• How to restrict zone transfers to specific authorized servers only

  I recently failed a PCI compliance scan because of the following: This DNS server allows unrestricted zone transfers. Attackers may be able to use this information to gain knowledge on the structure of your networks to aid in device discovery prior to an actual attack. And the suggested solution is as follows: Reconfigure this DNS server to restrict zone transfers to specific authorized servers only. I am running a dedicated Linux Centos server. My understanding is that I have to edit the /etc/named.conf file, which I have done and the the relevant part is as follows: options { acl "trusted" { 127.0.0.1; xxx.xxx.xxx.001; //this is one of the server's ip's xxx.xxx.xxx.002; //this is another server's ip }; allow-recursion { trusted; }; allow-notify { trusted; }; allow-transfer { trusted; }; }; I then restarted the named service /etc/rc.d/init.d/named restart and requested a re-scan, which failed again for the same reason. Am I missing something obvious here?

• Squirrelmail receiving duplicate emails

  A client of mine is experiencing issues with his email, it appears that whenever he receives email from a certain domain it comes as duplicates. Not only are they duplicates but the duplicated items have a (+) sign next to them which usually indicates an attachment. Could this be because of a forwarding issue? • Toshiba Satellite U500 - Totally Damaged LCD

  I accidentally damaged my Toshiba Satellite U500 laptop which resulted in a totally unusable LCD. The LCD panel has some cracks on it, and I can only see black & white spots; the laptop frame became broken/bent to where I can partially see inside the PC; the accident disassembled the CD tray, and bent the keyboard frame (which now has a weird hump). The system is still working though. It responds to my inputs (eg, turning it on/off, typing my password @ Windows Login, etc). What I want to do now is to transfer all of my important data from that laptop to my external drive. But I don't know how since the LCD screen is unreadable. I know I can connect it to an external monitor or a TV (I have a Samsung 1080p TV) but I don't know how. What cable should I purchase to connect the TV? Which ports on the laptop and TV should I connect it to? Do I need press something while/after connecting it? Can I boot my laptop using the TV?

  Hi, I need to copy my numbers from my private Nokia to my office BB. I have not found a way to export my phone numbers from ovi or elsewhere. On Mac iSync stopped working with snow leopard and OVI on windows does not export. I do not mind using a windows suggestion. I lost a description on how to use the ovi backup files in another program. What I have done so far terminal: sudo open -a iSync.app - it launched but iSync said "this device is not supported by iSync" went here http://europe.nokia.com/support/product-support/isync/compatibility-and-download found a plugin (I am sure that was not there a while ago :| ) Checked software version 22.0.110 installed plugin Ran iSync which found and installed my N97 device successfully. synced. It is so frustrating that they just seem not to care losing Nokia fanbois like me - especially since I am this outspoken on the net and what i say on popular forums gets indexed by google fast. I am very close to just go iPhone here. Hope someone has Nokia's ears UPDATE: I Downloaded NbuExplorer from sourceforge. It will extract everything from an OVI backup into VCF, VCS and VMG files. Very useful software and free.

• Security and data backup for Ubuntu usb installation

  Due to encryption on my corporate laptop I opted to install Ubuntu 9.10 on a flash drive and just use it as my hard drive. I tried the vmware but it crashed my xp a couple of times. Now I have a couple of concerns since I am totally new to Ubuntu and Linux. First, would it be possible for me to transfer my installation to a new usb drive? I now have a 4gb and it may get filled up soon, I don't seem to be able to see my actual files when I browse the usb drive. I also tried copying all files from this usb to another and boot from it but that failed. Second, whenever the system boots up I am never prompted for a password, it is always the username ubuntu. Which I guess means if I lose my usb drive my data is open wide. Is there a way to secure it or to use users and groups as on a regular hard drive installation? As a background, I created this by going into a working Ubuntu installation, System - Administration - USB Starter Disk Creator (was that the right way to start with?) Thanks!

• Dropbox failing to update?

  I have two PC's at home. One XP the other Windows 7-64bit. I have a word document that I edit on either PC - to enable this I have the file stored in a Dropbox folder. This usually works fine - but sometimes I find that the file does not get updated on my windows7 PC. I.e. I edit the file on my Windows XP machine, then go to my Windows 7 PC and see that there is a previous, old, datestamp on the file and sure enough if I open up the file to have a look, I see that the latest edits are not included. If I right-click on the file and select "Browse on Dropbox website" I see that the latest file is correctly there. Surely there must be some option to say please update this file - but can find no such thing. Has something gone wrong? I should point out that my wireless internet connection is a little intermittent - could this have caused some glitch? By the way I do not leave the old file open in word on my Windows-7 PC as I can well imagine that would cause trouble. Also I should mention that the icon on the document has the little green tick on it showing that Dropbox is not in the process of doing a transfer. Also the Dropbox icon in my system tray also has the green tick - so Dropbox is not busy transferring some other file(s). If I hover the mouse over the Dropbox icon I get the tooltip "All files up to date".

• Replacing local home server with VPS: Suggestions?

  So right now, I'm running an old box with a 2TB HDD in it. I use this as a file server for the home network, as well as a box for downloading large files which are synced via Dropbox. Lots of other tinkering things, too. Basically, I'm sick of paying extra for the power and having to worry about drive failures and whatnot. I'd rather get a remote server, let someone else manage it and provide access from the Internet. So, I've been looking for a Windows VPS that would give me access to install things and tinker, and I'm having a problem finding a host that offers more than 100GB of hard drive space. If they do offer a package with 100GB of storage, everything else is waaayyyy more than what I actually need. The idea is to create a permanent VPN connection from the cloud server to my home network to provide a transparent solution so I'm not having to go to lengths to transfer files or whatnot. I think a VPS solution will allow me to do this. I would like 1TB of storage space, minimum 100Mbps Internet connection, minimum 250GB bandwidth, admin access. Anyone have anything? Or am I being unreasonable? If I am, why?

  The Problem I've worked exclusively in Windows. I can handle that. I've worked exclusively in DOS (a long time ago!). I can handle that. I've worked exclusively in Unix. I can handle that. Right now, I am developing a command-line (python) application on a Windows machine, testing it in a DOS box (i.e. Windows' Command prompt), and then deploying it to Linux, and running it with PuTTY. I cannot handle that. My productivity drops dramatically when CTRL-C cuts in one window (Windows) and kills the process in another (DOS, Linux). My productivity drops dramatically when Enter copies the selection in one window (DOS), and deletes the selection in another (Windows), and runs the current half-edited command in the third (PuTTY). My productivity drops dramatically when I cannot hit Undo, Home or End. The Solution I am Seeking An SSH/Bash command-line client that runs on Windows and, to the extent possible, uses all the standard Windows shortcuts (Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo, Home, End, Insert, Shift-Arrows, etc.) work on a bash command line. Bonus points if it puts the cursor between letters, rather than on them. Plus, an equivalent DOS command-line drop-in that runs on Windows, and provides the same interface. I appreciate there may need to be special buttons to actually transfer CTRL codes (like CTRL-C) through in the cases I need them. I suspect the SSH client will need to be specific to a shell (so it knows when it is at the command prompt, and when it is inside a running app.) I know there are many SSH clients, but I am looking for advice for a particular need. PuTTY feels like an escape route for Unix programmers stuck on Windows. I am the opposite. Can anyone recommend one (or maybe a combination of an SSH client and an Command-Line replacement)?

• Copying large files from USB devices to the internal hard drive fails on Mac OS

  I have a second-generation 13" MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.6.6 with a 2.13 GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB SSD hard disk. I often get failures when I attempt to copy a large file or large collection of files from an external USB drive (typically a "Firewire" generation Drobo) to the internal drive. The failure behaves almost exactly as if I had pulled the USB cable from the computer in mid-transfer. I get a warning that I have removed the hard disk improperly. After this event, the drive no longer appears mounted in the finder, and I have to unplug and reinsert the USB cable to mount the drive again. I have also seen a similar problem when using Aperture 3 to import a large number of photos and videos from a USB Compact Flash card reader. The import will fail and I will have to unplug the Card Reader and import the missing items. Oddly, reversing the direction of the copy seems pretty reliable. I've never had a problem copying a large file to a USB device, meaning that I have quite a few large files which are stranded on my Drobo. Does anyone know of a hardware revision without this issue that I can trade up to? Are there any other potential solutions out there?

• KVM guest VLAN aware problems

  Hi, We are using Centos 5.5. as KVM host. It has two nics. One for management and the other one for services. As we have services in multiple vlans this nic is configured as a 802.1Q trunk. Any VM must be able to have access to any vlan, so host trunk interface is bridged to its tap interface and vlan is configured inside VM. Everything works fine while there is not heavy traffic. I can not find any log on guest or host, but, after some certain sustained big file transfer (about 6Gb) bridging stop working. Other guest on the same host continue working without problems. tcpdump on bridge interface is Ok, but on guest tap inferface I can see only outgoing traffic. Restarting bridge or rejoining tap interface doesn't provide any clue. Rebooting guest turns on bridge again. Bridge configuration is minimal: just addbr and addif (no stp). Any idea welcome!

  I cant get my wifi card to work at all after upgrading to 11.10 Oneiric. I'm not sure where to start to fix this. Ive tried using the additional drivers tool but this shows that no additional drivers are needed. Before my upgrade I had a drivers working for the Rt2860 chipset. • litespeed issue with content-type

  I am running magento with litespeed. The problem I am facing is that ajax call is being made of which header is set as x-json, but lightspeed is setting another header of text/html content type I've checked that page with apache and everything is working fine. • Make a snapshot of a live mySQL database with myISAM & innoDB tables without locking

  We have a live database in production where we are running out of space on the server. So I would like to transfer to a new server without any downtime (or as little downtime as possible). In general, I would also like to have a hot failover copy of the database available. I would like to use replication to get all of the data copied to the new machine, and then at some point flip a switch and have that new machine become the master (normal failover scenario). My problem is that I am not sure how to initialize replication without locking the db to make the initial snapshot I will use? Is there any way to do this? I know I could do it using single-transaction if I was using innoDB, but very unfortunately we have some myISAM tables in there (in fact the largest 150GB table is myISAM and I want to switch it to InnoDB but I can't do it until I have more space & a hot copy to switch to). Any ideas? Is there some way to make such a snapshot? Or is there alternatively a way to get replication to "catch up" without an snapshot for initialization?

• What could cause a WMV to not play to completion in a browser?

  A realtor has had videos created for a community she is selling homes for, the people who made the videos gave them to us in WMV format. I can play these videos without any problem in Windows Media Player, VLC, and Quicktime (via Flip4Mac). I can play the videos from their location at videohomeguide.com in my browser without any trouble. However when I upload the files to our server the video stops at about the 1 minute mark in Safari and FireFox on Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I'm not sure if Windows browsers have the same issue because they are loaded using Windows Media Player. http://carolepaul.com/images/uploads/cottageslsjamestown.wmv <- our server, will fail at 1:09ish. http://www.videohomeguide.com/media/cottageslsjamestown.wmv <- should play to completion (3:27ish) The files generate the same MD5 hash on my desktop and on our server. Since the files are identical and are playable using VLC/WMP/Quicktime, and playable in the browsers from videohomeguide.com it seems to me that it is some sort of server config... maybe incorrect headers sent to the browsers? • tftpd-hpa service must be restarted before working after fresh boot

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 inside a VirtualBox VM. I've installed tftpd-hpa so I can boot an embedded Linux device via tftp. My problem is that after a fresh boot of the VM, tftpd doesn't seem to work until I restart the service, after which is works great until the system is rebooted. The transcript below should explain the situation. EDIT: After the fresh boot, I execute netstat -a | grep tftp and find nothing. After restarting the service, the same command returns udp 0 0 *:tftp *:* (whitespace removed). I think this might be the key to the problem, I'm just not sure how to resolve it.   I'm trying to fuzz a server using the Sulley fuzzing framework. I observe the following stream in Wireshark. The error talks about a problem with JSON parsing, however, when I try the same HTTP POST request using Google Chrome's Postman extension, it succeeds. Can anyone please explain what could be wrong about this HTTP POST request? The JSON seems valid. • FreeBSD slow transfers - RFC 1323 scaling issue?

  I think I may be having an issue with window scaling (RFC 1323) and am hoping that someone can enlighten me on what's going on. Server: FreeBSD 9, apache22, serving a static 100MB zip file. 192.168.18.30 Client: Mac OS X 10.6, Firefox 192.168.17.47 Network: Only a switch between them - the subnet is 192.168.16/22 (In this test, I also have dummynet filtering simulating an 80ms ping time on all IP traffic. I've seen nearly identical traces with a "real" setup, with real internet traffic/latency also) Questions: Does this look normal? Is packet #2 specifying a window size of 65535 and a scale of 512? Is packet #5 then shrinking the window size so it can use the 512 scale and still keep the overall calculated window size near 64K? Why is the window scale so high? Here are the first 6 packets from wireshark. For packets 5 and 6 I've included the details showing the window size and scaling factor being used for the data transfer. • My desktop has started overheating -- how hot is hot?

  I have a two year old desktop, some random quad core HP desktop. It used to run very quietly, but in the past month, the fans start up anytime anything "serious" is being done -- compiles, playing video, etc. Right now, speedfan and speccy report the cores are between 50C and 70C. Speedfan reports this as hot. (Nice flame icon.) Well, the system does sit on my carpet, so two weeks ago, I took off the lid, and cough *cough* it was pretty filled with dust. I got out an air can, turned on a vacuum and carefully got out all the dust that I saw on the CPU fan the case fans any fan I saw (graphics board) and blew out all the dust I could from all the circuit boards. And then I closed the case back up. It has definitely run cooler since then, but it still runs hot, and I hear high speed fan noise I never heard before. How hot is too hot? At what temps do consumer grade CPUs die? What should I be looking to do? Replace CPU fan? (It seems to work) Replace power supply fan? Assuming the dust problem is gone, where should I be looking to determine why the machine is heating up? Epilogue: After following the various pieces of advice given here, the system did run cooler, but it was still noticeably running louder (hotter) than just a few months prior. I ended up purchasing a new cpu heatsink and fan and during installation found the cooling grease from the original heatsink was just a dried, cracked layer, probably more of an insulator than heat transfer agent. With the new fan AND the new heatsink compound, the system ran much much cooler and the fan rarely turns on.

• IIS FTP 7.5 Data Channel Problem (SSL)

  Hey there I wonder if anyone can get me in the right direction. I am setting up both a FTPS Client and Server, FTPS Server using Microsoft’s iis FTP 7.5. On the client side it will be running on Linux and I am using M2crypto for the openssl wrapping (python). I am worried the problem is on the server side (iis7.5) due to the following discovery : If I host using Filezilla with BOTH the control and data channel being forced to be encrypted it works 100% (100% file transmission), if i use iis as the server everything works up to the point when the data channel takes over... i.e. all data of the retrieved file is already received correctly in my basket! The ftp server just won't send the final '226 Transfer complete.' on the cmd socket. Why? If i force the client or server to close the connection the file is 100% intact....If i use iis 7.5 with forced encryption on control channel all works 100% as long as i don’t force data channel... • Wireless Connected But No Internet Connection (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I am using same network for 2 days and everything was normal. However, today even though it shows me as connected to the network, I do not have internet connection. If I use ethernet cable instead of wireless, I am still able to connect to the internet. Also my friends are able to connect to the wireless network and they can get internet connection. I did not update or install anything since yesterday. Therefore I do not have any idea why it is happening.
