATI HD 4850 512MB card, if it can help in encoding on-the-fly or is there a chance that my graphics card alone can handle it and those specs were just for a system without a graphics card? I believe so. Also, I got no worries in dealing with console, if I have to do some of the things above in terminal. Other possible significant details: I have a dual screen setup 29" (1360X768) & 22" (1680X1050) which might be using some good power from GPU and I have 2GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM.

• JavaScript 3D space ship rotation

  I am working with a fairly low-level JavaScript 3D API (not Three.js) which uses euler angles for rotation. In most cases, euler angles work quite well for doing things like aligning buildings, operating a hovercraft, or looking around in the first-person. However, in space there is no up or down. I want to control the ship's roll, pitch, and yaw. To do that, some people would use a local coordinate system or a permenant matrix or quaternion or whatever to represent the ship's angle. However, since I am not most people and am using a library that deals exclusively in euler angles, I will be using relative angles to represent how to rotate the ship in space and getting the resulting non-relative euler angles. For you math nerds, that means I need to convert 3 euler angles (with Y being the vertical axis, X representing the pitch, and Z representing a roll which is unaffected by the other angles, left-handed system) into a 3x3 orientation matrix, do something fancy with the matrix, and convert it back into the 3 euler angles. Euler to matrix to euler. Somebody has posted something similar to this on SO (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1217775/rotating-a-spaceship-model-for-a-space-simulator-game) but he ended up just working with a matrix. This will not do for me. Also, I am using JavaScript, not C++. What I want essentially are the functions do_roll, do_pitch, and do_yaw which only take in and put out euler angles. Many thanks.

• Wrong resolution for Lightdm/GDM on Ubuntu 13.04 using HDMI

  I've tried all the solution I could find on the matter so far, but the error persists. My problem is that the login screen (both under gdm and lightdm) runs with the wrong resolution, even though all is fine when I log in. The error occurs solely when I have my HDMI cable connected to my other screen. The login screen resolution becomes 1024x768 (for my 1366x768 laptop screen) and mirrored on my screen, which is 1920x1080. I've had this issue on version 12.04 (the last one before I upgraded to 13.04), but I got it fixed by adding the xrandr commands on the begining of the /etc/gdm/Init/Default file. This doesn't seem to work anymore. I've also tried telling lightdm to run a script fixing the resolution with xrandr (by editing /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf), but lightdm crashes, and I'm forced to log in with low graphic settigs. Hint: when ubuntu is loading, the resolution starts OK, then goes bad right before the login screen is initialized. Does that mean that there's nothing wrong with my graphic cards? What do you think?   I am trying to understand the concept of Application binary interface (ABI). From The Linux Kernel Primer: An ABI is a set of conventions that allows a linker to combine separately compiled modules into one unit without recompilation, such as calling conventions, machine interface, and operating-system interface. Among other things, an ABI defines the binary interface between these units. ... The benefits of conforming to an ABI are that it allows linking object files compiled by different compilers. From Wikipedia: an application binary interface (ABI) describes the low-level interface between an application (or any type of) program and the operating system or another application. ABIs cover details such as data type, size, and alignment; the calling convention, which controls how functions' arguments are passed and return values retrieved; the system call numbers and how an application should make system calls to the operating system; and in the case of a complete operating system ABI, the binary format of object files, program libraries and so on. I was wondering whether ABI depends on both the instruction set and the OS. Are the two all that ABI depends on? What kinds of role does ABI play in different stages of compilation: preprocessing, conversion of code from C to Assembly, conversion of code from Assembly to Machine code, and linking? From the first quote above, it seems to me that ABI is needed for only linking stage, not the other stages. Is it correct? When is ABI needed to be considered? Is ABI needed to be considered during programming in C, Assembly or other languages? If yes, how are ABI and API different? Or is it only for linker or compiler? Is ABI specified for/in machine code, Assembly language, and/or of C?

• Is the Alternate Ubuntu installer still required for LVM or Software RAID setup?

  Over the past 5 years, I have been setting up Ubuntu servers using the Alternate installer. I need to provision a new server today, and I'm curious if the Alternate CD is still the only way to setup LVM/RAID at installation time. I'm my limited experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, I noticed it's single installer configures LVM automatically. Has Ubuntu's installer, at least the standard "Server" installer, added support for LVM/RAID, or is the Alternate installer still required for that kind of server setup? http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/DVDs/ubuntu/12.04.1/release/ Alternate install CD The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. It provides for the following situations: setting up automated deployments; upgrading from older installations without network access; LVM and/or RAID partitioning; installs on systems with less than about 384MiB of RAM (although note that low-memory systems may not be able to run a full desktop environment reasonably). LVM has always been fundamental for our server needs, so I'm surprised if it is still not considered a server-worthy feature.

• Usual Suspects: Typical 3rd Party Entities in E-Commerce [closed]

  I am doing some requirements/analysis for a web app that I'd like to build (Ruby/Java developer here). This web app would have a store front, shopping cart and would need to be totally compliant with all e-com best practices. It's amazing how much non-technical info comes up when you search for phrases like "how does e-commerce work", but very little comes up in the way of technical details. As such, I'm having extreme frustration finding answers to what I consider pretty straight-forward questions. I came here because I believe this question is not off-topic; if it is, please leave a comment as to why this question does not belong here and I will happily remove it myself (upvotes if your comment can point me to the correct place for this question!). So then: What 3rd parties will I need to work with to have a modern, web-compliant e-com site? So far I can account for a payment gateway provider like Authorize.net and an SSL certificate provider like Trustwave. Any others? What other standards besides PCI compliance will I be held to (besides governing laws, of course!)? Vulnerability scans: PCI compliance requires quarterly scans: if I'm a "Level 4" (low volume) Merchant does that still apply to me? Irregardless, my backend architecture is quite huge, with web servers, app servers, database, message brokers and more. Do each of these servers need to be scanned?!? If not what servers do need to get these quarterly scans? I usually hate to ask micro-questions inside of one large one, but these are so closely-related I just felt like asking them all separately would be spamming the site with too many petty questions. • How do I debug an overheating problem?

  Hello guys. I have a problem with my Laptop (Dell Inspiron 1564 Core i5 4GB Ram VGA ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300 running Ubuntu 10.10 32bit). It shuts down abruptly without even a lag in the application I am working with before shutdown. I think it's overheating problem. Actually the laptop is hot all the time when I am running Ubuntu. When I switch back to windows, even with intense load it won't shutdown or show any problem as long as I keep proper ventilation (when the air openings are blocked it does the same). Actually on Ubuntu i don't usually do things that need much CPU power, usually surfing internet, coding web pages and sometimes playing with python and ruby. I am not enabling desktop effects so no GPU load except the normal GNOME gui. Now as I am writing the Processor load in the panel monitor applet is 0%, Memory 11% by programs, 22% by cache. And i have CPU Frequency monitor for each of the 4 cores set to 1.20 Ghz (the lowest possible value, i am not sure if this applet does really limit CPU usage). Running sensors in terminal gave me temp1: +26.8°C (crit = +100.0°C) temp2: +0.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) hddtemp /dev/sda at the terminal gave me /dev/sda: WDC WD3200BEVT-75ZCT2: 46°C All that fine but the laptop is Really hot i can feel it in the keyboard, mouse pad is painful to touch, and the fan is always spinning. I am also placing 2 small fans running on USB under the laptop right now and the laptop is lifted over the fans so it's well ventilated. When I am running windows it doesn't get that hot except when there is a really big load on the CPU and this is keeping me away from using Linux for everyday tasks. Actually I don't care much for speed as I can deal with low speed it's not going to shutdown abruptly. So please if you can help me and tell me what are the possible causes, where should I start ?
