• Overlapping Samba Shares

  Is it OK to have samba shares that overlap, like the following: [whole-drive] path = /mnt/myusbdrive ... [music] path = /mnt/myusbdrive/music ... [movies] path = /mnt/myusbdrive/movies ... I have a mounted external HDD with music and movies, plus a whole bunch of other stuff like backups. I want to expose the music and movies directories as separate samba shares (probably with guest access), so that they're uncluttered with all the other stuff; and I want to expose the entire drive as a separate samba share (with higher permissions) for doing more administrative things across the drive. Does Samba behave well with this configuration? I'm wondering if I'd end up with problems like phantom writes if the same file is accessed at the same time across two different shares. Details: OS: Debian GNU/Linux wheezy/sid on Raspberry Pi HDD: NTFS, mounted as ntfs-3g. Samba: version 3.6.6

• Cron Permission Denied

  good day, I have a bash script in my home directory that works properly from the command line (file structure is default media temple DV. < noted for certain permission issues) but receive this error from cron: "/home/myFile.sh: line 2: /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/subdomains/techspatch/installation.sql: Permission denied" NOTICE: it's just line 2... it writes to the local server just fine. Below is the Bash File: #!/bin/bash mysqldump -uUSER -pPASSWORD -hHOST dbName> /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/subdomains/techspatch/installation.sql mysql -uadmin -pPASSWORD -hlocalhost dbName< /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/subdomains/techspatch/installation.sql can't chmod from bash (lol, yeah i tried). writing the file there and setting the permissions before the transfer is useless... i have googled the heck out of this situation and this one still seems unique.... any insight is appreciated

• Single-port 2600 router with 2900XL switch

  I have a setup, where the single port 2600 router is in port 0/2 in the switch, outside network is on port 0/1, and the rest (0/3-0/24) should be clients for the second network that would be managed by the 2600 router. I configured everything with two VLANs: 100 for outside (0/2-0/24), 200 for inside (0/1-0/2). 0/2 is a trunk port for the two VLANs. The issue that came about is that I can't have two VLANs on at once: software doesn't allow it. Now, I can ping the outside network devices (172.16.7.1, 172.16.7.103), and even google (8.8.8.8) from the router, but not the switch. Devices on connected get a DHCP lease properly but can't ping outside the network, just the router - 172.17.7.1 and the switch itself, 172.17.7.7. • unix command to verify span of word in text

  What unix command(s) can I use to determine the line span that a word appears in text? The "span" being equal to the line number of the last instance of a word minus the line number of the first instance of the word. 1| unix is on two lines 2| once above, and once below 3| unix In the example above the "span" of 'unix' would be 2 (3-1). So far I've been trying to make use of grep -n but I don't think that grep is powerful enough. Maybe some use of sed or awk? Thanks!

• Keyboard Navigation of File Open Dialog in Windows 7

  In Windows XP standard File - Open dialog, the top has a "Look In" box. I can press Alt+I to drop down a tree of the disks folders and easily navigate to other folders or network shares. In Windows 7, I can't seem to navigate the File - Open dialog as easily. The best I've been able to muster is to tab 5 times (in Excel 2007, but I assume it's a windows standard), then use arrow keys or use Alt+arrow keys like a browser to get around. It's simply not as good because I can't see the whole tree at once. Is there a way to see the whole folder tree? If not, do you have any other tips for keyboard navigation of the file open dialog in Windows 7?

  I was trying to load some modules with EasyApache in a software update (WHM) cause I need to install Magento ecommerce. I did the first EasyApache update. However, one module I needed was not loaded. • MySQL doesn't talk to PHP anymore (EasyPHP)

  I've just upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 (64 bit) I was using EasyPHP 5.3.1 to develop my website, but since I've upgraded I can't get PHP to talk to MySQL. Even the PHPMyAdmin page doesn't load. I've tried installing the latest 64bit version of MySQL in place of the supplied version of MySQL, but that hasn't helped. The queries just don't seem to reach MySQL. I have verified that the DB for my database works by running mysql on the command line. PHPMyAdmin doesn't display an error, just a blank page.   I use an old copy of altaris SVS (link to lifehacker - symentec gutted the old altaris website) for testing applications - it lets me capture the changes one executable makes, or changes to a whole system into a bundle, and remove the whole bundle once i'm done. However symentec bought over altaris and apparently killed off the product, or merged it into some other bigger product. I'd like the same fine grained control SVS had, something that just does this, and preferably free (for personal use) or not too expensive. I'd like this to run on at least windows XP 32 bit, but windows 7 and 64 bit support would be nice too

  I'm trying to install APC for PHP 5.3 in the easiest way possible. I love Homebrew so I started down that route. I was able to install PHP 5.3.6 with this command: brew install https://github.com/adamv/homebrew-alt/raw/master/duplicates/php.rb --with-mysql I think this is supposed to install PHP, Pear, and PECL.   I have 7z 4.65 and am trying to extract a single file to standard output. The 7z command-line help says -so is the command-line parameter to extract to standard output, but when I try this: >>> 7z e -so dist\dlogpkg.jar META-INF/MANIFEST.MF 7-Zip 4.65 Copyright (c) 1999-2009 Igor Pavlov 2009-02-03 Error: I won't write data and program's messages to same terminal how can I fix this? There doesn't seem to be a command line param to suppress the normal 7z stdout messages. (edit: the equivalent operation in "unzip" would be unzip -p dist\dlogpkg.jar META-INF/MANIFEST.MF which works fine. But I'd like to use 7z for various reasons.)

• Why does some of the songs in my iTunes library stop prematurely and go to the next song?

  For the couple of weeks a whole bunch of the songs from my iTunes library stop early and skip to the next song (just as if it was at the end of the song). Although the point where it skips varies for each song (for one song it is 2:32, another is 2:46), it will always skip at the same point for each song. A while back I ran BPMer and, although it crashed half way through, it did not appear to corrupt my music the way it is now. A few days ago I backed up my iTunes library and reformatted my hard drive (for a completely unrelated issue) and reinstalled OS X from scratch. The problem was happening before and after the reinstall. This problem also persists when the music is synced across to my iPod touch running 3.0. Listening to the same troublesome songs in my iPod causes them to end prematurely. However, I can listen to the whole song using Quicklook, so the problem must be with my iTunes library or something.

• In Visio 2010, how can I create a mandatory, non-identifying relationship between two database tables

  I'm working in MS Visio 2010. This is the relevant part of my ERD: The relationship between Event and Adventure is correct: there's a foreign key from Event to Adventure, and that FK is part of Event's primary key. However, what I can't figure out is how to make the relationship line from Adventure to AccomodationType be the same, without making that relationship part of the PK of adventure. When I look at the 'Miscellaneous' properties of that relationship line, I want it to be: Cardinality: Zero or more Relationship type: Non-identifying Child has parent: Not optional (mandatory) But the checkbox for the third property is greyed out, and toggles between True/False as I make the relationship Non-identifying/Identifying. The only way I could figure out was to disconnect the two columns, from the 'Definition' tab, which then un-grey's the 'Optional' checkbox, but then I lose the foreign key property on the accomType column, and while the relationship symbols are correct, the line remains dotted. Any ideas, anyone?

• How to extend selection in gnome-terminal?

  In a terminal I can select a single line, double clicking with the Left Mouse Button. With xterm, I can extend that selection clicking with the Right Mouse Button in the place I want to extend it. Then can I paste the whole selection with the Middle Mouse Button or paste it in other application. In gnome-terminal, it seems I can extend the selection clicking with the Left Mouse Button, but holding at the same time the Shift key. Visually, it seems the selection is done, but when clicking with the Middle Mouse button or pasting in other application, I only get the primary single line selection. How can I get the whole selection under gnome-terminal? Is it possible to use selections in gnome-terminal as xterm does? Cheers, Tomas.

• Process ANSI escape codes before piping

  I'm trying to pipe the output of a script (Mocha) to another script. However there is one problem: Mocha generates quite a few ansi escape characters to update the screen on the fly. These characters are also send through the pipe. Is there a way to process the ansi sequence such that the output is the same as the final output to the screen? I do want to keep color escape sequences, but not the curser movement escapes. Edit: I have a partial solution now (for Mocha only): so far it seems that Mocha with the spec output (the one I use) only generates color ecape characters and the CSI 0G escape sequence. The CSI 0G escape character means that the cursor should move back to the beginning of the line. Mocha uses this to overwrite a line completely. Therefore you could simply create a sed regexp which will delete everything up to that escape sequence on a line: sed 's/^.*\x1b\[0G//g'. I am still looking for the complete solution though.

  Hi, I'm using an app called django-chronograph. It has a code of line which works in my dev environment and does not work in production: p = subprocess.Popen(['python', get_manage_py(), 'run_job', str(self.pk)]) This line crashes in production with: unknown command run_job Whereas when I run directly from command line: manage.py run_job It works fine. Interestingly it worked once when we exchanged 'python' with 'usr/bin/python'. then we restarted the server once more and it was back to old behaviour. Thus it seems as we have a python path issue. I'm not the guy who is running the server, its my app that should run and it would be great to get some help here. Attention: I'm a total noob regarding server-administration.. server environment: NGINX with FCGI-Daemon FCGI in prefork-mode

  I accidentally formatted my Drive D that contained all my Backups and Documents. I separated my files to my Drive D hoping I will not harm my files. Since I use Acronis Recovery to Install a new OS with some pre-installed application to my HDD I didn't realize I also formated/erase my Drive D. Now my drive D is unpartitioned. I am really in really in deep trouble and would need some urgent help, Please recommend a Software that at least can restore my Old Drive that contained my files. I'm assuming most of you think this is a duplicate of some old questions here, But I'm not looking for data recovery, I need to recover the whole partition with the files. I used to use "Recuva" but It only recovers files not the whole folders with the files in it. Please advice. Thank You!

• odd system name showing up in terminal

  Ive been working on some command line stuff with an external developer through team viewer for work, to interact with th CL i use terminal on OSX, when working with the developer i was always watching what they were doing and i also have all the bash history. Usually upon opening terminal i get something like this Last login: Tue Sep 17 21:33:02 on ttys001 You have mail. unknown-5c:00:00:00:00:00:~ sam$ (note ive replaced some characters in the last line with 00) But today when i opened up terminal and i get this Last login: Mon Oct 21 16:49:35 on ttys000 You have mail. richies-ipad:~ sam$ Note it now says richies-ipad - any idea why this is ? I dont know any one called richie let alone let them have access to my machine. Is this something to be worried about - the fact that someone has enough access to change that ? Also what does the ttys001 part on the first line mean ?

• How can I fix puppet refusing to start and asking for "master.pp"?

  I'm using the very latest version of puppet and have been following the Apress "Pro Puppet" guide step by step. I have installed puppet sudo aptitude install ruby libshadow-ruby1.8 sudo aptitude install puppet puppetmaster facter I have edited /etc/puppet/puppet.conf to include certname [master] certname=puppet.mydomain.com I have edited /etc/hosts and added the following line 127.0.0.1 puppet.mydomain.com puppet I have set the hostname of the server echo "puppet.mydomain.com" > /etc/hostname hostname -F /etc/hostname And then I try and run puppet from the command line. puppet master --verbose --no-daemonize And puppet gives me this error: Could not parse for environment production: Could not find file /master.pp I'm running all commands with sudo and the last line of the error message always says that it can't find master.pp and the path before it is to my current working directory. What am I doing wrong? I should also mention that I don't have a DNS record set up for puppet.mydomain.com - I saw some online documentation mentioning this might be a problem - however I was fairly sure that the hosts file would let me get around that.

• How do you add more space to a Fedora (LVM) partition?

  In a nutshell, i have a VM that ran out of space. I increased the size of the VM's harddrive to be 4 times bigger but the OS partition is still only using 1x the space. I need to change the LVM partition to take up the extra 4x space but I don't know how to extend the LVM partition. (NOTE: To make the screenshots given below I had to boot from a live-cd for gnome-partition-manager (aka gparted). Very unfortunately gparted is only able to "detect LVM" and can't do any LVM operations.) Here is what "gparted" shows. Please notice that the "resize" option is not available: The Problem: I can't find good directions<1 on how to grow the LVM partition via GUI or command-line! How do you grow a LVM partition that was created by the default Fedora install? If you are giving command line directions. Please explain what each line of commands does.

• Annex-A vs Annex-B ADSL splitters

  While trying to improve our Adsl connection, I found that we use a splitter that is from an unknown ventor and have no clue whether is for AnnexA (PSTN) or AnnexB (ISDN) line. Is it possible that somebody used the wrong splitter and just because it connected nobody ever cared? We have an ISDN line but the splitter used is blank. I am not really sure if it is AnnexB. Would it be possible to use an AnnexA filter over an ISDN line (even with that much signal loss)? (I am posting here because this is about our connection to the rack, I'm not sure if there is a more proper SExchange site)
