• What are the current options to encrypted a partition on mac os x ?

  I recently got my laptop stolen with some sensitive informations on it (personal source code, bank details in a secure file, passwords, etc) and I learnt the lesson: encrypt your sensitive data. Now, I am wondering what are the options to encrypt a partition (not an encrypt disk image) ? Aim: The aim is to prevent anyone (except me) to access those data. Requirement 0: The software must be able to encrypt non system partition. Requirement 1: Plausible deniability is required but preventing cold boot attack is however not an absolute requirement (I am not famous enough or have sensitive enough info to have this kind of requirement). Requirement 2 : Software taking advantage of AES hardware encryption are very welcome as I intent to get a Macbook Pro with i7 CPU (with AES-NI enabled instructions). I will have avirtual machine running in the encrypted partition. Requirement 3 : Free or reasonably cheap. Requirement 4 : Software must run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Lion. • Full computer freeze with audio stuttering after playing games for a period of time

  I've been having a problem with my computer freezing completely when playing games like LA Noire or SW:TOR (yay early access!). Basically, what happens is I will play for around an hour or so (depending on the game) and when the freeze happens, the entire computer locks up and any audio that was being played glitches out and stutters broken-record style (only much shorter. Very techno). I think it might be heat related and thought it might be my video card overheating, so I have been setting my video card (Nvidia Geforce 260GTX 216-core) fan to highest setting, but that has little to no effect. Now I'm beginning to think it's either my FSB or CPU overheating. Can anyone provide some insight or similar experiences? I'm really at a loss and don't wanna damage my rig beyond repair.

• Uncorrectable machine check

  I am experiencing rare but real unrecoverable machine checks on HP DL370 G6 dual-core Xeon server. I ran memtest86+ before, and ran CPU-intensive operations without any problems. In your opinion, does this indicate a real problem, or is it normal and expected behavior? How would you approach this problem? EDIT after some troubleshooting, it seems that these machine checks, as well as problems when showing device manager can be traced back to NC375i NICs. All is well when the NICs are not in the server. Further improvements to stability of HP Gen6 with Intel Xeon have been brought in with BIOS update in September 2013 HP Update DVD. Intel's newer microcode makes these CPUs much more stable. We haven't seen hardware-related BSODs since the update in September.

• Apache stops serving requests when connections increase

  The values for MaxClients, ServerLimit etc parameters are quite high (4000). Available RAM on the server is high too (~8G). Load average remains below 1 on a 24 core CPU. But when the number of visitors on the website increase apache just stops serving requests. The apache error log is blank and access log shows no more requests coming in. Restarting apache makes it work again until the number of requests increases again. Any ideas where to start looking? UPDATE Getting the below errors in apache error log on running it with LogLevel Debug [info] server seems busy, (you may need to increase StartServers, or Min/MaxSpareServers), spawning 32 children, there are 479 idle, and 1027 total children

• How to identify who is using Hardware Reserved Memory in Windows 7

  I run Windows 7 x86 Home Premium. I have an installed physical memory of 4 GB, out of which, 2.96 GB is usable (My Computer Properties). I checked the memory usage using Resource Monitor and found 3036 MB / 4096 MB is available. I noticed that 1060 MB is unavailable since it is reserved by some "Hardware component(s)". I would like to know which hardware component is using this 1060 MB. Is there any way or tool to identify this? Note: I know that Windows 7 Home Premium x86 supports a maximum of 4GB RAM.

  I am developing a web application on localhost with domains and sub-domains and I would like to use a HTTPS connection. On my Mac OS, in order to enable SSL, I need to set Apache correctly, so I followed some guide to accomplish part of that. Now it is time to choose a certificate in order to test HTTPS requests. I seen the cacert.pem, but I don't know how to use that and for what it is used (can you explain to me some about its usage?)... So, is it possible to use the cacert.pem (see the link) for all my domains and subdomains (maybe, as a wildcard certificate) on localhost? If so, how to do that? What certificate I have to take and use? If no, what I need to do in order to use a wildcard certificate for all my domains and subdomains on localhost? Of course those certificates must be accepted by browsers and working for HTTPS connection between my domains.

  I'm looking for a simple method that will log file system operations. It should display the name of the file being accessed or modified. I'm familiar with powertop, and it appears this works to an extent, in so much that it show the user files that were written to. Is there any other utilities that support this feature. Some of my findings: powertop: best for write access logging, but more focused on CPU activity iotop: shows real time disk access by process, but not file name lsof: shows the open files per process, but not real time file access iostat: shows the real time I/O performance of disk/arrays but does not indicate file or process

  Is another question extended from the previous one [1] I have a compressed file and stream them to feed into a python program, e.g. bzcat data.bz2 | parallel --no-notice -j16 --pipe python parse.py > result.txt The parse.py can read from stdin continusuoly and print to stdout My ec2 instance is 16 cores but from the top command it is showing 3 to 4 load average only. From the ps, I am seeing a lot of stuffs like.. sh -c 'dd bs=1 count=1 of=/tmp/7D_YxccfY7.chr 2>/dev/null'; I know I can improve using the -a in.txtto improve performance, but with my case I am streaming from bz2 (I cannot exact it since I don't have enought disk space) How to improve the efficiency for my case?   My Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server periodically has a high load avg spike(once every 2 days) resulting in Apache timing out and virtualy everything even SSH to the server is not possible. When I am on the console and run TOP is see that The load avg increases from less than 1 to above 60 in 15 mins. • Windows 7 extremely long startup

  Windows 7 before it even gets to login. On the "starting windows" splash screen takes no less than 15 minutes to finish more like 25 minutes most times. During this time the hard drive activity led indicator is blinking maybe once every 20 seconds. When I finally get to the desktop everything runs normally. I have unplugged all peripherals with same result. Ideas? It's 32bit. 4gig memory. Fast CPU which I can't recall off the top of my head.

• Excel 2010 -Excel cannot complete this task with available resources

  Getting this error when trying to sort a document (Excel cannot complete this task with available resources). Document isn't particularly large, about 4,000 lines. Can't seem to figure out why this would start on this. I can sort this same file fine on everything back to Excel 2000 on older crappy computers. Computer is running Win 7 x64, 16 Gb RAM, and another 16 Gb of virtual. There's no possible way that all of the memory is actually getting exhausted when I can perform this on an older XP machine with 512 Mb of RAM, unless 2010's memory usage is inconceivably poorly designed. I found a few posts on forums stating that there might be a security update related bug. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Windows freezes, showing a random color or pattern

  I have a PC with windows 7, and I'm experiencing random freezes with increasing frequency. After some time (from 30 minutes to a few hours) the screen will shows a random color or pattern (vertical lines) and nothing works anymore, I need to reboot manually. I've checked the events log, but nothing is shown except for the unexpected reboot. I've tested the RAM with Memtest86+ 4.20, and the graphics card with FurMark 1.10.3, no errors have been found. I've updated the graphic drivers and openned the case to remove dust, but the issue is still there. Also, the problem doesn't seem to arise when I'm playing games fullscreen, but when I'm surfing the web, using itunes, or coding. My hardware is as follows : intel core i5 750 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics card, ASUSTeK P7P55D motherboard, two 2Gb KINGSTON DDR3 ram sticks, 2 SATA hard drives, a Netgear dongle for wifi.

  Maybe is a very basic question, but I can't find the exact terms to Google for it and find the concrete answer to my doubt. Suppose we have several PCs in which individual employees work. One of them has an extremely powerful CPU, and it's very useful to use that computer to perform heavy computations, but go there and set up your task means its user has to stop working for a while. Is it possible to allow a secondary user account to remotly log in, for example via Remote Desktop, and work with a full user environment, while the main user keeps working under his user session? I've used remote desktop many times in the past, but it always blocked current user session, or even terminated it. Lots of thanks in advance guys.

  I want to understand if it is possible to install Windows from Qemu to a physical HDD. I was trying to do that by doing something like this: qemu-system-x64 -m1024 -vnc :1 -hda /dev/sda -cdrom .../Windows.iso Installed successfully. But when i tried to boot normally got a blue screen telling me that a hardware change appeared so go away. I guess the problem is not because of QEMU-CPU emulation or smth, but because of HDD`s UID change which is used inside of Windows registry. Am i right? So if yes how to workaround this? Maybe i need to prepare Windows before the reboot? I have successfully installed FreeBSD via QEMU and thought with Windows it will go the same ...

To meet the needs, suppose a normal page of this application that has a query which it takes 10 miliseconds to response on a Core2 Quad @ 2.8GHz proccessor with 2x2GB of DDR3 Ram (EntityFramework overheads are considered). And we will have about 2000 concurrent user at peek times. So, what is the best recommended specifications (CPU/RAM/RAID/...) for the server which will be host this application? -- Or -- How can I calculate that?

• init.d service died

  Adapting some code from a linux forum, I've added a service script to /etc/init.d on my ubuntu natty server to start/stop/restart node.js It literally was working the first day I made it, but then today, after viewing my website this morning, the server threw a 404, and upon further inspection, the node.js process was gone. So I went to start the service again, only this time, node.js didn't start at all, and ever since I haven't been able to get my service script working.   I would like to set a network connection as metered. I can't find how to do this; it seems to have changed in the upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1. I tried following the steps in the official metered connection FAQ. However, when I open the connection, there is no Data Usage heading nor a Set as a metered connection option. I tried this on two different computers, both running Windows 8.1. I also tried doing this for both wireless and ethernet adaptors. Here's what the connection screen looks like. • VPS stops responding every now and again

  I have a Linode vps that I use to host some of my websites on. It's Ubuntu based and it's up to date in terms of all packages. I don't have any cron jobs scheduled or any automatic processes. I host a few (up to date) wordpress blogs there that have very little traffic altogether. Every day (at a different time) my server stops responding, I can't SSH to it, web access is getting timed out and it just dies until I reboot it through the Linode manager. On the linode dashboard I can see that the CPU is not very high (2-3%) Incoming/Outgoing traffic is on 0 and the IO count has a spike just before the server stops responding (SWAP IO is at 2k and IO Rate is at 5k). When I reboot the server everything is just fine. I'm trying to figure out a way to analyze what's going on at these random times where the server freezes up. How can I determine the problem?

• Windows 7 stopped booting

  I have a laptop which after shutdown it stopped booting. I tried repair, safe mode, and even start with Windows 7 Installation. The screen just goes blank with a mouse pointer that I can move around. I removed the harddrive from the laptop and connected it to my desktop using an External HD casing. The computer recognizes the disk, but it seems like it can't read it. If I go to My Computer it shows up, but it doesn't display usage information. When I double click on the drive it sits there as if it was loading something and eventually shows "G:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect." Disk Management and Diskpart also take forever to load and when it does it shows the drive. My question, do you think this is a hardware problem or some corrupted sector? How can I try to fix the drive without formatting it? Thanks...

• Improving sound quality with remote ESD server

  Hi, I'm investigating low-budget ways to get audio from my PC (Ubuntu) to HiFi without wires. I'm currently testing a setup where Asus WL-500gP wireless router runs ESD daemon and has attached USB soundcard which is then plugged into HiFi. I'm testing playback on PC with mpg123-esd and Spotify under Wine. The sound is there, latency is unexpectedly low, but I also hear occassional clicks and some distortion from time to time. I suppose that's because of the low latency and wireless streaming of uncompressed audio--any packet drops, CPU temporarily being busy etc. will cause clicks in sound output. Is there a way around this problem, increasing latency / buffer size somehow perhaps? Streaming using shoutcast protocol seems to be a way out but I have feeling that would be a complex and brittle setup.
